Several hours later, Shin kept a watchful eye on Starr as he cooked a duck over the campfire. He’d already sent his valravn to Aleyel with a message regarding the sealing runes, hopefully he’d get a reply sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, Starr had slept soundly, nestled against her fenrir who was protectively guarding her rather like it would one of it’s own cubs. It had even briefly bared it’s fangs at him twice.
But now she was starting to wake. He observed silently as she sat up, petting her fenrir affectionately and speaking softly in reassuring tones to it. His eyes narrowed fractionally as she stood, noticing her slight imbalance before she corrected it and sat down close to the fire.
As he observed her, she also observed him, noticing that he’d already gotten comfortable for the night. He’d already removed the bulky outer armor and was relaxing in the simple cloth undergarments. She nearly cursed in aggravation at her own armor. There was precious little of it, but it was still very uncomfortable. As soon as she warmed up a little she was going to change into her nightwear. It wasn’t any more decent, but it was markedly more comfortable.
After giving her a minute to more fully wake up, he inquired quietly. “That was a nasty fight you had. What happened?” His voice concerned. “And next time, wake me up to let me know you’re going out.”
Starr grimaced in faint irritation before huffing in acceptance. “Sorry. I just wanted to spend some time alone. I haven’t been to Giran since…well, since before.” Standing quietly, she motioned to her fenrir to stand and follow her. The pair traveled a short distance away and she changed into her own undergarments in relative privacy as both the forest and the fenrir blocked her from his view.
Shin watched her retreating back and answered softly. “I understand, and I would’ve let you have your time.” And he would’ve. She’d proven to be more trustworthy than she had been previously, which was a much welcomed relief.
When she returned to the fireside and sat back down, he continued quietly, gazing at her across the delicately dancing flames. “You and I have to trust one another.” The hot embers crackled in the silence that followed.
Her gaze found his and contemplated his words as well as his past actions. Actions that had been straight forward and very nearly always conscientious of her needs. Even tonight, he hadn’t attempted to remove her armor when he could’ve, and even would’ve had a somewhat plausible reason to do so: Her comfort.
“I don’t understand you.” She finally stated quietly. “I don’t understand why you wanted to help, I don’t understand why you don’t feel the same as the others, I don’t understand why you chose me. I don’t understand any of it.” She briefly stopped speaking and then continued.
“You told me that you knew of light elves who’d abandoned a child in the Enchanted Valley, left the child to die.” She said, vividly remembering him telling her that story in one of their more heated arguments. “Yet, you help me. Why? And while we’re being honest with one another, if the situation was reversed, I wouldn’t be helping.”
“And there lies one of our differences.” He murmured with quiet conviction. “I never condemned all light elves for the actions of a few.” Picking up a stick, he prodded the fire, stoking it as he carefully considered his next words. This was the most meaningful discussion she’d engaged in with him and it partly explained why she was so very difficult to deal with.
“I don’t see things in terms of absolutes.” He began. “Rarely is anything truly ‘absolute’. Not all dwarves are greedy. Not all humans are power hungry, and neither is every orc is an unthinking brute.” He pinned her with a meaningful gaze. “And not every light elf I’d encountered possessed a deep hatred for their darker cousins. Believe it or not, there were those who were quite willing to be a friend rather than an enemy.” And he’d lost those few treasured friends, forever.
He let a small silence fill the air before continuing. “And not every dark elf agrees with Thiefiell. Nathavin is amassing his own army to dethrone him. He wouldn’t do this if he didn’t feel strongly about it.”
Starr had to agree on that point. What Nathavin was doing was extremely risky and he didn’t seem like the type to take unnecessary risks. While she definitely didn’t like him, she didn’t get the sense that he was doing this solely to seek power. He truly believed that the current dark elven leadership had lost it’s way and compromise was no longer an option.
“I chose you because I couldn’t save every light elf.” He gazed at her solemnly. “I had to pick one. Just one. And that was you.” After his own brief silence he spoke again, looking into the fire. “You are not the only light elf I’ve ever befriended.” He was further encouraged when she didn’t interject and inform him that she wasn’t his friend. “There were several others, healers mostly.” He said with a small wry smile, remembering the humbling experiences that had led to those friendships, the long nights and days spent in the healing care of light elves. Ironies that were not lost on those healers.
