Quite a bit later, she still hadn’t come out of the room yet, making him a little bit...worried. He put his hand against the door, but he didn’t dare to open it.
"Dante? What is it...?"
He did a double take. She was standing right at the door too!? Jeez, that woman’s ‘sixth sense’ or whatever it was called was pretty damn sharp. No, her voice sounded like she was sitting, with her back against the door; trying to keep him from coming in, perhaps (not that it could stop him anyway) after all that mess."...You okay?" he asked, cringing as he realized his question was so stupid after what he almost did.
There was quite a pause before she answered. "...I’m fine, thank you" she muttered, sarcasm border-lining.
"I hate it when she does that..." he thought. "Tess...hey, hear me out, will ya? Look, I... I dunno what the hell came over me! I screwed up, and I’m...I’m sorry...? ...Come on, you know me. I’m...not too good at this stuff."
She didn’t reply right away, just sighed. He apologized! Him! For Dante to say ‘I’m sorry’ meant swallowing down a big part of his pride, and that was a lot. He couldn’t be lying, he was sorry and he meant it. Of course she was impressed and appreciated his initiative and honesty, but she was still stuck with her dilemma. On one hand, her affection for him was eating away at her. She was starting to bend. But on the other hand…she knew him too well and it made her doubt him. What should she expect from him? It had nothing to do with his demon origin—she was way past that already. It was more of what to expect in dealing with him from now on. She didn’t want to toss her dignity by getting involved in what could be another dead-end relationship, nor did she want to upset him and ruin that nice (if a little odd sometimes) friendship they had. She didn’t know what to do.She breathed out and leaning her elbows against her folded knees, brought her hands to her face. She sounded exasperated when she talked. "...I can’t just...it isn’t simple. I-I need...I’m sorry Dante; I just need some time to myself, please. I really can’t face you right now…"
"Aw damn… she’s been crying..." he thought, his fist tightening in spite of himself. "I should just tell her the truth and stop this stupid game... No, that’s way too rash; she’d never trust me after this.""...Just let me be..."
"Tess--"The phone on the floor below rang sharply. He glowered at the sound of it and for once was about to just ignore it.
"Just go. The call is serious. We can talk later...” she said.
"Hey, I don’t--"
Dante, please..." she nearly begged him. She needed some time alone to clear her head and put her thoughts in order. Sometimes she envied him, how things like these didn’t make him lose his head like they did to her.He nearly bellowed against the door in defeat. "...Sure."
"Thank you..."He left the door with a quick, frustrated pace and was by the desk in less than a minute. He smacked his fist against the desk’s surface and the receiver bounced up./p"Devil May Cry... Hey, slow down. You got the pass? Okay...what, just two? Oh, the big kind... Yeah, I got you..." he muttered in the phone, making a quick scribble of the address. "Uh, I dunno, go find a hole and hide in, I guess?"
He hung up, annoyed. Two Hell Vanguards. Those things always had the worse timing! He grabbed his coat from the rack on the wall and armed his guns, holstering them on his sides, before he reached for his sword, twirled it once, and sheathed it."Hey, how’d you know it was serious?"
She was standing at the top of the stairs now, out of his direct sight, but he knew she was there.
Woman’s intuition..." she replied.
He tried to resist it, but he looked back at her before he stepped out of the door, turning just enough to see the look on her face. She was standing at the top of the stairs, one hand against the wall, looking directly down at him. She blushed when she realized he was looking back, but maintained her composure."Give me a sign, Tess; was it for nothing that I let myself stoop like that? Do you even understand me?" he thought to himself.
"...Go kick some ass..." she said, and her lips moved in a tiny smile, her look expressing more. I’m forgiving you--for now...
