It had felt like months with Evelyn’s presence not being in the keep, Skyhold, when it may have only been a week or two. Though, it was hard to tell because of the days went by without a calendar. The American hadn’t seen Cullen since that day they played chess together. While sitting in her chamber, it was in that moment, Sirena received a message from a courtier. When she took the note, her eyes scanned the page before they widened. Already, the Inquisitor had stirred up trouble for the forces had to arrest someone and she was the one to judge him since Evelyn was still out. With a soft sigh, she nodded her head. At least it was something to do, but the responsibility was on her shoulders.
“Tell the others I’ll be down there when I’m ready.” Even before the person left, she ran over to her closet to change her clothes. The outlander pulled out one of her nice dresses that she had made for herself. It was a white, gold, and ivory hanfu. She slipped it on and put the matching belt around her wait. Her hair was done up in a half up and half down hairstyle that matched her robe. Her hands reached out and grabbed the hair ornament then stuck it through her hair. After she had looked at her reflection, another sigh left her lips. Sirena then stood up from her vanity before making her way out of her chambers and descending the stairs.
Once she was down on the main floor, she stepped out into the big room. When the people had set their eyes on her, they immediately quieted down while making a path for her to easily walk through like she was a queen. With her head held high, she made her way over to the throne and sat down on it. Why couldn’t one of the advisors do it? Were they training her to be the next inquisitor just in case the other didn’t make it? That shouldn’t be possible! While she was lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t noticed that Josephine had already made her way up with a prisoner who wore shackles.
“This was rather surprising, after the Inquisitor left for the bog and while she’s still traveling, we discovered this man attacking the building… with a… goat.” Sirena was snapped back to her reality when she heard the Ambassador. Already the young woman was trying to hold back a laugh. “Chief Movran the Under; he feels slighted by the killing of his Avvar tribesmen. Who might I add, attacked first. What should we do with him? Where… should he go?” It was becoming too much to keep amusement hidden about the situation.
“You retaliated the death of your clan… with a goat?” Oh! It was so hard for her to keep a straight face. Did anyone else find it as funny as she did? Her blue-green eyes took a gander around the hall to see that no one was smiling. In fact, a lot of them seem to be judging her to see if she was fit for the role that was given to her by the request of Evelyn.
“A court room? Unnecessary! The Inquisitor killed my idiot son and I answered, as is my custom, by smacking your holdings with goat’s blood.” Sirena didn’t how to judge the situation that was given to her. Hoping for some guidance, she looked over at the ambassador.
“Don’t look at me.” If she was able to groan, she would. She knew that Josephine wasn’t going to help her. It was all up to her. Was this how monarchs felt when things were on their shoulders? It was quite daunting and the power could be dangerous in the wrong hands.
“No foul! He meant to murder Tevinters but got feisty with your Inquisition. A red headed mother guarantees a brat! Do as you must, My Lady, my clan yields. My remaining boys still have brains in their heads!”
“From the sounds of it, the conflict was accidental, Chief Movran. But this situation can’t be repeated.” Finally! Sirena knew what to say along with a decision. “I henceforth banish you and your clansmen to Tevinter with as many weapons as you can carry.”
“My idiot boy got us something after all!” When the young woman heard him laugh after every sentence, she wanted to roll her eyes and face palm herself. It was annoying, but at least it was over. The outlander stood up from the throne which signaled to everyone that it was time to disperse. The guards escorted the chief out of the great hall. As the blonde girl stood on the little platform, her eyes observed those that went back to their usual business. She debated on whether or not she should change her clothes again, but to a more casual look. No matter what, people would recognize her despite the elevation she’d gotten. Her fashion made her stood out for it was different compared to everyone else.
With her mind made up, the young woman stepped down and made her way out of the room with her shoes click clacking on the stone floor. For some reason, her feet carried her through Solas’s solar. It was then she realized where she was heading to; that was towards Cullen’s office. Why though? Was her unconscious trying to tell her something? Sirena thought about turning back but soon thought better of it. There was no way she wanted to be a coward. Was it too soon to talk to him? Perhaps she should just walk over. Just as the American was about to take a step, she stopped herself before sliding her hands down her face. Why was she so nervous to visit him? It wasn’t like anything bad was going to happen. Right? Why did it seem like visiting someone that she was interested in more nerve wrecking than going into battle? Granted, she had only been in one, but it still had damaged her mentally a bit.
