**Installment 29**
Caellia swung around the nearest tree and flattened herself against its sturdy trunk and took a good look at her surroundings. There was nothing but trees in every direction, and although she knew that she was roughly paralleling its path, she had lost track of the road long ago. She steadied her breathing and concentrated as she focused her sensitive hearing, listening for her pursuer.
Twice she had thought she had lost him only to be surprised when he turned up in front of her. She had figured out that he would parallel her own course for a time before getting ahead of her and waiting before striking. She had since begun doubling back on her own trail, always mindful to stay headed in the same direction as the road. Caellia had no idea if Kattath and the others knew what was happening or not, or if they had even continued on to Rune. Since Nathavin had told her to run she had not seen anyone at all. Nor had she seen any of the local creatures in the area, which suggested that someone knew of the situation and was creating a ‘safe’ zone for the chase. Her thoughts scattered as an arrow pierced a nearby leaf before landing with a solid thunk on the tree opposite of the one she was currently leaning on.
“You have no time to spare resting Caellia. I told you to run, and I will tell you when to stop!” Nathavin strung another arrow and took aim again as Caellia shot from her resting spot. “Too slow!” Nathavin roared at her as he released the arrow and watched it graze her calf as she ran. “The next one will bring you down if you aren’t quicker than that!” He downed a vial of green potion before setting off at very quick run, he intended on running her to the ground this day. She would not defy him ever again. He hadn’t wanted to take this method with her, but it seemed he had little choice in the matter. He only hoped his control would hold when he finally caught her.
Caellia cursed in every language she knew as she felt the arrow graze her right calf. She continued to dash through the trees, the leaves whipping her face as she passed. Why couldn’t she keep her mouth shut when it came to him? Caellia ignored the pain shooting through her leg and continued to run. Her only hope now was to outrun him and hide until she could find a weapon of her own.

“Look at all th' loot! We picked a fine one thet time!” The rowdy human, a treasure hunter by trade, yelled to his companions. He continued to paw through the satchel the unfortunate orc had dropped upon his death. “He even dropped a blood to'nado edge fo' us!” He looked up in surprise as a short, fat dwarf snatched the satchel away from him, “Whut? Hey!” he called out in irritated confusion.
“I got 'im ter drop that so it's mine!” The short but stout little dwarf huffed at the human while brandishing his bloodied axe threateningly.
“Enough of that, we will divide the loot evenly once we reach Rune as we agreed.” The third member of the group stood up and grasped her bow. The female human stalked over to the human male, “I will dispose of him now, be patient,” she whispered in his ear. She then next turned to the dwarf and in an amazing transformation, sauntered towards him, her hips swaying rhythmically. She gave a twisted smirk, the dwarven male could only stare in fascination as she slowly made her way to him. She bent down low and leaned in close to him. “Come with me, we will leave him here to die. He thinks that I’m going to kill you now, but it is he who will die.”
The dwarf raised his eyes from her attributes and gave a sly bearded grin. “Oh yor a clever one after me own 'eart. I knew there were a reason why I kept yer 'round.”
The archer chuckled, “I thought you kept me around for an entirely different reason.”
“Well that too me dear, that too,” he conceded with a lustful look at her. They headed away together to a safer area, content with leaving their companion to die alone when the comrades of the fallen orc tracked him down.

Kattath listened to the report of the fallen orc they had sent out as part of a trio to help keep Caellia safe. The crooks had no idea what they had just done. “You are certain there are only three of them correct?”
“Yes, we have ascertained their position and we can eliminate them with a minimal force. Five would be enough.” The large orc, the captain of his squad replied evenly.
“Go quickly and take care of this problem. Then resume your duties in regards to Caellia.” Kattath continued, “Remember, Nathavin does not know we are clearing the way for both him and Caellia through this forest of death. The dark blood has most likely taken hold and he will not distinguish friend from foe should you happen across him and Caellia.”
The large orc nodded his head in acknowledgement before setting off to gather his four companions.

King Therus could not believe his ears. Asadar had killed Goryn? It did make a certain kind of sense; Goryn had been growing more powerful recently but not enough to label him as a threat. Goryn had always been a staunch supporter of Asadar. He could not believe that Asadar had dismissed that so easily. He glanced at Queen Aldana, wondering what her reaction was as he began to speak lowly, “I can pledge one third of my forces to protect this village. However, we must decide who it needs to be protected from the most. I cannot provide enough assistance to protect from both Asadar and Nathavin.”
Queen Aldana looked speculatively at Asterios before responding, “I will provide enough forces to help you with Asadar. You must deal with Nathavin alone. It was your irresponsible decisions that provided him with the opportunities he’s had to take Caellia. This is clearly a conflict between your two peoples and must be dealt with alone. Asadar broke an alliance with Goryn that was intended to free Caellia from Nathavin. That is a critical violation of peace treaties and must not be tolerated.”
Asterios could only agree with her. It had been his poor decisions that led to this situation. If only he’d informed Caellia, he shook his head there was no sense in thinking on that now. “Then we shall deal with the dark elves on our own, I thank you for your insight Aldana.” He gave a low bow to her and then turned to Therus as he began to talk.
“We need to make a battle plan. Asadar will not wait forever to make a move. I do not think he has a hope of taking Goddard and I believe he knows this as well. Nathavin has most likely reinforced it and moved more troops to guard it since Goryn’s siege on it.” Therus rumbled. They continued discussions well into the night, determined to protect the small village.

