Torvynaar gazed over his handiwork. It had been two days since he’d attached the barbed mesh to her ribcage, just underneath her breasts. Every breath she took caused the barbs to dig into her flesh. Between that and the painfully tight collar, she couldn’t draw in a proper breath. However, she’d resisted telling him what he wanted to know.
Her continued resistance was admirable really. Even if it was causing him some consternation. Thiefiell was growing more and more impatient by the hour and was beginning to make thinly veiled threats about what might happen if he did not get the answers sooner rather than later.
Taking one of the canes with embedded blades in it, he slowly dragged it over her skin, purposely keeping the blades pointed away so as not to slice her, yet. “Since you do not wish to inform me what weapon you prefer, how about you tell me about these markings. Clearly they were made by one of our mages and they’re meant to seal away magic. How did you come to have them engraved upon you?”
He was genuinely curious. Aside from the basic fact that she’d escaped with Shin and potentially knew where Nathavin was, he knew little about her. The runes could’ve been from a previous encounter or from her more recent activities.
As the tip of the cane passed over her stomach, she reflexively flinched as a spasm of pain made itself known. She felt lightheaded from not breathing properly, and when she opened her eyes, the room seemed to spin. The sharp sting from the cane as it landed across her stomach had her violently expelling what little breath she had.
“How did you get the engraved runes?” Torvynaar repeated calmly. He waited patiently as she regained her senses. When she raised her head and leveled a cold, steely stare at him, he grinned. “You slept with Shin, but that glare is all Aleyel’s.”
Starr felt her face flame in embarrassment at how casually he referred to her situation with Shin. Noticing this, Torvynaar’s grin grew.
“What? You thought I wouldn’t know about you and Shin?” He tsk’d at her. “He and I, we trained together. Our master’s considered us equals. We gained Thiefiell’s attention at a young age and were handpicked by him for elite training and missions. There were nearly a hundred missions we undertook together. I know him nearly as well as I know myself.”
Reaching out with his free hand, he traced her cheek to her jawline. “Which means I know you are just his type. And not simply because you’re a light elf. No, not every light elven woman captured his attention the way you have. You are the first to have captured him so completely.”
Her heart seized painfully. This was a dangerous line of thought. Not for her, but for Shin. If what this elf said was true, then it was conceivable that they could use her to force Shin to give them the information they sought.
Or it could just be a clever ploy to get her talking…
Her eyes narrowed as she struggled to focus on him amidst the still swimming background of the cell. “You’re wrong.” She rasped, her voice weak. Breathing in as deeply as she could, she continued. “While he might’ve been… Infatuated with me in the beginning. He…” She took another breath. “Soon got tired of me fighting him… and only keeps me with him… because Nathavin ordered him to do so.”
She paused to both catch her breath and think carefully on the lie she was weaving. One slip here and the elf in front of her would kill her.
“And why would Nathavin consider you worthy enough to ‘order’ Shin to keep you with him? To keep you safe?”
“The runes, they are… there to bind my magic…” True enough…
Guffawing, Torvynaar retorted. “Light elven magic is no match for ours. Try again, precious.” He tossed the cane to the ground and drew his sword. Placing it against the runes tracing her body, he allowed the blade to glide over her flesh threateningly. “And do be sure you’re telling me the truth…”
A measure of true bitterness edged into her voice. “You dark elves are always… underestimating our magic… But you forget that it was our … magic that destroyed your lands. Cursed them into a … constant state of death and decay!”
The sword’s tip swiftly found it’s way to just under her chin. “Ah, ah. Reminding me of what light elves did to our homelands while you’re in this position is not the wisest choice.” His voice was light and airy, despite the clear threat he’d just leveled. “Let’s try and stay on topic, shall we?” But, she did have a point. The spell that had been cast long ago by the light elves had doomed their lands to become infernal swampy marshlands and sickened, infertile forests.
“Point is, they discovered that Asterios was training… powerful spellsingers. We were developing… new spells. More powerful… spells.” She huffed desperately, cursing the tight collar and barbs.
Torvynaar regarded her silently, his blade steady at her chin. “And just what were you going to do with these new spells?” He finally asked her.
