(Two weeks have passed,) Link thought, (and Marin won't say a word. She seems to be...distant. Like she knows something and doesn't want me to know...). They were back in Mabe Village, in Marin and Tarin's house, but since Tarin was always away looking for toadstools, the house was their's for now. Link had stopped adventuring ever since Marin almost drowned, but had taken up to training the young boys of the village how to swing a sword. If he was going to be living there, he would protect his home with his life, if necessary. The owl pestered Link a few days ago to continue his quest, but he didn't care anymore. (If this world if a lie, then I don't care for the truth,) he often told himself. (Still, I wonder what's on Marin's mind...). No matter what he did, he just wanted her to open up to him. She had gone to Crazy Tracy's house for the afternoon, and said she would stay there until tomorrow, a sort of sleepover with an old friend. With today's training done, Link had a lot of time on his hands. He heard a rumour that there was some fantastic treasure in the signpost maze to the east. (Couldn't hurt...) he thought as he gathered his belongings and set out.

Marin lied. She wasn't going to Tracy's. She was going to the woods to cry. She cried and screamed until her eyes burned, her nostrils fully clogged, and her voice scratched. Link was going to be the father of her child. Keyword: was. Two weeks. No more morning sickness. No more sensitivity. It was like a hole was ripped from her whole. She felt empty, and cold, like death's embrace took the one thing she cared about more than all others. On all fours, she slowly crawled through the Mysterious Woods, thankful that Link took the initiative and cleared it out for her. She came across a pool of water, her heart racing. (There better not be any fish things in there....) she thought with acid.
"You are in a state of duress, young lady," a voice rang in her ears like music. "I could hear thine caterwauling from mine spring, thine face is muddled from tears and mud shades the beauty of the flaming locks upon thine crown." The Great Fairy sprang to life from the spring, a 10 foot giantess, with more makeup and dyed hair than anyone on Koholint. "I can sense a great pain upon thine heart and from deep in thine womb. Tell me, child. How were you hurt, and by whom?"
Marin could barely speak, but forced herself to kneel and could barely whisper. "Great Fairy, I- I am hurt. I am hurt in ways I didn't know could hurt. I am...pregnant...I think, but I... I don't know anymore..." She said the last part so softly that she could barely hear her own voice, but the Great Fairy heard every word.
"You are with child, child? But that life was ripped away before it had a chance to flourish." This made Marin cry another set of tears. "I see... I have the ability to heal the pain so it can be directly confronted, but not remove thine suffering. You must find a way to stop that yourself." With a snap of her fingers, Marin felt a weight removed, but not gone. She felt energized, but only so much that she could stand to her feet and stare the Great Fairy straight in the eyes.
"Great Fairy, I... Thank you." She bowed deeply to the fairy. "But, what do you feel I should do now? I... I just can't tell..."
"To the east of here, there is a witch. If a toadstool is brought, she will be in thine favour, little one. I happen to have the only one in the whole of my forest, as well. Take it with you, but if you see a large man, do not give it to him. I so enjoy playing with him..." She said with a sultry smile.
Marin didn't want to think of what this massive woman and her father were 'playing,' but she put it out of her mind. "Is...is there a catch? I got burned last time..."
"And that is where thine pain originates," the Great Fairy almost read her mind. "Consider it a gift to a lost soul."

Link was walking in circles. (Go this way, go this way, go this way... This would be better if I could just focus!). Link tried over and over to try and put is fiancée out of his mind, but he kept thinking about how she was avoiding him intentionally. Eventually, after forcing himself to focus on the maze, he found the entrance to...a frog cave? And for 300 rupees, he could get front row seats to the most underutilized song in the game?! Sign me up! Unfortunately, he was a bit short on cash, so he went back to his lawn business for an hour or so until he had enough.

