Silabus’s World
|Haseo&Silabus|
Ch.3 – Offline
The trip was probably longest Yuuichi had ever taken. Haseo really didn’t tell him much other than the general location and the time he wish to meet at. Yuuichi wasn’t sure if he needed to bring anything with him, the E-mail was quite barren with information. He decided not to bring anything besides the clothes on his body, just to make things less awkward. He runs his hand through the side of his hair, making it more of a mess then it already was, and continues walking down one of the busy street passes in Tokyo.
It didn’t long to find the place; a popular noodle bowls restaurant Haseo suggest in his e-mail. He felt flattered. He always did enjoy Japanese food much more then western food.
“Welcome Master~~!”
A young woman in a bright pink maid outfit greets him at the front door. Yuuichi had a gut feeling Haseo choose the place for a different reason.
“Pervert.”
Yuuichi mutters under his breathe. The maid kept staring, waiting for a respond. Yuuichi shrugs his shoulder, feeling a little embarrassed.
“I’m, uh, waiting for someone.”
His words stutter. The maid just smiles.
“Hm~? Is it a special someone?”
She hints at, curling her lip a little.
“Well, yeah… B-But I wouldn’t say that to them, it’s still too soon.”
He stammers his words once again. The Maid nods her head and holds her finger up, swinging it around.
“Okie dokie, Master~!”
She sings at him then holds her hand flat.
“Let me just get you seated until they come around then, yes?”
She sat him down at one of the tables outside the restaurant. Yuuichi nods to her and sits down.
“I’ll come back when your special guest comes around, Master!”
He nods again at her, faking a smile. She hops away and heads back to the front, greeting people as usual. Yuuichi waited patiently. Haseo had given him a faint description of himself in the e-mail. He was average height, had brown hair, wore heavy brown coat with tattered blue jeans. Sounded just like any other normal looking High-School student, if a little wilder. Yuuichi was quite excited, but he didn’t want his excitement to get the best of him. He kept focus and thought about the smaller things like, ‘what should he order’, ‘how much money he had on him’, things he thought weren’t that important at the time for him.
A few minutes pass he looks back at girl who seated him before. She had her hands nears her head, slightly swiping them up and down like a cat. She swung her hips to the side and purr like a cat. Everyone there founds it cute, Yuuichi just found it annoying honestly. Perhaps this was one of the reasons he never notice women all that much, they felt fake. No one in their right mind would do that so publicly unless they had to. She was nice because her job demanded her to be, who knows how she acted in real life. It got him to thinking again, what is Haseo really like? Perhaps he was lying all this time? He could be the total opposite of what he said he was. It was a scary thought to think about, but one he needed to know now.
He looks over at the woman again, growing a little impatient. He notices was a young man standing in front of her. For some reason, this man caught his attention the most. Her head slightly looked back to Yuuichi and back the man in front of her.
“Could that be him?”
She pointed at Yuuichi and then waved at the man. He shrugs, putting his hands in his coat pockets and starts walking over towards Yuuchi direction. The man did have a lot of the distant descriptions Haseo posted in his E-mail to him. The thought of seeing Haseo walking right towards him made him skeptical. Still, he kept focus and held his body firm. It was before long as he was staring face to face with the stranger. The both stare for a while, neither one saying anything to the other. This was most awkward.
“Um… Hel… Uh…”
Yuuichi tries to start a conversation up but stops. The boy finally opens his mouth and points at him.
“Yuuichi, right?”
Yuuichi shoulders shake up hearing so suddenly. He quickly nods and hesitates to reply.
“Haseo!”
The only thing he thought to blurt out was the guy’s player name. Ryou quickly looks around the area then back at him.
“Come on, call me Ryou.”
He pouts, looking away again, face all flustered and embarrassed.
“Right, my mistake.”
Yuuichi scratches his cheek, still smiling at the boy. He takes an opportunity to get a good look on him. Ryou’s hair was messy as well, but he didn’t mind that on him, it looked good on him. His coat hid most of his body it was hard to tell how skinny he was. He had to be much more skinny then him though. He then notices how high he was scaling over him.
“You’re much taller than I thought you are.”
He question over to Ryou. Ryou looks at him and laughs.
“I actually expected you to be taller than me.”
