Sighing heavily, Starr responded despondently. “Well, one of them attacked Aka…”
“An attack on Aka is an attack on you.” Shin interrupted lowly and dangerously. He had half a mind to hunt the light elves who’d done this down. But the Garden of Eva was known to be treacherous territory. Only those who’d been there before could safely navigate it, and he’d never been there. He was uncertain if she had. But one thing was clear. If there were light elves there, Nathavin would want to know, and possibly round them up. “Starr, Nathavin…”
She held up her hand and stopped him. “I know, Nathavin will want to know about this.” Her voice conveyed her deep irritation and unease with the situation.
Silence fell between them for a long while as Shin’s gaze fell to the fire as he patiently waited for her to come to her own decision.
Starr gnawed her lower lip worriedly. She knew Shin would not let her investigate the light elves on her own, but she couldn’t lead him to Caellia if she were hiding within the Garden of Eva.
Breaking the silence, Shin stood and resumed preparing their meal of shrimp and crab. “We’ll discuss it in the morning.” Nodding wordlessly, Starr quietly got up and began attaching the palm fronds to the wooden timbers he’d placed for them. Once done, she took a small stack of them inside the shelter and placed them down and wove them together lightly before placing their sleeping pallet overtop.
“You’ve done this before.” Shin commented quietly as she stepped back outside, impressed with how quickly she’d managed to get everything together.
“Spent a few years in Enchanted Valley.” Her voice turned slightly wistful as a small smile lifted her features. “Had a few friends, two humans and couple of grumpy dwarves. They fought all the time, but when things got tough, they were fiercely loyal to each other, often risking their lives to protect one another.” Reaching out, her hand traced over the frond nearest to her. “The dwarves taught me how to weave the leaves together…” She trailed off, lost in bittersweet memories for a moment.
Listening to her, the small bit of sadness in her voice, it was clear that this had been quite some time ago. Humans had such short lifespans… Dwarves were little better.
Shaking her head to dispel the brief melancholy, she sat down and took the plate he offered her. “When did you find the time to catch all this?”
“I didn’t.” He admitted with a laugh. Nodding his head in the direction of his fenrir, he explained. “He took off after midday, left me to haul the last few timbers here by myself. About an hour before nightfall he shows back up and led me back to an area where he’d piled most of them. Of course, he’d eaten his fair share also.”
“I didn’t think they’d do something like that.” Honestly she hadn’t thought them intelligent enough to be capable of that level of forethought and planning. Never mind the actual execution of the plan.
“They’re pack animals.” Shin explained with a shrug. “They take care of their pack, which includes us now. You’ve never seen wolves bring back food to their den for the pups?”
“We’re not pups.” Starr replied in amusement. A loud huff from Aka caused both of them to turn to the fenrir.
“I think he just disagreed with you.” Laughed Shin.
“Traitor…” Muttered Starr as she glared at Aka, who simply blinked back at her with his head on his paws.

When the next morning dawned, Shin found that she was gone. Sitting up quickly, he shot a glance to the fenrirs, Aka was gone also. A sharp curse left him as he stood and began putting his armor on quickly. Where the hell had she gone? And why?
Swinging into the saddle of his fenrir, he growled lowly in irritation. “Search! Find Aka!”
The fenrir wasted no time and swung in the direction Aka had gone and began a fast-paced run to catch up.
Meanwhile, several miles ahead, Starr glared at the waterline from atop Aka’s back. Offshore was the hidden entrance to the Garden of Eva. She hadn’t been there in ages, but she knew where it was. Her emotions warred within her.
Loyalty to her kin, or loyalty to Shin.
Did she dare chance bringing a dark elf into one of their most sacred temples? Did she dare potentially revealing Caellia’s hide-out if in fact Caellia had survived?
Struggling with her indecision, she was surprised when Aka lunged to one side suddenly and without warning. At the same time, she saw an arrow dig into the ground where they’d just been.
Spinning the fenrir around, she came face to face with a group of dark elves. Their archer took aim again and Aka bolted into movement, evading the arrow once again. But the spellhowler cast her spell rapidly and clipped Starr.
She struggled to stay in the saddle as she pulled her dagger. Counting quickly, she saw five in total. The archer, spellhowler, and three more hidden in the trees. Too many to fight… Even as she thought this, she paled when she saw one of the dark elven summons, a large creature with many undulating arms floating around.
Another arrow tore past her at the same time as one of the howler’s spells on the opposite side, and the creature was barreling toward her between the two. She turned Aka and prepared to run back the way they’d come. Aka only got a few strides before he stumbled and fell with a mighty snarl.
Thrown from his back, Starr scrambled to her feet to find Aka’s legs and paws caught in a large spell of rooting, anchoring him in place, the large red spell climbing over his body and keeping him pinned to the ground.
From across the sand, she heard the bow as an arrow was drawn. Without thinking, she launched herself in front of Aka and brought the dagger up quickly, deflecting the arrow away from her downed fenrir. Racing forward, she dodged the spells and the summon, taking aim at the archer.
Before she could reach him, another figure suddenly appeared in front of her, the air seeming to shimmer and ripple as the figure was revealed. Her eyes widened as she realized she’d been facing six opponents. The bladedancer lashed out with his serrated swords, catching a small piece of her as she tried to avoid him.
Tumbling in the dirt, Starr immediately shadowed herself, hiding from their view using the skills she’d been taught by Nathavin and Aleyel. She repressed the urge to hiss in pain as blood trickled down her arm in a steady stream.
Alakaere straightened up and stood perfectly still, focusing on sensing his surroundings. “I see that the reports are true. Nathavin has taught you some of our abilities…” He murmured softly, his ear flicking slightly as he heard the slightest sound of the sand shifting behind him.
Seeing his ear twitch, Starr stopped in her tracks. She was immediately behind him. Gripping her dagger tighter, she lunged forward only to be knocked harshly to the ground as he spun faster than she’d thought possible, his leg upraised and catching her squarely in her ribs.
Rolling with the kick, she found her feet and again launched herself at him, her dagger outstretched. Twisting his body, he avoided her dagger and brought one sword down on it harshly. As she lost her balance, he pushed her from behind, knocking her down yet again.
He was unprepared for her to spin on the ground and swipe at his leg. Her dagger bit deep into his flesh at one of the gaps in his armor between the leather lacings. As he stumbled, she jumped to her feet and seized the opportunity to plunge the dagger into his neck.
Alakaere’s eyes widened as he saw her dagger slicing through the air at him. Dropping a sword, his hand gripped her wrist just in the nick of time. The two struggled for a moment before he was able to force her to drop the weapon.
She didn’t even pause as she pulled her backup dagger. But a pained yelp from Aka got her attention and she stilled immediately, her gaze focusing on the fenrir and then back to the ranged dark elves, both of whom were standing ready to attack Aka again.
“We will kill him if you continue fighting.” Snapped the spellhowler.
Starr’s gaze flicked to the summon standing entirely too close to Aka. “You will kill him regardless!”
Alakaere took that moment to bring the pommel of his sword down and knocked her unconscious.
The knight, Diesirae came out from the shadows where he’d been observing the whole thing silently. “Let’s return, Thiefiell wants her back quickly.”
Gathering Starr up, they swiftly used the scrolls blessed by the dark priests and priestesses and returned to the dark elven village.
Aka clambered to his feet and whined pitiably as he loped back to the campsite on his own. As soon as Shin saw him, his eyes darkened considerably. The crisscrossing marks over the fenrir’s body was the work of a dark elven spell of rooting. He cursed savagely, she’d been taken by those loyal to Thiefiell!