The witch was impressed with the young woman. She was dishevelled, but stern and confident. She put on an imposing air, which the witch was not expecting of this young village girl. But enough of that, she brought the witch her first toadstool in weeks, ever since that young man first arrived. "So, what is it you want then? A love potion perhaps? A young girl like you can get any man or woman she wants, hehehe... Or maybe some enchanted boots that let you float on the air? That one is a real hot item, this is the only one is the multiverse. Or maybe-"
"I don't want any of that. I want information."
"That may be worth many times what one toadstool is. What type of 'information?'"
Marin told her story to the witch.
"I see. So you want revenge on 'em scalies, eh? Hmm... No, no. That won't do at all. It was their leader, Queen Sireen, and her adjutant, First Consort Martha, who did that to you. It was not the whole of the mermaid people who did that. You cannot bring an entire population to their knees for one person's misdeeds." Marin sunk in defeat, she knew that her half baked plan would be shot down. "But... I could concoct something that could...help you uncover the truth."
"Uncover the truth? What on earth are you taking about?"
"It will take time, and resources. But if you want...I could brew a potion of the finest caliber, one that could help you and your...lost soul. It would be enough for two, to be given the mermaid's powers. During that time, you would be free to do as you see fit, and do whatever it takes to get your child back. I need three ingredients. Firstly, a single feather from the largest bird on Koholint, only found on the highest peaks in the Tal Tal range. Secondly, the coldest rock from inside a volcano. Finally, I need a sprig of hair from both participants who will drink the potion."
"A large feather, a cold rock, and our hair. Got it. I'll be back soon, but, I gotta know...how do you know the mermaids so well?"
The witch stopped, stared at Marin for a minute, and walked to the window before answering. "You are in a similar position as I was, years ago. I was once young, you know. Queen Sireen, is...was...my daughter. I will not let another experience this. You should go. There is a secret somewhere on the island that can revive lost souls. Find that, and your child should be yours once more."
Marin thanked the witch and headed out. The hole in her heart was replaced with a fire, burning wildly. She will find the things she needs. She will save their daughter. She will.

Two hours have passed, and Link finally collected enough for the show. As he got settled, the frogs started screaming at him. He memorized the notes, and played it on the ocarina. He learned the "moving melody" of the Frog's Song of Soul! This allowed the dead to be brought back to life! (Yeah, like this will ever be helpful...). Link raced back to Mabe, but didn't see where he was going and ran into Marin. Literally.
"Oh goddesses, Marin, are you okay?" Links was concerned with the well being of the wife-to-be and their child. "Did I hurt you?"
"No, I'm...I'm...no, I'm not fine. I..." Marin couldn't meet his eye. "I...need to talk with you. Now." She gaged up at him, he could see her eyes clearly. Behind the blue, a fierce gaze shattered his resolve to protest. This was the same as on the beach a few weeks ago. She was determined, and needed Link.
In the house...
"Link, I...was pregnant." Marin started. "Before you say anything, let me finish. The mermaid queen, said that...if I...orgasmed into her...she would steal my child, take her into herself, where she would then become the new queen. I...believe that is what happened that day. This means that our daughter, our baby girl, is in a muddy hole in the bottom of the goddesses-damned ocean. I...didn't go to Tracy's. I lied. I went to the witch, and she made a plan. We could go back to the mermaid city, get our child back, and live here happily. We just need a few things for the potion, and a secret treasure of Koholint. I don't care if you come or not, but I'm going."
It was a lot to take in all at once. (My daughter...is dead...before I even knew she existed...and I... might've killed her...when I struck the queen. She could've lived, underwater... Marin is going away... I... need to go too. Going where? I guess I'll find out along the way.) "Not alone, you're not. I'm with you Marin. Always."
She smiled. Not a distant smile, like what she had been doing for the past two weeks. A genuine smile. "Thank you, love. Now we need four things, a feather from the largest bird in Tal Talk Mountains, a freezing rock inside a volcano, our hair, and a treasure of Koholint that allows the dead to come back to life."
"Well, make that two things then. Our hair, well, duh. And I just picked this up, a new song for my ocarina, with the power to return the dead back to life (PLOT CONVENIENCE). So now it's just off to these new places. According to the atlus in the village, Eagle's Tower and Turtle Rock sound like our places to be. Let's go!"
