Chapter Three: The Dark Cell
------------------------------------------------------------
Dim just saw his lover fall asleep and so he decided to go for a walk around the camp. Silently sne sneaked out, thinking of his dream, his wish come true, when he somehow fell immediately asleep.
When he awaked, he felt a terrible headache and saw only darkness surrounded him. He said a few words, and touched his right hand, which began to emit light. He was surprised to find himself in some kind of prison. It was a small room, something like twenty square meters, with only one door that had a small window. The room was like a cave, with no escape except the door. When he looked outside, through the small window, darkness was all that he could see. But as he raised the left arm to lighten the benighted space, monstrous voices began shouting, so he quickly lowered his hand and began thinking how to escape. The only thing they left him were his pants and a dirty shirt…
The sun already set and the angelic elf was still searching for further tracks of his comrade’s captors, but couldn’t found any. The footprints finished in the middle of the forest, as if they were transported by magical m, an, and so they were, Settum figured. He then prayed to his god, reaching a state of trance, in which his deity told him what to do…
It was dawn already, and he did not find any secret entrances to the cave he saw at the top of the mountain. He could tell, thanks to his good sight, that there were ten if not more guards, two ogre mages and eight hill giants. He waited in silence, trying to make a good plan, when the good luck turned to him.
A swarm of goblins. Twerewere walking alongside the imprints caused by the ogres before, carrying barrels and bags of food, probably plundered from the villages around there. The celestial observer disguised himself, with magical help, of course, into one of the bandit goblins. He then sneaked into the group and quietly followed the leader.
They walked until they reached a soiled creek, which sprang from the mountain. Then the leader of the filthy creatures touched the wall lighting a ring on his middle finger. Immediately, an entrance showed up.
There was a long, dark and dank tunnel that the raiding party entered, setting fire to a few torches before entering. The path they followed quickly ended in a crossroad where they stopped. The commander said something in a dark tongue and there the group split into two, the main group and three goblins plus their leader.
Here, Settum decided it would be better following the smaller group and he was right to, as he saw the others getting surveyed by orcs and hobgoblins. He followed the four upstairs until he heard strange sounds from the lower story, but just when he was about to go downstairs, he felt a giant hand gripping him and saying something in goblin...
It was an ogre, armored in full-plate and carrying quite good equipment.
// He surely is in charge of a group, better take advantage of it…//
Settum uncovered his disguise and glared at him with such a look that even would make demons tremble and so the giant did, giving the key to the lower levels without even the need to ask. Then he cowered and hid in a dark corner, suffering from terror. The angel then hurried down, finding the prisons soon, guarded only by two orcs. He hid before being discovered and threw two knifes at them, striking precisely in their throats, killing them instantly. He hurried and searched them for any keys, but discovered nothing. It was right before forcing the heavy iron door open that he remembered the key he got from the ogre and it came useful to him, as it unlocked the giant iron door. He was in, but could see nothing apart from total darkness. Not even words were heard and his sword served him as a light source, brightening the corridor that led deeper underground. He hid the corpses of the ugly humanoids and locked the metallic entrance…
Three hours passed from his awakening, and he already changed the subject of his thoughts to the one that realised his dream, rendering them real…
Another hour passed and the ranger began to hear sounds of calling. The source of it was panting and calling one name.
“DIM!”
Now he heard it, someone was calling him, but he thought that it was only his imagination until it called again with a delicate and at the same time commanding voice that only his angelic friend had. And the door opened…
The elf used the key to open the door that was near Dim’s equipment, but as soon as he did that, a figure jumped out of the dark cell and hugged him.
“Sorry. I’m really sorry for making you worry, Settum,” the human immediately said, embracing the angelic figure that just rescued him. His eyes were teary and it looked like he was in a deep depression. The feathery-winged being squeezed his smaller comrade and reassured him: “Don’t worry, it’s all right…”
“I’m glad you are safe,” he said and lowered his head in order to kiss his comrade. Their two lips came together, and the elf began to move his tongue into the other’s mouth. They both hoped that the moment would last forever, but the reality was different; they were both in big trouble…
Sounds of heavy drums rumbled through the cave, awaking them from that magic moment. Settum drew his two bastard swords and hid around the corner, leaving his companion the time to equip himself. The sound occasionally became louder and louder, until it ended. Both warriors were ready, standing one on the left and the other to the right of the room, which haf previously served for imprisoning the human ranger.
