Chapter
26: Farewell
It seemed that the weather in
Balmora was always nice. Alyssa had made a stop first in Ald’ruhn to pick up
Edwinna’s book. One down, two more to go. She wasn’t sure exactly where
Malcus was meeting her, but trusted that he knew what he was doing. She was
sure he would find her before long. She stopped by Dorisa’s bookshop in the
meantime, hoping she wouldn’t have to spend too much to purchase these books
for Baladas. He hadn’t thought to give her a stipend, so currently her errand
was being run strictly out of charity.
Unfortunately, Dorisa only had one
of the books she needed in stock – for nearly 250 gold! – but suggested that
she look at Jobasha’s shop in Vivic for the other. Grumbling to herself,
Alyssa decided that it could wait. She headed over to Ra’vir’s shop, hoping
that Malcus might have stopped by for a visit. He wasn’t in, but Ajira was
visiting. She purred excitedly when she saw Alyssa.
“How is friend Alyssa?” she asked.
Alyssa smiled, assuring her that all was well. Ajira’s tail twitched
nervously.
“Malcus is back as well. Says he
has business to take care of, but will be back shortly. Did Alyssa hear
Malcus’ plan for setting up a base to free slaves in Telvanni territory?” Ajira
asked, lowering her voice.
“No, but I knew he was trying to
come up with one,” Alyssa told her.
“Too dangerous,” Ra’vir growled.
Ajira lowered her eyes, nodding her head in agreement.
“Yes, Malcus wants Alyssa to
smuggle release papers from the Gateway Inn to the Dirty Murel’s Cornerclub in
Sadrith Mora. Malcus thinks the slaves can hide there until they are
transported with the aid of the Imperial Cult,” added Ajira.
“But both are Imperial owned and
run and so would be first to be suspect,” said Ra’vir, “It is a good thought,
but not a good plan.”
“Alyssa would be suspect as well,
since she is both Imperial Mages Guild and Telvanni so might be seen as a spy
and captured by Telvanni wizards,” growled Ajira, “Not good at all – the
wizards are quick to punish those who interfere with their work. Ajira thinks
it is too dangerous for Alyssa.”
“Yes, it would be a better plan to
set up a Dunmer-run tavern in one of those mushroom pods in the midst of the
city, with actors posing as slaves so no one would suspect anything operating
undercover,” a voice added from the doorway. Alyssa turned to see Malcus
standing there, a smug grin on his face. She ran over to embrace him.
“But how do we set up such a thing
up?” asked Ajira quizzically.
“That’s the part I’m not sure of.
We don’t currently have many Dunmer members in the Twin Lamps who would be
willing to pose as bartenders and shopkeepers. That’s why I figured that Dirty
Murel’s would be a good place to start stockpiling supplies until we can get a
real operation going,” explained Malcus, “We can easily place a contact there
on the inside to collect and organize things, and keep their eye out for a more
permanent operation site.”
“Hmm, it may work,” offered Ra’vir,
“But it would be a huge risk for all of us. And until we have a native Dunmer
lined up to take over the operation, Ra’vir is not sure that we should try
anything just yet. If Alyssa is captured it will be a grave loss for all of
us: for we shall lose a friend as well as a valuable ally in the fight against
slavery.”
“I don’t want to see Alyssa hurt
either, and I would rather die than cause her harm, but we all know and accept
the risks of our actions as abolitionists every day,” replied Malcus, “This is
no different, and it could lead to the breakthrough that we’ve all been waiting
for.” Ra’vir and Ajira looked at one another in surprise.
“Malcus! The Telvanni wizards
won’t be merciful! They won’t simply fine Alyssa or throw her in jail. None of
us is likely ever to see her again if she is caught!” said Ajira.
“No, he’s right. If I am going to
help, I should act on it. Thinking kind thoughts won’t help anyone,” Alyssa
replied, her eyes cast downward.