The orc and his four comrades looked scathingly down upon the human female archer. She had killed her two companions and had dared to think of trying to kill them. The captain of the squad backhanded her across the face, “Do you know who you are dealing with wench!?”
“Why should it matter orc? I do as I please!” The woman looked around for a way out, ignoring the blood trickling from the cut on her lip and shuddered when she realized that there was none. Perhaps she should’ve waited to kill the lecherous dwarf and stupid human upon their return to Rune she thought ruefully. Her head snapped up as the gargantuan orc picked her up by her shoulders and held her above his head. She was going to die. She closed her eyes and waited for death, and waited. She dared to take a look and noticed that all the orcs were concentrating in one direction. The grip on her tightened as she began to struggle and she instantly stopped. It tightened again quite painfully and as she began to struggle she noticed a harried and quite frightened looking light elven female launch herself into the clearing and come to a skittering halt.
Caellia took in her surroundings quickly, her tangled hair swirled around her face and she swept it back quickly paying no mind to the twigs and leaves that had become entangled in it. The five orcs she recognized as part of Nathavin’s group she’d left for Rune with. The human female she hadn’t seen before and it didn’t look as if she was friendly anyhow. The captain of the group drew her attention.
“Are you alright Princess?” He looked around warily, Nathavin had to be nearby. He motioned for his squad to be ready to retreat.
“Please help me! Please! Take me back to Kattath! He’s going to kill me!” Caellia begged frantically. She ignored the human struggling in the Captains grip and focused solely on him.
“He will not kill you Caellia. However, he might kill me and my squad should we interfere.”
Caellia felt tears sting her eyes and fought them back, “Please! You must help me get back to Kattath! I beg you!”
The Captain felt a strange sensation and looked at the spot Caellia had emerged from and froze. A slight flickering light reflected from the sun was the only signal that an arrow was pointed directly at him. He began to ease away from Caellia as slowly as possible and motioned his squad to do the same. “Caellia, I must not interfere. You he will not kill, I am not so fortunate.”
The human archer saw her break and took it. A swift kick to his chin and she was down. She whirled around grabbed Caellia’s hair and yanked backwards painfully, “You will help me get away!” She looked towards the spot the orc had been looking at seconds before, “Come out now if you wish to keep her alive!”
The orc Captain looked on in stunned amazement. His head snapped to Nathavin as he slowly made his way out of the bramble he’d been concealed in.
“Let. Her. Go.” Nathavin spoke forebodingly, each word a thinly veiled warning. The bow was creaking under the stress of having not been released. “You will not be told twice.”
“I will let her go when I get to Rune!” The human began to drag Caellia backward to the woods.
The bow creaked ever louder as Nathavin drew the string further back. The tip of the arrow flashed as a magic stone, concealed in his right hand, was added to the arrow.
Caellia’s eyes met Nathavin’s and an understanding passed between them. Caellia took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and then allowed herself to fall heavily to the ground. She heard the release of the arrow and felt the human fall backwards behind her. As she looked up she saw Nathavin stalking toward her.
“Leave.” His comment was directed at the orcs, but his eyes were on Caellia. The pull of the dark blood was strong, her actions over the next few minutes would determine if his strength held or not. If she bolted…he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold back.
“Nathavin, please, I’m tired.” She had moved into a kneeling position with her head lowered.
“Do you understand now why you will receive my protection? Will you continue to fight me?” He paused, waiting for her reply.
“Yes, I understand that I’m not strong enough to protect myself. No, I will not continue to fight you.” Caellia’s throat burned as she choked back her tears. She had never felt so humiliated before. She was thankful her long hair hid her face from view.
“Do you understand that your place is with me and I will accept nothing less than this?” His words became harsh as he fought a rapidly losing battle against the dark blood, “You are mine! I told you once before that I would protect you from Asadar, and you have seen that no one will protect you from me!”
Caellia shuddered as she felt the impact of his words. “I understand that my place is wi…” She broke off and a startled yelp escaped her lips as she was violently wrenched to her feet. Caellia felt a hand on her lower back and another bunched in her hair as she was forced to look up into Nathavin’s grey eyes.
“Look at me when you say that Caellia! I want you to realize who you are speaking to! You will not see Goryn before your closed eyes as you say that!”
“No,” she began weakly, then stronger, “No! It’s too painful! I can’t!”
“You can’t what, Caellia?” He growled at her, “Can’t admit to me where you belong with your eyes open? Is seeing me instead of Goryn that detestable to you?” He tossed her away from him. “By Shillien, I’ll make you forget Goryn!”
Caellia stood up from where he’d tossed her and stared at him before saying calmly, “You can’t make me forget someone Nathavin. You’ll never be able to do that.” Why was he so bent on her forgetting about Goryn? Why was Goryn such a sore topic with him anyway? She was going to find out. Caellia calmly evaded his grasp as he lunged for her and deftly moved to the other side of the small clearing.
“You will forget him Caellia!” Nathavin lunged again for her and was further infuriated when she nimbly avoided him for a second time.
“Why are you so keen on me forgetting him Nathavin?” Caellia swiftly avoided his grasp while reaching out and plucking a single arrow out of his quiver. She began to twirl the arrow between her fingers, relishing the fact that she had managed to swipe it from him. “Temper, temper, Nathavin. You are letting your anger cloud your judgment.” Her eyes remained fixed on him as he straightened up and glared daggers at her. “Answer my question Nathavin. Why are you so adamant I forget Goryn?” Her voice had gone icy cold.
“That does not matter, all that matters is that you will forget him.” He paused before saying ominously, “You should’ve grabbed my dagger. You will not get another chance to arm yourself.”
Caellia readied herself as he charged her again, this time however, there was no dodging him.