But the smile slowly faded. “They’re gone. Only you are left.”
“We’ve fought each other for things that we’ve never actually done to one another. We were fighting a war that started long before our birth. A war that was started over someone’s vain pride, for ideas that weren’t our own. It doesn’t matter whose side they were on.” He snorted frustratedly. “Nathavin tried to persuade the others not to do this, but he didn’t have the clout. Not then. It was only after, when the others actually saw what we were doing, that they decided to join him. He can’t change the past, but he can ensure that it never gets repeated. And that’s where you and I come in. We’re going to help him.”
Starr sighed dejectedly. For her kind, that help was far too late. And while she didn’t think Nathavin was solely seeking power, she could see that he was interested in furthering the influence of the dark elves over the other territories. It was only a matter of time before war broke out again, and again with the dark elves at the heart of it.
The dwarves would play both sides, adena was after all adena, no matter where it came from. The humans might briefly choose to ally with the orcs with ideas of betraying them the way the dark elves had betrayed her kind in their quest to defeat the dark elves. But the humans lacked both the brutality and the sheer cunning of both the dark elves and orcs. And while certainly not all humans were honorable, most were and thereby wouldn’t choose to betray the orcs in such a fashion should such an unlikely alliance ever be achieved.
While Nathavin was certainly more honorable than Thiefiell, he clearly wasn’t above seizing an opportunity if it was presented to him. She’d personally learned that the hard way when he’d trained with her. Doing the ‘honorable’ thing and letting him pick up his bow after he’d dropped it while dodging one of her attacks had earned her a nasty blow to the face with the weapon once he’d gotten it in his hand again. She’d experienced similar with Aleyel. The two of them, and the other dark elves they’d enlisted, had relentlessly trained that ‘honorable’ method of combat from her, and her most recent fight proved it.
Shin prodded the duck and removed it from the spit and began silently slicing it, giving her time to absorb all that he’d told her. Perhaps in time he’d tell her that he was the child that the light elves had left to die. He’d thought she’d forgotten about it. But she clearly hadn’t and he could tell that she was still genuinely and deeply bothered by the fact that her kind had acted that way. It touched him deeply that she cared, even if she didn’t know it was him. And it proved that she was capable of having more complex feelings than just a blind hatred for the dark elves.
When he offered her several slices of the duck, she accepted without comment. After finishing, she answered his earlier question about what had happened in Giran and the fight she’d had as a result. Her brows furrowed in confusion as she looked at the runic tracings on her flesh. “Aleyel told me that I wouldn’t be able to use magic with these…” Actually Aleyel had brought in a highly skilled stormscreamer who’d then informed her that it could in fact be downright deadly, to use the magic again. But she’d never elaborated on exactly why it would be deadly.
“I’ve already sent a message to her about it.” Shin stood up and moved closer to her. “By the time I reached you they had mostly returned to normal.” Reaching out, he held his hand out for her, indicating that he wanted to more closely inspect the markings. He had no intention of simply grabbing her arm, if she allowed him to get a better look he’d take it, if not, he wasn’t going to force her.
After a brief hesitation, she extended her arm and allowed him to help her stand so that he could more closely inspect the runes that formed the sealing spell. She felt awkward and very much exposed. Her barely-there dark elven undergarments only heightened the feeling. Instinctively she wanted to withdraw and move away from him, cover up at least, but she resisted the feeling and awkwardly stood still.
Turning her arm over carefully, he noticed a few areas that looked red and raw. “Don’t call upon the magic again until we hear back from her. These areas here, and here, look inflamed.” Stepping away, he wondered if other places were also inflamed. “Are you hurting anywhere?” He moved to stand behind her and again examined her to see if there were any other spots of inflammation that he could see. It was difficult to keep his eyes from lingering where they shouldn’t and simply look for areas that could indicate problems with her unique ability.
