Lizabetha
I shivered and moved closer to the fire. I was only wearing my nightgown and was beginning to feel chilled. I couldn’t see that all this talking was getting us anywhere. And I didn’t like leaving Arrentai alone. I know the healer, Fiona, said he would sleep until morning, but I still wanted to be with him.
“I’m going back to bed,” I interrupted their discussion. “I assume that’s all right.”
“Of course,” Fiona said. “That’s fine.”
She followed me to the door and spoke quietly.
“It will be fine to hold him, that seems to comfort him; but I suggest you don’t touch him intimately. In his present condition he is more likely to interpret that as a threat.”
She touched my arm gently. Her hand, paw?, felt so much like Arrentai’s I couldn’t stop the tears as they began again.
“It will be all right, my dear. We’ll get him well again, I promise.”
I nodded silently and walked away. I wished I could believe her.
Arrentai was sleeping peacefully as Fiona had promised. I lay down beside him, close but not touching, and just watched him. When Josstellan and Maelinastra had offered to bring me back to Draenor I’d jumped at the chance. There wasn’t much for me to do in Darnassus now that Taliesa was in Stormwind training as a priest, and I was missing Arrentai as much as he was missing me. So if he wasn’t coming home just yet I’d go to him. I was finding it hard to believe what had happened but I was glad I was here when he needed me so much.
Eventually I fell asleep.
I awoke to feel the weight of Arrentai’s arm across me, a weight that was swiftly pulled away as he stirred, and I opened my eyes to look into his. They looked so haunted. I wanted desperately to change that, to see again the loving warmth I knew so well. Slowly I lifted my hand from the pillow and reached towards him. I could see him tremble.
“I want to help you,” I whispered. “But I’ll only do what you’re comfortable with.”
I began to move my hand again towards his face, then felt my stomach start to churn. I rolled over, scrambled off the bed and ran for the bathroom. I just made it. When I came out Nerissina was waiting. She’d obviously heard me.
“Are you all right?” she asked. I nodded even though I felt far from fine. I was getting used to it and I knew it would eventually pass.
“Does he know?”
“No. and I don’t know if I should tell him yet or not. He has enough to cope with already.”
“I wonder if it might help to have some good news,” she mused. “I never had a chance to tell him that.”
I knew what she was referring to, obviously the memories still hurt her even after so many years.
“Think about it, Lizabetha.”
I nodded and walked back into Arrentai’s room. He was sitting on the side of the bed, his head bowed. He looked up at me, his eyes showing his anxiety.
“Are you all right?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said, a little shakily.
“Come here!”
I walked across the room and stood in front of him, hands by my sides, wondering what he intended. For a moment he just looked at me, then slowly hesitantly lifted his hand and rested it on my belly. I could feel the heat of his touch through my nightgown, calming, soothing my nausea.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I only knew just before you left Azeroth,” I whispered. “And I was afraid to say anything after what happened before, afraid it would happen again.”
“Oh, my love,” he said anguished. “And I left you to deal with that all alone. I’m so sorry.”
Now I lifted my hand and rested it gently against the side of his jaw. He trembled but did not pull away.
“That’s in the past. We’re together now, and we can help each other.”
“I don’t know what I can do,” he admitted. “My mind is telling me I should forget what happened, put it behind me and get on with life. But my body, my emotions won’t let me do that.”
“I understand,” I said softly. “Fiona explained to us, she told us about pack behaviour, how what happened was an attack on your position as pack leader.”
“Is that what she said? I’ve never consciously seen myself that way. Because I’ve mostly lived among other races rather than just with worgen I suppose I haven’t really seen myself as a pack member. But until I came here I was simply a subject of the king, who I suppose is also our pack leader. So, yes, I can see what she means.”
He smiled, although what passes for a smile on a worgen looks rather ferocious unless you know them, and lifted his hand to place it over mine.
“Guess that makes you my alpha female then.”
I laughed, pleased that he could find some humour in the situation. Taking a chance I put both arms round him and pulled him close so his head was resting on my belly. I held him lightly, my hands resting on his shoulders, so he wouldn’t feel trapped, he could pull free whenever he wanted. Although he tensed, he didn’t pull away so I guess that was progress of a sort. After some moments he stood up. Because of his height my hands slipped from his shoulders, coming to rest against his chest. I froze for a moment, remembering how he’d reacted yesterday to that touch, but he just smiled and gently touched a finger to the side of my face.
“Much as I’d like to stay here I think we should dress and join the others. There’s work that needs doing; that I should have done yesterday.”
I nodded before turning away to dress, pulling clean clothes from my bag.
“We should tell the others about the baby if I’m to stay here,” I said softly.
“Yes. Although I think they’d soon notice anyway. You’re far enough gone that those loose robes won’t hide it much longer.”
I smiled. It had never been my intention to hide my pregnancy, it was just that the robes were more comfortable as my waistline disappeared.
Together we walked into the main room of the town hall. As well as being their home this was where Gillaen and his admin staff handled most of the garrison’s business. He was talking to the woman who had been introduced to me as the mission specialist. Upon seeing us he excused himself and joined us as we headed for the other end of the room where Nerissina, Maelinastra and Josstellan were sitting by the fire.
“We have something to tell you,” Arrentai said, and I saw Nerissina give a slight nod.
