A/N: Thanks for the reviews. ^^ I wasn’t
actually expecting any, what with it being such a random pairing, lol.
I apologise if Ethan is OOC… it’s hard to write main characters. ><
Ethan
wasn’t sure what time it was when they finally got enough of each other… for
the time being. He was lying with his face in the crook of Tylor’s
neck, simply breathing in and out and enjoying the smell of him.
For his
part, the rogue was smiling lazily to himself, his half-lidded eyes gazing up
at the ceiling. “Ethan.”
“Mm?” the
human intoned, tightening his arm around Tylor’s
waist.
“You know,
it won’t be simple.”
Ethan sat
up a little at that. “What do you mean?”
The beast
looked at him, wearing a serious expression. “You’re a Guardian, and I’m a
rogue. There will obviously be complications. Are you alright with that?”
Ethan
smiled breezily. “We’ll find ways around them. I don’t mind.”
“Oh, I
see.”
Ethan
propped his chin up with one hand, admiring his lover’s face. “What about you?
Are you bothered?”
Tylor
took a long stretch, exhaling through his nose. “No, it might be better this
way.”
Ethan
frowned a little, not really understanding what the beast meant. He shrugged it
off, and grinned. “By the way…”
“What is
it?”
“…I’ve been
calling you by your surname this entire time, haven’t I?”
Tylor
smirked. “Everyone does.”
“Well, I’m
not sure I wanna be like everyone. Could I call you
by your first name…?” Ethan asked tentatively.
Tylor
screwed up his nose. “There’s no need for that.”
“Huh? Oh… then, how about Al?”
Tylor
stared at him.
“…Alfie?”
The beast
snorted and rolled onto his side in disgust.
Ethan
laughed. “I guess I’ll stick with ‘Tylor’, then.” He
watched as the rogue smiled at him from over his shoulder, before sitting up
and getting out of bed. Ethan’s mouth fell open, and he pointed at Tylor’s backside. “D-did I do that!?”
The blonde
blinked, looking down at himself to see that his rear was marked with dark red
scratches. “…Apparently so,” he smirked at Ethan, shaking his head. “You’re
more of a beast than I am.”
Ethan had
the grace to blush, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “…Sorry.
I don’t remember doing it.”
Tylor
chuckled, stooping to pick up his discarded clothes and putting them back on.
“Don’t sweat it.”
Ethan felt
an unaccountable pang in his chest, somehow uncomfortable with the sight of Tylor walking away from him. “Uh, Tylor…?”
The rogue
leader turned around, fastening his bracer around his forearm. “Hm?”
Ethan
lowered his eyes. “…Nothing, never mind.” The Guardian tried to shake off the odd
chill seeping into his gut.
Tylor
hesitated, running a hand through his golden mane before stepping over to Ethan
and leaning down, wrapping his arms around his shoulders. He kissed the human
softly, resting their foreheads together. “I have some things to do, but you’re
welcome to stick around for a while. Let me know when you want to head back to
the G-colony… I’ll take you there.”
Ethan
reached up and twined his own arms around Tylor’s
neck, kissing him again. “Okay…” he looked up with a slightly unsure smile,
stroking strands of hair from the beast’s eyes. “…How did you get that scar, Tylor?”
The rogue
blinked. “You’re really… curious.”
“You want
to say ‘nosey’, don’t you?” Ethan sighed. “Never mind, it’s none of my business,
I guess,” he said, unable to keep the trace of bitterness from his voice.
Tylor
tilted his head slightly, regarding Ethan in contemplative silence. He slowly
detached himself and walked over to a desk without another word.
Ethan
frowned to himself, wondering why he had to act so weird all of a sudden. He sighed
again, and began to get dressed.
Tylor was
sorting through some files on the desk when Ethan’s arms wound themselves about
his waist, causing him to tense out of reflex.
“…It’s
just, I don’t know very much about you… that’s all,” the younger man said in a
forlorn tone.
Tylor
smiled sympathetically, turning in his partner’s arms and returning the
embrace. “…Sorry. I’m not used to it. The attention, I
mean. Don’t take it personally…” the beast said apologetically, nuzzling just
below Ethan’s ear. “Are you annoyed with me? I’m sorry.”
Ethan
couldn’t help but smile once more. “Nah. I can’t be.”
He looked into Tylor’s garnet-coloured eyes for a
long moment, then exhaled softly. “I suppose I’d
better get back… Tonnio might be wondering where I
am.”
Tylor nodded.
“Alright, I’ll see you at the bridge. Go find Tonnio,”
the beast said, giving the smaller male a chaste kiss before turning and
leaving the room.