Yuuichi laughs back. He sits on the other side of the table and holds his hand out to a waitress to take their order. Yuuchi then plays with his unruly hair while they wait, blushing a little.
“Sorry, I look like a mess.”
He complains. Ryou notices and puts his hand down.
“You’re fine.”
He replies with a smile. He then wags his finger at Yuuichi and continues talking.
“You know, you look alike your avatar in the game. You’re just shorter and have much shorter hair.”
“I could never keep my hair together, I was thinking of going bold.”
Ryou snickers.
“Now that is something I need to say.”
“You’re supposed to say I shouldn’t!”
Yuuichi complains again, but couldn’t help but escape another laugh. The maid from before finally comes over, smiley cheekily and holding her hand flat in the air.
“What do you want to order, Masters?”
As they ordered, they started ramble about the past adventures they did ln The World. The tournaments they entered, how everyone was supposedly stuck in the game, the PK incident surrounding Sakaki, and Cubia itself. Ryou kept a few things to himself like the Avatars and AIDA. Even now, there was no really reason for him to know about such things. They talked about how the others were doing like Gaspard, Kuhn and even Alkaid. Yuuichi felt a little relived when talking to Ryo. He didn’t want to admit it himself, but he hadn’t really talked to anyone besides Haseo for the past few weeks, not even Gaspard. He kind of missed the little guy actually. If he did see him again though, he wouldn’t be able to tell him the truth. Gaspard was young and innocent, he didn’t need to deal with the things he was now. Ignoring him was probably for the best, at least until he figured out what to do with him and his urges surrounding Haseo.
“Man, to think a random run with Gaspard would lead us to where we are now.”
Ryou says, chugging down his bowl. Yuuichi nods, sipping his own bowl.
“You were really spooked when I called myself the ‘Terror of death!’”
“It didn’t last long. A ‘noob’ shouldn’t really call give themselves just a famous name, you know.”
Yuuichi almost spits out some noodles and coughs a laugh.
“Hey, I am not a ‘noob.’”
Ryou whines back. Thinking back, Silabus was a little skeptical meeting Haseo for the first time. He was kind of an asshole to be frank, but he would never say that to him. But that Haseo back then had changed, for better or for worse and to him, he felt it was best. And to finally see what he was actually like in person, it made him quite happy to know he was the same Haseo he always knew Online.
The lunch went quite quick, even Yuuichi was surprised how fast his food disappeared. Ryou stretches his arms out and heaves out a relaxed sigh. Yuuichi started to feel a little depressed that their meeting didn’t last longer. They did talk a lot, but they only talked about the past and not much about themselves or now. Yuuichi was kind of glad though. He really didn’t have much to say about himself or the things he’s done.
“Hey, you’re coming over to my apartment, right?”
Ryou suddenly spoke out to him. Yuuichi looks at him, quite surprised. He continues on.
“You’re probably tired from all the traveling. It would be rude of me to send you back home right after lunch. Unless you’re busy, I understand.”
Yuuichi thought to himself for a moment. Busy? No, he was never busy. He had all the time in the world for Ryou. Yuuichi nods, whipping his napkin over his mouth.
“No, I’m not busy. Thanks, Ryou.”
“No problem.”
Ryou replies back. Then there was another pause as the two of them sit there awkwardly. Not between the two, but by something else. The same maid from before was sitting next to them the entire time they had eaten. It was part of her job to sit with the customers while they ate and converse with them. The two of them have been talking so much to one another that they completely ignored her. Her face looked less cute and more annoyed, angry, and quite bored. She quickly stands up and wipes down her dress. She coughs abruptly and slaps his hands against her cheeks. Her faces suddenly changes back into form and she laughs.
“Come again, Masters~!”
She says, bowing to them as the two slowly leave from the table, bowing back at her. They quickly paced out of the restaurant, not even daring to look back behind them.
It only took a block or so to reach Ryou’s apartment. Yuuichi was surprised to hear he had one already for his age. He did remark his family was rich and that they trusted him enough to live alone in Tokyo. Still, even under different circumstances, Yuuichi couldn’t help but think his situation was starting too similar to his. Ryou pulls out his keys from his jacket pocket and clicks open the door. Yuuichi enters first, tapping off his shoes.
“Sorry for the mess.”