Starr shook her head. “No, just a bit sore.” She stood tensely, he was so close she could feel the heat coming from him. Breathing in deeply to steady her nerves, she caught his scent. A fresh, slightly spicy scent, and it brought about memories of their time together in the pool of the waterfall. She gave her head a sharp shake, trying to dispel the thoughts of that night, but they wouldn’t leave.
Vividly, her mind recalled the events of that night. Her lips parted softly as she took in a deeper breath, trying to regain control of herself. The attempt failed miserably as more of his scent filled her nose, bringing those memories into even sharper focus.
Shin moved back in front of her obliviously as he informed her that if she had any additional problems they would return to Giran and see a healer in the morning. He moved about a half step closer to her to look at a suspiciously reddened area just below her ear. Their gazes locked as she leaned away from him suddenly.
In an instant the air between them became charged. He had but a moment to decide what to do and how. Slowly, and without breaking eye contact, he brought his lips to hers, placing a featherlight kiss upon her. When she didn’t pull away, he kissed her again, gradually deepening the kiss as he pulled her to him.
His hands skimmed over her, down her back and then back up along her sides before gliding down her back again. He was grateful for the dark elven undergarments she wore, they afforded him the ability run his hands over her with no need to worry about his progress being blocked too much. He ran his hands across her back once more and then placed both hands on her ass and gave it a squeeze before lifting her up and pulling her to him.
Starr gasped into the kiss as she felt him grip her. The sudden upward and forward motion also had her coming into contact with his lower half and she could feel his rapidly hardening cock. Shivering in an automatic response, she felt herself growing wet. Starr bit her lip. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t let this happen again…
So, why wasn’t she stopping him?
Feeling her shiver, Shin knew she was responding to him and groaned into the kiss in spite of himself. Breaking the kiss, he nudged her head to the side slightly and began kissing her neck, interspersing light nips here and there. His hands left her ass and trailed up her sides and then around to her front, caressing her breasts gently for a moment, allowing her time to pull away if she wanted, before transitioning to firmly gripping and cupping them in his hands.
Meanwhile, Starr’s hands had begun their own exploratory paths, moving over his forearms and biceps, and up to his shoulders. She was none too sure if she was doing the right thing by encouraging this, or even if she was going to let it play out to its natural conclusion or not. Her thoughts were shattered as a hiss of mild pain escaped her as his teeth clamped down a bit more firmly on her neck before pressing an assuaging kiss on the tender flesh.
Pulling away quickly, he yanked his linen shirt over his head and chucked it vaguely in the direction of his fenrir, not registering the resulting low growl of annoyance. Leaning back in to recapture her lips, he gently took her hands in his and brought them back to his shoulders. His own hands then fell to her shoulders and pushed the thin straps down. The sheer material fell away and exposed her to the night air. Bending her backward slightly he took one tit in his mouth and greedily sucked, taking long, hard draws on it.
Starr gasped as her entire world shrank to just the feel of his mouth on her. Unconsciously she pressed herself further into his mouth, her hands holding his head to her.
Deciding to switch things up, Shin stopped sucking on her and began gently rolling and twisting the hardened tip of her tit between his teeth. Releasing her, he swiped his tongue back and forth, before circling around it. A low sound from her caught his ears and glanced upward at her.
Pulling his mouth from her entirely and straightening up, he stepped back and shoved the last of his undergarments down and stepped out of them.
Her eyes fell to his hard cock. She had to make her choice.
Continue or stop.
Closing the short distance between them, she tentatively reached out and took him in her hand.
Shin hissed in grateful pleasure as he felt her hand wrap around him and begin slowly working up and down in slow, delicious movements. As the moments passed, her touch on him became bolder, her stroking more firm and sure. Glancing down, he softly pushed her down to her sleeping pallet and gently laid her on her back. The last time had been relatively quick, not this time.
Positioning himself over her, he pressed quick kisses on her and began making his way down her body. He had a single goal in mind. One he wasn’t keen on being denied. Nipping and suckling his way over her tits and down her stomach, he parted her thighs and placed her legs over his shoulders.
Starr snapped back to reality and attempted to regain control over the situation, wriggling to escape his grasp. This was far too personal!
