Fallout: Life In The Wasteland
Calm wakefulness came over Kid. He opened his eyes. He could feel something soft along the side of his face. He saw that his face was resting on something red. He suddenly felt Dawn take in a slow breath, her chest gently rising as she inhaled, Kid's face being pushed up gently. Past her shirt and lovely bosom he could once again see the dirt of the wasteland. He tried blocking it out, tried closing his eyes, tried feeling nothing but the gentle beating of Dawn's heart against his cheek, but he failed. The hot wasteland sun was coming down on his back with a vengeance. He opened his eyes once more. He pushed himself up off of Dawn, inadvertently rousing her into wakefulness. Her eyelids fluttered open, a smile gracing her full, lovely lips. "Hey, Kid...Good morning..." She murmured tiredly, stretching slightly with Kid still over her, Kid watching her curiously in silence. She closed her eyes once more, but Kid could tell that she was done with sleeping, she was just resting for a moment or two. She began to reach down along her body, her eyes shooting open when she felt that her pants were still down. She raised her hands to Kid, feeling that his pants were still down, too. In their passion, neither of them had pulled up their lower garments. "Alright, up off me, we gotta do something." Dawn said. Kid nodded, getting up off of her, the blanket falling down from his back. Dawn got up, her face showing a bit of pain. She placed her left hand on her back, moaning quietly in pain. "Damn, I had forgotten how much it can hurt to sleep on the ground..." Kid watched her with slightly-wide eyes, wondering if there was anything he could do to help with her pain.
A soft breeze blew over the land, playing with Dawn's long black hair. She quickly reached behind her head and adjusted her hair before she reached down to her pants, which were down to her calves. She pulled them up along with her panties, buttoning her pants and zipping them. She knelt down and grabbed his pants, bringing them up. As she raised his pants, her face came level with his tool. She froze, pausing her movements. Kid blushed as he felt her eyes gaze along him, like he was an object being examined by a customer. Dawn smiled and brought her face closer to him, lightly pressing her lips to the shaft of his tool in a kiss. A tingly feeling floated up his neck at the sensation, a light smile coming to him. Dawn smiled more, giving him another two quick kisses before resuming her previous movements, pulling his pants and boxers up. She smiled at Kid. "Hungry?" She asked. He nodded gently. Dawn looked off to the side, seemingly scanning the wasteland. "Yeah, me too..." She muttered. "Alright, remember yesterday, when I said I could take you to a place with food and water?" Kid once more nodded softly. Dawn smiled at him a little more. "Well, I wasn't lying, I really can. Come on, if we leave now and keep a fast pace we can reach the city by suppertime." She packed everything up, Kid grabbing his book and his pencil. As Dawn began to walk away, Kid ran over and took a tight hold on her right hand with his left, as those were the hands where neither of them held anything. Dawn smiled at him, not saying anything against him holding her hand. They walked for around ten minutes in the bright sunlight before Kid forced himself to speak. "Wh-Where are we..." He started out. Dawn, looking over with wide eyes at the sound of Kid's voice, mumbled "Huh?" Kid restarted his sentence, slowly saying "Where are w-we going?..." Dawn smiled. "Illust City." She stated with a soft exhale. Looking forward with a smile, she said "You'll like it there, trust me." Kid nodded gently, speaking no more, the two of them travelling in silence for a good part of the day.
"Dawn and I have finally stopped walking. She took me up to a large hill and showed me Illust City. It was amazing! There's so many houses, it's incredible. Most of the houses glowed with light, Dawn telling me that almost all of Illust had electricity. It looked so peaceful and wonderful in the wasteland, there was nothing around it at all, like the city itself was a survivor. Dawn told me she really misses it. I wanted to ask her if she was close to anyone there, but I couldn't find the words. No time to write anything more, Dawn says it's time to move. She wants to get to Illust before the sun sets."
Kid placed his pencil within the book on the first page. Dawn began to walk away. Kid watched as she held her arm outstretched slightly behind her, holding her hand out. He quickly walked over to her and held her hand, Dawn smiling at him as she felt his fingers tighten around her's. They walked down the hill and continued towards the image of Illust on the near horizon.
The two figures of Dawn and Kid slowly approached the outskirts of the city of Illust. Illust was a rather new city, wastelanders starting to inhabit it only sixty years prior to Dawn and Kid's approach that day. It was built a bit north of New Reno, being a bit southward of Modoc. A guard stood on a rooftop near the edge of the city, a pair of binoculars raised to his face, the hot desert wind of the wasteland blowing around his figure. "Hmmm..." He mumbled. "Why in the fuck would she come back?...And who's the kid with her?..." The guard abandoned his post, climbing a ladder against the house down to the street, jogging off.
Dawn knew that she and Kid would be spotted by guards at Illust long before they actually entered the city. She didn't care, however. "If Vince wants to make a big deal of things, then he'll see a side of me he may never have thought existed." She decided angrily. Kid continued to hold her hand in silence, looking around as he visually took in the wasteland. She smiled a little bit. She didn't want to admit it, but she found his timid nature to be rather appealing. Cute even, for a kid, at least. She smiled a little more. She looked forward again, her smile vanishing as she saw a flash of pink skin in the corner of her vision. She gasped, releasing Kid's hand. Kid watched her collapse to the ground as something tackled her with an animalistic roar. It was hideous!