He smiled slightly at that look, unaware of his own gratefulness to see it. "You said it, sweetheart" he replied, walking out with a small grin. So she forgave him, but he knew he still had to watch his step with her from now on. The worst problem with her was that sometimes it was too hard to tell what was going on in her head.It was still raining cats and dogs when he got back, really late at night, almost 2 to 3 o’ clock past midnight. He came in the office soaked and dripping, but otherwise, quite satisfied. The hunt had been good, the marks were amusing, to the least, and the client a generous payer, probably because he was so glad to have saved his skin. He absently flicked on the lights, and paced to his desk, while taking off his soaking trenchcoat. He had awakened Roy too, who was curled like a gray, fuzzy cushion, in a corner of the busted sofa."Mmmph..." the gray tabby growled groggy; he stretched himself lavishly like cats always seem to do. "Welcome back. Don’t you look pleased with yourself."
The cat looked at the bathroom door, and the door suddenly swung open quietly and a dry towel hovered out of it, slapping on the desk right as Dante took his guns’ holster off."Huh… thanks" Dante muttered, picking it up to dry his head off.
He’d never figure Roy out. Although he could effortlessly maintain a human form (albeit one-eyed) he seemed to prefer hanging around mostly as a cat. For all the time he’d known Tess and Roy, Dante was sure he’d probably never get used to talking to a cat with a British lisp.
"Eh, well, since I’m up..." the familiar replied, bored. "Tess had a rough day, she’s asleep" he added, catching up with the upcoming question.
Dante frowned, turning away in case he actually looked disappointed in front of the familiar. "Mmmh..."
The familiar didn’t beat about the bush at all.
"I’m getting too old to meddle into whatever shenanigans you two are up to again, but you’d better watch what you’re doing. I asked her where you were earlier and she frowned so bad when she heard your name... ooough, singed my fur" Roy cackled, hopping off the sofa lightly. "She... ah, made you something though; it’s in the kitchen... I’ll be leaving you two for the weekend, I need a break, and I don’t want to be around when this whole, whatever it is you’re planning, goes off."
"Is it that obvious?" Dante smirked, draping the towel over his shoulders, as the cat made for the door."To me it is, but then again I’ve seen this kind of stuff going on for... oh, just four centuries. Do as you please, my fiendish friend, just try not to irritate her too much or the Vezuvius might pale in comparison to what she’d drop on you. Not to mention that I’ll have to come and beat you around as well, though I know its probably going to hurt me too..." he said coldly. "I’ll have to try anyway... Well, have fun you two, and if she asks where I’ve gone, you haven’t seen me..." the cat purred smoothly, as the door opened for him in the rainy night, then shut behind him quietly.
Dante smirked, in spite of himself. "I should give that damn cat more credit..."
That sleazy old fuzz-ball! He’d seen right through him, after the whole incident with Tess, at the doorstep. And he was acting like it wasn’t his business, and hightailed it out of there. He couldn’t help a smirk, now he had the whole place and Tess to himself, alone. That would be a lot of fun. He kept smirking softly when he went into the kitchen, curious to see what Tess had made. And there it was: a plate on the table, covered with foil carefully, and a post-it left on it. He lifted the foil; spaghetti with a highly appetizing-looking sauce.Just in case you come back hungry. You need a break from all that trashy pizza and I needed to make up to you for being a bit of an irritated shrew earlier. I’m sorry about that. Thanks for giving me some time to think; I needed it. See you in the morning.
T.
He just had to grin at that note. Oh yes, he was starving indeed and this looked very, very good. "Thanks Tess, I’ll take the offer..." he muttered, but it didn’t change his mind about his plans for the next morning. In fact, it made him to just look forward to it more.
Oddly enough, while he ate the food, he got to some thinking. "I don't know if it was just my goof earlier, but I think something’s bugging her."Couldn’t be that she didn’t want him, her eyes and her response, her reactions to him practically screamed that she did, but she also was kind of...undecided?"What's there to think about, dammit? She either digs me or she doesn't, end of story--"
He stopped mid-thought. "...D’uh, who am I kidding?" he muttered to his reflection in the window’s glass. "She knows me, dammit, she knows I suck at... at being hooked. Or whatever. What is it then, commitment--no, I know her feelings on that particular subject. Ugh... what is it with that woman, dammit... Unless... huh... that could be it. What, does she think I just want a fling, a night of good sex...?"He stared blankly ahead of him for a few moments, not realizing how unlike himself he looked for a second, before he snapped out of it. It was just that the particular thought had sunk in. For a moment he asked himself if he did want just a fling, or...
