The continued Adventures of Hank this is the third one. It’s not crucial to read the first two but you can. Enjoy.
Showdown In The Wastes“Remind me never to help you again!” Hank cried over the gunfire.
“You’d miss it after a few days.” The Brotherhood of Steel member called back to him. They were pinned behind a fallen chunk of a building taking heavy fire from several super mutants with gatlings.
“Yeah gun fire whizzing by my head constant fear of being killed.”
“Gets your blood pumping don’t it?”
“Hell yeah! By the way where the hell is our backup?”
“She should be here any minute.”
“She. You mean Sarah?”
“That’s Sentinel Lyons to you.”
“Not me, I’m not a member of your brotherhood. I just help you out from time to time, which reminds me, never ask me again!” The Steel Member just grinned and shook his head the grin hidden by the helmet.
He was fully decked out in Power Armor and a Laser Rifle with a laser pistol sidearm. Hank in contrast was wearing his leather armor with a trench coat and shady hat, packing his Scoped .44 sidearm and his Xuanlong main. “Damn I hate being pinned.” Hank commented as he pulled out a grenade from his coat.
“As soon as it goes off roll to the side and open up, they will expect us to fire over the top it will throw them off.” He explained.
“You know I have done this before.”
“And you were lucky you weren’t cut in two then. I was there then too.” He tossed the grenade.
“BOOM!”
“ARRRGGG” cried one of the muties.
“Now” he shouted and rolled to the side. Quickly squeezing off three shot bursts aiming for their heads.
About six muties had been in the area Hank and the Knight were patrolling, how or why there were so many was a mystery, they had never come across more than four. It wouldn’t have been a problem but three had gatlings, two 5mm. and one laser, the others packing assault rifles. He saw one muties collapse into a pile of dust. The muties adapted quickly and locating them opening up with the gatlings. They rolled back into cover.
“We need to silence those.” Hank said.
“I was aiming at one, he moved.”
“They were on to us quick. If their heads weren’t so thick I could kill them faster.”
“There are always ifs.” The steel member replied. The whine of the gatling died. Silence.
“What the fuck?” Hank said looking at the confused Knight.
“You still alive over there?” he heard a voice call.
“What the fuck?” Hank peered cautiously over the top and saw Sarah Lyons and her pride standing on the ruins of the building that was right behind the muties, they didn’t even see it coming. “Our reinforcements have arrived.” Hank informed the Knight. The whine they heard die was the gatling laser of pride member. “Its about time.” Hank called out to Sarah.
“You’re just lucky we weren’t busy.” Sarah replied with a smirk.
“If I had brought my room sweeper we wouldn’t have needed help.” He said wishing he had brought his gatling, but it was cumbersome and if he hadn’t of needed it that’s extra weight.
Sarah and the pride came down to join them. “Where are you two headed anyway?”
“Home” Hank quickly answered glancing at the Knight he was traveling with.
“One little hitch and you’re running off?”
“One LITTLE hitch? That was SIX HUGE MUTIES I don’t call that a LITTLE hitch. That’s a big fucking problem! We where just going through the area we haven’t been able to get to before.” He replied to Sarah’s question. Hank walked over to the dead muties to inspect their weapons.
“We want those Hank.” Sarah called over her shoulder. “Damn I was going to use one.” Any other time he would have protested or just took one but with the full pride here he didn’t want to risk it. They were nice to him, but if he pissed them off they could make things difficult. He spied several grenades and started pocketing them.
“What did I just say?” she ask again.
“I’m not walking away from this with just a loss. I’m getting something.” He knew he could get away with a few grenades.
“Fine, you can have the grenades but we need the heavy arms-”
“Just the heavy arms?” he cut her off as he bent down to grab an assault rifle.
“Those too.” she quickly added. “Let’s go Vinny.” Hank called to the Knight.
“It’s Vince.” The Knight said annoyed.
“I know, now let’s go VINNY.”
“Sentinel.” Vince saluted Sarah. “Steel be with you.”
“Steel be with you.” She replied.
“You know you really should show her more respect.”
“Easy for you to say, you’re not freelance, I am. I’m really regretting stopping in to trade with Knight Captain Durga this morning. If only The Elder hadn’t seen me.” The last part he said low hoping Vince didn’t hear him. Never insult the Elder around any brotherhood unless you wanted to get shot. “Keep your eyes peeled I don’t want to be rescued again.” Hank said. “Here” he said handing a rag to Knight Vince.
