"Meeting is the beginning of parting." Japanese Proverb "It's in the clouds! Dragon!" The crowd shouted, the Headsman fell and suddenly the dragon emitted a sound that made the earth shake. "Don't just stand there! Kill that thing! Guards get the town people to safety!" The General screamed a few more words but Slava didn't hear half of what he said. She just stood up; feeling rather dizzy for some reason and tried to focus her eyes on the ground for her vision was also quite blurry for no reason. "Hey, Slava! Get up! Come on, the gods won't give us another chance!" Ralof called, Slava focused on a blonde figure ducked in front of her. She walked to him, trying not to lose her balance and wondering what on Nirn had just happened to her. "This way!" Ralof said while starting to run, Slava followed him as fast as she could and was almost fit by some falling stones in the process. They ran to a tower, inside the building her vision seemed to be much clearer, but the dizziness still bothered her. "Jarl Ulfric! What is that thing? Could the legends be true?" Ralof asked to his leader. "Legends don't burn down villages." Jarl Ulfric replied with a deep voice. "We need to move. Now!" He changed the subject. "Up through the tower! Let's go!" Ralof said, Slava was now almost recovered from the dizziness in her head and the blurriness of her vision. Whatever hit her was fading away rather quick. "Up through the tower? What do you expect finding there?" She asked. "Do you have a better idea?" He asked. "No." She shrugged. "After you." Ralof started running and Slava and Ulfric followed him. She could hear the panic and chaos outside, the noise of the dragon frightened her a little but not as nearly as it normally would for Slava had just faced her own death. She looked down and noticed something that she hadn't seen at first – some men taking care of injured Stormcloaks. Staying to help the injured while most men were running for their lives was quite brave of them. After they climbed quite a few steps they found another Stormcloak who had already made it up there. "We just need to move some of these rocks to clear the way!" He said, Slava and Ralof were about to start helping him when the wall suddenly exploded and the dragon immerged from the other side. "Get back!" Ralof shouted, Slava ducked behind the wall and watched the dragon pulverize the Stormcloak soldier with fire. She had the feeling that the dragon had said something while breathing fire, but Slava didn't give it any importance. It had been quite an impressive day after all and her mind was probably starting to imagine things. Once the dragon was gone, Ralof and Slava cautiously climbed up the remaining steps of the stairs to the huge gap that the dragon had just created. "See the inn on the other side? Jump through the roof and keep going!" Ralof said, pointing to the inn. It was a high jump, but not high enough to kill her. Slava just needed a good landing, twisting her foot now would be the death of her. "Go! We'll follow when we can!" Ralof shouted while Slava was in the air, she soon landed on the inn and fell on her knees with her weight. In the end, the jump was much higher than it looked. Slava got up and continued to run to the other side; she found a hole on the floor and jumped to the ground. The town was completely destroyed. "Haming, get over here!" A familiar voice said. "Haming, you need to get over here now!" Slava saw the Imperial Officer that was trying to be kind to her when she was about to be executed. He was now trying to save a little boy that stood carelessly in the middle of the road. The dragon suddenly flew behind the boy and everyone took cover behind a building while the dragon was breathing fire. Slava didn't see Ralof behind her, so she decided to follow them for now. "Still alive, prisoner? Keep close to be if you want to stay that way." The Legion Officer said. Slava almost laughed but did as he told. "Gunnar, take care of the boy. I have to find General Tullius and join the defense." When Slava heard him proffering these words, she knew that she wouldn't be safe around him. General Tullius could remember her now; he was someone to be avoided at all costs. "Gods guide you, Hadvar." The man said before Hadvar started to run, Slava decided to follow him for now. "Stay close to the wall!" He shouted to her while the dragon was landing on the wall he mentioned. Slava looked up and tried not to move an inch while the dragon burned the house in front of them. She had again that feeling that the creature said something, yet she wasn't sure. All this was very confusing to her. "Quickly! Follow me!" Hadvar said again, she did as he told and heard the Imperial soldiers fight in the distance. Slava turned her head to them for a few seconds before Hadvar told her. "It's you and me prisoner. Stay close." That captured again her attention and she followed Hadvar until they met Ralof again. When they stopped, Slava noticed that her skin was different; Slava had the feeling that her back had been burned in the middle of that chaos. The pain bothered her but it wasn't unbearable yet. "Ralof! You damn traitor! Out of my way!" Hadvar screamed. "We're escaping, Hadvar. You're not stopping us this time!" Ralof replied. "Fine. I hope that dragon takes you all to Sovngarde." The Legion Officer muttered. "You! Come on! Into the keep!" Ralof called Slava, Hadvar called her as well, but she wanted to live without fear and Ralof was the right option for now. As least she was