He lingered in thought. "Fuck... I don't want to end up being a jerk again, not with her. We made it through too much crap in the past, life and death crap, the two of us, and I'm going to give her hell? No way. Heck, I can at least try to be decent for her. If it doesn't work..."
Tess rolled on her back under the blanket, yawning slightly and stretching. Light came to her face from the window. She didn't quite want to wake up yet, feeling very comfortably warm and snug in the bed. She was just about to wait to doze off again when she felt like someone was in the room with her. Expecting the worse she sat up abruptly, letting the blanket slide off her.
Surely enough, there was Dante, in just his pants, sitting on the edge of the bed right beside her, his elbows on his knees and his chin resting in one hand.
" 'Morning, sunshine" he said, a playful smile spreading on his face.
He eyed her up carefully, and smirked, biting back the urge to laugh. She had bed-hair, the red locks disheveled and sticking up and around untidily, her look surprised and puffy, and looking very much like 'not a morning person' in the shirt she slept in. For some reason it looked like it was at least two sizes larger than her normal clothes did. She looked...cute.
The whole scene finally clicked in and shocked her into properly waking up."What are you doing in my room!?" she almost shrieked, very indignant, and pulled away from him, yanking the blanket up to her nose almost. Of course, she wasn't naked, but that look of his...well it made her feel like she was!!
"Technically it’s in my house, still. But I just came in to see if you woke up" he said, looking totally innocent--sort of.
She just stared at him in shock, before noticing where he was staring at pointedly. Yanking the blanket like that and moving had caused it to slip over one of her legs leaving it bare up to the thigh, and she angrily pulled the blanket over it in a dignified fashion when she caught him staring.
She tried to look...ferocious in an attempt to drive him out, but it wasn’t working with her face red all over from embarrassment...or with her inability to stop herself from staring at his naked chest. Why did he have to walk around shirtless? He gave her the sudden, crazy urge to run her hands all over him...
"No!! Bad Tess!!" she thought frantically, doing her best to keep her face cool, but it just resulted in her blushing harder. "Ugh, God I must totally look like a school-girl...""You are impossible!” she said. "What do you think you're doing?! Do you make a habit of sneaking into girls' rooms when they're sleeping!?""Nah, just yours" he teased. "You know, I was wondering whether you slept in pajamas or a nightgown. But a t-shirt and panties? I like your style choice."She just let an indignant, slightly repulsed squeak, and pulled back from him again. "Get out!!" she hissed.
"Make me" he retorted, that taunting smirk of his appearing on his face. A morning tussle with her would be fun. It didn't make sense, but he liked that particular, frustrated and embarassed look on her face, like an indignant cat.
God, did she glare! He winced slightly at that look, and tried not to smirk. Ouch. If looks could kill, he’d be nothing but a stain on the floor right now.
"I’ll make you alright!!" she hissed and pulling her pillow, stood on the bed on her knees and swung it at him, holding onto its end tightly. Funny enough, she was...smirking.
Dante just laughed, and grabbed the pillow before it hit his face, holding onto the end and tugging at it lightly, making her frown at the tug-o-war between them. Tess growled at him and was surprised to hear him growl back and smirk in a sly manner. Her surprise allowed him to yank the pillow and make her fall forward and onto him with a small yelp. She nearly went off the bed. Quickly he let go of the pillow and wrapped his arms around her back and waist possessively, pressing her onto his naked chest, their faces so close their noses were almost touching.
Tess stared up at him almost terrified. "Oh God, what's he up to this time!?"He just stared back into her eyes with a wolfish, soft smile. "Haha, when I catch her off guard like this, she’s so impossibly cute" he thought, mischievously lowering his face closer to hers, as if he was going to kiss her. Instead, he stopped just before their lips touched."...Do you want some morning coffee?" he said softly.
Tess just stared back, baffled. Coffee? He was just about to kiss her, and he asked about coffee?! What the heck was going on, what was he up to? Because, yes, this could only be one of his antics--whatever it was. But she was too stunned and dumbstruck by his eyes and smile to snap back.
