.:Chapter 24:.
Epilogue
In the year that it's been since Chris officially quit his job, it was difficult for him to say just how much things really hadn't changed. His job now called for him to be a solo leader, unlike having to run the B.S.A.A which was a shared job, but it wasn't much different. It was a smaller than the large organization that the B.S.A.A was but he managed it, somehow. It helped having Kylie as such a close friend, of course, because the woman simply knew how to do everything. Most times, Chris assumed Kylie could have easily taken over the job herself if she hadn't have been so desperate to keep Chris in town.
Claire had been away more often, unfortunately, but anytime she wasn't off working, she was hanging out at Chris's new house with Kylie by her side more often than not. The red-head still wasn't very fond of Wesker but Chris saw some sort of bond forming between the two considering they had to work together once or twice (though that was a situation Chris never wanted to ask about for multiple reasons; one being that Wesker refused to speak about his missions). They had grown accustom to frequently hanging out whether inside or outside and Wesker was always beside them if he was available.
Perhaps that was the thing that changed the most; it wasn't the fact that he and Chris had moved into a house or Chris's job change- it was Wesker. He was the same old broody, cool, english Albert Wesker but around Chris he was just different. He smiled more (or smirked less evilly), he spoke more (or less threateningly), and participated in their 'family activities' without complaint (most of the time).
However, there was a long awkward period right before Chris had spoken to Claire and Kylie about moving when.. Well...
"Hey Chris!" Kylie said happily, striding into the old apartment with Claire behind her.
"Don't bother knocking," Wesker muttered from his sitting position beside Chris.
"Hey I was just talking about you two," Chris said with a smile as Kylie made herself at home beside Wesker, who crossed his legs as he sat back, while Claire sank into the armchair.
"If he's plotting our deaths, I want to know ahead of time," Claire said threateningly causing Wesker to smirk.
"It's nothing like that. We just have some news and we were wondering how you two would take it," Chris said nonchalantly but the high pitched squeal from beside Wesker caused the two men to twitch, though, Wesker's was much less noticeable.
"CONGRATULATIONS! I'm so happy for you two!" Kylie shouted, suddenly on her feet and jumping up and down ecstatically.
"Why, exactly?" Claire asked as she looked from Chris to Wesker before landing her gaze on Kylie.
"They're getting married!"
Claire's face was enough to tell Chris that her silence was purely because she couldn't scream loud enough to match just how upset she was so he decided to step in.
"No, no, no. Kylie, we aren't getting married. I don't even think that's legal in this state and... Chris.. Wesker? Albert.. Redfield? Do you really imagine that going over smoothly?"
"You would be taking my surname," Wesker muttered nonchalantly.
"As helpful as ever, you are," Claire snapped towards the blond before turning back to Chris. "Then what is the news?"
"We're moving! We've already got the place picked out but it is a bit farther than the apartment and I was afraid you two would be upset," Chris said as he noticed Kylie's smiling face fading.
"How much farther?" Claire asked carefully, eyeing Wesker suspiciously.
"It's just outside of town. It shouldn't be considered news that we're moving a few miles from where we are now," Wesker said, folding his arms over his chest.
It was such a tiny moment but it brought up a rather large conversation later that night. The two didn't express their feelings regularly and the topic of marriage wasn't very safe for either one of them. However, Chris brought it up with a safety reason- what happened if Wesker died on a mission?
Wesker simply laughed at the insinuation but Chris countered it with-
"All Sheva and I had to do in order to defeat you was turn off the lights and we were able to shoot a rocket in your face," Chris said blandly.
Wesker's smirk dropped and the blond sighed.
"Chris, marriage isn't-"
"I don't want to get married to you, idiot. I don't need jewelry to represent commitment, not after all the shit we've been through," Chris muttered as he laid back on the bed, watching Wesker get undressed from his peripheral vision.
"Then why are you bringing this up?"
"I told you. What would happen if you were to die on a mission? You do have belongings and money and stuff that I should be entitled to assuming you don't want to invest all your savings into reviving Umbrella when you die. Though, even then, I'd say I'm still entitled to-"
Chris was cut off by Wesker's lips pressing almost roughly against his. Wesker seemed to have a habit of shutting the brunet up with a harsh kiss whenever Chris rambled about things. Perhaps this is why Chris seemed to do it so often.