*******
When Ethan
found Tonnio, the small beast was staring at him in a
peculiar way. He then turned to look at Liina
incredulously, who just returned it with a smug look of her own.
Suspicious,
Ethan took a step back. “What? What is it?”
“Nothin’,” Tonnio replied shortly,
sticking his tiny nose in the air. “You ready to go home?”
“Yeah…”
Ethan said, feeling a little disappointed at the
prospect of spending the night alone. It was amazing how quickly he had become
used to Tylor’s presence.
“Okay,
let’s go see Tylor… he IS giving us a ride home,
right?”
“Don’t be
so rude, Tonnio!” Liina
protested with a scowl. “Tylor’s a lot nicer than you
give him credit for,” she looked at Ethan with a twinkle in her eye. “…Right,
Ethan?”
The young
man went red.
Tonnio
made a noise of disgust, stomping off towards the bridge. Liina
shrugged and ran after him, leaving Ethan to compose himself before following.
*******
There was
silence in the bridge room, which to Ethan at least, was stifling.
Tylor was
standing in his usual place at the helm, staring resolutely out the window. It
made the Guardian uneasy. He hadn’t exactly expected the rogue to announce
their new relationship to his crew, but something about his aloofness still
stung.
He was also
consciously aware of the way that the two small beasts were watching him. Liina was alternating her thoughtful doe-eyed gaze from
Ethan to Tylor, whereas Tonnio
was staring unflinchingly at Ethan. It was incredibly unnerving.
It didn’t
help that the Vol brothers were lurking nearby, too,
doing what Ethan assumed to be some kind of asinine dance routine. He wondered
to himself how his suave and fool-intolerant lover put up with them at all.
“We’ve
arrived,” Tylor said, breaking the silence. He turned
to look at the others, his gaze lingering on Ethan.
The human
averted his eyes, still downcast about having to return to his somewhat sterile
room.
“What’s
wrong, Ethan?” the rogue leader said, a hint of concern in his voice.
The young
male shook his head miserably. “It’s fine, I’ll tell
you about it some other time,” he mumbled.
Tylor
looked a little more alert, at that. “…I see.” He nodded firmly, and said in a
voice that only Ethan could hear, “Then I’ll be sure to make time for it.”
So now he’s the one who’s all interested in me?
Why is this so hard, all of a sudden? All that time we spent together, in that
room… I know right now, nothing will ever beat it. But… when am I gonna see him again…? Ethan leaned his chin into his hand as he
mulled it all over in his head. He looked back at Tylor,
who was doing the same thing from over his shoulder.
His dark
red eyes seemed to be saying, ‘This isn’t over’.
Ethan
really hoped it was intended, because frankly, he needed some support in terms
of where their relationship stood.
“I hope
we’re allowed to dock the Landeel here… Dallgun gave us the OK last time. Right, Liina?” Tylor said, breaking his
stare from Ethan.
“Yup, no problems at all. You helped Ethan out big-time with that last
battle, so you’re sort of a hero yourself, Tylor!” Liina beamed.
Tonnio
grumbled something in the background, but no one paid any attention.
Tylor
just laughed. “I only took him to that satellite--”
“Which no
one else would do,” Ethan chipped in. “And you waited for me. Well, er, us, I mean…
But you waited, and you could have just bailed outta
there when it started to get ugly.”
“I would
never do that,” Tylor interjected smoothly, “and I
owed you from the time in the desert.”
“Is that
the only reason you helped me, then?” Ethan said in an uncharacteristically
dull voice, pointedly ignoring the way that even the Vol
brothers were listening in now.
At that, Tylor frowned deeply, looking the angriest
Ethan had ever seen him. His blood ran a little cold then. In a voice that was
as icy as it was calm, the beast said, “No, Ethan, I helped you because we’re
friends. I thought you were aware of that.” He turned back to the control
panel, glowering.
Feeling
guilty, the human looked down at his feet. He felt the floor trembling slightly
as the Landeel docked. The Vol
brothers were gawking at him now, and Liina had
graciously become interested in one of the computer screens. Tonnio just looked completely nonplussed.
Once the
exit of the ship was aligned with the space port’s connecting bridge, Tonnio made his way to the door with Liina,
giving Tylor a half-hearted wave. The Vol brothers slouched off to find someone else to annoy,
leaving Ethan and Tylor alone again.
Ethan gazed
at the ship’s captain with a wounded expression. “T-Tylor? I didn’t mean to make you mad… I’m an idiot,
okay? I’m a stupid moron.”