"Er... uh, yes..." she just blurted, completely taken by surprise.
"Perfect. I'll steal a morning treat then go make some for you too."
"...Treat?"
No sooner had she asked, than he very boldly kissed her, softly at first, but then it got more...fervent. Their tongues touched and he coaxed hers to a brief dance. The irritating part was that, as she had first raised her arms to break the potential fall when he pulled her on him; her arms were left folded against his chest when he hugged her, and now she couldn’t move them. At least this time she wasn’t pinned against a wall, and he wasn't acting like crazed... In fact he was gentle, though not leaving her any room for arguments. His hands started to roam, slightly. One hand slid along the small of her back and stopped right up the rim of the shirt, the other roamed up, gently stroking the back of her neck and rubbing his thumb against her cheek softly. Soon his lips veered to the side, along her jaw-line."You were waiting for an opportunity to do this, weren’t you!?" she bellowed, suppressing a guilty sigh.
"Hehe, you give me a lot of chances..." he muttered, nibbling at her earlobe softly, just with his lips really.
"Whoa--stop that!" she protested, pulling back, surprised and blushing hard.
"Why, you seem to like it.""I--!" she gasped. "Oh, cut that out! I already told you--""That was yesterday, and its history now... oh, and you take your coffee with 2 sugars, right?"
"...right" she said, baffled again.
He stamped another kiss on her lips and then he was gone before she could raise her protests. Tess fell backwards on the bed again on her butt, slightly baffled with her shirt rumpled up in front where he had pressed her against him, and her mouth half open—very obviously kissed. She stared at the door after he went through it, for several stunned minutes, before snapping out of it. She frowned terribly and glared at the door, frustrated with both his lack of shame, and how she let him startle her like that and so blatantly make out with her!
"If I don’t burn his ass by midday, it’ll be a miracle of self-composure..." she thought then realized she had pictured his backside--literally. She blushed at herself and shook her head vigorously, jumping out of bed.
"I. Am. Going. Insane!" she bellowed, stamping her feet on the floor as she seized a pair of jeans and a sweater and began putting them on angrily. He could prance around naked if he pleased, she thought, but she was going to keep herself covered.
"...There I go again!" she moaned, exasperated at her thoughts. "I’m not gonna lie, he’s damn handsome, but--but I’m better than that! I don’t care. Not one single bit!!" she thought, more confident.
This of course, backfired when she went to the kitchen to get some coffee and confront him. Dante was standing right in front of the coffee machine, his back in plain view. She did a double take at the blatant show-off, and pondered what feeling was more prevalent: the desire to run her hands down those tempting muscles, or the desire to break a chair over his arrogant head...
"Coffee’s ready" he said innocently.
"Dante, knock this act out, I’m not stupid!" she said, stamping her bare foot on the floor.
"I never said--woops..." he turned around and for a moment he looked surprised at how very much warlike and ready to start a proper fight with him she looked. "What’s your problem, first thing in the morning?"
"God, he asks!" she bellowed "My problem, dear Dante, is you!!""Aw come on, what’d I do?"Tess shut her eyes and let a small but quite ferocious bellow. "Don’t you act innocent with me; you know perfectly fine what I’m talking about!!"
He really needed all his self-discipline not to start chuckling in her face with her expression. He couldn’t help it, she looked so angry at the whole thing that it was just ridiculous. She seemed as angry with him for his advances as she was with herself for falling for them. She was so serious about it that it was almost silly and cute. One thing he always liked about her was that thing she had that a lot of women lacked: The nerve to get in his face without particularly annoying him, with extra points for doing so while knowing he was a half-demon and having seen the worst of his moods. That kind of laugh in the face of danger was so as distinctive of her as it was for him that it made them birds of a feather.
"Well, no I’m afraid I missed you there" he said dryly. "What have I been doing? Besides getting carried away yesterday like I did, that was a blunder, I said I was sorry and it’s done and over with."
