Disclaimer: I do not own any Characters from Legend of Zelda, I make no money off this story, and only borrow the Wolfos species to entertain my boring self. |
Running through the lost woods, once a safe haven for those born of monsters such as myself, I am once more assaulted by memories of my own past. Long before I came to terms with my human form being robbed from me and replaced with the hideous form of a feral beast, I ran from my King. I suppose it was only natural that I would come and hide in such a dreadful place.
The lost woods were known to all the creatures of Hyrule, and legends of children straying into the labyrinth forest only to lose themselves and turn into the mysterious Skull Kids were rampant even among the youth of the Gerudo Valley. I had grown up hearing about how I must never stray into the forest, or I should fear for my very soul. When I was first turned into the pioneer of the Wolfos breed, this was hardly a thought in my mind. I was already a monster, the worst going into the forest could do was kill me at this point. I ended up in hiding, I managed to wander around in that goddess forsaken maze of a forest for weeks, no doubt terrifying my Master and King beyond what sanity should allow him to feel, until I reached a clearing. There were tiny plant creatures that shot seeds like bullets at me, and after avoiding them, I was confronted with a beautiful creature. This I imagine, was the first Golden Wolfos I had ever encountered, and when he approached me, I heard him speak as if it were plain human language.
"Little One, chosen by Twinrova to guard the Evil One, You stand before me in this form, the Wolfos. I am but a ghost, a phantom of times long past. If you allow it, your spirit shall allow you to become the mother of a new species." His words even now, as I stand beside the tree stump where I first saw him, and later saw a young green haired girl of the Kokiri tribe, echo within my ears. I had no idea what he was asking of me at first, nor do I know who that golden wolf was, but after that night, I was never the same again.
"You are aware, Wolfos, that your human form is lost to you now. Dark magic of the most sinister nature, lost to even the great sages has given you this form, and there is no cure." The golden Wolfos comments, his tail waving behind him like a metronome. I throw my own head back and howl with a pained note, knowing this was the case already, but not wanting to believe it so.
"My name is Xenri." I reply, unsure of whether or not my voice will even work, yet unwilling to relinquish that last bit of my humanity, the name my mother gave me. The golden wolf nods with understanding before rising to his feet and leading me to the edge of the cliff. My white pelt is suddenly brushed back by the cool breeze of the seemingly endless abyss, and I am aware we have moved from the forest where I first saw this creature.
"Howl with me Xenri. Let all of your sorrows, all your worries float away with our song." He speaks softly and his voice is comforting to me, I sit and tilt my head back, waiting for him to begin the song. I recognize the tune as the Requiem of Spirit, a song frequently used in the Gerudo Valley to celebrate, and to pray. Smiling at the golden wolf, I throw my head back and enthusiastically join in, my voice echoing off the hills into the night. With every clear note, I appreciate my form more and more, and my humanity slowly drains away, leaving a calm and peaceful feeling. As the song ends, I look back at where the Golden wolf was sitting, but find nobody. Furthermore, I am back in the Lost Woods, outside the broken down Forest Temple. Finally at peace with my being, and at no longer having a human body, I begin the journey back to Gerudo Valley, back to my home, and my King.
AN: I'm updating this literally as I write it, while I'm still focused enough to do so. This story has been sitting on my computer for months, collecting dust. I know the time changes, but for this story, italics mean that it's the Past, a flashback. Normal is present time.
