01/16/2013 There was a problem with this chapter showing up correctly. I flew through it and made a few moderations. I hope that that makes it easier for some readers. Thanks for your support!
______________________________________________________________________ Above the Clouds ______________________________________________________________________ There were ninety-three steps ascending to Axel’s dwelling, and frankly, he preferred it that way. He didn’t have to use them every time, but if he so chose to, they were there, silent and sturdy. Today was one of those days that he elected to use them instead of the elevator. Yes, it had been a long day, and the trek upwards would be even more tiring, but Axel liked having the time to think to himself. No one else would be around because everyone hated climbing them. Sskt sskt sskt sskt… Each step brought him farther away from the bourgeois nightmare that called itself ‘Organization 13.’ Sskt sskt sskt… He could feel his stress nearly falling off of him as he ascended higher and higher. Now there was only one concern on his mind, and it was the one that was the most important to him. It was a problem that he didn’t know how to solve, and that frustrated him to no extent. To top it off, he didn’t even know how he could put the problem into words. Everything inside of him seemed to be contradicting itself. Roxas was convinced that he loved Riku, and Axel knew that Roxas hadn’t lied to him. He released a long and heavy sigh on the fourth flight of stairs, taking a moment to lean against the winding stone stairwell and to glance down to see how far he had come. He couldn’t see very far, the walls curved in such a fashion that he could only see half of the last flight he’d climbed. Forty-eight done: many more to go. Eh, it was just as well. He hadn’t solved his problem yet—actually, he realized that he probably never would. After a moment, he continued climbing. Sskt sskt sskt… Riku didn’t love Roxas back. He wasn’t a complete asshole, but from what Axel had seen, Riku was far more infatuated with Sora than he was with Roxas. Part of the pyromaniac was glad for this—that meant that Riku and Roxas could never be an item. Another part of him was angry though, because that meant that Roxas’ feelings were being wasted on someone who didn’t give a rats-ass about him. He didn’t care if he was being biased here. In fact, he had every right to be. His own softly staggering breathing reached his ears as he rounded the sixth flight. Wasn’t his heart getting enough of a work out with his dilemma? Why couldn’t Roxas just see who really loved him? It was maddening, really… Did Roxas really enjoy that sort of half-baked messy love? “Well, if that’s the case, then he deserves it, the twit!” Axel growled jealously. “Damnit, this was a stupid idea. I’m never taking these damn stairs again.” Like usual, he knew he didn’t mean a word of it. He sat down on the ninety-second step, letting his ankles reach down for the rim of step number eighty-eight. His palms tightened over his knees through the thick black cloth. “I didn’t mean to yell at you today,” he whispered to the boy he carried in his heart. “I just can’t stand to see you hurt yourself over someone who doesn’t deserve you.” His forehead fell into the web of his thumb, the tip of his empty ring finger caressing one of his temples. “It’s not worth it,” he continued, whispering this now more for himself than Roxas, “I’m not forcing you to accept my love, but just don’t accept his lack of it.” Now in silence, he sat there for a moment. His mind was still whirring, disappointed with itself for not being able to come up with a way to fix all of the aching holes. Axel knew he was a Nobody, but he also knew that he wasn’t a Heartless. His ‘lack of heart,’ as far as Axel was concerned, was because Roxas had stolen it from him. “H-hmmn-n-n…” he shivered, standing with his arms pulled tight around his own torso. A chilly gust had just slipped through the cloak and had just traveled down his spine. “I’ll make a fire,” he mumbled to himself, taking the last step and finally finishing his climb up the stairs. “Maybe I’ll take a shower too…” His door was as plain as any other, but it was a welcome sight for a man whose emotions had run him ragged. His hand turned the icy door knob quickly, easing the door open only to be hit with a much stronger chill. It felt like he’d just stepped into an arctic freezer. The cold crept down into his lungs, freezing his chest while they struggled to release a translucent white gasp. The gasp danced into the air, staying a strong white before fading into the darkness of the room. Already shivering almost violently, Axel left the door open and hurried to the fireplace to ignite it. He always kept his room perfectly warm because he hated the cold so very much. How it had turned into such a brumal place, he only had one idea. Once the fire was lit, he saw that his guess was correct. “Roxas?” he asked, the name rolling off of his tongue with another gust into the cold air. Illuminated by the fire, his breath reflected orange before dissipating. Roxas turned away from the open window moment enough to glance at the male speaking to him. “I’m sorry, I didn’t notice how cold it got in here…” “What are you doing?” Axel asked curiously, drawing himself up next to the open window. Roxas followed his movements with his gaze before replacing his chin on his folded hands on the windowsill. “Nothing, really… I was just thinking… but I didn’t really want to be alone.” “It’s really cold out tonight,” Axel commented, his green eyes locked on Roxas’ shining cheeks. “How long have you been here? Have you just been waiting for me? What’s so fantastic about the stars that you’re willing to subject yourself to frostbite?” A weak smile traversed Roxas’ face. “Nothing, really. I was just thinking about the other worlds too, you know? You’ve traveled to a lot of them, I bet, but I haven’t. Do they look up and see the same stars as we do? Are they all just like us? Or… I mean… are they all just regular people? Who go to work every day and go to school and lead a normal life?” “I guess so… everyone’s a little different though, right?” Axel asked, his eyes roaming over Roxas’ cloak. The way that it was bundled over him it seemed more like he was just a head and hands poking out of darkness