Like most of the streets in Night City, Goldsmith Street was busy. Between street vendors, pedestrians, and very busy traffic, it was tough to conceal criminal activity, unless it was simply out of sight. Above Goldsmith Street there was the highway, between that and the street proper, the rooftops weren’t as busy and they were far more discreet.
V and Jackie had managed to get to the roof levels, and the second she had the chance, she hijacked the cameras with her Kiroshis to scan the area and assess the situation. “What do you see, chica?” asks Jackie with a muffled voice “Six… maybe seven Scavvers in the area, includin’ the mark… There’s a Trauma Team AV that just landed, looks like an exchange” Jackie frowned “Someone from Trauma is dealing with these cabrones? Fuckers… What’s the play?” she releases her control over the cameras and draws her gun “Let’s give these chips a test drive, we hit them hard, we hit them fast. Fuckers won’t know what hit ‘em” Jackie grinned and with the synchronization they had, they both leaped into action.
The first Scavvers probably didn’t realize that they had been taken out, but the cameras picked Jackie up, V activated her camouflage and acted as support, for all the Scavvers knew, it was just one merc after them “Ladies and Gentlemen… Jackie Welles!” he was having way too much fun, wielding his dual gold-plated pistols, he didn’t seem to be taking any kind of damage, but the truth is, he had sub-dermal armor implanted. As the commotion grew bigger, the Trauma Team AV took off, and V considered opening fire, but her weapon didn’t have nearly enough firepower to even put a dent in the AV, and Trauma Team wasn’t part of the gig. In the midst of all the chaos and confusion, V identified their mark, dropping off her camo, she shoots him a short message via their holos “Jackie! Barry Alken, 4 o’clock! Be careful, he’s got a Defender with him” Jackie grunts as the Scavver opens fire from cover, the hale of bullets forcing V and Jackie to take over. “You pigs will never take me!” Alken shouts, it seemed he was reloading “He thinks we’re the badges?” Jackie asks “I’ve never been so insulted” V adds as she herself reloads her gun “Hey chica, wanna see something cool?” V looks at Jackie and nods “Yeah, why not?”.
“You fuckin’ pigs are out of your league! You hear me!?” Jackie stood, coming out of cover and he aimed his gun, it was as if he was calculating something, he tweaked the positioning, and squeezed the trigger, a single shot was fired, it ricocheted off a crate and lodged itself into Barry Alken’s skull, killing him instantly. “Fuckin’ hell choom, that was nova!” V was now standing behind him, Jackie grins “You went with sneakin’ chica, I went full blown tank, if we were good before, now we’re unstoppable!” as V approached to identify their mark, she feels someone approaching from behind “NCPD! Drop your weapons, assholes!” both Jackie and V holster their weapons. The man wasn’t dressed in the usual NCPD uniform, but rather civilian clothing, he had an NCPD badge on his chest “Damn homes, how come you badges always show after the party’s over?” the man aimed at Jackie, and then at V “You, shut the fuck up, and you, get away from the body!” V moves slowly, no sudden moves “Easy officer, we’re just here for the NCPD gig, that’s all” The man twitches for a moment “No, that can’t be right, I’ve been working on a case of missing Trauma Team shipments for almost two months now”.
“It’s true homes, we got the NCPD gig, showed up not too long ago” the officer winces as he approaches V, still aiming at her “Lemme see it” he demands, as V sends him a copy of the NCPD scanner bulletin “Shit!” the man screams in frustration “I don’t fucking believe it!” V and Jackie lower their hands “Right, well, seeing how we’re done here, we’re out of here, c’mon Jackie, let’s grab something to eat” As V and Jackie were about to head to street level, the officer approaches them “Wait, please, let’s talk” Jackie shakes his head “No can do, amigo, if we’re seen talkin’ to badges we’re getting’ shanked” the officer insists “Please, all I need is information, you two are mercs, right? I’ll pay you for information, please, otherwise I no longer have a case” V stops, and once Jackie notices, he stops too “How much are you payin’?” V asks as the man holsters his gun “Depends how good the information is” V scoffs and turns to leave again “Good luck with your case, badge” The officer insists “Alright, alright! 500 eddies, I think that’s fair, right? Let’s talk” V and Jackie look at each other and nod. “Alright badge, 500 eds. Let’s talk”.