Finally plucking the courage from within herself, the young woman made her way towards the Commander’s living quarters. The sunlight was beating down on her pale skin as she walked across the stone bridge. She was glad there was a bit of chill in the air otherwise it was probably going to be a hot day. Once she had approached the door, her hand reached out and opened the door. Almost instantly, Cullen looked up from the papers on his desk to see her slowly make her way inside before shutting the door behind herself. Was it obvious that she was feeling awkward? For a while, the American had been curious to know whether he had feelings for her or not. Was it a good time to find out?
“You did very well today during your first judgement.” His compliment had brought her out of her thoughts. It was nice to hear that she had done well. Sadly, her cheeks had turned pink as she met the man’s golden-brown gaze.
“Thank you. Though, I must admit, it was hard to keep my composure when I heard about the goat.” Sirena couldn’t help but grin from the recent memory that was made. At least in the privacy with Cullen she was able to show how amused she was.
“Yes, if I wasn’t a commander of the Inquisition army, I would have lost it as well.” It was a relief to know that she wasn’t the only one. Although, to her, it was surprising to hear that from him. Her hand went through her blonde locks wondering if she should just be upfront and talk about how she felt. To her disbelief, the shy man had beat her to it. “Uh… I’m glad you came, actually, there was something I… uh… wanted to talk to you about.” It was clear he was nervous about something due to the dead giveaway; his hand reached the back of his neck.
“About what?”
“I would like to talk to you alone…” Cullen had paused to take a deep breath before continuing his statement. “About us.” Her hear beat quickened when she heard what he had said. Was it what she thought it was going to be about?
“Of course, I’ll follow you.” With a simple nod of his head, he made his way to the door that led out to the battlements. Slowly, Sirena followed him over. As soon as she reached him, he had opened the door and motioned for her to go through first. Once the young outlander stepped out, Cullen had followed her out, eventually stepping up beside her. Gently, he grasped her upper arm and took her to where no one was around to interrupt their conversation.
“It’s a nice day.” Her eyes blinked a few times before her steps halted. She couldn’t help but look at him with befuddlement. The comment came out of nowhere.
“What?” While she had turned to face him, her back faced the stone wall. The older gentleman had also faced her. It was going to be an awkward conversation if that was the start of it.
“It’s… There was something I wanted to discuss with you.” Whatever was on his mind made the worry on his face very much visible. Perhaps she should say what was on her mind before he spoke.
“Before you say anything; do you mind if I say what is on my mind?” What she didn’t add was the silent ‘while I have the courage to do so’.
“Yes, go ahead.” The intensity of his gaze made it rather difficult to the point she was going to have to force her confession out.
“Even though we have been fairly busy. I can’t help but think of you. And it’s becoming… well all the time, really.” There it was, her confession. Would it be enough for him to understand? Without even noticing, Lady Laurelette chewed on her lip just waiting for the rejection that she thought was going to come. As soon as his face moved from hers to look at the grounds, she felt her heart plummet which made her look down.
“I can’t say I haven’t wondered what it would be like.” When she heard his words, her head snapped back up only to see him peering in another direction. She noticed Cullen was walking again and so, she followed his lead while keeping up with his slow stride.
“May I ask, what’s stopping you?” Sirena wanted to know why he was preventing himself from pursuing her especially now that she found out that he did indeed have feelings for her. Once he stopped walking, he turned to face her again which made her halt in her tracks right away. The man was confusing her; and she already got that way a lot as is. Where she came from, if someone liked another, they would do what they could to get their crush.
“You’re the Inquisitor’s cousin. We are at war. And you… I didn’t think it was possible.” Was that a hint of a smile she saw? But, oh, how that gaze of his made her want to melt.
“And yet I’m still here.”
“So, you are… It seems too much to ask.” He had moved closer to her as his voice softened causing the butterflies in her stomach to flutter around. She couldn’t tear her eyes away from his, they entranced her. “But I want to – “Cullen slowly leaned forward like he was waiting for her to tell him to stop, but she never did. Like a piece of metal getting pulled by a magnet, her eyes slowly closed while moving forward as well to press her lips against his. They were so close when they got interrupted.
“Commander!” Her face turned red as she moved her head away so the other person couldn’t see her while the man in front of her grew rather agitated. While in the heat of the moment, she hadn’t noticed his hands were holding her hips. “You wanted a copy of Sister Leliana’s report.” The one who had interrupted was heard walking over to the pair oblivious to what was going on.