itself. “No, this isn’t mine,” Roxas answered, recognizing the questioning look in the green eyes that rolled over his form. “It’s Riku’s then,” Axel determined with a frown. Roxas rocked his head forwards and back on his folded hands. “When I got there, mine was soaked. It was still soaked when… …He told me to take his.” “That’s considerate…I suppose…” Axel tried not to growl. “Am I to take it then, that you two are still ruining each other’s lives?” “Yea, that’s pretty much what he said, too,” Roxas agreed in an exhausted sounding tone. He turned his attention away from the stars a little bit, wanting to see Axel’s expression. His brows appeared to be slightly furrowed. “What’s that look for?” “Roxas, you’ve been crying… your cheeks look kind of frosty…” Roxas turned his sights away from Axel but didn’t stop his warm hand from gently making contact with his cheekbones. Suddenly, that pressure increased as Axel firmly cupped his cheek. “Jesus, you’re absolutely frozen! You feel like marble!” “I don’t feel a thing,” Roxas answered, appearing to ignore Axel’s warm hand as it almost frantically unfolded to warm his ear as well. “I feel so numb right now… inside and out,” he added, silky white puffs evaporating from his lips almost instantaneously instead of lingering in the air. “Roxas, c’mon, shut the window,” Axel pleaded, kneeling down beside him. He let his other hand move to Roxas’ back. With Roxas, such gestures came naturally to Axel. He could tell that Roxas was upset again, but he couldn’t tell what it was about right at the moment. When his hand made contact, he pulled it away again as fast as if he had just licked the inside of a lit oven. “Your clothes are wet, too!” he exclaimed, moving his entire arm around Roxas so he could try and warm him with his body heat. “Did he get caught in the mist too or something?” he nearly demanded, wanting to jerk the boy away from the window whether he wanted to move or not. “No…” Roxas answered slowly, “His cloak was dry… that’s why he gave it to me…I think he wanted to make sure that I didn’t get sick or something because mine was damp…And, then on the way back…” his voice trailed off softly, as if he half expected Axel to already know how his cloak had gotten drenched. “But then—” Axel started. Riku wanted Roxas to not catch a cold from walking around in a damp cloak…but Roxas thought he’d be safe to wear a wet cloak in the middle of an absolutely freezing room!? “On the way back,” Roxas continued, “I couldn’t see where I was going…” Axel leaned his head down on Roxas’ shoulder, knowing what he was going to say just by the way that his voice had emotionally broken. “I couldn’t see where I was going and I tripped… And I fell down like… four stairs and fell in this big puddle… and I still couldn’t see because the dirt and the salt stung my eyes and that only made it worse…” The soft trembling of the blonde’s body secured Axel’s embrace even tighter. “Roxas…” he tried to soothe, letting his hand caress his cheek gently. “It didn’t rain, either. I kept waiting for it to rain, but it never rained. Not once. I was just lying there because I couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t know what to do. So I came here. Even though you’re so mad at me, I didn’t know what else to do!” he finished, resting his own forehead against his folded hands. “I’m not mad at you,” Axel clarified, “I’m glad you came, and I’m glad you told me. I’m sorry you had to wait, though…” Roxas shook his head wildly. “No, no it’s okay. I needed to calm down anyway…” he chuckled weakly, “but I guess it didn’t do much good after all because now I’m crying again anyhow.” “Hey, it’s okay to cry,” Axel informed him strongly. There was no way in hell that he was going to let Roxas feel even worse about himself than he probably already did. He had no idea what had gone on while Roxas was with Riku, but from the result, he could only assume that it hadn’t been a positive experience. He didn’t get much agreement from Roxas unless one could call a soft “nnhmm…” agreement. “Let’s get you cleaned up. C’mon,” Axel proposed definitively. He stood, taking Roxas with him in the movement. Then, he shut the window, knowing that it was the only thing that was keeping the room from being toasty warm. “First we’ll get this sodden thing off of you. Are your clothes wet underneath too? How on earth are you not a Walt Disney?” Roxas shook his head softly, “No, I’m not wearing clothes underneath. This was the only thing keeping me warm.” Axel froze a moment. All Roxas was wearing was Riku’s wet cloak? And Roxas thought that it was enough to keep him warm? There were no clothes underneath it? Roxas was completely nude under there? “Well, I have a fire on,” he informed, steering Roxas towards it from behind, “I’ll go draw a bath for you so you can wash up too. Hm? Oh…” he smiled softly when Roxas turned around suddenly to hug him. “It’s okay,” he reassured. “I’m not going anywhere.” Roxas nodded his head into his chest a little bit. “I don’t know what I’d do without a friend like you, Axel. I think sometimes I might just… die…or something…” ‘I don’t want to be just your friend, Roxas,’ Axel mentally answered him, bowing his head down into Roxas’ hair as his arms circled his waist. Even after all Roxas had described, his blonde hair still had that fresh scent that Axel had fallen in love with. “Let’s see about that bath, okay?” he suggested, lifting one of his hands to perch at the back of Roxas’ hair. “It’ll make you feel better.” Roxas’ hug tightened around him. “Cleaner, warmer, and happier,” Axel continued, torn between wanting Roxas to never take that bath and wanting him to take four steps back. The temptation was overwhelming when they were this close and when Axel knew what he did about the other’s state of dress. There was a soft sigh and Axel could feel Roxas’ arms loosening from around his waist. “Okay,” the blonde agreed, “You’re right. I just have to pull myself together.” “That’ll be easier after a warm bath.” “…Axel?” “Yea?” “Can it be a bubble bath?” The taller organization member was silent for a moment as he looked down at the lifting hopeful and almost out-of-place consonance. “A bubble bath?” he echoed. He got a blank response. “Yea, sure,” he consented with a shrug. “I hope you like vanilla.”1/21/2013: My writing style has changed a lot I think.
