The familiar towering walls of the capital were a welcome sight. As the pair approached the massive fortifications, Kanen felt a happy warmth in his gut. For the first time in the last 24 hours, things actually felt right. Nothing would ever compare to the safety of home.
They were stopped several dozen yards short of the gate by a handful of armored guards, armed with deadly looking spears. “State your name and your business in the city.” One said gruffly. Kanen blinked. Apparently the city watch had become more cautious in his time away. “My name is Kanen Erro, and Demacia is my home.”
The guards looked at each other. “Never heard of you. If you’re a Demacian, where’s your permit to leave the city? Why don’t we have you on the list of citizens returning this month?” He looked over at Ahri. “And why did you drag this creature back to us? I thought the deal was that it stayed in the forest.”
“Wait, what? Since when do the citizens need permission to leave the city?” The men pointed their weapons at him threateningly. “It’s been that way for years boy, and if you don’t know that, Demacia certainly ain’t your home. Now take that creature and get out before we have to make things messy here.”
Ahri took a few steps forward on two legs, appearing as human as possible. “Lux want to see him. Don’t want disappoint Lux yes?” Her speech was choppy, but it did its job. The captain glanced at the man to his right, who shrugged. He growled in frustration, but lowered his weapon. “Alright fine. We’ll take you to see Lux, but you best behave yourselves. And if the Lieutenant doesn’t want to see you, you can be sure you won’t ever see the city ever again.”
Without pausing, the captain turned and walked back to the gate, nodding to man to the side. That man proceeded to raise his arm and yell: “Excelsior. Gate up.” A resounding click answered him, followed by the sound of large gears churning, lifting the metal barrier. As soon there was enough room to travel underneath, the captain ducked his head and walked through, not even bothering to look back. Ahri dexterously dipped her waist and trotted behind while Kanen crouched slightly and followed.
He was surprised that the captain, who had just minutes before tried to barr them entry, was giving them so much room to follow, but he quickly realized that there were 4 more guards making up the rear of the group. He sighed, absent-mindedly wondering what had happened to his home, but obediently followed the impatient captain. He lead them quickly through some busy streets that seemed darker than he remembered, then finally up a flight of stairs to a building he was sure hadn’t existed in his last visit. The guard stopped suddenly outside an important looking door, then angrily glanced at the pair of visitors, silently warning them to stay put.
The captain took a deep breath, then pushed the door open. “Lieutenant, the creature is back. This time with some stranger that claims to be Demacian. The creature claims that you wish to speak to him, but I don’t see why you would. Since you’re busy I can have them remov-”
A strong feminine voice interrupted him sternly. “That won’t be necessary captain. Please send them in and return to your post. And captain” She added, with some venom in her voice. “Do not call Ahri a creature or I’ll let her eat you.” The guard stammered for a moment before apologizing. He quickly exited the room and frustratedly gestured them to the inside.
It was, for lack of a better word, a war room. Maps detailing the terrain of Valoran were scattered around on the walls, with circles, markings and pins covering different portions. In the center was an enormous walnut table that was simply covered with papers, large and small. Around the table was a small band of recognizable figures, clad in unfamiliar armor. Xin Zhao was standing off to the right, wearing full body armor that was a deep blue color, his trusty spear leaning against the wall behind him.
Quinn was leaning over the table, her sharp green eyes boring into him, making him feel more than a bit uncomfortable. Her normal light armor had been traded for a more traditional set of plate, still the traditional Demacian blue. But most surprisingly, in the center was Lux. But her usual light, happy features were absent. In their place was a cold, hard expression. A soldier’s face.
She raised an armored hand to them, beckoning them forward. Her heavy grey armor clashed harshly with her reputation. The suit added at least an inch to her height, and filled around her, hiding her thin body underneath. Even her baton had changed. It seemed to crackle with electricity as it rested on the ground.
She clucked her tongue impatiently as Kanen and Ahri crossed the room to the ground. “So what is so important that you tied up a squad of our city watch and interrupted a meeting Ahri?” Lux asked, almost angrily. Ahri looked over at Kanen, encouraging him to speak in her place. “Um...My name is Kanen. I’m not going to lie, I have absolutely no fucking idea what’s going on.”
The group around the table shared a look. “What do you mean?” Xin asked, curiosity evident in his voice. “What do I mean? Everything. Why the hell the guards weren’t going to let me into the city. Why we needed an armed guard. Why Ahri was out wandering the forest. Why you’re all here instead of at the League of Legends, which, by the way, has completely disappeared. Someone want to explain this to me?”
There was a long awkward silence in the room, as everyone absorbed his words. Quinn was the first to speak. “What is the League of Legends?” Kanen gaped at her, at a loss for words. “I...I need to sit down.” He spotted a chair to the side of the room, and quickly strode over and collapsed into it.