The silver-haired one on the left, with both arms holding a bastard sword above his head, prepared to strike the first vicious creature that would come from the entrance to that dank space. His mate was in the same pose, but on the other side, and holding two scimitars ready to strike every single breathing being that would dare to enter that small and dirty cell.
Soon, footsteps could be heard, becoming more frequent and louder every minute that passed, until all stopped, right before the door that led to where the two were.
//There are about twenty or even thirty of them and I also have to protect Dim. Now how could we escape without having to battle all the monstrous forces hidden in this dungeon? How…//
The first two victims fell just as they entered the room, their heads cut off from their bodies and falling in front of the orcish guards. Soon there were twenty heads lying on the ground and another twenty ready to be cut off. The remaining orcs began to panic. They began to scream and fled the narrow battlefield, but not much later they fell silent, and heavy footprints were heard coming that way.
The angel looked at the corridor and saw two trolls, one with a giant steel mace and the other with a large spear, heading their way.
“At my signal, you will flee past the trolls and wait on the other side, okay?” he whispered to his companion, who was ready to take another head off.
“All right,” replied the human, and both jumped out of their safe spot, attracting the attention of their two bigger opponents, making them charge at them. Dim qly tly tumbled in the room, while the first of the enemy’s attacks waved in way.way. Soon both of the green-skinned creatures were at the angel and meant to attack, till the moment Settum unleashed his wings. From his back, two silver-feathered wings sprouted tearing his vest into pieces, but leaving the magical Mithril breastplate intact. At this beautiful sight, the two of them just stood in place, fascinated by the good being that was standing right before them. Dim, on the other hand, saw his wings quite a few times ant ust used to it, so he hadn’t any problems with running past the filthy foes. Whe whe was on the other side, his elven lover made terrible cuts to his adversaries, but knowing that without acid or fire they would regenerate, he ran and fled from the dungeon along with his human mate.
They finally reached the exit without encountering many enemies on their way, but when they were in bright light, they saw something that made them wishy hay hadn’t escaped.
Right before the two of them, there were ten minotaurs, ten hill gia and and four ogre mages waiting for them. The only strategy Settum could think of was making a bluff attempt. Fortunately, he hid his wings inside his body, for it would be a great disadvantage for them if their adversaries knew what he was. Then, looking at the mages, prepared for counterspelling, he got an idea.
“Dim, now cast Endure Elements (Acid) on me and then attack the biggest minotaur. That one with the red horns…” he silently ordered to the ranger.
The other wasn’t so sure about that, so he objected: “But you are already immune to that element, why would you want to…”
“It’s a bluffing attempt. Don’t you see that the mages are ready to dispel every spell on me, so they would think that acid is my weak point. At this point, you must be fro from me and if you attack the leader of the bullheads, you won’t be disturbed by the others…” interrupted Settum and he cast a protection spell on himself, followed by the chanting of his comrade. He just finished, when it was identified by one of the intelligent ogres and dispelled immediately after. His friend’s Endure Elements spell came after, targeted again on him. And the other was countered, too. The mages began to discuss between themselves, leaving to the ranger the opportunity to leap forward, attacking and damaging the red-horned leader. But he didn’t want the others to interfere, and fought back with his mighty axe. The human opponent used just the opposite tactic. He defended with one scimitar and attacked with the other rather than only attacking and then trying uselessly to dodge the enemy hits as the minotaur did. It proved to be a better use of his skills and soon prevailed.
Meanwhile, terrible clouds were evoknd and acid rained from them. Acidballs were casted and Acid arrows thrown at the angel. A giant cloud of dust and fog was summoned, completely concealing the bastard sword wielder. They continued until they consumed almost all of their mental energies.
The human ranger continued the attack. After defeating the minotaur, he concentrated his hits at the blue-skinned hill giant, who also backed off and perished below the blows of the brownish green-eyed attacker. The swings that followed almost always hit, but he was in a bad tactical position now, being surrounded by minotaurs and hill giants…
The cloud of soiled fog cleared up, Settum unleashed his wings again and flew to the five spellcasters. As they realized that they had used almost all of their energies in useless attacks, they were already dead meat. Not even thinking about clearing the filthy blood of the soulless beings off, Settum helped his friend, but finding him already deadly wounded at the time, he ended the slaughter. The last words he could hear from his beloved one were, “I’m really happy to die in your hands, thank… you…”