"It wasn’t just a blunder, Dante!! And--and yes, you did, and I’m happy you did but that was still just the peak of the iceberg! You’ve been checking me out, you’ve been teasing me, and you’ve been provoking me like that since the day I set foot here!!"
"Like what?"
"Like this!" she insisted, gesturing at his bare chest. "Think I don’t realize you are? What do you take me for, really?! Do you think I don’t notice you? That what you do doesn't affect me?! For pity's sake, stop this already! I do notice, alright?!" she blurted. He bit back a smirk. It worked! Alright, maybe he didn’t want her to do so in this kind of manner, but at least she finally admitted to it. He smiled a little...flirtatiously at her. "Aah, so you like this, huh? Can't see why you’re complaining then."
She kept glaring at him "It's not funny!" she retorted. "But that’s all it is to you, isn’t it?! A game! You’re making fun of me! I’m a woman, Dante, not a slut! I notice and I react, yes, but I don’t like being teased; I don’t like being made fun of! You got something to say, you say it to my face, don’t go around playing and toying with me! I know what you’re doing, you’re trying to seduce me, but you don’t seem to give a damn how it makes me feel!" she said quickly. He stared at her, briefly, then suddenly got off from leaning against the counter and strode up to her, so abruptly and suddenly that she thought he was angry, and hurriedly back-stepped till her back hit the wall behind her. Cornered again!
“You’re wrong. I don’t think this a game, and I do give a damn. This is all happening because you don’t give me anything to go on. So you’re basically saying I’m acting like an ass; but look at it my way for a sec" he said, looming over her with hand against the wall she was cornered on, the other in his pocket. "Fact is, you’ve been around for a while... And I can’t help myself anymore. Yes, you do know what I’m up to. Come on, we’re adults, this isn’t a game. The thing is that... you can’t make up your mind if you want to ‘do it’ or not."
Tess let a small sound of protest, blushed hard and was about to start arguing, but he shushed her with a finger on her lips."Don’t argue. We both know that you actually do—don’t give me that look Tess, I’m not stupid either. I can tell you like the attention. You just admit that you did. But you’re always freaking out too, even if that’s not what I want. I mean...do I really come off as that shallow to you? I don’t want a fling, so stop worrying about that already."
They just stared at each other, faces close and bodies gravitating towards each other reluctantly."...Do you mean that" she uttered.
He just nodded. "I’m no good at...relationships, but dammit, I’ll try."
She just stared in surprise and disbelief. "...Who are you and what have you done with Dante?" she quipped."...I’m an alien cockroach, I killed Dante, skinned him for disguise, locked him in the basement and I plan to carry you off for experiments" he stated mock-seriously.
An awkward moment of silence passed where they just stared at each other, the tension totally diffusing, and then Tess seemed to chuckle and her lips twitched. She looked...relieved, like some weight came off her chest and finally let her breathe.
"...Never mind, it’s you alright" she chuckled, smiling.
He grinned. "Had you there, didn’t I?"
"Ahaha, hmm, yes for a tiny second you did" she said, her laugh ending in a small smile and finally breathing out, as if relieved. A bit cautiously she reached out and before either knew it, she gave him a hug. "Thanks...for being honest” she said, a little awkward.
"Uh...heh...you’re...welcome?" he scratched the back of his head awkwardly too, and his other arm snaked around her waist, but stayed there."You silly, silly man" she muttered, smirking "So I really mess you up bad?"
"Damn right you do. You wicked little witch..." he purred, feeling quite sure he’d scored the jackpot at last. She chuckled at that and kept hugging him. Ooh, now that felt nice. It was good that they finally were clear on each other’s mind-state. And…to get a hug from a guy like Dante...was good; very good. She refrained with great difficulty from stroking those toned muscles, and kept her cool, so that his dashing scent didn’t sweep her up. She always liked that about him. With her head resting against his shoulder, she breathed in a mix of night, steel, sweat and power; it gave her happy goose-bumps! But she still checked herself, determined to keep her dignity, if she would give him a chance.
And a run for his money, if she could!
