Twenty-Nine
The caverns shook, sending debris raining down on their heads. A shield of Light protected them from the worst of the falling rocks and dust, and Anduin pulled everything he had to keep the shield from failing as it was struck by boulders the size of their heads. Shalya held onto Anduin to keep him from collapsing under the weight of the rocks and pulled him along with her as she ran after Wrathion and Tyrrania. The two black dragons were moving ahead of them, acting as both sword and shield as they came across swarms of orcs trying to escape the collapse.Anduin took a deep breath and released his spell, sagging against Shalya's shoulder for a brief moment. Then he gained his balance and grabbed Shalya's wrist in a tight hold before taking off after Wrathion and Tyra. The salvos against the caverns were just love taps compared to what a pissed off dragon could really do, but it was still dangerous to those trapped inside.
The four drew to a halt in an intersection, and then Shalya took the lead, running down the leftmost path. They collided with a pair of fleeing orcs carrying sickly-looking eggs, and before the two orcs could react, Shalya and Tyra were on them. Shalya's blade flashed in the small corridor, opening up a thick wound on one orc's throat. The other was lucky to avoid Shalya, but Tyra was right there to meet the orc's counterattack. The blade Shalya had given her swung left and down, cutting off the orc's hands before she turned the blade to the flat to catch the falling egg. Shalya leaped forward, her sword driving between the orc's ribs just to the right of the sternum. She jerked upward, severing bone and muscle, then slid her blade out as the corpse crumpled to the floor.
Wrathion and Anduin stared, gaping.
"Girls are scary creatures," Wrathion whispered to Anduin, leaning close to his ear. Anduin only nodded, his eyes on Shalya as she turned to face him.
Tyra studied the two eggs - the one broken on the floor in a puddle of viscous slime and the one balanced carefully on the flat of her blade - with scrutinizing intensity. Then she turned the sword and the egg there dropped to the ground, landing with a sickening splat and filling the hall with more goo.
"Why would you do that?" Wrathion asked, shocked.
"Because it was dead anyway." Tyra responded. "It wouldn't have survived even if it managed to hatch."
The caverns shook again.
"We don't have time for this, Wrathion." Anduin said. "We need to get out of here before the whole mountain comes down on us."
Wrathion seemed to be a statue for all that he was moving when Anduin tried to pull him after the girls. At last, Wrathion took a step forward and ran with Anduin toward the entrance of the cave. There were bodies everywhere, some crushed by rocks, others by feet, and they all pointed at the way out. The four of them ran, not bothering to speak anymore, which in Anduin's opinion was a good thing. Wrathion was the last person to question about the validity of killing one's own kind, but with recent events - the shock of discovering that he wasn't alone, the attack the dark shaman had made on him - Anduin didn't want to press Wrathion's self-control.
Shalya ran out first into the large open cavern. Daylight illuminated her as the mouth of the cave yawned open to the forest beyond. She was nearly to the threshold when she suddenly threw herself backwards to avoid having her head removed from her shoulders.
Anduin rushed to her side, calling on the Light to heal the shallow slice she'd gotten on her cheek. Wrathion was soon by his side, along with Tyra, who was hissing softly.
"Korvek." Tyra snarled.
The massive Orc stepped out of the shadows, his sword dripping with blood. Not all of it was Shalya's, Anduin noticed with trepidation. There were corpses littering this room too, and not all of them bore signs of having been crushed by rocks. Korvek studied Shalya, his lips pulled back over his teeth. "Hello, Tyra. Why don't you be a good little girl and call to dear Athena?"
"And have her land so you can shoot her?" Tyra snarled. "No."
Korvek shrugged. Then he surged forward with a speed Anduin had only seen a few orcs possess, coming at them with his sword held high. Shalya met the downward strike with her own sword, grunting under the pressure. The two swords shook, creating sparks; Korvek's sword was caught on the crosspiece of Shalya's, leaving the only two actions to be lifting his sword from hers or sliding downward and hoping to cut her leading arm or leg. He chose the latter. Shalya shoved him back at the same time the sword started to slide, and managed to get out from under Korvek's blade. She swung around him and would've sliced his side if he was any slower than he was. Anduin threw a shield around Shalya to keep Korvek's blade from cutting into her stomach when he knocked her blade wide. Shalya danced back, holding her sword in front of her defensively.
The cavern shook with the force of a frightening roar.
