**Installment 27**
Caellia awoke the next morning with the sun shining brightly on her face. She blinked sleepily, rose up and looked around the camp. The fire had mostly died, leaving just a few smoldering embers. Resting neatly off to one side to stay warm was a plate of food. She glanced swiftly around the camp as she made her way to the plate. Where was Nathavin?
Sighing softly, she began to eat as she continued to look around the site. Her brows furrowed in concentration as she focused on the spot they had entered the camp from last night. Once finished with her food, she stretched lightly and gauged the position of the sun. It was already midmorning; they would need to hurry to make it to Rune Harbor on time. Caellia chanted her spell for swiftness and walked to the ‘entrance’ of the clearing, and came to an abrupt and wholly unexpected halt as she crashed into the protective barrier Nathavin had cast the night before.
She ran her hands lightly in front of her to feel out the barriers location since she couldn’t see it. Caellia traced it all the way around the camp, her anger rising with every step. He was forcing her to stay here?! Caellia forced her anger to the side and tried to think calmly as she contemplated how she could get out of the barrier.
“How did you rest last night?” Nathavin stepped into the clearing followed closely by Kattath. They had both witnessed Caellia attempting to leave the barrier. He stood quietly waiting for Caellia’s response as Kattath busied herself around the camp.
Kattath watched both auras flare at the sudden meeting. Caellia’s however caught her attention. The girl was hurt, confused, and distraught. Why would she feel that way? Nathavin had only put the barrier up to protect her. The barrier, that had to be it. Kattath stayed silent for now however, she had no intentions of angering Nathavin again. She would mention it to him later.
Caellia looked at Nathavin for long moments before replying tersely. “I slept fine.” She had been going to thank him for the Kookaburra blankets, but she was just too angry at him for setting a barrier to keep her here to do that now. “Why did you force me to stay here?” She asked curtly, trying with all her might to keep her anger under control. Caellia had seen what he could do when angered or provoked and had no wish to be on the receiving end of his temper. She fully understood now that she had not yet been the recipient of his full fury and had no intentions of ever being the recipient of it.
Kattath could see that Caellia was reining in her temper. The young princess was learning to gauge her battles with Nathavin. Caellia was testing his temper before she launched her verbal assault. This was a good skill to learn since she was going to be bound to him and would need to be able to judge his moods accurately. It would also help her to judge other moods as well, not just when he was going to be easily angered.
He released the barrier and watched as it flashed out of existence. It had been there for her protection but she obviously had come to the wrong conclusion. “The barrier was meant to protect you nothing more.” At her disbelieving look he explained further. “The barrier prevented anyone and anything from entering it unless I wished them to. It also prevented you from leaving when I was not within its confines as well. The purpose was not to trap you Caellia, but to protect you.”
Caellia did not know what to think. She shook her head confusedly, “Do not trouble yourself with protecting me Nathavin. I don’t need it.”
His irritation began to rise swiftly with her constant refusals of not needing protection. “Kattath, see to it that everyone is prepared to leave soon.” He watched as Kattath nodded at him silently and made her way out of the camp, taking their blankets with her. “Caellia, when will you accept the truth? You do need my protection. Even now Asadar plans on taking you from me. His spies are everywhere and I will not lose you to him.”
“Asadar will not be able to capture me Nathavin, not like he did last time. I can slip through Oren territory unobserved and be back in my homeland within a week if I travel alone with no one to slow me down.” Caellia didn’t like the way Nathavin twitched slightly at the last part of her sentence. Perhaps she shouldn’t have mentioned being slowed down.
“Caellia you will have my protection whether you want or not.” He crossed his arms over his chest and dared her to defy him.
The words flew from her mouth before she could stop them, “Goryn didn’t mean for you to…” Caellia got no further as she found herself shoved roughly against a tree.
“Goryn has nothing to do with this! Goryn is dead Caellia!” Why did she continue to bring him up?! “You belonged to me well before you met Goryn Caellia, remember that.”
Caellia’s own temper rose several notches at both his words and the harsh, almost growling way he said them. How dare he say Goryn had nothing to do with this? Her hands came up to his chest and pushed violently. “Goryn may be dead Nathavin but his spirit is still with me! I may technically belong to you Nathavin but make no mistake, I will always love Goryn!” Caellia’s breath hitched in her throat as Nathavin’s eyes went coal black. Curse her temper! Fear flooded her veins as they stared at one another in silent challenge.
Kattath’s words came back to haunt her. ‘It will do you no good and quite possibly a great deal of harm to challenge him.’ She remembered how she had calmed him down before by turning her head to the side slightly. Caellia swallowed nervously and tilted her head to the side. As she began to lower herself into a bow she was stopped by his low, growling voice.
“Run.”
“Why?” Caellia whispered in terror. “Nathavin…”
“I said run girl! I told you to never defy me again! Now you will understand why!” His dagger flashed in his hand and became embedded in the tree to the left side of her head. “You will run, and I will catch you!” He whispered darkly into her left ear.
Caellia wasted no time and bolted away from him, fear coursing through her veins. Eva help her, what had she done?!