The beast
eventually looked over at the Guardian. “…Just what do you want me to say?”
Ethan
winced. “I don’t know… I don’t know, I just… I hate this! I don’t know when I’m
gonna see you again! You’re taking it so well, which
makes me feel like an idiot, and…” he gestured wildly, getting himself truly
distressed, “…I’m saying stupid things…”
The pirate’s
expression softened quickly, and he moved over to pull Ethan against his chest.
“Wait, wait, wait… you’re getting it all wrong,” he said in his soothing voice.
Ethan took
a deep breath, running a hand into Tylor’s longish
blonde hair. “…Yeah?”
Tylor
nodded. “Do you really think I’m fine with all this? I don’t like the idea of
seeing you on the sly, either… that’s why I warned you
it would be difficult. Just look at it this way- when we do meet, we’ll appreciate it that much more. You know?”
Ethan sniffed
a bit, nodding against Tylor’s shoulder.
The beast
blinked, looking down at Ethan’s coppery head. “Ethan, you aren’t… crying, are
you?”
“No way!”
the human protested adamantly, pulling back and running his sleeve across his
face. “I’m just relieved, that’s all.”
“Good,” Tylor said sincerely. “Now show me a smile, and be on your
way.”
Ethan did
so, but it faltered quickly. “Wait a minute… isn’t there any way for us to
contact each other…?”
Tylor
rubbed his chin, frowning. “I don’t know, Ethan… it could be traced. Guardians
aren’t supposed to communicate with rogues.”
Ethan
absorbed this, sorely tempted to stamp his foot in annoyance. “Damn, you’re
right about this not being simple,” he sighed. “Alright… okay. Hey, but wait a
minute! How do Liina and Tonnio
keep in touch, then?? They meet up a lot!”
Tylor
looked genuinely bewildered. “…I hadn’t thought of that. I have no idea how
they do it. Hmm… tell you what- I’ll think of something.”
Ethan
smiled wholeheartedly this time. “Ok, I’ll think on it too. I better be off,
then.” He still looked a little regretful, but covered it well as he leaned in
to kiss Tylor slowly and meaningfully. “See ya around!”
“Later,
Ethan,” Tylor responded, holding his hand up in a
simple wave.
Ethan left
the Landeel, took a deep breath, and set off towards
the barracks with a large smile on his face.
*******
“Ethan!
You’re finally back! Where have you been all this time? The Guardians HQ said
you weren’t on a mission,” Hyuga Ryght
babbled, walking alongside Ethan as the smaller male made for his room.
“Geez, that’s creepy, you know… checking up on me!” Ethan
made a face at his team-mate. “I bet you’re actually upset that I’m back… ‘cos I’ll stop you from sleazing up
my sister!”
“Ethan, that really hurts me!” Hyuga
wailed, following Ethan into his room without permission. “You really don’t
understand my intentions at all!”
“Ugh, I
don’t want to know!” Ethan replied,
stretching luxuriously before collapsing on the bed. After a while of lounging
there, he sat up, and instantly flinched. “Ow!”
“What?
What’s wrong, Ethan?” Hyuga asked in concern, leaning
down in front of him. “You don’t look hurt…”
Ethan
glared at Hyuga, wondering why it hurt so much to… Oh. So much for tomorrow- it kicked in
early! Damn that Tylor… but still… hehe. The Guardian smirked to himself as he thought
about just how the ‘wound’ was inflicted.
“Ethan,
you’re worrying me. You’ve been behaving oddly lately, and not just at this
moment in time… even before that, you looked like something was really eating
you. Can’t you tell me?” the foppish young Guardian sat next to Ethan, his brow
furrowed.
Ethan arched
his eyebrow. “Hyuga, don’t you have girls to chat up?
I’m kinda tired, you know… I’ve been busy.”
“Doing what, though?” Hyuga
whined impatiently. “You never go off on your own like that!”
“I wasn’t
alone, though… I was with Tonnio,” Ethan shrugged. It
wasn’t exactly a lie, either.
“Huh? It’s
weird for you two to hang out… where did you go? Moatoob?”
“Hyuga, I’m flattered by your persistence, I really am, but
I meant it when I said I was tired. I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay?” The
shorter male made a big show of yawning.
Hyuga
sighed, clearly unsatisfied. “Fine… but I’ll hold you to that!” the playboy
said in his sternest voice, before leaving Ethan alone.
Ethan
sighed in relief. “What a pain… and speaking of which, owww,
my butt…”
“Good
evening, Master Waber!” Pete came swooping by, “Did
you have a nice trip?”