"Relax, pet. Everything is already arranged with employer. He knows who you are, knows my finances, and is prepared to do what's necessary when or if the time comes," Wesker assured.
And that was that.
Marriage was never brought up again simply because neither were interested (though Kylie seemed rather fond of the idea).
Once moved, Claire and Kylie came just as often maybe even moreso. The house they had bought was large, much too large for only two people, and sat overlooking a small lake in the middle of a small thicket, much like Rocky Isle but smaller. The lake alone was what caused the woman to appear so often and Wesker seemed to curse it on a daily basis despite Chris frequently reminding him of the various sexual escapades the two had with many promises of more in said lake.
In fact, just after they moved in, Kylie insisted that the house didn't have enough furniture and wanted desperately to go shopping. Both Wesker and Chris scowled at the idea but when Claire agreed with Kylie, they found themselves in front of one of the few furniture stores in town.
"Ooh, this screams Wesker," Kylie said happily, running over to a large black leather couch.
Chris immediately had his hand over Wesker's mouth, stopping the suggestive innuendo that had almost escaped his mouth. Chris smiled casually as he spoke;
"You can say that about anything that is leather and black."
"I've never been so happy to see Wesker unable to speak," Claire muttered silently as she followed Kylie towards another set of couches.
"We don't need a new couch," Wesker said after Chris had finally removed his hand.
"Yes you do, you have a giant space in your living room! You should get a bigger television too and maybe one for the bedroom-"
"We have other entertaining methods that we prefer for the bedroom," Wesker stated causing Chris to stare at him in astonishment.
"Because the whole hand over the mouth thing just wasn't enough, was it?" Claire hissed back at him causing the blond to smirk.
"Fine but you have a big living room and enough space for another couch. Besides, I'm tired of sitting on the floor," Kylie said causing Chris to sigh.
"We might as well," the brunet said.
"Very well. If we must have one, choose the-"
"We're not getting a black leather couch, Wesker," Chris said sternly, crossing his arms as he looked at him in surprise.
"I wasn't going to say leather," Wesker said quietly before pointing towards a different black couch. It was a modern styled fabric couch that would somehow fit rather nicely with their current couch, which was brown suede, and the group agreed on it.
"So what about your dining room?"
"What about the dining room?" Wesker asked Kylie who stopped and turned on her heel.
"You have one with nothing in it," she said suddenly.
"Oh fine. We can get-"
"We're not getting a black table set," Chris said, yet again rather sternly. "You need to expand your color choices," Chris muttered before following Kylie towards the kitchen setups.
"Whatever you say, pet," Wesker spoke blandly as he followed the group.
They ended up with a black table set.
Kylie chuckled as they walked out of the store, Chris sulking with a ego-filled blond beside him.
"Shut up," Chris mumbled.
"Okay sorry," Kylie giggled as she turned her attention to the receipt in her hand explaining when the furniture would arrive at the house.
"I wasn't talking to you," Chris said rather nicely before shooting a glare towards Wesker.
"I didn't speak," Wesker defended with a smile.
"You didn't have to," Chris grumbled.
"Stop it, you two," Claire hissed. "Let's hurry up and get back."
Chris still hated when Wesker left over-night for trips and often found himself on the couch in the living room with the television on in the middle of the night, sometimes awake and sometimes asleep; it was just a routine. Everything was, in the end, but Chris didn't mind that as much as he thought.
The job itself was simple enough with Kylie helping him. As the secretary, she did most of the work and kept track of everything making it incredibly simple for Chris to take over for anyone who needed it. Recently, the black market deals were beginning to sky rocket and many of the policeman had to transfer permanently to work with Terrasave. Terrasave stopped helping the B.S.A.A once they realized just how limited their resources were and decided to stick to their own missions. In fact, that's how Claire ended up working with Wesker several times- Wesker's employer had connections with Terrasave and they needed extra help that Chris simply couldn't provide.
In fact, when Claire returned from the mission, Chris automatically knew something had happened...
Claire entered the house, taking large strides and slamming the door behind her. Chris looked up towards the hallway where she emerged from the entrance. She said nothing as stalked towards Chris, dropping down onto a nearby couch with a sharp sigh.
Chris looked at her for a long moment before deciding to ask;
"Bad day?"