“What do I want that for?” he asked.
“To wipe off your visor so you can SEE.” He just swatted it away as Hank laughed.
They hadn’t gone very far when they heard a very slow conversation. “We need more.”
“Me know.”
“We go get some?”
“Later, now we eat ones we have.”
“I wonder how many there are?” Vince inquired. Hank peeked over the top of the wall of rubble that blocked his view. He quickly came back down.
“So how many is it?” Vince asked.
“I don’t know can’t count that high.”
“What?”
“I lost count at about thirty.”
Thirty!”
“SHHH, they aren’t exactly deaf you know. Let’s get the hell out of here. I can mark this place in the Pip-Boy and you can lead Sarah and the others back here another time, but for now let’s go while the goings good.” Hank finished.
“If we hurry we can catch up with her and the others.” Vince said thinking they could eliminate the problem now.
“I’d rather not get involved in that, I don’t mind killing the muties groups here and there three to four at a time but plus thirty is fucking nuts? You know even with the full Brotherhood here I wouldn’t feel sure of victory.”
“Let’s head back to the Citadel and see what we can do about getting the full Brotherhood.” Vince responded.
“That is really troublesome to hear Knight Vince; we must eliminate their numbers immediately.” Elder Lyons said after the knights’ debriefing. “I will call the others together right away.”
The high ranking Brotherhood members and the Pride where gathered in the Great Hall waiting for the emergency meeting to begin. “Brothers.” Elder Lyons began, “It has been brought to my attention that there is a super mutant group massing near this location, I can’t say that they are going to attack but I’d rather not take that chance. There for we are going to plan a strike on their location which has kindly been noted by our outsider.” He said as he gestured to Hank who was leaning against a wall by the door. Hank noticed small comments passing between many of the members, finally realizing why he and Vince, a low level Knight were included in this meeting. “Settle. I have been going over the location and setting up a battle plan, with Sentinel Lyons and her Pride leading the assault. I will now give the floor to Sentinel Lyons to explain the battle plan.
“Alright listen up Pride.” Sarah Lyons began. “We will have Knight Captain Dusk and Colvin on the buildings on opposite side providing sniper cover. Paladin Glade our heavy weapons expert will be wielding a missile launcher, Paladin Vargas and Knight Captain Gallows will be manning Gatling Lasers, and Paladin Kodiak will have some explosive traps set just so if they do try and run they won’t get far. The rest of the Brotherhood we have been assigned to use will be using whichever weapon you choose. We will be set up in positions so the heavy weapons are spread out. Hank and Knight Vince will also be joining us in this sortie.” Sarah finished up the briefing. Elder Lyons now stood up.
“This mission is to start tomorrow morning. So everyone eat and rest well. Dismissed.”
“Elder Lyons I need to speak with you about this mission.” Hank said. Sarah heard this and hung back as the rest of the Brotherhood members filed out. “What is my compensation for this exactly? Usually when I help you I get nothing and if that’s the case here, I can’t do that I have to provide for myself” and two others, he said leaving that last part off.
“I see. In that case the spoils will be returned here and you will be given your fair share.”
“ELDER!” Sarah shouted.
“Silence. He has a point, we cannot continue to use him without just compensation.” Elder replied. At this Hank was a bit surprised, he fully expected the elder to say in that case you may go.
“Well in that case I must go get my weapon so I’m ready. I will be back before the mission starts.” Hank said and headed for the door, hearing an argument start between Sarah and her father. She may like his help but not sharing the prizes. He could fully expect one or two gatlings of choice, it was super mutants and they had little variation of weapons.
He arrived at Megaton late at night, little chance Moira would be open but he needed ammo she would have to deal with it. He stopped at his house and explained to Ginn the situation, she planted a long sensuous kiss on his lips as a going away maybe forever gift. He grabbed his gatling laser a gift from Lucky, his Enclave Armor and headed to Moira’s. He knocked and just hoped she would answer the door. He was about to give up when he heard the lock click and the knob turn. There stood Moira in leopard pattern nightwear.
“Uh” he was a bit stunned to think straight for a moment.
“Can I help you?” she asked in that really out of place cheery voice.
