Link left the 'study' more than half an hour later, his head spinning with all of the information that he had to process. What he really wanted to do was lie down somewhere and sleep off some of the confusion. However, that wasn't an option, the princess wanted them to leave as soon as the moon was up. She had been kind enough to offer him a room within the palace until then, but he had decided it best not to take her up on the offer. After all why would a mere soldier warrent a room within the castle walls? Best let anyone trying to keep an eye on him, think that he was taking a room down in the town. He didn't need nor want that kind of attention, especially if he was carrying out orders that the King didn't officially know about or approve of.
And to follow that sentiment Link headed out of the castle, through the grounds and out the gates. He'd pick up his supplies within town as well, instead of purloining them from the castle armory supplier, like Zelda had suggested. This way as well, it would look as if he were preparing to head out on some business of his own, instead of arousing any suspicion. The town blacksmith did just a good of a job as the one within the castle walls, and Link had a sneaking suspicion that the food and rations he bought in town would probably taste far better than anything the army had in supply. And if he was lucky, along the way he'd pick-up some gossip from the locals too.Funny thing gossip, it wasn't always reliable, but more often than not it held a great deal more information than any official report, and would more likely pick up on some of the more negative happenings; that the higher ups either didn't want to hear or were trying to gloss over. Yes, a funny mistress gossip was, and more than a few times now, she had saved his ass.Sheik was standing just inside of the stables, waiting for his newly assigned partner to show. It was about three marks past sunset and the moon was just beginning to peak over the mountains. It was almost time to depart.
Sheik shifted restlessly; he alwasy felt this way before a mission. Neither nervous nor excited, simply restless; he wanted to act and he wanted to act now. Once he was on the way to accomplishing his goal he would settle down and focus, but until then he would be full of this restless energy, that nearly drove him to distaction. Only years of training and missions stopped him from plunging headlong into something before it was time.Sheik turned into the stables to examine his horse for the third time in an hour. Not that you could really call the beast a horse; more like 'tired out old mule' if Sheik was any judge. Never mind the fact that in actuality it really was a horse. The poor bag of bones sagged from front to back and the young Sheikah was amazed that it hadn't collapsed under the weight of the his two saddlebags. The horse was lucky that he was a light traveller. Sheik knew he should be insulted at the state of tthe worn out beast; hoewever, he knew for a fact that this old geezer was the only beast available for him. theonly one that he could take without raising more suspicion than necessary. All of the other horseflesh was assigned to the high ranking soldiers and commanders stationed at the castle; and any one of them would raise hue and cry if their horse went missing in the middle of the night. And none too few within the castle staff would notice that Sheik had gone missing the same night as so-and-so's prize thoroughbred. And unfortunatly for the Sheikah, not everyone trusted their race the same way the royal family did. Oh no, there would be far too many ready to place the blame on him nevermind the fact that he was on royal order. The whole mess would be more trouble than it was worth and half the point of taking the old cob was to avoid as much notice of his departure as possible.Light but cautious footsteps drew Sheik's attention away from his mount. Instinctively he melted into the shadows of the stables, even if the stables weren't out of bounds he didn't want to be seen outside of the palace. He was to give the people as little to talk about as he could."Sheik?" came the tentative whisper of Link. "Are you here??"The bandage clad teen stepped silently into the lantern light. He tried not to feel too dissapointed when the other young man didn't jump... What, had he known the Sheikah was there? Link walked into the stbles and scratced the old horse behind the ears. He smiled shyly."We won't need this old fellow, Impa told me you might not be able to get a hold of a very good horse, so I took a look around town for you."Sheik raised an inquisitive eyebrow and made to pulle the saddlebags off."There was a sweet, little old lady down in town who wanted to send a wedding present to her son down in the Hyrule Lake area. It just happened to be a horse and he just happens to serve at the outpost we're supposed to stop at. So I offered to escort the beast for her." He grinned a little more fully and pulled the saddle and blanket off the old horse, handing them to Sheik."Keep that," he explained, leading the horse into his stall. "The woman didn't have a saddle and we'll probably need one once we get down there anyways."Sheik nodded and gathered his saddlbags and the saddle in the blanket making a make-shift pack of the whole mess, and heafted it over his shoulder. When Link walked back into the lantern light he had the harness and bit in his hands, he motioned for Sheik to procceed him and followed the other young man out and into the night.Quite quickly they were out of the castle grounds and walking towards Castle Town, before they neared the first house, however, Link stopped. He started digging around in the pack that was hidden underneath his shield. When he emerged, in his hands he had a short cloak with a deep hood.