Ethan
rubbed his temples, not really wanting any more small chat. “I told you to call
me ‘Ethan’… and yeah, I did.”
“There is a
mission for you tomorrow. Please report to headquarters as soon as you wake up!
Goodnight, Ethan!”
“Yeah… g’nite,” the Guardian replied with a casual wave of his
arm, taking his nano-transformer off and getting
comfortable on the bed. He frowned slightly to himself, wishing he had the
warmth of a certain male beast beside him. Trying to block out the enticing
images of his lover’s tanned body, Ethan went to sleep.
*******
When
morning came, Ethan smiled to himself, reaching out to pull his lover close…
…Only to
roll right out of bed, and land on the floor with a loud thud.
“Hey, what
the--” the human groaned, rubbing his hip. He took a moment to grasp his
surroundings, and sighed as he remembered the current state of affairs.
“Master
Ethan, are you alright?” Pete hovered down near Ethan’s face. “I’ve never seen
you get out of bed this early before!”
“It wasn’t
intentional, believe me…” the Guardian grumbled, slowly getting to his feet. He
slunk off into the bathroom, muttering under his breath as he went.
When he
re-emerged, fixing his nano-transformer on his back,
he found his sister waiting for him. “Oh, Lumia…
where did you come from?” Ethan yawned as his clothes materialised.
The young
girl pouted at him, then began gesturing wildly. “Ethan,
where have you been!? You just went off without saying anything to me!”
“Lumia, it’s not like I can give you a formal farewell
before every mission!”
“Well, Hyuga said you weren’t on a mission!” Lumia
argued, hands on hips.
Ethan
glared at his younger sibling. “It’s none of his business, okay? Nor yours!”
“You’re so
horrible to me lately! What’s your problem!? Karen says you haven’t talked to
her in ages, either!”
Ethan
clenched his fist at that. “I have people far more important to spend time
with. People who actually feel the same way!”
Lumia’s
eyes welled up and she stamped a foot. “Big idiot!” and she stormed out.
“Good
riddance…” Ethan mumbled half-heartedly, running a hand through his hair. Being
back on the colony was all very well, but he could do without the constant nagging.
He desperately wished that Tylor would steal him away
right about now.
His phone
started beeping for attention, and with a sigh, he flicked on the screen.
“Ethan, you
said you would speak to me today. You haven’t forgotten, right? Meet me by the
fountain, okay? Don’t be late!” the holographic image of Hyuga
faded with a wave.
Ethan’s
expression darkened even more. He really couldn’t be bothered with this right
now.
With
another heavy sigh, the Guardian left the room.
*******
On the way
to the central table, Ethan saw Tonnio hanging around.
The small beast almost smiled, but it quickly faded into the usual scowl again.
“Hey, Ethan! Where you sneaking off
to?”
“Nowhere…
I’m meeting Hyuga here in a minute. What about you?”
“Nothin’ much…” the other Guardian shrugged, looking
uncomfortable.
“What’s up?
You missing Liina?” Ethan
asked somewhat hopefully. He knew he would feel better if he wasn’t the only
one pining.
Tonnio
scuffed a shoe on the floor. “Well, yeah… she still hasn’t given me an answer.”
“Aw… hey,
don’t worry… it’s a big decision, after all.”
“I know,
but it’s been ages!” the blonde whined. There was brief silence, and then, “By
the way…”
“What is
it?”
“What’s goin’ on with you and Tylor?”
Ethan
stiffened. “Huh…?”
“Oh, come
ON… Liina said there was something happening, and I
didn’t believe her, but when I saw you both acting weird in the bridge… damn
it, Ethan, you better not…” the small beast trailed off, looking at his feet.
“I better
not what?” the human asked,
concerned.
Looking
like he was fighting with himself, the small beast shifted about. He glared
back up at Ethan before lunging forward and grabbing his sleeve. “…You better
not go off and become a rogue with him, too!”
Genuinely
touched, Ethan clapped a hand over one of Tonnio’s
dark-skinned shoulders. “That’s crazy, okay? I won’t do that. I’ll be a
Guardian ‘til I die. Got that?” he shook Tonnio for
emphasis.
The
azure-eyed beast sniffed in mild disbelief, then nodded. “Fine.
Don’t you dare go back on that! Later.” Tonnio turned
and ran off.
Ethan
smiled to himself, glad that the small Guardian had stopped beating around the
bush with his weird stares and snide comments. Remembering he had to meet his
so-called partner, the teenager resumed his previous journey.