sure that he hated the Thalmor as much as she did. "I'm sorry!" She screamed at Hadvar before following Ralof and entering the keep. "You have made the right choice." Ralof said with a smile while closing the door, his expression soon changed when he saw a fellow Stormcloak lying on a pool of blood. "We'll meet again on Sovngarde, brother." He whispered after checking the dead man's pulse. "Looks like we're the only ones who made it." Ralof said while looking up to me. "Yeah, probably. It was crazy out there." Slava replied. "That thing was a dragon. No doubt. Just like the children's stories and the legends. The harbingers of the End of the Times... Well, we better get moving. Come here. Let me see if I can get those biddings off." Ralof said while grabbing her biddings and releasing with his dagger. "There you go. You may as well take Gunjar's gear. He won't be needing it anymore. Your name is Slava, right?" He asked. "Yes, Ralof. Nice to meet you, by the way." Slava nodded with a small smile, she quickly removed the dead body's gear and put it on. "Likewise. Guess we got lucky today, eh? Give that axe a few swings, I hope you're used to big weapons." He paused. "People from Cyrodiil are usually pussies but you don't look like one." Ralof noted while Slava tried her new axe. "Most Nords stay true to the traditions in Cyrodiil. The Imperials are the pussies." The woman replied. "Good." Ralof smiled. "I'm going to see if I can find some way out of here." He examined the door for a few moments before muttering. "This one is locked. Let me see about that gate." They both walked to the opposite direction of the circular room. The Dragon's noises could still be heard quite inside the building. "Damn. No way to open this from our side..." His words were interrupted by a female voice, possibly by that annoying Imperial Captain that insisted to kill Slava like she was a rebel. "It's the Imperials. Take cover!" Ralof whispered, Slava stood close to a wall next to the door, gripping her axe tightly. "Get this gate open." She said in her usual bossy tone before being able to walk in their room. "For the sons of Skyrim!" Ralof said as soon as they were able to see the Imperials' figure, weapons were unsheathed and soon the environment was filled with the metallic noises of a fight. Slava attacked the woman first, unconsciously wanting revenge. She brushed her Imperial sword to the side and pushed the Captain against the wall. "Is that your best?" The Imperial mocked, Slava swung her axe towards the Captain's chest but she wasn't successful at first. It took a second strike, this time aiming to her neck, to kill the woman. She chocked in her own blood with her head half-cut. "There you go, bitch." Slava spat on the Captain's dying body before raising her look to Ralof, who had already taken care of the soldier that was accompanying her. He watched her attitude curiously, but did not seem to find it distasteful. "Maybe one of these Imperials had the key." He suggested. Both Nords started to search the bodies, it did not take them long to find a key and unlock the other door. "That's it! Come on, let's get out of here before the dragon brings the whole tower down on our heads." Ralof said, they both hurried downstairs but had soon their path blocked by falling stones. "Damn, that dragon doesn't give up easily." He muttered. "Well, he's been sleeping for thousands of years, right? He must me hungry." Slava shrugged. "Let's use this door." She suggested, her fingers grabbed her axe again while she was opening it. Slava could hear someone talking. "Death to the Empire!" Ralof shouted again as soon as he saw the Imperials, craving his axe on the soldier's chest. Slava took care of the other one by slashing his stomach. After taking care of those soldiers, they left the room and went to a lower and darker level. "Troll's blood!" Ralof gasped. "It's a torture room!" They paused again for a moment, Slava had the impression that it wasn't the first torture room that Ralof had seen. "Did you hear that? Someone is fighting in there, let's go!" Slava whispered, when they arrived in the room there were two Imperials trying to kill a Stormcloak woman. Ralof and Slava charged against the Imperials and the three of them took care of the problem rather quickly. "Was Jarl Ulfric with you?" Ralof asked her. "No, I haven't seen him since the dragon showed up." The soldier answered. "Hm, let's move then." The three Nords left the room and hurried through a small corridor filled with cells on its sides, they soon reached a room with skeletons in cages and with the floor stained with blood. Slava's attention was directed to that horrible show before they found a huge hole on the wall. Maybe there was hope of escaping after all. The hole leaded to some kind of cave, it was humid and the floor was slippery, yet the torches lightning the way definitely helped them to find their path. It did not take long for them to find Imperials again, this time in greater number. "I'll keep watch in case Ulfric comes through here. Talos guide both of you." The woman said as soon as the Imperials were taken care of. Ralof nodded and the two of them kept going through the cavern. They crossed a wooden bridge to the other side of the cavern; there was a water fall and a small river. "Can't actually believe that there's a small chance for us to get outta here alive." Slava said. "Even though I don't really know what I am going to do next." She confessed. "Didn't you have plans when you came