“Yeah I need to know if you have any Electron Charge Packs?” he said finally finding his voice.
“Sure I do come in, I’m closed but…” she didn’t actually finish the sentence. “How many do you have?”
“Oh a few hundred.” She replied casually. He made a deal with how many he could carry and afford.
“Thanks Moira I’ll try not to bother this late again.”
“Anytime.” she replied as he left. He wasn’t entirely sure how she meant that, but didn’t dwell on it he had to get back to the Citadel quickly.
He had a chance to grab a little shut eye in a bed they let him borrow at the Citadel. He was awakened by Vince.
“Its time to get ready Hank.” He informed him.
“Thanks.” He replied as he rolled out of bed and get on his Enclave armor funny he thought going in to battle with the Brotherhood dressed as their mortal enemy.
“Hank.” he heard the Elder call to him he turned and saw him and Sarah standing by the entrance to the Great Hall.
“Yes Elder.” He said deciding it was right to show him a little respect in light of the deal they made last night.
“In light of a talk I’ve had with Sarah,” Oh I didn’t like where this was going. He thought. “We have decided to make you an honorary member of the Brotherhood and at Sarah request of the Pride as well.”
“Here.” she said holding up a set of Pride Power Armor. “Now take off that damn Enclave armor it scares the initiates.” She added.
“Alright Sentinel Lyons.” he said. He quickly changed out of the Enclave Armor and in the Pride Power Armor. “I brought my Gatling Laser I need to know where I will be positioned.”
“We will figure that out in the meeting that is starting, well now.” As the other members of the Pride filed in, he got congratulations and pats on the back apparently they were all fine with his induction into the Pride. Sarah laid out the details of the mission and gave everyone their position. It was time to move out.
Knight Captain Dusk and Colvin got into position first, as they had to climb up several floors of a crumbling ruin of a building. As they climbed the heavy weapons spaced themselves out around the area the muties had occupied and waited for the signal. Hank was right next to Sarah and another Brotherhood Knight he had never met before. “When we get the sign from Dusk and Colvin we move.” Sarah informed him. A little further down the line he saw Vargas, no surprise though he was Sarah right hand man. The sign from Dusk came, a flash of sun off a mirror. Minutes later the same sign came from Colvin. Sarah and all the Pride members raised their arms in the same fashion and brought it down in a forward sweeping motion so everyone knew to move. They moved slowly up the rubble to keep from knocking pieces loss and to keep anyone from getting ahead of another. Right before they crested the top the Heavies went first and lay down fire to deliver massive surprise casualties early. They opened up, the chaos was insane, with so many targets and more popping up all around them the muties didn’t know which way to turn first, the mutants heavies just opened up but they when down first thanks to the snipers. Mutants where exploding it to dust all around the kill zone they had created. Mutant heads fell from shoulders also thanks to the snipers and some just exploded from Glade’s Missile Launcher. Soon the carnage was over. The brotherhood had sustained several casualties. Despite the surprise attack the muties gunned then down in a blind rage of firing. The Brotherhood had brought pack Brahmin pulling trailers to haul the goods back to the Citadel easier. As they were checking the area they came across a giant cage filled with captives, they hadn’t been killed or cooked yet. Hank picked the lock to free them.
“Thank you!” cried out several of them, “I thought we were dead for sure!” one other threw in.
“You better run off, the path to the Citadel is clear but we don’t know for how long.” Hank informed them. They all took off without further words. Sarah walked up about that time.
“Guess it’s a good thing we got here when we did.” she said. He could tell she didn’t really sound as though she cared. It wasn’t long ago he wouldn’t have cared either. He was just killing others to keep from being killed and now he was killing to protect himself and others. Ginn’s presents had changed him, and Sally’s had too.
“So what’s this I here about you and a companion?” Sarah asked him out of the blue.
“What?”
“Some raider you are traveling with?”
“Oh she’s not a raider.”
“That’s not what I hear.”
“What are you doing have me followed?”
“No just a passing patrol spotted you a couple weeks back traveling with a raider, they were going to step in a eliminate her but they could tell you weren’t in trouble. So what’s the story?”
“It’s not really any of your business.” Hank said.
“If it concerns one of my Pride it is.”
“Who in your Pride does this concern?” he asked getting heated. Despite the armor she jabbed him hard in the chest with her finger.