"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, YOU KNOW!"
Well, he didn't expect that.
"Can I be told why I'm being yelled at?"
"My mission... it was with HIM. I HAD TO WORK WITH HIM, CHRIS!"
"You aren't talking about your incredibly evasive boyfriend, are you?" Chris asked worriedly causing Claire to almost visibly fume.
"NO! I'M TALKING ABOUT YOURS!"
"Stop shouting. I can hear you from outside," Wesker muttered as he walked into the room.
"This is all your fault," Claire hissed towards Chris again.
"How did you two end up on a mission together, exactly? Isn't Terrasave anti-Wesker?"
"Well yes. You see, they needed a special amount of help with this mission and my employer offered his connection a special trade. As long as I could work with one of the best in the company behind the scenes, I would be able to help. They accepted," Wesker explained as Claire was now visibly shaking with anger as she watched the blond sit beside her brother.
"I don't know why they sent me but I was his partner for the whole mission, Chris!"
"Well, what happened?" Chris asked, looking from Wesker to Claire.
"Nothing, nothing. It's just.."
"Nothing will change, Claire," Wesker assured her causing the redhead to sigh.
"But-"
"Let's change the subject, shall we?" Wesker offered suddenly causing Claire and Chris to exchange looks.
The two worked together more than once and perhaps that allowed Claire to get closer to him in her own way but nothing changed between them. They bickered and complained but there was always less malice and more playfulness behind the words.
Granted, they still didn't like each other (after all, some wounds could never be healed) but they tolerated each other and had a certain amount of trust for one another and somehow, that was good enough.
Though, after awhile, there was only so much they could talk about with Kylie around and the Chris realized if they were going to be spending so much time with her, perhaps she should know a little more of the truth. He brought it up with Claire first who stared back at him almost blankly with obvious doubt before agreeing with a sigh.
"God, that lake is so pretty," Kylie said with a sigh as she stared off into the dark sparkling waters that reflected the night sky almost perfectly. "You guys are lucky."
"Not as lucky as you'd think," Chris muttered causing Wesker to glance at him daringly.
"What are you talking about? You two are perfect for each other, you have a beautiful house, amazing jobs, and friends to share it with. You two are lucky," Kylie responded dreamily.
"I mean it wasn't always like that," Chris said with a quiet sigh. "There's something we need to tell you."
And so he did- most of it. He left out some of the more major details such as most of Africa and a bit of Rockfort Island but remained as truthful as possible because he simply couldn't handle lying to another friend. Jill was one thing but Kylie was different; Kylie didn't have to devote her life to fighting Wesker; Kylie didn't get betrayed and almost killed by him multiple times; Kylie wasn't mentally controlled by him at some point.
Maybe she would understand.
"Why didn't you ever tell me this?" Kylie asked carefully, eyeing the three to her left cautiously.
"I didn't know how you would react. I mean there's still a lot we're not saying-"
"Don't. Everyone makes mistakes," Kylie said before standing up and walking down the line of friends before reaching Wesker and sitting to his left. "I think it's nice that you're changing so significantly for Chris."
"I didn't have much choice in the matter," Wesker muttered with a smirk.
"Well, in any case, if you ever hurt him- I'll kill you," she said seriously with a smile.
"Hey, get in line," Claire called from the other end of the group.
"I wouldn't expect it any other way," Wesker said casually.
It was never really spoken about again out of respect for Kylie but it made it easier to talk about their past and reminisce about certain moments- which was something that Kylie enjoyed. She seemed to like to hear about their past but didn't like hearing about the times that everyone shuddered at; The betrayal of S.T.A.R.S was one of those stories that was told simply to keep her included but it didn't invoke the group into laughter like most past moments and, instead, an awkward silence that none of them wished to return to.
Then, of course, there were the more sentimental times that Chris and Wesker had when Claire and Kylie weren't around.
"I remember my mother," Wesker muttered quietly.
Chris and Wesker were sitting together in the living room watching television. Chris had taken to leaning onto the blond when Wesker's arm somehow found its way around Chris. The two had settled into this position and had been silent until now.
"What?" Chris asked, looking at Wesker in slight shock.
"I assumed you wished me to continue with the story?"
"It's been months. I didn't think you wanted to tell anymore of it," Chris said truthfully as he leaned back onto his partner, muting the television as Wesker spoke.