Lux turned to Ahri. “You found him in the forest?” The fox nodded. “Why did you bring him here?” Ahri gestured with her hands, trying to form the words. “His essence different. Like...doesn’t belong here. Smell not from here.” Lux furrowed her brow. “You mean not from Demacia?” Ahri shook her head. “No, not from here at all.”
As the pair talked, Kanen looked around the room, too many thoughts swimming around in his head to make sense of them. Suddenly, he had a realization. “Wait, if this is a war meeting, where is Jarvan?” Xin cocked an eyebrow at him. “The king is in the palace. We’ll take our plans to him once they’re finalized.” Kanen shook his head. “No no no, not the king, Jarvan the Fourth. Shouldn’t he be here too?”
Everyone in the room stiffened suddenly. Quinn hissed guardedly “Do you know the whereabouts of Prince Jarvan? Because if you do, you have 5 seconds to share.” Seeing Kanen’s confused expression, Lux walked over and kneeled next to him. “Prince Jarvan has been missing for 4 years now. He ventured north and we have not heard from him since. Trust me, if we knew where he was, he would be in this room.”
Xin was the next to break the silence. “There is something off about you boy. I think it would be best if you told us your story. All of it. Starting first, what is this ‘League of Legends’?”
Kanen took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. Finally, he spoke. “Not too long ago, a coalition of powerful magicians created an organization to resolve conflicts in Valoran in an organized and controlled manner. Their solution was called the League of Legends...”

“...but before I could get back inside, the hole closed. I did the first thing I could think of, and headed west to Demacia for help figuring out what the hell happened. I ran into Ahri” He said, gesturing to the fox girl. “And she helped lead me here. That’s basically all of it. I don’t understand any of it, but at this point I’m kind of hoping it’s all an awful dream.”
Quinn snorted. “You’ve got my word, it isn’t a dream.” Xin and Lux nodded solemnly. “Well that’s fantastic. So what’s next?” He asked sarcastically. Lux sighed “Well, Demacia is at war, Noxus has taken control of Ionia, and by now they’ve probably finished their conquest of Piltover.” Kanen nodded his head sarcastically. “Oh, is that all? Here I was thinking the sky was falling.” The light mage ignored his remark. “Garen is leading the troops in the west, but they reached a stalemate and couldn’t move to help defend Piltover in time. But we’re operating on old information. It’s possible that they got tied up, or that the city is offering more resistance than expected. Either way, we need to know what’s going on over there.”
“I don’t think Jayce and Ziggs will go down without a huge fight.” Kanen said, mostly to himself. “Who?” He shook his head. “Nevermind.”
Kanen nodded slowly, not understanding where she was going with this. Lux continued. “I think I might know what happened to you. Your bolter is being powered by hextech fields right?” Kanen nodded. “I think you the fields overcharged and opened a tear between the fabric dividing different universes.” Kanen blinked. “Huh?” Xin and Quinn concurred with him.
“There are infinite many different universes coexisting at the same time. During my training at the College of Magic, I accidentally looked into some of the alternate universes when I misused my spells. But I’ve never heard of actually creating holes that connect them. Either way, there’s probably only one person I know of in Valoran that can give you a more definitive answer, and he’s in Piltover.” Kanen nodded in understanding. “Heimerdinger.”
“Bingo. And like I said, it just so happens that we need someone to scout the situation in the city and report back to us.” Before she could finish, Kanen interrupted. “Woah woah, you think I’M more qualified to sneak past armies and scout for you? Isn’t that basically all Quinn does?” Xin answered. “They have spies everywhere. They have been watching all of us like hawks ever since the conflict began. Quinn can hardly move without the entirety of Noxus knowing about it.”
“And what makes you think they won’t catch onto me the second I leave the city?” Quinn smirked as she responded. “Simple. We kick you out on your ass. Like you yourself said, nobody here knows who you are, and if they see you get thrown out, they’ll assume we want nothing to do with you.” He certainly did not like where this was going.
A wannabe League champion whose only accomplishments thus far were talking his way into the Institute of War and building a faulty weapon that threw him into another dimension was not the guy you want to handle important missions. Not the guy you want to base your war strategy off of.
Xin tried to reassure him. “If Noxus does not know you’re an enemy, you should have nothing to fear. We’re not asking you to fight them, just for information. And honestly young Kanen,” He said, his voice grave. “This might be our only chance.”
He looked frantically from face to face, searching for a way out, for somebody to point out that he couldn’t do it. To say that resting the hopes of Demacia on a stranger was folly. To agree he was not up to the task. To admit this was a bad plan.
