**Installment 26**
Caellia jumped at Nathavin’s voice, “What are you so excited about Caellia?” He’d made arrangements with two of his most trusted guards to watch the strange knight and had completed his inspection of the camp. All that had been left to do was to collect Caellia and Kattath. He hadn’t seen Caellia so enthused over anything and wondered what had caused her reaction. The brilliant, breath taking smile she flashed at him did not ease his mind at all. As a matter of fact, it worried him.
Caellia couldn’t help it; she just couldn’t stop the smile from coming. “It’s nothing really.” Let him wonder for a while, she thought to herself. It’s his turn to be unsure for a change, Caellia thought impishly. Now, how would she deliver the news of her little discovery?
“It’s nothing?” Nathavin repeated skeptically. “If it really is nothing, I’m sure you won’t mind telling me then.” He stood silently watching as Caellia merely gave a delicate snicker and shook her head no. Nathavin watched her for a moment or two longer and finally decided that he’d let it pass for tonight. It was late and they needed to rest. “Follow me Caellia. Our resting place is over this way.”
Kattath nearly chuckled at Caellia’s crestfallen look as she was instantly brought down from her moment of a yet to be known victory. Oh yes, Kattath knew Caellia had discovered something that would aid her in achieving a victory over Nathavin in some way. The girls’ aura hid nothing. She cast a look Nathavin’s way and read his aura. Brown and muted blue, exhaustion. Kattath frowned at him and received a dark glare in return. She sighed silently and looked away, he was still angry with her from earlier it appeared and any suggestions she gave would not be welcomed.
“Nathavin I really do not believe that your watching me is necessary. I can rest near Kattath if you really feel I must be watched.” Caellia was desperate now to put a stop to this nonsense. “There is no reason for you to,” she paused as she thought of her phrasing before she picked back up on the sentence, “trouble yourself with watching over me. I’m sure you have other, more important, matters to tend to.” She watched him hopefully as he stayed silent.
“You won’t be troubling me Caellia, you can be sure of that. Kattath, I believe you need your rest as well.” Nathavin gave Kattath a hard look, while his words indicated a suggestion. His body language implied a direct order. Kattath was to leave immediately.
Caellia frantically turned to face Kattath only to find the woman had already murmured her reply, bowed and was now leaving. She made a soft sound of protest before Nathavin grasped her hand and began to lead her to the resting place in silence.
Caellia watched him closely under lowered lashes. He was leading them away from the other elves and orcs. She had always known he valued his privacy, but had no idea he took it to this extreme. They had already passed the outskirts of the encampment and he still kept walking. “Um, Nathavin,” she began cautiously, “why are we so far from the others?” They had traveled quite a distance from the rest of the camp and Caellia was feeling uneasy about how far away they were from the others.
“I had thought to give us a little more privacy since you are so reluctant to rest near me.” Nathavin couldn’t entirely keep the slight tinge of regret out of his voice.
Now Caellia felt bad. He had gone out of his way for her sake and she had argued like a child with him in front of Kattath. “Thank you,” she softly whispered. She almost thought he hadn’t heard her until he responded equally as soft.
“You’re welcome.”
They walked in silence a bit longer until they reached a clearing. Caellia’s breath caught. The clearing was almost perfectly round like the full moon. A stream of water bubbled gently as it created one fourth of the circular border, while tall trees created the rest of the borders. The branches of the trees were full with leaves, yet did not hamper the view of the nighttime sky, full of stars and the full, brightly glowing moon. In the center of the clearing, a warm fire crackled invitingly at her. There were two sets of blankets laid down on opposite sides of the fire. Neither of which she recognized as her own, frowning she asked, “Which one…” she got no further.
“Yours is the one to the right of the fire. The one you had from earlier was not warm enough.” A half truth, he had personally not liked the idea of her sleeping on a blanket that his common soldiers slept on and had ordered this one made.
Caellia glanced again at the blankets and slowly made her way over to them as he set about banking the fire in preparation to sleep. She knelt down and ran her hand over them. They were exceptionally soft and would no doubt be very comfortable. Upon further inspection she saw a pale, fluffy feather poke its way through one of the seams. Kookaburra down? Surely not, that was expensive, far too expensive to make a mere camping blanket out of. She picked the feather up and inspected it closely and gasped softly, it was Kookaburra down! What in Aden is going on, she thought wildly!
Nathavin watched her from the corner of his eye. She had discovered the down and judging from her expression had not expected the blanket to be made from such an expensive material. He continued to surreptitiously watch her as she lay down and was pleased when she quite obviously found the blankets to be comfortable as she heaved a rather deep sigh and fell asleep almost immediately.
After waiting a few minutes, he knelt down by her and softly moved her hair away from her face and just looked at her. Her face was relaxed and peaceful in sleep. There was no outward hint of the strength the young princess held. No outward sign that indicated the sorrows she had recently suffered, both by his hands and Asadars. His plans shifted for the last time. He would protect her and her people, the scrolls be forever cursed. Nathavin would prove himself worthy of her love.
His hand traced lightly over the moon tattoo on her forehead. He’d yet to ask her about it. It seemed to have changed slightly again. He looked closer at it. Yes, it had changed again. The moon was encircling more than half of the flying arrow now. What did it mean?
He didn’t know when he’d fallen in love with her. Perhaps he’d been in love with her from the first moment they met in Giran in the molding and nasty storage building. Or perhaps it was when she had defiantly attacked him in the abandoned stronghold building after learning of Goryn’s death. What he did know, was now that he had her, he was never going to let her go.
“You belong to me Caellia.” He silently told the sleeping princess, she shook her head quietly in her sleep, almost as if she’d heard and had responded in the negative. “Yes you do Caellia. You will never be allowed to leave my side, I shall make certain of that.” Nathavin vowed to the still sleeping princess. His eyes glittered with fierce determination as he stood up and placed a spell around the camp to alert him to any intrusions into the camp or exits from the camp. He then made his way over to his own blankets and lay down for the night.
