A few days had passed since the Inquisitor had left Skyhold. Three of her companions went with her along her journey. While they were out, Sirena had decided to remain behind. Not to mention, she only wanted to go out when she absolutely needed to, otherwise she prepared staying safe behind the keep’s walls. The American roamed around the halls in her ivory and light purple silk robe and gown. Her fashion was very different compared to the others. At least that’s what she thought. Even the hair style was based on the ancient Chinese style along with the head dress. In her opinion the halls were dark and it was why she liked being outside more. There was more light. While roaming around, her eyes glanced up at the golden plates on the walls that hold the stories or perhaps the history of the lands. Of course, she could be wrong.
Sirena made her way upstairs and through the library; the area the young woman was had a balcony and even over looked the great hall. When she approached the bright area. She noticed the mage that everyone didn’t care for. Though, she didn’t know the Knight-Enchanter, the others did. From what she heard; the woman was snobby. How she saw it, she wasn’t going to judge the woman without meeting her; that would be unfair.
“Hello, my darling! What brings you here?” The American’s eyes widened a bit when she got acknowledged by the ambitious mage. Though, she was trying not to judge, she couldn’t help but wonder what the person was like and from someone who was stuck up, getting greeted first was not what she was expecting.
“Nothing really. I was just taking a stroll around the keep. Do you stay holed up here?”
“Why my dear, it is best to continue to learn through reading.” Vivienne looked the young woman over rather quickly. “My, my, your outfit stands out from the crowd.” Was that a bad thing or a good thing? The woman had confused the outlander quite a bit. Should she wear something that was more fitting in Fereldon? In a way, her outfits reminded her of where she was from even though the time only, she saw hanfus were in Chinese historical dramas.
“Um thank you?” Her eyes caught sight of the dark woman raising her brows at her before a smile had appeared on her face which only confused her more.
“But of course! Now I must ask what do you think of the circle?” Was this a test of sorts? Sirena didn’t want to get involved in the politics. That was something she avoided even in America.
“No offence, but I don’t get involved in politics. For me, it’s better that way.” Did she pass the test, if that what it was? Sadly, she couldn’t tell from the facial expression since it was stoic.
“I see… That is quite smart of you, but no matter what, you will always be involved in some way shape or form. Ignorance is not bliss, my dear.”
“I’ll be sure to keep that in mind.”
“As you should, darling!”
“Well, I guess I shall leave you to your studies.”
“Do come back for more conversation.”
“Okay.” With that, Sirena walked away towards the library to get down to Solas’s hang out where he painted the walls. Mainly, she wanted to get away from that conversation since she didn’t want to get into the topic the Knight- Enchanter wanted to bring up. But it seemed like the famous Vivienne was not going to let it slide. What she could do was avoid the woman, but that would be rude. Perhaps she should learn to use the time period’s politics to her advantage. It was used in everyday life, but the question was, would she retain the things she learned? Shaking her head that was full of doubt, the American continued to walk around blindly. She was getting tired of hearing gossip at every corner. A lot of the time the blonde missed the quiet of her home. In Skyhold, she seemed to always be surrounded by people. The only time she really got her alone time was in her room which had a fireplace. Every now and again, she’d let tears fall at night when no one was watching her.
Eventually, the American found herself in the courtyard where the garden was located. She looked around; the bright sun filled the area making it easier to see everyone enjoying their time outside. Some people were talking in groups while others sat on benches to read their books. Across from where she was standing, she spotted Cullen and Dorian. With steady steps, she approached the two with curiosity wanting to see what they were doing. Once she was close enough, Sirena saw a weird looking board. Should she interrupt them while they were playing? If it were her, she would not want someone to bother her while in a middle of a game.
“Gloat all you like. I have this one.”
“Are you sassing me, Commander? I didn’t know you had it in you.” It was surprising to hear the that as well to the girl who didn’t belong there. Cullen was more of a serious type. At least that was what she thought in that moment.
“Why do I even – Lady Laurelette.” He interrupted himself as he rose up from his seat. To her, he sounded surprised by her visit even though she basically went there every day to water the plants to keep herself busy.
“Are you leaving already? Does this mean I win?” Dorian had a smug look on his face knowing full well why he had stood up in the first place. Accepting the challenge, Cullen sat back down with a determined look on his face.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your game.” Sirena said apologetically. She did want to continue to watch so she could learn what and how to play.
“Alright Dorian, your move.” And the serious man was back. The American was hoping to see the lighter side of him more often. It was already so rare.
“You need to come to terms with my inevitable victory. You’ll feel much better.” Those sound like fighting words to her. But it seemed like the blonde man was unaffected. For her that’d be open game to tease back. How she missed those days where she was able to talk and use her gamer wit with her friends.
“Really? Because I just won and I feel fine.” The young outlander heard his tone of voice which was light, almost playful. She caught Cullen’s chuckle; she couldn’t stop the smile from appearing. If only he was like that more often.
“Don’t get smug. There will be no living with you.” Was it bad that she could taste the saltiness of his failure to win? In a way, she found it funny since he didn’t really hide the fact that he was a poor loser. As he got up and walked away, Dorian had given her a wink.