“My name’s River Ward, I’m a Detective for the NCPD, and I’ve been following a case of missing shipments and supplies from Trauma Team” the Detective starts “Whoever was the ringleader in this operation, they covered their tracks well, not even Trauma Team’s internal security could see anything wrong until the supplies were missing, my only lead was Alken, he was their contact and this was their meeting point, but I got here just after you did, and you had already taken him out, I need to know if you saw anything that can help me” V shrugged, clearly not fully interested in helping him out “Seems we got here just in time to interrupt their exchange, there was an AV takin’ off when the action started and just before your choom got his head blown off, there should be some Trauma Team supplies around the landing pad I guess” River’s eyes lit up “An AV? Trauma Team? What did it look like? Any specifics?” Jackie smirks next looking at the Detective “It looked like a Trauma Team AV, they all look the same don’t they homes?” River gives an exasperated sigh “I mean if you saw any serial numbers, I could cross reference them with a schedule Trauma Team has, please, anything you can show me can make a difference” V takes a look at the detective, he was well built, tall, and had his head shaven. He also had his left eye replaced with a somewhat crude implant, and his right hand was also cybernetic. V shrugs “Sorry choom, we were too busy takin’ cover and doin’ your job for you to pay attention” River sighs again, looking at V, and he notices something “Wait, you got Kiroshis, don’t you?” Jackie intervenes “We both do, what’s it to you?” River continues “Those can record video, and if you can send me the footage, I can look at it and take care of the rest” V smirks “That’ll cost you another 500 eds” River groans but relents, while also giving her his contact information. V sends the footage of what she saw “Thank you! This’ll be a great help, I’ll keep you posted” V and Jackie finally prepare to leave again “Don’t bother, badge… So we are done here, right?” River nods, letting them go.
As V and Jackie reach their bikes, V sends Jackie his cut of the NCPD gig as well as the River payment “Kaching, baby” he chuckles “Makes you wonder why he didn’t get the footage directly from the cameras” V shrugs “Gonna be some gonk nonsense like not having a warrant or something like that. Badges can’t even take a shit without one” Jackie starts his ARCH, grinning at V “Kinda surprised you didn’t invite him to have a good time” V scoffs starting her bike “C’mon Jackie, he ain’t bad lookin’, but he’s a badge. Bangin’ a badge never ends up well, plus I’m gonna guess Gustavo won’t be too thrilled to hear we’re making friends with the NCPD… C’mon, let’s grab a bite, I’m buyin’”.

In the next few weeks, Jackie and V found out that doing some work for the NCPD was low effort and high pay, which meant either the NCPD didn’t have enough numbers, or the higher-ups used the gigs to conceal something more sinister. Both Jackie and V enhanced and increased their arsenal, with V dabbing into hacking and netrunning a bit more seriously, hoping to incorporate those skills on the field to compensate for the lack of a netrunner on the team, and means to complement Jackie’s more physical approach to different jobs. They worked well together and soon, they got more jobs from fixers that hadn’t dealt with them before like El Capitán and even Mr. Hands.
Their reputation grew further at a rapid pace, most of the mercs at the Afterlife knew their names, and a handful even wanted to team up with them, but while sometimes they would take a group contract, for the most part, Jackie and V worked best on their own, sometimes even taking independent contracts.
Detective Ward would often call V, much to her initial annoyance, keeping her up to date with his case. His Trauma Team case eventually got sunk, but he had strong suspicions that interest at the top of the brass had turned his lead into a merc gig, and while he never got too far in the case, he took others, with different degrees of success. V became his unofficial advisor, her experience as a merc brought much-needed perspective to his work, although she was careful not to get her name out there on the streets, she had a reputation to maintain, and a merc that’s known for doing badge work more often than they should is not a good idea.
V and Jackie were living their best life, taking occasional jobs for Orta, blasting gangoons, and letting their reputation grow. They weren’t skilled enough to even come close to Morgan Blackhand’s reputation and popularity, but Blackhand hadn’t been seen in decades. Many argued that Blackhand had met his demise in 2023 on top of the Arasaka Tower. But even to this day, the man was the standard for what a top solo should be. In Blackhand’s absence, Jackie and V’s names were some of the first to be called, especially if there were jobs involving rescuing, or eliminating.
It all felt like a dream to V, from her humble beginnings with the Bakkers, all the way to her less-than-perfect transition to Night City. A dream that came to everyone willing to work hard, fuck hard, and party hard. The Dexter DeShawn fiasco seemed like a distant memory, with the tensions between Arasaka and Militech growing, it seemed like a new Corporate War could be looming on the horizon. But V kept on rocking, making a name for herself, and chasing her dream.
