In the morning, Gernot woke because Fabian had twisted in bed; his head was against his sternum and the small feet against the wall. Daddy was about to drop out on the other side. “Hey Fabian, “ Gernot shook the boy gently. “Let’s tell Cass it’s time for breakfast. Bet she’s already looking for you.” – “Uhm hm,” Fabian yawned.
The room temperature wasn’t freezing because Gernot’s room in the first floor was situated above the dining room which had an oven. The hunter washed his face briefly and got dressed. Leaving the weapon belt over the chair, he pulled the blanket around Fabians shoulders, then picked up his son and carried him over to the mansion.
Cass was already busy in the kitchen “Ah, there you are. Sean told me of your nightly adventure. Get dressed, daddy’s got to pack after breakfast.” – “Where are you going?” – “I will accompany Anne and the Countess to her family’s homestead in Gubta. I will be back in two weeks.” – “Can I come, too?” – “You will stay at home with Cass and the Steward.” – “Why?” – “Because the weather will get nasty and there are just four seats in the coach that are all taken already.” – “I could ride with you, dad.” – “I need to have my hands free to handle my bow. There are certain dangers on the road. You will be safe with Cass. Now get dressed and eat something.”
Gernot picked up breakfast for the chevalier’s house to eat with the guards. Sean looked half asleep, but Kevin was delighted of the opportunity to see more of the continent.
Commoners rarely got to travel far and this time it would be at the Countess expenses. Of course he would have to take care of the two horses, but they would stop only in top grade taverns and see many new places. Travel up the river Dyfne so far eastwards, they would see the Blue Mountains behind the renowned fortress. It was almost a knight’s errant.
After breakfast, Sean went to have a nap, Kevin brought the dishes into the kitchen and Gernot went to see the steward. Somebody would have to take care of the dogs, now that Velita had ‘vanished’. It was the perfect opportunity for inquiries and to apply pressure.
“Good morning, Steward.” Gernot stepped into the front office. “Good morning Gernot.” The steward rose from his breakfast, “The Countess is almost packed. Once you bring the coach up front, the carriers will start loading.” – “Who is going to feed the dogs and clean up the kennels while I am away? Arya will have to stay at the stable for another week. Who will clean that box and walk her?” – “I have heard that Anne will keep the Countess company?” Gernot nodded and the steward wrinkled his forehead, “It’s a pity that Velita is missing. She had a way with the animals. That would be me then. Maybe Fabian can help a bit. The dogs love him, but he doesn’t have the authority to take over that task.” – “What are you going to do about the fountain in the rose garden?” – “Ah that. The carriers will have to drain and clean it. If you cannot find Velita, we will have to hire a new gardener.”
“Maybe we can safe that expense. I am almost sure that Velita did not flee. She must still be around somewhere. Her clothing is in the stable, she had no reason to run. Somebody must have taken her during the night, locked her up where the dogs cannot find her.” – “Are you angry because your dog’s failure?” – “We found a piece of her nightgown on the perimeter wall, yes, but the footprints were large, more branches were cracked than a half naked woman would suggest and then the trace vanished like no natural trace does. Besides, Adda’s first motion went into the main house. She was just put off by the vinegar used to scrub the floor and then Cass chased us out.” – “I can understand that she doesn’t want a dog in her kitchen.” – “We’ve been in the aisle already. Honestly, Steward, the mansion should be searched upside down. Once the carriers did the loading and the Countess is on her way, the carriers could do a thorough search, turn all the compartments over.” – “I would need her approval nevertheless... and the Count’s approval as well for his wing.” – Gernot leaned back to have a look through the door into the lord’s succession of rooms, “Is he having breakfast?”
“Not yet. He excused himself yesterday and asked me not to wake him in the morning until he rose on his own. Seems that he’s temporarily indisposed.”
“But he will be around to see off the Countess, won’t he?”
“I guess he would if he’s not bedridden. Let him be. Alfred was his friend, maybe he’s grieving. It is not a good idea to disturb the Count when he’s in a fool mood.”
-oOo-
Two hours later, the coach was fully loaded and the countess had given her approval for the carriers to search her rooms. She had taken it easy because she had nothing to hide. If a mistake had been made, it was be solely on her husband’s side. She had her staff in good order and she was on the way to her former home. With a little luck, the bad weather would keep her in Gubta during the ball season. Her uncle, Silgrat would introduce her to anybody worth knowing. In the best case her aunt would even invite her to the royal court. Her older uncle, Seltkirk of Gubta was one of Demavend’s most renowned knights. Upon return a side step to Vengerberg was possible.
The countess was displeased that the Count did not come to her succession of rooms and was not to be found in his living room. The steward excused him, telling her no, it was nothing serious. “Well, if he’s bedridden, I won’t disturb him. Give my spouse my regards and my best wishes to his recovery.”
The countess got her cloak and entered the coach with her Lady in Waiting, her handmaid and Anne. The lordships coach was driven by the younger of the two guards, name was Kevin. Gernot mounted his thoroughbred and followed the coach out of the main gate. He threw Cricket in a short gallop to take over and precede the coach as it passed the gates of Midville, passing through the morning traffic and leaving through the eastern gate. The sun was on his face. Pity he could not take a quick detour to castle Bearstone to visit Hector and ask him if he found out something.
Once on the country road, Gernot heard the handmaiden calling his name. He slowed Cricket until the coach caught up. The curtains were open and the women had a good look around. “Tell us a story, please,” the countess requested personally. How did you kill the monster?”
And so he told the story again. With questions, that made for an enjoyable morning. They had lunch at a tavern of a valley. The journey continued in the afternoon, the boredom grew, the lady turned to question him on the witcher. How he looked. Why he hunted monsters. Why Forester considered him trustworthy. Yes, they had worked that out pretty soon. Gernot tried to stick with the truth but avoided to tell them they had shared a bath after burning the leshen or he would never hear the end of it.
Evening approached and they found an inn to stay overnight. Gernot excused himself to see to the horses personally while Kevin went inside with the ladies and basked in the attention, telling all kinds of stories from Midville city life.