"Here," he said handing it to the Sheikah. "Put this on, I know you'd probably rather not, but your armour is rather distinct. And if we're gonna pull this off then we can't have the entire town gossiping about the Sheikah that they saw prowling around last night."He grinned nervously and waited for the other young man to either accept this or argue against it. He almost let a sigh of relief out when after a couple of seconds the Sheikah took the cloak. He was rather shocked, however when the young man reached up to his face and began removing his mask. Sheik paused for a second noting that the more his mask revealed the wider the other's eyes got."What?" He snapped, he wasn't that ugly was he??Link blushed, "Nothing, I just didn't think you'd take off your mask."Sheik's eyes narrowed. "Why not?""Because, I thought that the Sheikah didn't normally reveal their faces.....""Well if it's going to interfere with the mission why wouldn't I?"Link looked down at the ground and scratched his cheek sheepishly, "I suppose."The Sheikah gave Link a suspicious look and pulled the cloak on. He removed his turban and stashed that and the mask in his makeshift pack. Once he had the hood adjusted to his liking he readjusted the pack and nodded to his silent watcher. "Shall we?""... Oh, uh yeah..." Link stammered and blushed even deeper, good thing it was dark, he noted dully. He turned and headed off into Castle Town.He had been staring and he knew it, and hadn't been able to stop himself either. The differences between this Sheik with him here, and Zelda were blatant and obvious. When the Sheikah had removed his mask he'd been half expecting it to be the princess beneath the mask, so he'd been a little relieved and a little confused when it had turned out to be someoen entirely different. Relieved because it meant he wouldn't be on guard and worrying about Zelda through the entire 'mission'. And confused, for some reason that he couldn't explain, that had probably been the part of him that had expected it to be her. But there was no mistaking the two now that Shiek's face had been revealed, Sheik's face was sharper and more defined while the princess' was softer and entirely more feminine. Their eyes were different shapes, something that was completely apparent now that Sheik did't have all of that hair in the way, covering and skewing one's perception. And there was no way for the princess to copy the thin scar that ran from the Sheikah's right upper-lip to just under his sharp nose (unless she was to give herself one, and somehow he couldn't see Zelda doing that). No, before he'd left Zelda had explained before he'd left, that Sheik was in all planes his own person here, she hadn't explained to him how that was possible (she'd said that, that was something the Sheikah himself would have to explain once and if he recovered his memories), but now he had the undenaible proof that it was so. Somehow this made everything easier and harder at the same time, since Sheik was his own person, it meant that he wouldn't have to feign being perfect strangers, because they really were. And yet that was exactly how it made everything so much harder, it meant that he wouldn't know what to expect from the other young man and he wouldn't know what his new partner could and could not do.Oh well, he thought, leading the way into town. That's, atleast, a problem I can deal with directly.Sheik glared at Link's back as he followed the other man into town. What exactly was this guy's problem? When he'd shown his face, he'd looked at him like he was some sort of ghost or unbelievable spectre or something. It wasn't like he was the only Sheikah ever to remove his mask... But then maybe that was the problem, from what he'd read of this man's report, he'd spent alot of time in the south and east, even a bit of time with the Gerudo in the west, maybe he'd never seen a Sheikah before. That would explain a bit, Sheik knew that most of the legends portraying the Sheikah race said they were mysterious at best and coldblooded assasins at worst. It could have been that the other man had heard something of these and drawn his conclusions from this... which meant Sheik would spend a good deal of the first part of their trip dispelling lies and finding out how much and how little this young man knew. The Sheikah let out a sigh and followed along behind, the sway of Link's hat catching his eye. He watched it for a couple of minutes, hypnotised by the motion of it. However when he blinked and tried to refocus his eyes he found everything blurry, and very bright. Link's green tunic and hat had become a deep red. His shield reflected the heat, light, magma and black rocks of the volcano as he walked away from the Sheikah, and his sword looked new, the base and grip had a different lighter colour and it seemed to almost glow. For a second and a half the air was thick with heat and ash flew through the space between them, below them Sheik could hear the bubbling and cracking of the magma beneath them as it moved, cooled and remelted.Sheik gasped, what was going on here??You're supposed to be here, remember... A voice in his head whispered. As if on cue, Link tured to face the Sheikah, his eyes were different. Wary, and a little cold, they had a glint in them that Sheik had seen in many young warriors, the look of one about to go into battle. Sheik closed his eyes, trying to rid himself of the haunting image. And then just as fast as it had appeared, the scene was gone. The night returned, the air was cool again and the only noise to be heard was the wind blowing gently and a dog barking off somewhere in the distance. Link was giving him a concerned look."Hey, are you coming?" He asked, trying not to sound worried, but the concern was still heard at the edge of his voice."Yes," the Sheikah replied tersely. "Let's go."Link fought the urge to raise an eyebrow at the abrupt tone, but didn't. He turned and began walking again, ignoring the urge to ask further questions. If the bandage clad teen didn't want to talk about it then he wouldn't ask. But if it happened again, he knew that he'd have to ask, it was against his nature not to be curious, he'd let it drop for now though.Sheik growled under his breath, but beneath the frustration he hid worry. He wasn't going mad...
