Chapter Three: God Help The Outcasts.
“... Did you even attempt to brush your hair, Sora?” The older man asked as he looked dispassionately at the older of his two boys. Even if it was by 6 minutes, Sora was the oldest, and sometimes more mature of the two. Grinning up at his father in that charmingly foolish way, the brunette's appearance was ever the essence that he'd come to truly love. Even if the patriarch of their small family often complained. “Nope! Why bother? It'll just pop up the second I step out the door anyway, and I don't think you want to start another fund for all the hair brushes this ol' mop would eat, pops!” Grimacing at the affectionate nickname, Auron sight and shook his head. “Well if you'd just shave it off, you wouldn't have this problem. Why do you think I keep mine short?” Blanching inwardly, the slender teen just waved his fathers worries off. “Nah I'll just keep it as it is Dad.” Even as he said that, he was imagining how his father would look with such wildly unruly hair as his own, and it only drew out a pealing laugh from him. “What?” Auron growled as he absently rubbed the muscles of his upper left arm. Thanks to an accident from when both he and Roxas had been just babies, Auron had lost the sight in one of his eyes, and very nearly lost the ability to use his left arm. It had taken months of reconstructive surgeries and therapies, according to the man, to salvage some of his muscle function. There was nothing to be done about his right eye though, or the scar that scored his face. Honestly, though, the wounds did nothing to hamper the effect of how ruggedly handsome the man was. Even as he looked that morning, haggard from waking to an early morning, with two days stubble on his jaw, he had a certain masculine charm that was laced with danger. It had been said before that women love a bad boy because of their internal nature to want to tame that wild flame.... Auron was never short on game, but he seemed to be more than unwilling to settle, or date consistently. “Nothing. Just thinking.” Sora dismissed finally, scarfing down his last poptart. He nearly choked when Roxa thumped him on the back. “You're thinking again Sora. Jeeze, what have I told you about doing that? It's dangerous, man.” Rolling his eyes at his twin, Sora finally swallowed and pulled himself up from the table, grabbing his back pack. “At least I know how to think. But, I guess just like any other muscle in your body, your brain can akrofeed if you don't use it enough. Too bad, little brother.” Puffing up a little at the jab at their miniscule age difference, Roxas snatched up Sora's glass of juice, downing it. “It's 'atrophy', and your brain isn't a muscle, it's a neuro-organ.” Roxas corrected after he sighed happily. He loved the tang of orange-pineapple juice. Sora just shrugged, slipping his bag over one shoulder. Both of the boys were glad to be going to a regular public high school. Auron had tried to convince them that the boys academy would have been better, but Sora had gone to an all boys catholic school for most of his life, and even when he'd moved in with his dad and brother, still it had been a private school. Of course, getting kicked out, and then their dads work being reassigned... Things had lined up perfectly for them to go to a regular school for their last year. Both were seniors now, and aside from the idea of being new in a town at the end of their high school career, the twins were looking forward to one thing, and one thing alone. No. More. Uniforms. Sora had been so happy, he'd even joked about showing up naked and claiming to belong to a nudist colony. But of course, he'd opted for the less hilarious option of wearing clothes. His baggy cargo shorts were new, and a dark navy blue. They were covered in zippers and more pockets then he had things to put in them. His t shirt was a deep vibrant red, his favorite color in fact, and he had on a light, short sleeved jacket over top, a plain black with a large white outline embroidered on the back, in the shape of a crown. Roxas, on the other hand, was set on his normal clothes. Baggy grey pants and a black and white t-shirt. Of the two of them, Roxas didn't like to dress up as much, but then, he'd had a whole life time to do so, and Sora had never had much of what one would consider a versatile wardrobe until the last handful of years. He liked to take advantage of that. “Are you two sure you don't want me to drive you. It's on my wa-” “No Dad.” The twins replied in identically deadpanned tones, with flat expressions on their faces. “It isn't on your way, so