Ryou explains, entering next while closing the door. Yuuichi walks forward and enters the main living room. It had a few clothes lying around the floor, but nothing to disastrous.
“It reminds me of my own room.”
He jokes to him. The two of them snicker.
Ryou’s apartment wasn’t as big as Yuuchi’s, but instead of two rooms it had three, the living room, the bathroom, and a bedroom of his own. His living room was a mix between the entertainment room and kitchen. Yuuichi was a bit jealous when he peeked passed the boy’s bedroom, it was quite huge and the bed was fit for two. He blushes at the bed but quickly shakes his head, bringing his mind back into focus. This was not the time or place for him to start thinking such thoughts, especially with Ryou so close by. His feelings were his own for now, and he wasn’t ready to say anything to him just yet.
Ryou flicks on the living room light near the end of the hallway and walks over to the kotatsu sitting in the middle of the room. He grabs the remote laying on it and powers up the small-sized T.V. in front of it.
“If I knew I was going to stay longer, I would have brought my headset. You know, to play The World with you.”
Yuuichi jokes as he walks in a few moments later. Ryou gives a half-hearted smile at him but then looks away.
“Hm, yeah, I suppose.”
His voice was low and didn’t show any enthusiasm. Yuuichi grew concern with the sudden mood change. Ryou walks around the table and sits himself down.
“Relax yourself.”
He says, patting the ground. Yuuichi stood there for a second, debating where to sit. He quickly decided it would be best to sit across from Ryou then next to him and shot himself down where he stood. Ryou looked at him funny then stared over to the television. The two stayed quiet for a while, watching the T.V. blare out the weekly news. Yuuichi wanted to spark up another conversation but he couldn’t think of anything else to talk about. As the commercial break went by, a commercial for the M2D headset popped up on screen. It was like all the others, showing off its ‘futurist features’ and ‘mobility’ and so on. This actually gave Yuuichi a chance to speak out again.
“When do you think they’ll make a new M2D headset model? This year, maybe next year, either way I’m quite excited to use it when playing The World.”
Ryou doesn’t reply. Yuuichi rubs his knee, starting to feel a bit antsy. He had thought he had done something wrong, but he couldn’t think of anything he did to upset Ryou.
“Don’t you ever want to get away from The World?”
Ryou suddenly spoke out. His voice grows serious in tone that worried Yuuichi.
“What do you mean?”
Yuuichi questions to him. Ryou sighs and flops himself on the ground.
“It just seems that The World has been the only thing we’ve talked about sense we meet.”
He wasn’t wrong. Sense they first greeted one another all Yuuichi talked about was The World and their characters from it. A lot did happen and he never took it to consideration that Ryou didn’t want to think or talk about the events.
“Not many things happen in my life. I mean, I do go out and volunteer from time to time. But, that’s not very interesting, is it?”
Yuuichi couldn’t help but complain about his own self though. He frowns, mouthing out an apology.
“Did I upset you?”
He continues on. Ryou shrugs his shoulder upward and kneels back up.
“Nah, it’s nothing like that. If anything, I’ve just been overthinking about it all.”
Ryou replied back.
“Overthinking?”
Ryou tilts his head to the side and sighs.
“Well... I’m just been thinking about a few things Offline and… Well, maybe I should quit The World.”
He was finally able to spit out the words. Yuuichi was in shock, almost traumatized even. To have such a small word put him on edge; pathetic.
“Quitting… But, why?”
Yuuichi voice cracked while saying.
“I know it’s weird for me to say this. Hell, I spent months doing so many things not many people in the real world would know me about. Won tournaments, fought against rampant player killers, saved guilds, saved the world, saved Alkaid, saved… Shino.”
Ryou stops himself, his face growing dark. Yuuichi stayed silent for a moment but tried to perk up the mood again.
“You weren’t alone though.”
He happily replies. Ryou forces a half-smile and looks over to him.
“Of course, I wouldn’t have saved Shino without you guys.”
Yuuichi couldn’t help but bring up another question now.
“I know this is sudden for me to say, but, did Shino and you ever…?”
Yuuichi stops himself before he finishes. He had no real business with Shino and Ryou’s relationship, so why start now? Ryou halfhearted smiles and shakes his head no. He then shyly looks away, frowning a little.