"I didn't. I suppose there's only so much of my past I can avoid," the blond muttered in his version of a sigh that came from gritted teeth. Emotion certainly wasn't simply for Wesker.
"Well, go on," Chris urged.
"I was young but I still remember my mother. It's difficult to forget someone who was so affectionate while also being stern and strong willed."
"And your father?"
"I forgot him long ago," Wesker scoffed coldly. "I don't believe we ever spoke about your parents."
"You know they died when I was younger," Chris said, his eyes blankly scanning the table in front of them.
"Indeed I do. Do you remember them?"
"Not really. I should because Claire asked me about them when she was younger. Over and over again, she wanted stories about them but I never had any. I started making them up just because I couldn't remember them and now, I guess I have this certain image in my head of them that probably isn't even true in the slightest but... that's what I imagine when I think of them," Chris said with a melancholic smile. "Did you ever try to find them?"
"I don't care to. I've considered it but no good could come from searching for them. It would be more trouble than it's worth," Wesker spoke coldly and Chris frowned at him.
"Do you blame them?" he asked quietly.
"At times."
Chris leaned towards him, his lips pressing against the edge of Wesker's mouth. Just as Chris decided to pull away, expecting it to be a quick kiss, Wesker turned and reconnected their lips. Chris smiled into the kiss, the stressful awkwardness fading away as the two pulled away slowly.
"I rather enjoy when you do that," Wesker said quietly, causing Chris to smile wider.
"You like it when I do a lot of things," Chris muttered with a smirk. Wesker chuckled and nodded in agreement though neither of them were in the mood to push it past the slight teasing.
Their sentimental moments only lasted so long and they were limited but they were there. Every once and a while, Wesker would reveal another small portion of his life that he'd never told anyone.. Or well, Chris thought he'd never told anyone. That conversation had ended up into a rather large fight that... Didn't end well.
"Do you guys do anything besides have sex?" Claire asked in disgust as Wesker had just made a crude statement in response to something innocent that Chris said.
"Well yeah. We have nice moments when you two aren't around," He said, referring to both Claire and Kylie.
"Oh yeah?" Kylie asked in interest, sitting forward on the opposite couch to listen better.
"Yeah. He's told me loads of things that he's never shared with anyone else. Right, Wesker?" Chris asked, looking to his significant other for verification to get his sister to change the subject as quickly as possible.
"I haven't, actually."
"See? We- Wait, what? What about all of your parental things and life in Umbrella?"
"I may have not spoken to many people about it, but you aren't the only one who knows," Wesker said simply causing Chris to turn towards him in rising anger.
"Who else knows?"
"William Birkin."
"Birkin?" Claire asked in shock, looking from Chris to Wesker before landing on Kylie who, quite honestly, couldn't be more lost.
"Um... Who?" she asked quietly, receiving mixed looks from the remaining three.
"He was... a long story. Just... Birkin? Really?" Claire asked quickly.
"Well yes. We weren't only co-workers, you know. We were close friends for some time. We were at the same research center under Marcus. I assumed you read the reports," Wesker said to Chris who looked more shocked than Claire.
"I did but why would you tell him any of that? Wasn't he part of Umbrella?"
"Of course but as devoted to Umbrella as we may have been at the time, we were still friends."
"I didn't know you could have friends," Claire said unexpectedly.
"You didn't think I could have a relationship either. I find that I'm doing very well in both," Wesker spoke smugly.
"You're wrong about that," Chris muttered, standing suddenly and walking from the room.
As hurt as Chris was, it took a simple explanation to get him to calm down which involved Wesker explaining the level of trust that he and Birkin had built up over the years and how their relationship was much different than his and Chris's. He then made Chris feel better by assuring Birkin was dead, thanks to Claire, and claiming that there was nobody else who knew- alive or dead.
And that's how their relationship was. They were devoted, loving, protective, and cherished each other in their own way. They had their dramatic moments, various fights, and large amounts of scares but they made it through. Not just Chris and Wesker, but all four of them. Claire got accustom to being around Wesker and though she may not have considered him family or treated him the best, Wesker still saved her life- something only he and Claire knew. Kylie may not have gone through everything they had, but she was still part of their group and they trusted her enough to tell her the truth.
They all had a place- and that was together.