stop saying that.” Sora pointed out with a frown, already slipping his feet into his slightly too big shoes. “And besides, we live like not even two blocks away. It won't hurt us to glide over.” Roxas completed their thought, even as he finished chewing and swallowing a piece of toast, moving across the kitchen to where his brother waited for him. By glide, the blond teen referred to their skateboards. Both of them loved to ride, and it was usually their preferred method of travel. Even though Auron had gotten a spare car just for them to use. Both boys were licensed, and while Sora was the more responsible driver of the two of them, Roxas was the better driver, in terms of 'technique'. And it was that 'technique' that had them grounded from the car all summer, and through the rest of that month of September. Shaking his head a bit, and leaning back in his seat, Newspaper drooping over his coffee mug, Auron gave in. “Alright, I'll stop nagging. Go on. Oh... And boys.... Lets try not to get in trouble on the first day, okay? Okay, great. Glad we understand each other.” Rolling his eyes, Sora accepted his worn out skateboard from his brother who had plucked them both up in wait, and led the way out of their house, and into the world... OoO0OoO “Ahh man I'm getting nervous.” Sora admitted as he used his foot to push himself for a bit more momentum on the skateboard he rode on beside his brother. Roxas was quiet for a moment, sighing as he gave a spare kick as well, jerking a little as they hopped off of the curb to cross the intersection. “Yeah I guess I am too. But it'll be okay. You love attention, so you'll be right at home as the new kid again.” The blond replied, just barely stopping short as a car whipped around the corner, almost hitting him and Sora. It had been instinct and reflex that made him snap his hand out to grab his brothers arm, but the brunette had already stopped, thanks to the horn that was blaring from the car in warning. “WATCH IT, SUCKEEEEERRRR!” Came a voice from the car. All the boys could make out was a head that had been peaked out of the passenger window, silver hair fluttering around. Roxas couldn't make out a face, and a flippant middle finger directed at them. And of course, to his dismay, the car pulled into the student parking lot that was just feet away. “.... Well that's as much of an omen as I've ever seen.” The blond mumbled, starting to ride again once another car, much more politely, honked at them to get out of the cross walk where they'd been stalled. “Aww relax bro. The world is full of jerks and tools. I didn't think this school would be an exception to that.” Sora encouraged, offering his usual grin. It wasn't too much further before they reached the front of the school, the entrance set back in the midst of a massive courtyard that was packed full of teens putting off going in to class. It was easy to spot the clicks and social levels. Freshman huddled together close with friends from Middle School, and the Seniors were loud and rambunctious for the most part. Obviously eager to leave an impression on the school for their last year. And then there was everyone In between, catching up with friends they'd missed over the summer. Milling through the masses, skateboards tucked under each boys respective left arm, Sora and Roxas made their way inside, to the office to check in. “Excuse me... Miss.....” Sora piped up after he and his brother had waited at the counter for a handful of awkwardly silent moment. Perking up from behind the desk, a beautiful brunette looked up. She seemed pretty young. But obviously an adult. “Oh, yes, hello? What can I do for you?” The lanyard around her neck had her school ID badge, her picture and name. “Uhh... Miss Lockheart? We're new transfers, and just.... a bit confused.” Roxas said, a bit quiet. Deep brown eyes blinked up at the two. “About what, boys?” She asked patiently. Sora laughed a little, realizing that his brother had been a bit vague. “We're not sure where we're supposed to go to get our schedules.” He explained quickly, rubbing a hand over his hair that smoothed for just a moment, before popping back up happily. “Ahhh!” Tifa replied, with a laugh of her own and nodded. “No worries.” She added, standing up and walking over to one of the large windows that looked out to the cafeteria. “You'll want to go into this room over here, and there are tables in the back where they're handing out class schedules to all students who couldn't make it to orientation. They have school maps too, if you need one. Oh I see you guys have skateboards... The school requires