Starr laughed as much as she could. “Nathavin wanted me to use them… on Thiefiell. But I… tried to use them… on him. And for that, he… had my magic… sealed away.” She caught his gaze and held it unflinchingly. “I could’ve killed him. I would’ve… killed him.” There, the story had a kernel of truth to it, but also one big lie. Hopefully it would be enough that they wouldn’t try to use her against Shin.
“Prove it.” Torvynaar replied as he effortlessly slid his blade down her front. Slowly and meticulously tracing the runes and breaking the sealing spell.
Starr screamed as blinding pain ripped through her. She could feel unholy and dark energy flowing from the sword into the wound it was leaving behind. Her magic reacted to the energy coming from the blade and she could feel it bubble to the surface with a ferocity that she’d never before felt.
Torvynaar watched in fascination as ice crystals formed on his sword and quickly ran up it’s length. Pulling the weapon away from her, he flicked it powerfully, the ice falling off. His gaze sweeping around the room, he noticed that the walls were covered in ice, his breath was visible as the air temperature plummeted, and the bucket of water that had been brought in was frozen solid.
All of this any highly skilled spellsinger could accomplish with ease.
However, what drew his attention was the pained scream of the guard outside the door. Moving to the door, he looked out and saw the hapless guard on the ground. The sight was unlike anything he’d ever seen. While most spellsingers flung water and ice at their victims, often impaling them with sharp spears of ice, her magic worked differently. The ice spears were being expelled from the body. Instead of clear water, the ice protruding from the guard was composed of flesh and blood.
Racing back inside the cell, he swiftly reversed his grip on his sword and brought the pommel down in a precise arc. As she slumped against the wall unconscious, he let out a small sigh of relief. “Well, aren’t you full of surprises?”

Meanwhile, Shin strode through the tunnels, senses on high alert. It had taken him and Nathavin’s operatives three days to get back to the caverns and while he’d refrained from using the scrolls during that time, he’d just recently used the second of the five scrolls of concealment so that he could safely traverse the caverns. Meaning he had less than forty-eight hours to find Starr and get her to safety.
Hours passed as he meticulously searched the various chambers and cells known to house their war prisoners. Finally, he came to one and instantly knew she’d been there. Traces of her magic lingered in the air. Someone had broken the seals…
Stepping inside, he took in the cell, sweeping his gaze around. There was fresh blood on the wrist and ankle shackles. The cat-o-nine tails was tucked neatly on a chair that was positioned next to a partially frozen pail of water. When he saw the cilice, with it’s barbed chains, he cursed. It had been cleanly sliced in two.
Stepping back out, he stormed down the passageway until he found another guard. “You!” He intoned authoritatively. “Where did the prisoner located in that cell get taken?” When the guard didn’t immediately answer, Shin leaned into the higher rank his concealment spell had afforded him. “Lieutenant, if I have to repeat myself, things are going to get real uncomfortable for you…”
“Apologies, Colonel. I just didn’t expect to see you…” Breaking off, he responded curtly. “The prisoner was taken to the healers tunnels.”
“Why?” Shin bit out roughly, tamping down his worry.
“I…I don’t know.”
Spinning on his heel, Shin left the guard and headed toward the healers.

As Shin searched for her, Starr lay immobile on a hard stone slab as the healers and another mage busily tended to her. The healers did their best to heal her injuries while not incurring Torvynaar’s wrath, and the mage swiftly worked to get her magic contained once more.
When she was satisfied it was done and the seals were secure, she stepped to Torvynaar. “You are lucky her magic didn’t kill you!” Kattath snapped, gesturing to the body of the deceased guard. “He was outside the room! And look at him!”
“Ah, your concern for my welfare is touching, Kattath. But as you can see, I’m perfectly fine.” Torvynaar drawled humorously, hiding his annoyance. The spellhowler had always had a tendency to get on his nerves. Luckily for her, she was loyal to Thiefiell and therefore had his favor. If she hadn’t, he would’ve killed her long ago.
“Yes, yes, yes.” Thiefiell waved his hands dismissively before focusing his attention on Kattath. “What happened?”