“YOU!” she replied sharply.
“Sentinel!” a shout came from behind her
“Knight report.” She said.
“We have loaded all the useful items onto the pack Brahmin and are ready to move.”
“Move out. We will talk at the Citadel. Don’t run off or I will have to follow you.” She added to Hank. He knew she wasn’t lying but he couldn’t run anyway, he wanted his share of the weapons.
As soon as they arrived she grabbed him and led him into The Lyon’s Den. “Alright now tell me.”
“Is it really that important that you know, it doesn’t affect anything that’s going on here and never will.” She just stared back at him with her hands on her hips waiting. “I want to collect my stuff and head back home.”
“They have to catalog it all first then you will get your cut we have plenty of time.” She replied back. He was seeing no way out of this.
“Fine.” he said. “Have a seat this can take awhile.” As she sat he launched into the story of how he met her and how he nearly died and then how he saved her.
“And this Sally girl?”
“Oh shit.” He had mentioned her off-hand at the end of his tale by saying Ginn watches Sally too. He quickly laid that story out too, leaving out his capture and subsequent escape.
“Building yourself a little family” Why does everyone say that he thought. “Alright after hearing this I can tell it won’t affect our little arrangement.” She concluded.
“That’s what I told you already.”
“Yes but know if you have a problem you can confide in your Sentinel. I take care of my Pride.”
“I doubt there will be any problems I have to come running to you for. She’s a good shot, I wouldn’t get far.” They both laughed at this.
“Sentinel Lyons where is, oh, there he is.” I was sent to tell you we have loaded your share of the goods on one of our pack Brahmin and we will dispatch a small party to guide you to Megaton.”
“This party will be the Pride.” She told the messenger.
“As you wish Sentinel, I will inform the Elder.”
“I wish to meet Ginn, Hank.”
“I thought you might.”
His escort consisted of Colvin, Vargas, Sarah, and Gallows. They arrive in Megaton without incident. After carrying down his items to his house all but Sarah headed to Moriarty’s Saloon.
“So where is she?”
“She’s on guard I assume, that’s what she does.”
“Hank” he heard as she came up behind them. “Did you see those Brotherhood guys heading to Moriarty’s? Oh who is this?”
“This is Sarah.”
“Sarah?”
“Yeah she’s the leader of those Brotherhood you saw. How did you know I was here?”
“I heard you talking; I thought you were talking to Sally.” Ginn looked around not seeing her. Ginn had let her hair grow out since leaving the raider life it was still vibrant red but now it was shoulder length. She now wore leather armor instead of the Painspike but still carried her always trusty hunting rifle.
“Hank’s told me so much about you. I wanted to meet you. I’m Hank’s new boss.” She explained seeing the confused look in Ginn’s face.
“Hold it right there, No you’re not.”
“You’re a member of the Brotherhood now.” Sarah said.
“You are?” Ginn interrupted.
“No, I’m an honorary member, big difference.”
“When did this happen?” Ginn asked.
“This morning before the Mutant attack.” Hank told her.
“Hold on, Mutant attack?”
“Oh shit.”
“You never said anything about mutants, you said you where going to help eliminate a potential threat to the Brotherhood HQ.”
“Which we did.”
“But you didn’t say it was mutants.” Ginn continued.
“Sarah you mentioned something about help earlier?” Hank reminded her.
“Let’s all sit and explain everything.” Sarah suggested. About that time Sally came walking in
“Hey Hank, hey Ginn.” She said not seeing Sarah at first.
“Where you been Sally?” Ginn asked.
“With Maggie. Who is that?” she asked as she ducked behind Hank
“That Sarah, don’t worry she’s alright.” Hank told her.
They went through the details of the assault on the mutants, which calmed Ginn down realizing Hank was in little danger. Sally listened to the whole story wide eyed. Ginn told Sarah a little more about her past that Hank didn’t bother to get into.
“Well if you ever want to help out the Brotherhood we are always looking for scout and destroy group members.”
“Don’t do it they will rope you in like they did me.” Hank told Ginn.
“Well I must be going before the others get too drunk to find their way back to the Citadel. Hank.”
“Sentinel.” he responded, and with that she left. “Well that was certainly interesting. We have to celebrate your not dying.” she said pulling him up and heading for the bedroom.