“I still care about her, but… But I suppose I can only think of her as a friend.”
He sighs again and lays his head on the kotatsu.
“There are better guys for her out there anyway.”
Yuuichi wanted to scream what was in his head; ‘You’re the greatest guy there is’, ‘You’re better than any other man she knows!’ But again, it was not his business to interfere.
“I guess that’s what growing up is really about.”
He continues on. Yuuichi stops all thought and pays close attention to his words.
“Accepting to move on with your responsibilities, no matter how hard it is to do.”
Yuuichi lowers his head, hiding his frown. He felt miserable hearing those words. All those problems he was dealing with and Ryou easily fought through them. He had so much more on the line in he did, he had to pass many more risks and fight against the impossible. To have someone much younger then him accomplished so much then then him, it truly made him feel worthless.
“I… Ryou….”
His words came off to quiet that Ryou didn’t even notice. Yuuichi wanted to say something to him, but he was just at a loss of words. It was easy before, why couldn’t he say anything now? He wanted comfort, he wanted Ryou to hug him and tell him everything was going to be OK for him. He just wanted Ryou so much right now.
“…Yuuichi, there is something I wish to tell you.”
Ryou raises his head again and changes the subject himself. Yuuichi loses his train of thought and looks back up as well. He was quite intrigued on what else Ryou had to say to him.
“I wanted to tell you something because I knew you would keep it a secret. That and I can trust you with this information as well.”
A secret only for him, what did it mean? Yuuichi drew all his attention to Ryou once more.
“Yes? What is it, Ryou?”
His voice shakes in excitement but his body kept calm. He waits for Ryou to reply.
“Atoli… Chigusa and I having been going out for some time.”
A pause, just a simple paused hanged over the two.
“A... to… li…?”
Yuuichi slowly says, still keeping eye contact on Ryou.
“Damn, saying that took a lot more effort than I thought it would.”
He scratches his head and smiles over to Yuuichi
“She’s been so embarrasses about it sense I asked her that she’s been hiding away from the computer for days. It’s been hard to contact her much online and offline because she’s just that scared for anyone else to find out. Chigusa was always a strange one, even if she’s cute when she acts like that.”
Ryou blushes, quickly hiding his face away with his hand.
“Don’t tell her I said that.”
He laughs under his breathe. Yuuichi couldn’t believe it. Did Ryou just invite him all the way out here to tell him that he’s dating Atoli? He felt offended, almost used even. But why was he so angry, he wasn’t dating Haseo, why should he be angry? Betrayed? He couldn’t help but feel utterly betrayed. Betrayed over something Ryou doesn’t even know he broke. It was stupid to think this, but Yuuichi couldn’t help it. He wanted to say something to him there, but he didn’t have the courage. Mostly because he was afraid of rejected and afraid how he would handle said rejection. But why was he scared about that last part? Even he didn’t know at this time. None the less, he just had to accept that his imagination wasn’t anything like the real life or The World. Accepting such responsibilities now was easy enough, but keeping it was another feet entirely for him.
“Co… Congratulations…”
Yuuichi finally says, forcing a smile. Haseo stretches his arm behind his back and shrugs his shoulder to the side.
“Come on now, you’re embarrassing me even more.”
He places his hands back on his lap.
“I do have a confession. It was one of the bigger reasons why I asked you over. I wanted someone to help her out, feel more comfortable about all this, you know? I thought you be best for the job sense she knows you quite well and all.”
Ryou was guilty for tricking Yuuichi a little, and was finally glad to get that weight off his shoulders. Yuuichi actually wanted to complain a little, but he knew it was best not to. Besides, helping people out is what he does. It’s his favorite thing to do after all. Most times. Yuuichi slight waves his hand then places it back on his lap.
“No, I understand. I understand completely, Ryou.”
Yuuichi agrees, even if his tone of voice didn’t sound like he did. Ryou continues himself.
“I just need you to hang out with us and give her a little more courage.”
“Yeah, I can do that…”
Yuuichi agrees again. Ryou pumps his fist a little, but hid it away once Yuuichi sow. He then laughs and gives him a big smile.
“I know she’ll be happy to meet you in person.”
Yuuichi nods and mutters.
“Yeah, she’ll be thrilled...”