“I should return to my duties as well…” The outlander watched as his smile faded at the thought of working. But suddenly his smile returned like he didn’t frown at all. “Unless you would care for a game?” This was it! He had invited her to play a game with him! There was a slight problem, the board and pieces confused the hell out of her. Still, Sirena couldn’t pass up this chance to get closer to him.
“Sure, sounds great. I do have to admit… I don’t know how to play chess.” The man behind the commander title looked stunned when she admitted she didn’t know how to play. Mainly the board and pieces were what made it difficult to understand for both were different from where she was from.
“Looks like I’ll have to teach you.” Immediately, he brought her over to the chair to sit in before teaching her how to play their version of chess. To her, it was simpler than the one from her world. “And that is how you play chess.”
“Looks easy enough. You’ll have an easy opponent, Commander.” Sirena said with a smile while sitting across from him.
“As a child, I played this with my sister. She would get this stuck-up grin whenever she won, which was all the time.” While talking his family, she saw a smile on his face that was filled with adoration. “My brother and I had practiced together for weeks. The look on her face the day I finally won… Between serving with the templars and the inquisition, I haven’t seen them in years. I wonder if she still plays.” The American had noticed he had stopped smiling as he thought about his past. It made her wonder if he ever thought about visiting his family. Maybe if she had him talk about his family more, she could get him to smile again.
“Tell me more about your family.”
“Well, I have two sisters and a brother.”
“Where are your siblings now?” She asked before moving a piece. Since it was her first time playing, she wanted to concentrate a bit.
“They moved to South Reach after the blight. I do not write as often as I should.” He admitted as he looked at her. Honestly, she would be in the same boat as him if her family was in Thedas. She rather liked her independence once she got the taste of it. “Ah, it’s my turn.” He said after he got a bit distracted from the talking. It was a great way to get to know him better. The two of them played their pieces and as embarrassing chess was for her, she still had a bit of fun. The outlander could have sworn he was taking it easy on her as well.
“Do you have any siblings?” As she pondered over her next move, her blue-green eyes looked up at him.
“I have one half-sister; I don’t get to see her often, though, so I was raised as an only child.” Did she really miss her sister like Cullen did for his siblings? No, for she didn’t know her sister all that well, so, there was no loss. Not really. Not for her anyway. Though, Sirena did wish for that closeness; sadly, somethings were not to be. It was okay. Even without that closeness, she still turned out alright.
After some moves and counter moves, the game looked like it was coming to an end. For a minute it looked like the blonde man was deep in thought which she found weird. While Sirena was looking at the garden in the mini court yard, a movement was made in her peripheral vision.
“This may be the longest we’ve gone without discussing the inquisition – or matters to it.” She gave him a confused look since they had talked about other matters before. “To be honest, I appreciate the distraction.” It was then the young woman wondered if he had meant the good distractions. Why wouldn’t he? They had been busy with battles while she was also dealing with her own negativity. For her, it was nice change and it was one that she needed. Even though her world had turned upside down when she realized she was in Thedas. Sirena still did the best she could to make a bad situation not so horrible.
“The distraction is very nice indeed. We should spend more time together.” The suggestion had just slipped out. Would he reject the idea? Perhaps she was reading too much into things. For all she knew, he was just being nice. Her blue-green stared down at her lap.
“I would like that.” With surprise, the young woman peered up again, at Cullen. While she was quiet, she was waiting for the rejection that never came. Was she truly right about him then? Did he actually have feelings for her? Just the thought made her heart beat faster in her chest.
“I would as well.”
“You said that.” He answered with a soft chuckle. The American was so embarrassed due to her repeated words to the point she almost missed the tone of voice which he used. It was deep yet soft while also mixed with something she never heard before. “We should… Finish our game. Right. Yes. My turn?” There was a smile tugging at his lips as he fumbled over his own words which she found adorable. The pink tint in his cheeks also caught her attention. Was Cullen truly blushing? From first glance, he wouldn’t seem like the kind of guy to blush so easily. Instead, he looked intimidating when one didn’t know him. Quietly, the American watched as he focused back onto the chess game while observing every line on his face. It took her a moment to realize that he had finished his turn. Another thing she took note of was the fact that he had caught her staring. With a blush on her face, she looked down at the board to make her turn.
“This one is yours.” Cullen leaned back into the seat that he was sitting on. She noticed that he couldn’t smiling at her. “Well played.” Her eyes dropped to the board. There was no way she won. “We will have to try again sometime.”
“Of course. That sounds great!” Was she showing too much enthusiasm? He was much older than her after all. Almost ten years apart. It was better that she kept herself in control. She couldn’t act like the girl she was in the states. Both Sirena and Cullen scooted their chairs before standing up. Since the game was over, it was time to get back to their duties, not that she had much of it to begin with. In fact, it was more so others who had duties while she got to do what she wanted yet, there was nothing for her to do. The time period she was in was sometimes boring as hell when there was no way to keep herself busy.