Korvek smirked. He quickly changed his target from Shalya to Anduin, who was still flanked by Wrathion and Tyra. Anduin threw himself back as Korvek charged, allowing Wrathion and Tyra to scatter. Korvek was fast, almost as fast as Varian, and loomed above Anduin seconds before the boy could gather enough strength to form a shield. A fireball sailed over Anduin's head, singing a few blonde strands before crashing into Korvek's chest. Anduin fell backwards and scrambled back, joining Shalya as she hurried to his side to make sure he was still in one piece. Wrathion, little wings fluttering, closed his mouth and swallowed the last bit of fire back down his gullet. Korvek began to laugh.
"If that is the best you can do, you're a sorry excuse for a dragon!" Korvek crowed.
"Who says I was trying to hurt you?" Wrathion replied, giving as best a smirk as his dragon maw would allow.
Korvek didn't seem to understand what Wrathion meant until he realized his back was to the opening of the cave. He spun low to avoid the massive claw that grabbed for him the moment the light of the outside was blocked by something huge. His sword flashed even in shadow and sliced upwards across the claw's palm. The creature blocking the outside light howled and snatched its claw back before flinging itself out of the way of the charging Orc. Korvek lunged at the creature, moving them both out of sight. Tyra let out a wordless cry and ran to the mouth of the cave, jerking back to avoid being struck by a massive tail.
Anduin, Shalya, and Wrathion quickly hurried to her side and peered out of the cave to see Korvek fighting a huge black dragon. It was fully grown, with massive forward facing horns meant for goring, huge sharp claws and sharper teeth, and burning crimson eyes. It took up the entirety of the field before the cave, and its huge membranous wings blotted out the light, casting everything into shadow.
"Athena!" Tyra cried. If it weren't for Anduin and Wrathion grabbing onto her shoulders and arms, she probably would've ran toward the black dragon squaring off against Korvek.
"Stay back, Tyra." Growled the huge black dragon. Anduin glanced at Wrathion, and found him staring open-mouthed at Athena. Anduin couldn't blame him, really. Athena was huge, almost the size of an Aspect. Had she been on Azeroth, Anduin doubted that Wrathion would've been able to coordinate her death as he had the others of his small flight.
Anduin gripped Wrathion's shoulder to get his attention. "We need to get out of here."
Wrathion glanced at Korvek and Athena before looking back at Anduin. "No offense, Anduin, but I don't see how that's possible without us getting killed."
Tyrannia shook herself. "I can carry the human and Draenei girl. You can transform and fly. If we get off the ground before Athena starts her attack, we should be okay."
"Okay being the operative word," Shalya breathed, her words almost drowned out by the shriek of metal on armored scales. They all looked over at the battling duo, watching Korvek nimbly avoid Athena's claws and mace-like tail while he struck at her with his sword.
"Besides running and hoping we don't get crushed or sliced to pieces or burned by fire," Anduin said, "flying out of here is our only option."
Wrathion looked at Tyra. "Are you sure you can carry them both?"
Tyra gave him an arch look. "I wouldn't have said anything if I couldn't."
Anduin and Shalya exchanged a look. Before anyone could move, a great tremor shook the earth beneath their feet, the result of Athena bashing the ground where Korvek once stood with her massive tail. Tyra cursed and began her transformation, her limbs elongating while her skin darkened and became covered in black scales. It only took a matter of seconds, but to Anduin, it felt like a lifetime before Tyra stood before them in her true form. Even though she was only a drake, she still towered over Anduin and Shalya, and she certainly outclassed Wrathion, who seemed reluctant to transform now that Tyra stood there in her natural form.
Shalya didn't hesitate. The moment Tyra unfurled her wings, she was climbing up into the hollow between the young dragon's neck and shoulders. There was no way to secure herself, but she didn't seem to notice. She reached down for Anduin, grabbed his wrist and pulled him up behind her. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, and soon had a passenger himself, as Wrathion's tiny claws dug into his shoulder. Tyra raised her wings and leaped upwards at the same time she pushed her wings down, slowly rising into the air. It was clear she'd never had passengers before, for her flapping was labored and it took her a few minutes to even rise off the ground enough to catch a breeze.
She was a hundred feet above the ground and still rising when Korvek turned his attention on them. Anduin called upon the Light and threw a shield around Tyrannia seconds before a sword would've pierced her side. The shock of nearly being impaled was still enough to make her wobble and tilt to one side. Anduin scrabbled to keep his hold on Shalya, but found himself slipping off Tyra's side. It was a split second, and suddenly Anduin was falling through the air, headed straight for the ground.
