**Installment 28**
High Priest Asterios looked upon the peaceful village the light elves called home and sighed. How could things have gone so wrong? Goryn had gotten Caellia back from the dark elves but had died due to Asadar’s treachery. Once again, Caellia was in Nathavin’s possession. He had already sent out a rescue party for her. However, he was uncertain as to whether they would be successful or not. Nathavin’s forces were powerful, far more powerful than their own. Asterios had sacrificed the village’s safety sending so many of their army to the dark elven homelands, but it was a necessary risk that had to be taken. Caellia had reached her 610th year she was no longer their princess, but their Queen now.
Asterios thought back to his younger days, the days before he had served Lord Erenor. The days when the decision was made to destroy the dark elven lands with the curse. He had believed that there was no other way then, he had only been 200 years old and had readily accepted his mission. He had crossed into the dark elven lands with a small force of fighters and together they had unleashed the curse upon the lands. A single tear fell from his eye as he remembered watching the once green, lush landscape turn brown and deadened almost immediately as the curse spread.
They had then fled back to their homeland and were touted as heroes for many years as war raged between the races. Gradually, their fame faded as one by one his comrades on that fateful mission fell beneath the blades of dark elves. Asterios, in fear for his life, shed his armor and disappeared for many years. When he returned he gained favor of Lord Erenor and became his top advisor. He had foolishly believed that there would be no mention again of the curse placed upon the dark elven lands. That was when the threat to both races rose up and Lord Erenor went to the dark elves to establish an alliance.
Asterios’ head hung in shame. His actions from so long ago had hurt so many, his arrogance, indeed the arrogance of his own race at the time had condemned Caellia to be hunted by Nathavin. Asterios had been aware of Nathavin’s existence, he had even known of the existence of the lost scrolls and yet, he had refused to inform Caellia. She was so young when her parents died. Asterios, when he finally told her how and why her parents died, had thought the young princess would never recover from the blow. He had been afraid to tell her about the scrolls, and Nathavin.
Throughout the years of her training Asterios had held off on mentioning anything to her regarding her situation. Even when he received news of Nathavin gaining almost immeasurable power in the northern lands, still Asterios had kept silent. Then there were the frequent raids from roaming bandits that necessitated the marriage between Caellia and Goryn. How had it all gone so horribly wrong?
He glanced towards the sky as a strong wind blew across the guarded balcony overlooking the center of the small village, rustling the leaves of the sacred Mother Tree as it passed. If he had told Caellia just how much danger she had been in, he was sure she would have been far more cautious. He had failed her. They had all failed her, but most of all he had failed her. He had been entrusted to rule in her place until she reached her 610th year. They had lost her mere days before her birthday and to a dark elf no less, their most hated enemy.
“High Priest, Queen Aldana of Dion and King Therus of Giran are here to see you. There is also a human named Hontas here as well although he would not say where he is from.” Sentinel Alberius finished with an air of supreme irritation. The skinny human bishop was annoying, refusing to answer the most basic of questions. He had simply repeated his name and that he must speak with the High Priest immediately.
“Send in Queen Aldana and King Therus immediately, Hontas will have to wait.” Asterios commanded. He turned away from Alberius and collected his thoughts, what he was about to ask was not going to be easy. He walked back inside the temple and took his place at the head and dismissed the trainers for the day. As they filed out of the temple, Queen Aldana and King Therus entered. He waited a beat before beginning, “Welcome to our humble village King Therus of Giran, and Queen Aldana of Dion. I thank you for coming on such short notice and regret that our meeting is due to such dire circumstances.”
“Please, let us dispense with formalities Asterios. I for one do not care for them in my own court and would feel more comfortable if you would just call me Aldana.” The Queen of Dion spoke decisively as her hand punctuated her speech. She shook her short blonde hair as she adjusted her form fitting black armor. “It serves no purpose and clutters matters with irrelevant speech.”
“I agree, let us discuss these ‘dire circumstances’ you mention.” King Therus rumbled. “I did not come all this way to engage in meaningless word play. I have a very busy township to oversee and would prefer to return as soon as possible.”
“As you wish,” Asterios bowed politely to them both. “I have called upon the two of you to request your aid in retrieving Queen Caellia from Lord Nathavin of the dark elves,” he paused slightly and stared at both of them as he delivered the final part of his sentence, “I also request your aid in defending this village from King Asadar of Aden.”
Aldana was the first to regain her voice, “You wish us help you with two battles?”
Therus shook his head, “We can help with one or the other, but not both. Why do you believe you need protection from King Asadar?”
Asterios sighed and began to fill them in on the treachery committed by Asadar.
