Chp 3
“It’s been 20 minutes.” Cole sighed, “Are you going to continue to lay there, looking like a dead pedestrian, or are you going to move?”
Belly down on the concrete was Alex, still basking in the after effects of their romp. Cole had dressed shortly after, letting Alex flop gracelessly against the pavement. At least they were both fully clothed. The only response Alex gave was a weak groan.
Cole sniffed himself, “Great. I smell like sweat and sex. What I’d give to be able to take a normal shower.” He muttered that last part to himself, but it didn’t go unheard.
Alex reluctantly composed himself, pushing upright and standing. His body returned to a state of pristine cleanliness and he stalked over to Cole, pulling him into a tight, mandatory kiss. His arms coiled around Cole like a predatory snake, and the sheer amount of strength used made any degree of struggling seem useless.
“I don’t want to share you.” Alex whispered, and his voice came across as vulnerable and curious, as though there was a question under his words begging to be asked.
“Stop pouting.”
Alex’s head lolled from one side to the other just a bit, “M’not pouting. I want you to myself.”
“Whatever happened to this just being a thing of convenience to you? What happened to it being an experiment?”
For as fearless and dominating as Alex was he found he was unable to look Cole in the eye, “I didn’t know you very well at the time. I was actually going to…”
“Kill me. You planned on killing me. And then you were going to consume me.”
Alex met his eyes that time, “If you suspected such why did you agree to have sex?”
“From my standpoint I figured I couldn’t stop you anyway, and I might as well get laid one last time before I died.”
Alex laughed, but it lacked humor, “Do you know why I didn’t kill you that night? It’s because no one else has ever been able to endure me.”
“So you kept me around because I’m recyclable?”
“At first that was it, but I wanted to come back not just for sex but to see how you were. I wanted to… uhm… talk to you.”
Cole smirked at that, “Talk? You want to talk to me? What are you, a woman?” It was in jest, but Alex played along.
“I can be.”
“Don’t even think about it.”
Alex’s smile was genuine, making his eyes bow, “Maybe another time we can experiment with that. For now, you could use a bath.” He brushed his lips over Cole’s temple and unleashed his shifting ability. Tendrils wormed under Cole’s clothing, stroking over his skin.
Cole felt momentarily naked, and a bit disturbed, but when Alex separated from him and provided space he realized he felt refreshed. Even his clothes had been cleaned and repaired. He patted his hands over his chest and stomach, examining the handiwork.
“I didn’t know you could do that.”
“Feel better?”
“I feel amazing.”
Alex purred, moving in again, “So you’re laid for the day and sparkling clean. All ready to run off and save the world.”
“I don’t want to think about saving the world. That’s out of my league.” Cole stretched a band of electricity between his hands, warming up.
“Maybe.” Alex looked to the ocean, “But maybe you’re just what it needs.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`Cole’s throat felt raw. Sweat on his brow ran down his face, causing a snap of electricity to bolt across his line of vision. His arms ached and complained, but he pushed onward and hauled himself over a building ledge. He ran, legs appearing steady despite how wobbly his bones felt.
The Reaper was already scaling the ladder to the connecting building. Cole raised his hand and aimed, but the bolt he fired missed, striking a moment too late. The Reaper vanished from sight and Cole coughed, bending over and placing his hands on his knees. He was done. He couldn’t run any farther. Blood leaked from his mouth and he clutched at his lowest ribs. Broken.
He wanted to sit down, but it was too great a risk. He was deep in Reaper territory. The power had not yet been reestablished in this district, and if he remained in one place too long he’d be signing his life away.
“Bastard.” Cole spit, blood spattering from his lips. There was that taste again.
And that fucking Reaper stole his phone.
Grinding his jaw shut to prevent a frustrated yell from bursting forth, Cole trudged toward safer territory. He leapt off a building and found a functioning light pole. His muscles tensed and he drew the energy forth, absorbing the power and dispersing it between his limbs. He felt the sharp pain in his ribs disappear, lifted as though he’d been cured by a higher power. His exhaustion was reversed and his throat no longer felt like unused sandpaper.
There was an electrical snap as he cut the power drain, exhaling and straightening his posture. He rolled his shoulder and shooed a few muscle kinks out of his back.
“Cole!” Trish’s voice drew his attention and he turned to meet her.
“Trish,” Her face was written over with concern, “are you alright?”
“I should be asking you. You haven’t been answering your phone.”
“Ahh,” he sounded irritated but accepting of his situation, “damn Reaper stole it. I couldn’t catch him. Bastard took off into part of the city that doesn’t have power yet.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`Alex watched the Reapers scurry like little red ants all over the streets. They were busy preparing something. Whatever it was, they seemed in a hurry to complete it. Perhaps Cole was too close for comfort and they were desperately establishing a defense. Strange, considering they were in Dust Man territory.
His eyes were drawn to a distant rooftop. A Reaper stopped, a gun clutched in one arm, and a small device in the other. The lanky body hunched and spewed dark vomit everywhere. Alex scoffed in disgust, able to smell the stench from his perch on top of a billboard. The scent carried something else, something familiar, and an image of Cole flashed through his mind.
He could smell a faint reminder of Cole. He mentally growled and began to slink along the rooftop, unheard and unseen. Had this Reaper recently survived a run-in with Cole? If so, he commended the creature.
As he drew closer he saw the Reaper examine the device in his hand. Alex recognized it as Cole’s cell phone and a dangerous smirk cast over his features.
