Chapter Three
{Sebastian}
Sebastian winced as he entered the corridor. The dungeon was dark and lit only with a few failing candles and the odd torch placed here and there.
His Lord had called on him once again. He had not said what it was he wanted, but Sebastian had a sinking feeling that he already knew. He continued to walk forwards, catching a glimpse of his Lord; the golden armour glinted in the dull light almost as if winking at him.
The room he followed his Lord into was small, and dank. The smell of burning flesh filled the air. A cold, dry skinned hand closed around his chin and tilted his head upwards and to the side. Sebastian closed his eyes as arid cracked lips closed over his roughly, forcing his mouth open and forcing a dry leathery tongue inside him. He couldn’t help but whimper as he was walked harshly backwards until he collided with one of the stone walls of the room. Golden armour bit against his face and scraped along his own ebony armour. He was thankful for the armour even as a hand reached to unclasp it.
Slowly, fear reared its ugly head, and Sebastian suddenly felt like he had a small army of glass winged butterflies in his stomach. He swallowed a whimper. He didn’t want this, he didn’t want to be touched by that thing, but if it was going to happen and realistically Sebastian had no way of stopping it, he did not want it to happen down here in the dank and foul smelling dungeons.
He opened his mouth as his Lord drew back. He would beg his Lord, please, if they must do this, please, could it be done else where? But before words escaped him, he why why he was really here. The room was built to torture and kill vampires. The walls were littered with tools that would bring forth pain, but hopefully stave off death. In the middle of the room was a shallow dip, a pool. Manacles were hooked into the floor to hold prisoners down, keeping them in the shallow water. That was too shallow to bring true death, but deep enough to bring blinding agony.
Sebastian swallowed; the pale and naked creature that was tied down was cured in on itself as much as the manacles would allow. His eyes were bright with awareness and blood. His body was scoured scraped raw to the nerve and at the sharpest points of his form - hips, elbows, knees - the blue white of bone could be seen. The water hadsed sed angry chemical burns and at a few places - stomach, thighs, chest - someone had slashed him open with a sword. A wet bubble of intestine could be seen along with muscle and bone.
Sebastian stopped himself from breathing.
It would be dawn before this creature would be allowed to die.
{Industrial quarter}
Never before had he been so happy to hear the menial talk of the workers, smell the oil and see the machinery. Come to think of it, in fact, never before had the industrial quarter felt like home, not the way the mansion had. The mansion had always felt safe, like a small hole set out of time where no one could ever touch you unless you went to them.
A small relieved sigh escaped him as he wandered the reassuring dark grey corridors of the quarter.
He did not know the real reason his Lord had shown him the tortured creature, but a small nagging voice in the back of his mind was constantly telling him that his Lord knew how he still loved his previous Lord and how he wanted to kill him so that his present Lord would never get his hands on him. His present Lord was showing him what would happen to Kain should he get his hands on him. It was an incentive.
He had to admit it was working.
The mere thought of seeing his once proud Lord reduced to so much . . . pulp, d had have been the final circle of hell. He shuddered, remembering the last words his golden armoured Lord had spoken to him before he had been allowed to leave.
“I’ll make you watch”
He shuddered, unable to stop himself. A dull sensation was beginning to grow in him; it was . . . a form of nothing he was becoming empty. He was becoming a hollow creature. He shook his head violently, trying to shake the idea and sensation away. He did not want to become a thoughtless, emotionless doll, he did not want to be hollow. A strangled sob worked its way up his throat, but it was swallowed before it became vocalised.
He often cursed the agony he went through on a daily basis, the guilt of his betrayal, the fear of his new Lord, the soul crushing depression. But at least it was something. If there was nothing, then he really might as well not be alive at all. He needed the pain to remind him that he still had a soul.
The human almost collided with him, had he not stepped delicately to the side; but this way the human just collided with the wall. The usual glee of a human’s suffering did not rise in Sebastian as he watched the human gently touch his now broke nose.
“My Lord,” the human bowed dripping blood onto the stone floor.
No blood hunger touched Sebastian. He was hollow. “Yes,” he snapped, “what is it?”
“I bring the news you requested, my Lord,” the hustutstuttered. “The Serefan mansion has beeniltriltrated, many were slaughtered and . . .”
“Out with it, mortal,” Sebastian snapped.
“My Lord, your brother Marcus has been nobly defeated in battle at the cathedral.”
Nothing. He felt absolutely nothing, no sadness, no fear nothing. He truly was becoming hollow.
Marcus, his brother, was gone along with Faustus and Magnus.
Sebastian nodded to the human and continued walking. No one had seen Magnus die, but after two hundred years without even catching his older brother’s scent Sebastian knew he was dead. Sebastian turned into a thinner, slightly hidden corridor, walking towards his rooms at the quarter. Closing the rusty door behind him he allowed himself to sink ungracefully to the stone floor.
It was strange really, all the time he had been a vampire Magnus had been his closest friend, his true brother; they had understood each other almost perfectly. Yet at the end he had hated Magnus with a rage so fiery he doubted hell itself could be hotter.
Ironic that the fact they had similar tastes should be their undoing.