back here? Family waiting? A job, perhaps? Or were you just looking for adventure?" Ralof asked. "No, I don't really have anything and now the Legion might be after me, so…" She shrugged. The Thalmor were after Beatrix, the Empire was after Slava. She was running out of names but she was lucky enough that none of them really knew her face. "Oh, don't worry about them. It wasn't you they wanted – they wanted us." Ralof replied. "Just lay low for a while and things will be okay for you." He advised. "Yeah, hope so." Slava nodded. "It's hard to stay alive in these difficult times." "Trust me, I know." Ralof muttered more to himself. "What? This wasn't your first execution?" Slava asked surprised. "Actually, it was not." He smiled. "In my first execution we were rescued by our own people, needless to say that Jarl Ulfric wasn't there and there weren't so many Imperials." Ralof explained while going down a tunnel. "Then the gods surely do like… WATCH OUT! SPIDERS!" The two Nords found themselves to be suddenly surrounded by at least five giant spiders, some bigger than others but all of them starving for some fresh human meat. The battle was quick, but horrifying. In the end Slava had pieces of webs in her fingers, clothes and face. "Hate these things, too many eyes, you know?" Ralof commented. "Ugh, too many legs…" She added, feeling a bit nauseous. Slava had no trouble with Trolls, Ogres, Minotaurs, Wraiths, Ghosts, wild animals, Giants and so on, but the Undead and Spiders made her cringe. They continued their way until they found a Bear sleeping on the next section of the cave. "I'd rather not tangle with her right now. Let's try to sneak by. Just take it nice and slow and watch where you step." Ralof whispered to Slava, she nodded. "Yeah, agreed." Sneaking past the bear certainly took them longer than killing it, but Slava had her share of fight for the day. She honestly just wanted to pass out in a warm bed or… anywhere as long as it was safe, really. They took their time with the bear, but at least they were still breathing. For now. Once the bear wasn't a problem, they found themselves carelessly running through the cavern. It only had one way and the air wasn't as thick now. There was silence between the two Nords, but it wasn't heavy or awkward, it was rather the expectation of seeing the sunlight again. It did not take long for them to see a glimpse from the outside, something shining in the distance. They were free. "That looks like the way out! I knew we'd made it!" Ralof said excitedly. They both rushed outside, Slava was faster than him – too fast actually. "Wait!" He cried while grabbing her arm and pushing her to him. The dragon that attacked Helgen flew right above them, but didn't seem to see the two careless mortals. Ralof and Slava waited to see him disappear in the distance. "There he goes. Looks like he's gone for good this time." Ralof said. "No way to know if anyone else made out alive. But this place is going to be swarming with Imperials soon enough. We better clear out of here." He suggested. "You're right." Slava nodded. "Should we go on separate paths or stay together?" "Well, my sister, Gerdur, runs the mill in Riverwood, just down the road. I'm sure she'd help you out." Ralof said and started walking. "Yeah, that would be good. Thanks." She gave him small smile. "No problem, lass." He nodded, speeding his pace. "You know… You should go to Windhelm and join the fight for free Skyrim. You've seen the true face of the Empire here today. Bet they don't act like this in Cyrodiil." Ralof suggested. "Eh, there are nice Imperials back in Cyrodiil, but some are quite arrogant. Same with High Elves, I guess." She noted. "But I will consider joining your cause." "I only know this – if anyone knows what the coming of the dragon means, it's Ulfric." Ralof told her. "That thing surely looked like it came from our worst nightmares." Slava wrinkled her nose. She took her time to look around and to see her surroundings. As expected, Skyrim had quite a few mountains and was mostly rocky and snowy, still, there trees and flowers that resisted the cold and the harsh environment. Slava would miss her green and fertile Cyrodiil, but she was finding Skyrim much more intriguing – probably because she barely explored it. "See that ruin up there?" Radolf broke her line of thought. "Bleak Falls Barrow. I never understood how my sister could stand living in the shadow of that place." "What's in there?" She asked curiously. "I don't know. Bandits, Draugr, Ghosts... It's an evil place and that's enough for me to know." He shrugged. "Draugr? What's that?" she asked. "Draugr are ancient Nordic warriors who rise again if disturbed. You don't have those in Cyrodiil? They are not a pretty sight." She shook her head in his response. More Undead, how charming. They kept their way down that small hill, heading towards a river. Slava was too distracted with the environment to say anything, she found her ancestors land rough but fascinating. "Slava, are you listening to me?" Rolaf asked. "Err… no, sorry." She apologized. "I was just saying that this isn't Stomcloak territory. If we're ahead of the news from Helgen we should be fine unless we do anything stupid." He told her and Slava nodded." If we run into any Imperials, just let me do the talking, all right?" "Right." She answered. The Nord knew much more about the war than Slava did, after all and she did not wanted to be made prisoner again. Radolf was the only person she could rely on for now.