“No. Patience, my child. Alyssa
will get her chance. But do not throw it away just yet. We only get one
chance,” warned Ra’vir. Malcus sighed.
“Alright. We’ll wait. But it
looks like I’m going to have to leave the planning to you two. Contact Desele
in Suran if you need more help or information on how to get the operation set
up,” replied Malcus, bringing his hand to his temple. Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“Desele of ‘Desele’s House of
Earthly Delights’?” asked Alyssa.
“Yes, that’s the one,” replied
Malcus, still rubbing his temples.
“For crying out loud, she has
slaves at the front counter working… half-naked!” exclaimed Alyssa angrily.
She had not forgotten Anarenen’s mention about Malcus and Desele a few days
earlier. At this, Ra’vir laughed.
“You speak of Kinnjarsi,” said
Ra’vir, “Kinnjarsi is my niece and a former slave. She still wears bracers and
acts as a slave so that no one will suspect Desele’s brothel as an undercover
operation to free other slaves. But she has chosen her life and lives very
well.”
“It is smart,” purred Ajira,
“Everyone is already so caught up in the conspiracy of sex, drinking, and
prostitution that they do not even think to look for runaway slaves there. And
it is right next to the largest Hlaalu slave market – the Hlaalu suspect
everyone but Desele.” Alyssa’s eyes narrowed. She herself had been fooled by
the act. But this also meant that Anarenen likely had not gotten the name
mixed up.
“Malcus, I spoke to Anarenen the
other day and he told me that you had said that you and Desele were lovers. Is
this true?” she asked cautiously. Malcus’ eyes widened in surprise. Finally
he laughed.
“A long time ago, perhaps – me and
half of the other Twin Lamps members. The short truth to that is that Desele
is married to her work and I was left in the dust. You’ve got nothing to worry
about there,” he told her with a smile.
“Then why are you off visiting her
for days at a time and why didn’t you think to mention her to me before now?”
she demanded, putting her hands on her hips. Even Ra’vir laughed.
“She’s still a friend. Nothing
more. She also has the best underground slave rescue operation going that I’ve
ever seen,” Malcus replied, “I figured she might be an asset to setting up
something similar in Sadrith Mora.”
“You didn’t answer my questions,”
insisted Alyssa.
“Alright. I was gone for days
because it takes days to travel to Suran, I needed to gather as much
information as possible before I left – since I’m not likely to personally get
to see this project to conclusion myself – and I didn’t mention her because I
didn’t feel that you needed to become needlessly jealous of something that
isn’t happening,” replied Malcus crossly.
“Why aren’t you going to personally
see the conclusion to this project yourself?” Alyssa asked, her eyes
narrowing. Malcus sighed.
“Because I’m being sent on another
long, dangerous, and futile mission, the odds of surviving are low, and if I
don’t go, I’ll be sent back to prison,” he replied flatly. Alyssa’s eyes
widened.
“I… I’m sorry,” she told him,
biting her lip. He waved her apology away.
“Don’t be. I’m just sorry you were
worried over something like that,” he said.
“Where are they sending you now?”
asked Ajira. Malcus sighed.
“Somewhere up near the Red Mountain
area. There is some kind of cult that’s taken up residence called the Sixth
House. I’ve been hearing more about it lately than I care to. But anyway,
they have a base in the area which I’m supposed to clear out. Of course,
everyone else they’ve sent has died. Some immediately from wounds, others more
slowly from corprus disease,” he told them.
“Corprus disease?!” asked Ra’vir,
“The Imperials are sending you on a suicide mission! There is no cure!”
Malcus sighed heavily.
“I’m aware of it. I’m counting
down my final hours now – I have to meet my boss’s contact in Buckmoth Legion
Fort by sundown,” he replied. Alyssa’s heart skipped a beat.
“You can’t go!” screamed Alyssa,
her eyes welling with tears. Malcus looked down on her sadly.