Her spirits rising to playfulness and mischief again, despite how intimate she felt towards him, she was determined to exact a little bit of vengeance on him for those earlier ‘possessiveness fits’. So what if he was a rock-star-like, absolutely charming badass? She could be a ‘player’ too, if she put her mind to it, regardless of her shyness. Now that it was out in the open, she could be a little bitchy and tease him for real. Show him what she was really worth. If he really wanted her, he’d have to try harder. And, oh did she plan to make him try harder!
She looked up at him apologetically. "Um...I’m sorry I yelled at you...again..."
"Wasn’t so bad, I’ve seen you do worse" he replied, bending his head down to look straight at her.Now it was her turn to smirk “Have you, now?"
"Of course."
It happened very naturally, she barely registered pushing up on the balls of her feet slightly making her lips press on his. He was eager to welcome them and didn’t fail to note how better it was that he didn’t have to demand it from her. Feeling confident that he had won, he got more intimate, venturing his tongue to her lips and when they obediently parted a little, he slipped it in her mouth. His hands roamed down along her back to her waist and headed lower. Just as he was enjoying the sensation of the sweet curve, she pulled back suddenly with a sly look."…What?” he quipped, staring.
"Not so fast Romeo"
she chuckled, snaking out of his arms."Huh? Didn’t we just...?" he thought, more or less bewildered. "I thought…?""Oh no..." she cut him, smirking. "You’re not getting anything just like that" she added, stepping by him and picking up a mug, filling it with coffee from the machine’s jug.
"Wha--look, didn’t I just tell you that--"
"Oh, noooo, I don’t mean it that way" she said, assuming a totally innocent look and sipping some coffee, making a little grimace at how strong it was and then adding sugar to it. "Dante, the sentiments here are mutual, don’t worry about that, but don’t you think you’re just gonna sweep me off my feet that easily!""Christ..." he groaned, rolling his eyes. It just suddenly dawned on him she was sending right back at him what he’d been doing all along. "Fine, what am I supposed to do?"She laughed a little. "Gosh, stop sounding like you’re about to get hanged!!" she chuckled. "You take everything so seriously sometimes. I just meant I don’t want to rush through this." She took another sip of coffee, leaning against the counter and looking at him. "I mean, technically I’m just a houseguest here. How about this; lets go out tonight, just you and me. You pick place, you pick setting, and if Enzo turns up with any annoying little job suggestion... I’ll kick him out of the door right away, hmm?""A date, huh..."
"Yup. Hey, we should at least go on one; if anything, just for the sake of making some mood. It might be fun. Or maybe it’s below you?""...Hell no, it’s not that. Alright, I’m game. But why later? Why not just...uh, now?""Uh, no, can't do" she said coolly, draining her coffee. "I gotta go."
He raised an eyebrow. "Go where?"
She washed out her mug. "D’uh, what have I been doing the last week or so? Looking for a place to get for myself. I think I might have a pretty good chance to score a deal today.”"You don’t have to do that.""Nuh-uh, I do. Of course I appreciate you putting up with me. However, you know we both need some private time sometimes. ‘Sides, no offence, but I think Roy will go mad if he stays another day here... Speaking of him, he’s vanished again, fuzzy slacker. So...I’m sorry, but you won’t be changing my mind on that subject."
He bit back a smirk or chuckle, looking back onto his brief conversation with the familiar. "Alright, have your way, miss determination" he said, rolling his eyes.
She mock-frowned and smiled. "Good. I love it when you agree with me for a change. Its not gonna kill you to wait a little."
“Wait a little!?” he echoed, feigning exasperated."You’re close to making me flip and you tell me to wait a little?! Just what are you talking about anyway?"
She just giggled, a little wickedly, and passed by him and reaching up, turned his face with her hand on his cheek, and kissed his other cheek softly. "Good things get better with time. See you later Romeo, and don’t forget you got a date!" she said, then hurried out before he could counter that.He stared at the door after she left it briefly. He then turned to pour himself some coffee, and drank some without any sugar. "Huh...Women; I don’t get them...and I’ll never understand her!" he muttered, scowling a little.
But it slipped into a lopsided grin. "But apparently she understands me perfectly, because I kinda like this ‘date’ idea..."