you to live skateboards, scooters, and rollerblades here in the main office. There's a wall of lockers over their you can put them in.” She explained, coming back to sit down. “Right. Great. Thank you Miss Lockheart!” Sora exclaimed, waving a bit before hooking his arm through his brothers and dragging Roxas to put their rides away for the day, and head out of the office and around the corner into the massive crowd in the cafeteria. “Shit.... This is a pretty big school...” Roxas mumbled, looking around wide eyed. Some of the students around, that seemed like they'd been going there for a while stared at the new kids, who were obviously not freshman. Neither Sora or Roxas were incredibly tall or masculine like many of the senior boys who'd gone through a growth spurt over the summer. In fact, they were barely taller than most of the girls, at 5'8 and a half. But they didn't have that nervous/terrified look that the shy freshman always had. Hey... Who are they?....The blond ones pretty cute... I don't think I've seen those two before.... I like the brunette, he's got a really nice smile... Do you think they're brothers?.... They look a lot a like... There were a lot of hushed whispers all around, and Sora seemed to absorb and enjoy them, while Roxas just blushed and ducked his head, getting in line with the other boy so they could find out their schedules. “Move it dweeb.” A blunt voice ordered. Before Roxas could register and react to it, or even locate who had said it, a body roughly shoved the blond out of the way, and right into the back of the guy standing in front of them. “HEY! JERK! APOLOGIZE FOR THAT!” Sora called out angrily, suddenly standing in a slightly hunched, defensive position, one fist clenched at his side. He could only see the guys back as he continued walking away, a hand raised to wave nonchalantly, laughter accompanied. Whoever it was had a black hood drawn up over his head, from his sweater, so Sora couldn't even tell what color his hair was. He wouldn't forget that voice though, he made sure of it. “You trying to pick a fight, kid?” Came a sly voice, Roxas quickly trying to right himself so he wouldn't have to clutch at the person anymore. Sora was back at his side and helping, so Roxas finally was able to step back, blushing. “...Sorry man.” He said quietly, looking up at the boy he'd practically assaulted just now through his dusty blond eyelashes. Looking up as well, Sora noticed the kid was about their age, a blond guy with some kind of spikey mullety mohawk thing, and green eyes. His friend beside him had silver hair, cropped in an a-line which hung in his face a bit. “Ehh.... Don't worry about it. Xaldin's an asshole.” The blond said with a shrug, his words confirmed with a small smirk and a nod from his companion. “You can say that again. You guys are new, aren't you? This is the line for seniors.” the silver haired boy said, his voice a bit dispassionate as he pointed over at the next line over. “Those are for the underclassman.” “So that guys name is Xaldin? Thanks, I'll remember that.” Sora said, his hands folding up behind his head as he relaxed his stands. Roxas glanced over where the guy was pointing and shrugged. “Yeah I read the signs. This is the line we need. We're both seniors.” The blond youth replied, hands burried into his pockets. The two taller boys traded surprised looks. “Yeah, I know we're short, we look young, yadda yadda.” Sora said with a cheesy grin and laugh, beating them to the punch. “Lucky huh? We'll look real good when we're like, 40, probably.” At that, the taller blond laughed and shook his head. “You guys are pretty weird. I'm Demyx. This is Zexion. Did you guys just move here to Twilight Town?” Shrugging a little, Roxas nodded. “Yeah. Our dad got transferred for work.” He replied, glancing at his brother. Sora was always better at the public speaking thing, but Roxas didn't really hate it. He just never really knew what to say. “Oh? Where from?” Zexion asked, even as they all shuffled forward a bit, the line inching forward all the time. “Hollow Bastion.” Sora answered cheerfully. The silver haired teen looked surprised. “Oh? I've got family over there. Did you guys live there long?” He implored further, actually a little intrigued with these strange new guys. “Roxas was raised there. I grew up over on Destiny Islands though. I was only in Hollow Bastion the last 4 years, really.” Demyx cocked his head, looking a little confused. “But you guys are brothers?” “Yup. Twins.” “Wait wait wait.... Aren't twins supposed to look exactly alike?” Demyx asked, looking lost. Sighing