“I wish I didn’t have to,” he told
her softly. He tried to take her in his arms, but she pulled away.
“I’ve just gotten you back! You
can’t leave again! Run away! Hide! Leave the island! Do something!” she
cried.
“Listen, if I’m caught disobeying
my orders after I’ve already been given a second chance I’ll be thrown in
prison for life at best… executed at worst,” he told her, “I’m sorry Alyssa… I
didn’t know any of this was going to happen.” He held his arms out, and this
time she ran to him, sobbing.
“Malcus is strong and brave, he has
survived many worse things,” purred Ajira soothingly. But Alyssa could hardly
hear her over her own crying.
“Hey, she’s right. Come on Alyssa,
I can’t leave you like this,” said Malcus, misery evident in his tone, “I
promise I’ll do everything in my power to come home safely to you. But… but in
the event that I don’t… just know that I love you, ok? I’ll always love you.”
“If Malcus and Alyssa desire some
privacy, you can have the upstairs to the shop for now if you please,” offered
Ra’vir quietly, “Ra’vir is terribly sorry to see Malcus go. And he also warns
that Malcus had better come home safely or we will all suffer as Alyssa does.”
“It is a sad day for us all,”
replied Ajira, wiping the tears from her eyes.
“You’re all strong, you’ll all go
on… and anyway… who knows? Maybe I’ll come home sooner than you think and all
this crying will be for nothing,” Malcus assured, trying to fight back the
tears that were welling up in his own eyes.
“Malcus had better come home,” said
Ajira, embracing him along with Alyssa. Ra’vir growled, but his tone was
forlorn.
“Be safe,” he said finally, pulling
Ajira back as he ushered Malcus and Alyssa up the stairs, offering a paw to
Malcus in friendship. Malcus clasped his hand firmly and smiled at the two
Kajiit.
“I will. Farewell, my friends,” he
told them.
“No! Not farewell,” cried Alyssa.
Malcus smiled.
“…But only for now,” he added with
a smile as he turned to comfort the sobbing girl in his arms.
“You can’t leave. I… I have so
much to say that I don’t even know how to say it,” cried Alyssa.
“It’s alright. Just kiss me then,”
he whispered softly her as he held her tight in his arms.

Alyssa hardly knew what to do with
herself. The night air was warm and crisp. It did little to match her mood.
For a while she just lay on Ra’vir’s bed, wishing her life was a nightmare from
which she could awaken. Her eyes were sore and her head was throbbing. She
couldn’t move. Her body had no will of its own anymore.
“Alyssa?” a soft voice purred from
the stairwell. Alyssa turned her head to see Ajira standing beside her, a
glass of cool water in her hand. She wrung out a cloth and used it to wash
away Alyssa’s tears tenderly, then made her sit up and take the water. After
she had drunk, Ajira wrapped her arms around her.
“Ajira knows everything is going to
be alright,” she said, “You will see. When is Ajira ever wrong?” Alyssa
laughed softly, but her laughter was soon overtaken by more crying. Ajira
pulled her closer.
“Ajira will stay with friend Alyssa
tonight. Ra’vir is out on an errand and invites us both to stay here. Come,
Ajira has brought Alyssa a nice change of clothes so she will feel better, see?”
said Ajira, holding up a plain but comfortable-looking white robe.
“You are very sweet,” said Alyssa,
trying to hold back her tears, “I don’t know how I could ever manage without
friends like you.”
“Aww, Alyssa is very sweet as
well. Ajira thinks the best thing is to keep busy to keep from being sad. It
is better to work on making yourself better. You could work on advancing your
skills, or even earning another rank in the Mages Guild. Or House Telvanni, if
you prefer. And come and visit Ajira often,” she purred.
“Thank you Ajira,” said Alyssa
gratefully, “I’ll try to keep that in mind. Oh, I wish Malcus hadn’t come back
just to leave again. I really do have the most terrible luck, don’t I?”