Feeling her beginning to panic, Shin gripped her hips firmly and held her in place, preventing her from thrashing around as his mouth descended on her. The flimsy satin covering her was a nuisance to deal with as soon as she quit panicking, but it didn’t present too big an obstacle for teasing her with his tongue. With determination, he pressed his tongue to her, lapping at her through the cloth.
“Shin! No, stop!”
Gritting his teeth in mild frustration, he stopped his attentions, but he didn’t move from his position. “Do you really want me to stop, or are you just afraid of the unknown?” He queried from between her legs, his mouth a scant inch from her. His tongue darted out and ran over her quickly when she tried to answer, loving the feel of her tensing muscles as the pleasure she felt at his touch ran through her. He repeated the action quickly, feeling her thighs tremble on his shoulders.
The little dig about her being afraid of the unknown stung her pride. Shuddering, Starr struggled to form a coherent sentence to his question and vehemently deny the notion that she was afraid. Thus distracted, she didn’t feel or hear the tearing of satin.
While he hadn’t planned on distracting her with his question, he wasn’t above making use of it while she struggled to form a reply. Shin stealthily moved his hands to grip the edges of her under garment and tore it away from her. Now free of impediments, he ran his tongue along her cleft, tasting her. She tasted divine… He pulled her to him more firmly and delved his tongue further into her, running it up and down her slit before encircling her clit.
A tortured gasp was ripped from her as all thoughts of escape died as soon as his tongue made contact. Her legs seized, trying to keep him both pinned in place and push him away at the same time. Without any conscious thought, she abandoned her attempts to stop their activities.
Briefly, he smiled to himself as he recognized the tell tale signs that she was no longer focused on trying to get away. Releasing his firm grip, he positioned his hand so he could spread her open so he could have a better taste of her. Once again, he dragged his tongue over her before closing his lips around her clit and sucking while flicking his tongue over it back and forth. His other hand slid around and he eased his finger into her, pumping slowly. Ripping his mouth away from her, he gazed at her face as he methodically increased his speed and added another finger.
Starr’s eyes had long since closed as she gave in to him, no longer trying to fight him over this apparently new experience for her. Her breathing indicated that she was close to her own peak and he wanted to see her face. As he added a third finger and began flicking his thumb over her clit, he was surprised when her eyes opened and locked with his in the final critical seconds before she peaked.
Swiftly, he removed his fingers and plunged into her, thrusting hard. Leaning down, he kissed her deeply, momentarily forgetting that he didn’t know whether she would object to tasting herself or not. It didn’t take long for him to find his own release and he came inside her with a roar, holding her tightly to him.
They laid there for a long seconds, each calming their breathing. Starr ran her tongue over her teeth, unused to the taste of her own self. While she wouldn’t say it was pleasant, she wouldn’t say it was disgusting either. Certainly strange… Her thoughts trailed off as she felt him move.
Moving to lay next to her, Shin grabbed one of her spare blankets and covered both of them. As far as he was concerned, there was no longer any need for them to have separate sleeping pallets. His hand drifted over her, silently checking on her and making sure she was ok while simultaneously giving her the opportunity to voice her concerns or anger at him.
Her only response was a deep sigh as she shifted into a more comfortable position and snatched at the covers. She wasn’t sure how she felt about the situation. But she had an unsettling feeling that the longer this continued the more attached to one another they were going to get. With that final thought, she drifted to sleep. Not long after, Shin also fell asleep.

Deep in the heart of the Garden of Eva, the last refuge for the few remaining light elves, Ruilkaean looked over the survivors. There were just twenty three of them. Of those, only seven were able bodied warriors. The rest were either merchants or were too badly injured to fight. But if the news was to be believed, there was one more. A lone survivor still held captive by a dark elf.
He was going to risk going after that survivor. He would leave five warriors behind to protect the merchants and invalid, taking only Hanelo with him. There were so few of them left, they couldn’t risk not searching for the unfortunate elf.
Light elven blood had to preserved, no matter the cost. And if the survivor were a female, then that was all the more reason to bring her back to her people.