“What?” She couldn’t tell who stood before her now. The Commander or just plain Cullen? To her, it was a mixture between the two.
“Sister Leliana’s report? You wanted it delivered “without delay”.” That young man was persistent as he held the report out to Cullen. Though, she couldn’t see his face, the American was sure that the one she was now with was glaring at the aloof person. Wait… Was she with the one whom people call the “lion of Honneleath.”? When the messenger finally got the hint, his eyes turned big in terror before looking over at her. She turned her head away for he did come at a bad time. “Or… To your office… Right…” With fear, the one in green leather backed away before making a run for it. After what felt like a minute or two, Cullen had remained standing at his spot, staring, like he was making sure the messenger was gone.
“If you need to – “Sirena let out a gasp of surprise when she felt Cullen’s lips against hers as he pressed himself against her. With instinct, she slipped her arms around his neck while kissing him back. The man before her, slowly moved his head away to gaze into her eyes.
“I’m sorry… That was… um… really nice.” That smile he gave her was contagious to the point her own lips curled up at the corners. The color of her cheeks had become pink which was something she couldn’t control.
“You don’t need to be sorry… That was something I have been wanting.” Did she really admit that out loud? At least now she knew where she stood with him. If she was honest with herself, it both, made her happy and scared her. How much damage could she do? He wasn’t supposed to be with her yet there they were and she couldn’t hide nor deny her feelings anymore.
“Oh. Good.” His voice lowered before he leaned in for another kiss on the battlements during the sunset. If the moment was captured on camera, it would most likely be picture perfect. Sadly, there were no such technology in the time she was in. Once the two had parted, Sirena walked up beside her Commander to his chamber. Because of the messenger, the door was closed when they approached it with grins on both their faces.
It didn’t take them long to get inside the office portion of his room. After being outside for so long, Sirena noticed how dark it was in the room. The only light it gets is from the candelabra and windows behind the desk. Was it really a window? In her modern-day life, windows had glass to block the breeze from getting into the space. She should really stop comparing the time she’s from and where she was at currently otherwise the young woman was going to make herself homesick. When she finally snapped out of her thoughts, she realized that she had a question for him; though, it could wait another day.
“I can escort you back to your chambers.” His offer made her feel flattered, but knew she couldn’t accept it.
“No, it’s okay. I’m sure you have a lot of work to do as much as I’d love to take you away from it; that wouldn’t be very responsible of us.” Her eyes looked up at him to see a mixture of disappointment and understanding. It wasn’t for her benefit, but his. “You can next time.” The outander noticed his head made a movement in a nodding motion before he behind his desk. If only she was able to tell him how much he made her feel in the moments they had shared. Of course, there were other times she could do so. Once her boyfriend began to work on reports, the young American slipped out of the office and made her way back to the main part of the keep.
As soon as she entered from Solas’s little art area, she noticed some eyes were on her while they whispered behind their hands. That was never a good sign; it normally meant people were gossiping about someone. In the world she was in anyway, it was different where she was from. People normally stop talking and stare at the person whom they were prattling about. The American made her way over to a person whom she felt comfortable with; which was Varric. As soon as she had approached the dwarf, she saw a mischievous smile on his face.
“There has been a lot of jabber about you.”
“Really? What about me?” Her curiosity was beginning to get the better of her. What has he heard about her? Was it bad? Knowing she shouldn’t keep her hopes up, the outlander mentally prepared herself for the worse. It was better that way so something wouldn’t come as a surprise and hurt her. Sirena saw a brow rose up on the short man’s face like she should already know.
“You haven’t heard? There’s a rumor going around that you are with our fair-haired Commander.” Her jaw dropped slightly as her brows rose up from surprise. How would anyone know already? She had just gotten with Cullen a moment before. How was it possible? Did someone see her besides the messenger? They were out in the open, but still, so soon?
“What? But how? It only just happened!” She said in exasperation as she looked at Varric.
“Word spreads fast here in Skyhold and everyone knows. I will tell you this much, Cassandra may not approve of this.” After he explained how word spreads fast like wildfire, it made sense to her. The young lady should have thought about the gossip. How did she forget?
“Luckily, it’s not up to her.” Though, she knew what he said was true. There was no way she was going to approve of their relationship. It was bad to assume things, so perhaps she may not mind at all.
“No, but she will make her view obvious, so, best of luck to you.” It seemed to her that he looked forward to seeing how the seeker would react to the news.
“You’re looking forward to this, aren’t you?”
“That I am.”