It wasn't a terribly large animal, being perhaps half the size of his body if it were on it's kind legs. It was almost completely hairless, exposing it's pale pinkish skin. A few long hairs hung out from it's back, but they were few and far between. It's eyes were large and completely black. It's claws were deathly white, five claws per foot. It's tail was short and stubby. It seemed to have no lips to speak of, no flap of skin to cover the inside of it's mouth, but that didn't seem to be a problem for it as it only had four teeth at the front of it's mouth, two on the top and two on the bottom. Dawn dropped everything she had been carrying, now slammed to the ground on her back. A look of angry panic crossed her. The creature didn't seem concerned with clawing her, it only seemed to want to bite her, to taste her flesh. She rammed her fist into it's mouth. Due to the size of her fist and the relatively small size of the creature's jaws, she had effectively stopped it from being able to bite down on her, having stretched it's jaws to their limits. The creature kept screeching in anger, roaring around her fists. That's when it began to dig it's claws into her. Kid stood there in horror, wondering what to do. Dawn began to cry out in pain, tears appearing in her eyes. The creature, seemingly out of someone's nightmare, had begun to drag it's claws along her body, raking along her chest and stomach. "Help me!!" Dawn cried. Kid noticed her two rifles lying on the ground near her. She tried kicking the beast off of herself, but to no avail. Kid ignored Dawn's sniper rifle, instead grabbing the new bolt-action one nearby, the one she had gotten from the raider she had killed to save him.
He pulled it up from the ground, instinctively pulling back the lever of the bolt-action, ejecting a spent bullet shell to load a new one. He raised it and pointed it towards the beast, pulling the trigger. The side of it's fat neck burst in a shower of gore, it's body going limp and collapsing. Dawn gasped as it's blood poured out. She pushed it off of her. "Fucking pigrat!" She screamed quietly in rage and pain. The front of her clothes, her shirt in particular, were slashed through multiple times. Kid watched her with sadness, tears appearing in her eyes. "Help me up..." She softly said, holding her hands out. Kid did so, helping Dawn to her feet. The two of them left the stuff they had dropped, Kid dropping the bolt-action rifle to the dusty ground. He supported her as they continued walking towards Illust. Dawn rested her free hand, as she had her other arm around Kid's shoulders, to her chest. "Shit!..." She gasped, blood covering her and slowly appearing in her mouth. Kid had tears in his eyes by that point as he began to quickly walk Dawn towards Illust. Several houses grew closer, the two of them finally entering the city. Several men in hardened leather armour, armed with assault rifles, rushed over to them just as Dawn collapsed to the ground. "Dawn!" Kid cried out. "Dawn!!" The guards ran over to her. Kid began to cry. "Dawn!!" He screamed.
"The guards took Dawn away. They asked me what had hurt her. I remembered her calling it a pigrat, so I told them that. They said that she was hurt really badly, but that they had stimpacks and other talented people at the Cardinal Hospital, so they could help her. Then a man, or...Something...Walked up. He was wearing a dark helmet on his head. It completely covered his head with metal except for what looked like a dark plate of glass over his face, so he could see. He wore a black coat of some kind, it reached his feet.
He said that Dawn would be fine, in time. He said that she was in a bit of trouble, and until she woke up, I shouldn't go anywhere. He ordered some guards to take me to some holding area, it's a big building made of gray stone. I went with them, I didn't want to fight. I'm alone in some room. It's sort of dark, but at least they didn't take away my book. I'm getting pretty tired, so I suppose I'll just sleep in the bed they have here. I'll write some more later...I can't believe I just froze up like that...I took so long to help her!...I can't let that ever happen again!"
Kid closed his book just as someone opened the door to his small holding cell. It was a guard in hard leather armour, his rifle slung over his shoulder. "Hey Kid, here's some food." Another guard walked in with a tray of food, placing it on the bed near Kid. The guard that had brought in the food grinned. "You know Dawn, huh?" Kid nodded. The first guard smiled and left, the other guard walking over to the door. "Heh, what I wouldn't give to fuck her...She's got some shit to deal with when she wakes up, Vince hasn't forgotten what she did to him." Kid was confused. Who was Vince? What did Dawn do to him? How soon will she get better? The guard shut the door, Kid looking over at the tray of food that he had left for him. Kid felt pretty hungry, but he wanted to see Dawn more than he wanted to eat, ignoring the food. He lay back in the cell's bed, closing his eyes.
A few days later...
Nothing but darkness. A heart beating rapidly in reaction to pain. A deep breath. Eyes open slowly and miserably. A dark helmet stares back. "Welcome to the world of waking, Dawn. Welcome to a world of shit." The heart beats a bit faster, a bit louder. The breathing speeds up a bit in fear. Her eyes close once more, sleep taking her again.