Turning serious, Kattath chose her words carefully. “To put it simply, her magic, once held in check by the seals, was released. The seals worked much like a dwarven dam on a river. The dam stops the normal flow of the water, and when it is broken, the water rushes uncontrolled over the landscape, destroying everything in it’s path.” She shrugged an elegant shoulder. “Her magic acted much like a river whose dam was broken. It flowed unchecked and, unfortunately, claimed the life of a guard.”
“Why was her magic sealed using our runes?” Thiefiell questioned.
Torvynaar relayed the story that Starr had told him, also informing them of his suspicions that it was false, or at least part of it was. Which part was the question.
Kattath listened intently, trying to keep silent as much as possible. She couldn’t even begin to guess at what the light elf had been attempting when she’d fed Torvynaar that little tale. Her gaze returned to the still unconscious light elf. She needed to get a message to Nathavin regarding the breaking of the seals.
And what had happened as a result. Not only had the guard been killed inadvertently as the magic flowed unchecked throughout the entire area, but Starr herself had almost died. If Torvynaar had knocked her unconscious when he did, her own heart would’ve frozen solid. The healers had found clear evidence that ice crystals had formed in her veins and vital organs, including her heart.
They had thus deemed it necessary to keep her in a trance while she finished healing and had forbidden Torvynaar from questioning her again until she’d recovered. It was clear that a more powerful sealing spell was needed. The next time it broke, the light elf would lose her life.
Soon, everyone had left the elf’s bedside, and Kattath was alone with her. It was hard to believe that Nathavin had placed his trust in her. As she prepared to leave the room, she was surprised to see a knight she’d never seen before stride in and quickly approach the light elf.
Casting a quick spell and knocking him back several steps, she positioned herself between him and Starr. “Who do you think you are to just barge in here?! In Thiefiell’s private healing quarters?!”
In a swift and graceful motion, Shin’s swords flew from their scabbards and sliced through the spell rooting him to the floor. “Do not cross me, Kattath. I’ve a right to see her.”
Casting her spell again, calling upon the spirits to enhance her spells power, she snapped angrily while blocking his path again. “There are only two people aside from myself who have a right to see her, and you are neither!”
Suddenly Shin remembered the spell of concealment. Relaxing his stance and sheathing his swords, he bit out tersely. “Kattath, I was informed that she was taken from the beach and brought here. I’m here to retrieve her.”
Kattath released her spell immediately. Only Shin would know from where she’d been taken. “I don’t know why you look the way you do, nor do I care. Nor do I care how you intend to get her out of here. But I will tell you this: Do not ever again let those seals be broken. Ever. I will send details to Nathavin later.”
Moving around him, she crossed to the doorway. “I will distract them so you can get her out of here. The guards on the southern entrance should be about ready to change shifts. They will be tired and sleepy. That is your best exit.” With that, she was gone.
Shin crossed to Starr and clenched his fists as he took in her various wounds and injuries. “Soko ni iru hazudatta. Karera o tomerubekidatta. Hitori de tachimukau hitsuyō wa nakatta nodesu. Hitori de Torvynaar to taiji suru hitsuyō wa nakatta hazuda. Chikatte iuga, kare no yatta koto no tsumi de kare o korosu.” Leaning down, he pressed a chaste kiss to her forehead as he pressed a concealment scroll into her hand and chanted the spell to activate it.
As the spell washed over her, Starr awoke with a start. Panicking, she began to fight Shin. He’d been ready for this and held her tightly for as he spoke quickly. “Aka misses you. The damn fenrir has been inconsolable since you were taken and hasn’t eaten in weeks.”
As the words registered, Starr sagged in his arms. No one but Shin could’ve known her fenrir’s name. Looking up, she was stunned to see a face she didn’t recognize.
“I don’t have time to explain. Come on, we have to leave, quicky.”
Standing up, she leaned on him for support as her legs were still unsteady. The two made their way to the doorway and darted into the hall and began making their way to the southern entrance.

I should've been there. I should've stopped them. You shouldn't have had to face them on your own. You shouldn't have had to face Torvynaar on your own. I swear to you, I will kill him for what he's done.