and pinching the bridge of his nose a little, Zexion shook his head. “They're fraternal, you idiot. Only identical twins are identical. How did you make it to being a senior? I swear....” “Awww Zexy! I'm not an idiot! Why are you so mean to me all the time?” Demyx whined a bit, looking up at his friend who was still shaking his head, hand pressed to his temple like tolerating this boy gave him a headache. Out of nowhere, Sora laughed heartily, leaning on his brother a bit, eyes creased. Both of the bigger teens looked at him questioningly. “You guys must be really good friends, huh? That's great. I'm glad we met you two. Now I have some hope that maybe we can make some good friends too. Right Roxas?” Sora said, his voice full and exuberant as he spoke, blue eyes glinting. Both Demyx and Zexion were a little lost for words. They hadn't been expecting to be praised for their friendship. The silver haired male was even blushing a little. Roxas just smiled, a mirror of his brothers, and nodded. “Mm. Yeah, Sora, me too.” He agreed. Sighing a bit, and letting his shoulders sag, Demyx shrugged a little. “You guys are a little weird, but it's okay. You can hang out with us until you find those good friends you're looking for. I'd feel bad if you got the crap kicked out of you for saying weird stuff to the wrong people, ya know?” He said, Zexion nodding a little that he was okay with it too, before he leaned in and gave his name to the person sorting through the class schedules, receiving his papers and moving out of the line to wait for Demyx. When it was their turn, Sora took the lead, leaning on the table. “Sora and Roxas Gearheart, please!” OoO0OoO Rain was pattering all around, but that didn't bother the 4 teens too much. They were standing under the cover outside of the school, waiting for the bell to ring to tell them to go to class. “C'mon Roxas. You don't hafta lie to us. We already like you plenty. You don't need to make up some story about a long lost twin brother to be cool and whatever.” Getting angry, Roxas puffed up a little, fists clenched at his side. “I'm not lying!” He exclaimed. “Calm down, man. Why are you getting so angry?” “Because you're calling me a liar.” He retorted, crossing his arms over his chest. He'd been trying to convince his friends of the new development that had occurred over the weekend. Sora wasn't supposed to start at school with them for another week, so he couldn't just give them the proof it seemed they needed. “Well can ya blame us? It's pretty unbelievable Rox. That's like Oprah level shit.” Dewey said with a shrug. “Hey, Roxas... isn't that your dads car?” Huey pointed out. Indeed, his fathers silver car had just rolled up into the circular drive through in front of the school, parking. His dad climbed out of the drivers side. “Huh... yeah... weird....” The three brothers that made up his friends had all turned, while Roxas walked over towards the car tentatively. He didn't make it too far before a smaller figure bolted out of the passenger side door, to latch onto Roxas. It took a moment before the blond realized it was his brother, and he sighed, hugging back for a moment before pushing the brunette away. Auron had come around and shut the passenger door that had been left open in Sora's excitement. “What are you guys doing here?” He asked in confusion. “I couldn't wait! I begged Dad to bring me today to do the paper work. He wanted to give me more time to settle in but-” “But your brother was driving me up a wall.” Auron said gruffly as he approached, and then started to walk past them. Sora laughed a little, shrugging and smiling apologetically. “I was really bored, and lonely, I didn't like being away from you is all.” He admitted. Blushing a little, Roxas sighed and shook his head. “Well... You have great timing anyway. C'mon.” While Auron walked into the school to start up the paperwork for enrollment,Roxas dragged Sora over to introduce him to his friends, a smug, 'told-ya-so' grin on his face when he saw that shocked looks on the three boys faces. A/N: Yes, I turned Huey, Dewey, and Louie into human characters, because it tickles me pink. I'll draw some fanart of them later. Speaking of which, I'll be doing quite a bit of art for this fic, and links will be labeled clearly, and posted on my profile page, and eventually I may start up a Y! Gallery, I dunno. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed it. I'll try to get out chapter 4 tonight too, but I'll also be updating older stories that have been on hiatus as well. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
