Meeting
6:30 p.m.Yurika stared up at the clock as if she were trying to get it do to her bidding. She put a protective hand over her stomach to settle the uneasiness threatening to bubble up. Most of her friends would be here tonight, cheering her on. After everything that happened, did she have the right to accept their friendship? No matter how anyone worded it, she was part of the Darkside Student Organization and despite her hesitance, she willingly infiltrated Seijyuun. They say they are my friends…she thought. But are they just saying that so I won’t be sad?"Why do you have such a guilty look on your face?” A familiar voice chimed. “You usually smile before you head out on the stage.” Yurika turned around to face the young woman. Sizune Kujo was another musical prodigy from Taiyo. Since they were both multitalented people assumed they carried a fierce rivalry. The thought merely confused Sizune. The dark-haired musician always felt rivalries wasted precious energy that could be spent on more productive things and Yurika shared her sentiments.“I always thought the wait was the worst part of these things.” Sizune covered her mouth, stifling a yawn. “It’s so cozy backstage.”“True.” Yurika gazed out in the audience. “Just think of all those people out there. We got a lot of publicity for this event.” Sizune nodded in agreement. “Guess we should start tuning, huh?”With that the two busied themselves with their instruments. Yurika took out her violin and began tuning it. Sizune cracked her fingers and after a minute or so, she spoke.“We’ve all forgiven you.” Yurika paused at the girl’s outburst. She listened to Sizune’s steps as they drew closer but she stopped about a foot away, intertwining her fingers. “I heard what happened and I’m sorry. I hope he recovers…and that he’s at least learned from his mistakes.”Touched by her concern, Yurika spun around and hugged her. Sizune gasped; surprised by her sudden movements but she relaxed and hugged her back. Yurika pulled away, resting her hands on the shorter girl’s shoulders. “Thank you, Sizune-chan. Your words mean a lot to me right now.” The lights darkened and the audience erupted into preemptive applause. “You better get ready, Yurika-chan, it’s almost time.” They both hurried off, making their final preparations.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Yurika peered through the curtain, searching through the sea of faces. She barely knew anyone here but that didn’t deter her. Detecting her cue, Yurika made her way towards the middle of the stage, giving a graceful curtsey to her fellow musicians. She sat down on the on the stool and tucked her violin under her chin, raising her bow in preparation. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glance of a vaguely familiar face. Recognizing the young redhead, her thoughts trailed back to that unfortunate night but his smiling face clouded her mind. W-why was he smiling? Yurika scanned the rafters in case someone was waiting to pounce on her before her eyes rested on him. This just might be a trap.“Kagami-san…” She said in an inaudible whisper. His face gave the slightest inclination of a frown and she immediately closed her eyes and started playing. If it was him, what would he say to her? She felt partially responsible for the fate of Imawano Hyo. Perhaps he came here to confront her…or worse. After giving a flawless solo performance, Yurika and the other musicians played a final piece. Upon completion they received a standing ovation, bringing a satisfied smile to Yurika’s face but she faltered when she realized Kyosuke stood and clapped with them.So he just came here to listen to me?Excusing herself, Yurika fled backstage.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Nearly hiding, the young woman sat among the old instruments. It was a place she frequently came to if she needed to think. However nothing came to mind. Yurika sat on the floor, forcing herself to ignore the dirt and hugged her knees to her chest. She waited until she could no longer hear footsteps around and decided to leave.*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Walking through the empty auditorium, Yurika looked around and searched for any signs of an ambush. She watched every shadow and waited for something to jump out and attack. Fortunately, nothing came. What could I possibly say to him? She wondered. Would he have any words for me that didn’t drip with spite? Her nearly poetic thoughts amused her and she chuckled. She sat down in one of the empty auditorium seats and sighed. Something dropped near the stage and she jumped, her head jerking to see what it was.“You seem nervous.” Yurika spun around to see Kyosuke at the end of the row. He stood up. “Is something wrong?” “You waited for me.” Jumping to her feet, her body tensed in anticipation. This felt like a set-up. Yurika glared at him, clenching the handle of her violin case. If it came down to it, she could probably get a good hit on him and run. “Did you just come here to talk to me, Kagami-san?” “Sizune-chan put on a wonderful show.” Kyosuke said as he adjusted his glasses. “The whole arrangement blended well. You all did a good job complimenting each other.”Yurika quietly sighed in relief but she couldn’t shake the feeling he wanted something besides chatting about the show. Kyosuke approached her, silent and stoic. “Still, that’s not the reason why I remained here.” He continued. Yurika caught her breath in her chest and her mind raced to figure out a way to escape. Kyosuke lunged forward and she flinched, twisting her body away from him. He took her hands and held them. “…I want to thank you.” Yurika blinked. She looked down at her hands and then up at him. “Th-Thank me? What for?”“I listened to you play today and for the first time, I wanted to eat.”Yurika raised an eyebrow. “Congratulations?”“Your music brought me back to life. I heard your song and it quelled the unrest inside me.” He met her eyes and continued. “All I knew was that you were Kurow’s sister but I figured a person as talented at you had to be different from him. So I decided to meet the person who reanimated me with such music.”“I…I…” Yurika’s cheeks flushed with the slighted hint of pink. Her heart pounded in her head, drowning out a good chuck of her thoughts. Still speechless, she struggled to find words. The animated emotions in his eyes made something flutter inside and she grew bewildered at her reaction. Was this another kind of Imawano brainwashing? She wondered. Someone behind them loudly cleared their throat and Yurika returned to her senses. The two turned around to see a janitor standing behind a cart of cleaning supplies.“I don’t mean to disturb but I’ve got a job to do.” She said as she searched through the cart. The woman pulled out a broom and started sweeping the carpet. They both apologized and shared a nervous laugh. Kyosuke walked up the aisle and Yurika followed but she wasn’t sure why. The redhead turned back and smiled at her.“If it’s alright with you I’d like to sit down and talk to you freely about everything.” Kyosuke offered.Yurika’s eyes widened. His earnest request alleviated the pressure in her chest and she calmed down. “Y-yes!” she said softly. “I’m open for any time that’s good for you.” His warm smile brought a smile to her face. Kyosuke glanced at his watch. “It’s a little late. Would you mind if I escorted you to your shuttle?”“No…not at all.” He extended his arm out and she embraced it. They left the auditorium, passing the female janitor.“Kids these days…” the janitor grumbled. She then started sweeping down the main row, humming to herself. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