While he sang the praises of his previous Lord’s arrival in the mansion, he cursed it as well, as it was him, however unintentionally, who tore Magnus and Sebastian apart. Sebastian cursed himself. He should have known, he saw it coming a mile away but had chosen to ignore it. He should have paid more attention.
He stood and stumbled over to the bed, where he allowed himself to fall, curling up on his side, not bothering to remove his cape or armour. He couldn’t bare to. His armour had protected him from more than just spears.
Rolling over onto his back, he stared at the ceiling, watching a growing damp spot, wondering briefly if he should move his bed. But being too drained to, he allowed himself to fall asl
The smaller of the two libraries was dark, lit only by a few candles dotted about the room and a larger one beside the chair. Strange shadows shifted and flitted across the floor. The velvet drapes covering some of the shelves appeared dark and thick the dark wood floor seemed like syrup. The dominate colours of the room were dark blood red, gold and a few areas of purple andp blp blue, all in all it was like sitting inside a human. A great dark womb.
Kain sat curled in a voluminous leather chair. It was obvious at one point he had been dozing as someone had placed a pale blanket over him, and it now pooled around his waist and covered his legs. A heavy looking book rested in his lap, the title obscured by the blanket and partly worn away by time. Sebastian fancied it was a magic book, telling of the secret movement of the power that Sebastian knew Kain held within him.
He appeared as a silver white spectre; awash in the dull warm light of the candles his flesh seemed luminous in the light.
“You should sleep,” he muttered, approaching until he stood in front of the chair. “You may be immortal, but you are not invulnerable.”
“You sound like an old mother.” Kain raised his eyes to meet Sebastian’s before turning his eyes back to the book.
“Someone’s got to take care of you,” Sebastian thought, jerking suddenly as he realised he’d said the words aloud. He slowly looked back to Kain, who had raised an almost invisible ashen eyebrow.
“And you would . . . take care of me,” Kain’s voice was a deep rumbling sound that sent shivers through Sebastian’s spine.
“I . . . I didn’t mean . . . what I meant was...” he stuttered hopelessly, not knowing what to say.
Kain smirked before looking back to his book. Sebastian felt his shoulders dip. How on Nosgoth was he meant to voice how he felt when he wasn’t even sure of it himself? He wanted to rage with frustration, shout, yell, bang his head on a wall, anything, just to get his thoughts straight in his own mind.
Magnus smiled as he entered the small library, walking proudly over te twe two and settling himself opposite from them.
“You should sleep at some point, you realise,” he smirked. Kain rolled his eyes. “You know I’m right,” Magnus’ voice had a sing-song quality to it.
The book was closed with a sharp sound.
“Fine, I give up.” Pale hands were raised in defeat. “I surrender.”
“No one can resist my charm.” Magnus winked, and Sebastian felt a tiny thread of anger bite at him as his brother did that.
He watched as Kain stood, letting the blanket pool back on the leather chair. He lifted the book.
“You’re planning on reading in your room, aren’t you,” Magnus sighed overdramatically. “Does this mean I have to tie you to the bed?” His smirk returned, “I wouldn’t mind.”
“Stop fishing for excuses.” Kain shook his head and sighed.
“Since when have I ever needed an excuse?” Magnus’ smirk became a wide smile.
“Go away, Magnus,” Kain muttered good-naturedly and retreated from the library, leaving the two brothers alone.
Sebastian had bitten the insides of his mouth and now tasted blood. Part of him was raging at his brother, the other part envied him. How he made it seem so easy to get his wants and intentions out while making it banter. Sebastian unclenched his jaw and sighed.
Magnus smiled to him before yawning widely, muttering something about the coming of dawn and retreating. Sebastian nodded as his brother left and turned to make his way towards his own rooms.
The corridors were rich red like the small library, but lacked the feeling of being inside someone, safe and protected. There was something colder and slightly more impersonal about the wealth that covered them, and the other main rooms. Sebastian smiled a little; he knew nearly everyone preferred the slightly smaller and less grand rooms simply because they felt more like home than the grand entrance chambers and the main library.
“What was it you were trying to say in the library?”
Sebastian jumped, yelping loudly before an alabaster hand closed over his mouth, effectively shutting him up. He struggled, making as much noise as was possible through the strong grip that now held him. The grip let go and instantly Sebastian fell into a defensive stance and turned to meet his attacker.
“Calm down, anyone would think I was trying to murder you.” Pale hands ran through paler bone coloured hair.
“Don’t do that.” Sebastian relaxed, taking a deep breath before saying, “what was it you wanted?”
“I asked you what it was you were trying to say in the library.” Kain smirked and Sebastian’s stomach fell like a rock. There was something in Kain’s _expression that said loud and clear that he already knew what Sebastian was having such a hard time figuring out.
Sebastian swallowed and tried to decipher the look in his Lord’s face. Was he angry? Was he happy? Or was he just trying to make Sebastian seem foolish?
“You already know, don’t you,” Sebastian muttered giving up.
“I might”
“Well . . . uh . . . I meant...” he struggled and hated himself for appearing imprudent and dim witted.
“You seem to be having trouble with your words.” Kain’s smirk widened. Sebastian wondered briefly if he could actually smile properly and not smirk. “Perhaps I will be kind and aid you.”
Before Sebastian had time to process the words, ebony lip closed over his own.
