Commander Aelaru glared down at the dark elf that had caused so much trouble and contemplated the situation he’d found himself in. The alliance treaty was currently being kept at the fortress for safe keeping. They had gotten word that the dark elves had already stolen the copy of the treaty the humans had in their possession. So, the copy now hidden here was the single remaining one. And it was dangerous to keep it here now that they’d captured him. But they couldn’t send the treaty away for the same reason, it was possible that he was not alone. Yet they couldn’t kill him until they knew if he was aware of the treaty’s presence. This incident had the makings of a serious security breach as well as a diplomatic nightmare.
He'd previously sent word to the humans that they could send a small party to the fortress, and they could make another copy for themselves. Of course, that had been before they’d found and captured this mongrel. The humans had agreed and were sending the party, along with both their delegate and the ambassador who’d helped to write the treaty, to ensure that it was as they remembered. And there was no reliable way to contact them in transit. If anything happened while they were here, it could seriously undermine their efforts to align with the humans, who currently didn’t have a good reason to be involved in a conflict with the dark elves. For the past seventy years or so there had been relative peace between the humans and their dark cousins. Which was not something King Rarith particularly wanted to upend for any reason.
He glanced at the door, remembering the odd assortment of weapons and broken armor that had been removed from the room. It didn’t make sense. He was far too skilled to have such poor equipment. Unless he had at one point been part of their military and had either been dismissed from service or had deserted. Both options were plausible.
While rare, it wasn’t unheard of for dark elves to desert. Although usually they were hunted down and killed by dark elven death squads before they could do any actual harm. He’d had the misfortune of witnessing such an event once. It wasn’t a pleasant memory.
And there’d certainly been those that had been dismissed before. Soldiers that had been dismissed from service generally ended up as mercenaries for hire. Perhaps that’s what he was. A disgraced soldier who’d been hired to carry out an unknown assignment. Which was still a troubling prospect.
But, if he were no longer in military service, then he’d no way of knowing about the treaty at all. Their intelligence operatives had already confirmed that only the most senior officials and service members were aware that the treaty existed, despite all efforts to the contrary. A deserter or dismissed soldier would have absolutely no knowledge of it.
The guard that had foolishly left his weapons and armor in the room had already been punished and the equipment sent to be destroyed. Since they were of inferior quality, he saw no reason to keep them around. The dwarves could smelt them down and use the raw material for something else. His gaze flickered to the iron manacles. Perhaps the dwarves could use the material to create steel shackles and chains. The last set had broken far to easily. And he was none too certain of this set.
There was also the matter of Starr. Why hadn’t she removed all the items from the room herself? Surely, she’d noticed them. Then again, the hour had been late, and she’d just woken up. Perhaps it’d been an innocent mistake. A grave mistake that’d nearly cost her, her life, but an honest mistake none-the-less. He decided that she’d suffered enough as it was and wouldn’t order any punishments. The attack on her life and modesty would be more than sufficient to serve as a reminder to be careful in the future.
Shin watched the emotions play across the commander’s face. It’d become clear to him some time ago that the elf had no intention of speaking to him. The door scraped open, and another elf slipped into the room.
The elf looked at Shin nervously and then approached the Commander. With one final look at Shin, the elf turned her back on him and spoke lowly and rapidly. Shin kept his face devoid of emotion as he listened to the conversation.
“Einao sent me to inform you of our squad’s assignment.” She waited for Aelaru to nod before she continued. “We could find nothing, no trace of him. We stayed out all the remainder of the night and only turned back when the storm rolled in. Einao personally believes that he was just passing through the area.”
Aelaru's gaze narrowed on the dark elf before he leveled it on the subordinate in front of him. “And what do you think?”
The young knight was surprised that Aelaru would want her opinion and it showed for a moment before she collected herself. She thought over what she’d seen and had heard. “I suppose that it could be possible...”
“But...” Aelaru prompted her.
“Wouldn’t it be unlikely, however possible, for him to be so skilled and yet not attached to one of their military units somewhere on the front lines with the orc’s?”
Aelaru nodded, impressed by the young knight’s line of thinking. “Good job. That is indeed unlikely.” With a nod towards the door, he politely dismissed her. Einao was teaching them well.
Once again grateful to the Master that had deigned to take him under his wing and teach him the language of the light elves, Shin now knew they had no idea that he’d been watching the fortress for weeks. His gaze sharpened on the Commander as he came away from the table slowly.
Aelaru stalked over to Shin and stood over him for long moments, the urge to stomp the dark elf’s face was nearly overwhelming. He resisted the temptation however and settled for curling his lip in a sneer and viciously cursing him instead before leaving the prison cell. Not only was it unbecoming of a leader to react by kicking a captive, but torture was the work of interrogators.
Shin finally relaxed as completely as possible. For now, he needed to sleep while he could. Who knew when someone would be back in to torment him. Closing his eyes, he forced all thoughts from his mind and drifted off to sleep.

When Starr awakened next, she had no idea where she was. Looking around, she couldn’t see anything. Panic set in and she started to thrash wildly.
“Easy, easy!” Einao exclaimed in surprise as he was ripped from his own sleep. A quick spell caused all the candelabras to flash to life.
As the room filled with light from the enchanted flames, Starr realized she was in their bedroom. “I thought...lounge...?” She stuttered in sleepy confusion.
“I moved us in here.” He reassured her, scooting closer to her, pulling some of the blankets that were now tangled around her form away from her. She looked lost, like she had when he’d first approached her months ago right after the archer had struck her. Leaning forward, he kissed her forehead tenderly. She’d been sleeping a good many hours now. They had both spent most of the day sleeping on the chaise and then when he’d gotten up and moved her to the bed it was already dusk. It was now the middle of the night. She’d slept the entire day and most of the night.
“Are you hungry?” He asked.
She shook her head no, relaxing back into the soft mattress. For long moments she simply lay there, trying to figure out what had woken her. With a sigh, she closed her eyes again, ready to try to go back to sleep. However as soon as her eyes closed, an image of the dark elf appeared in her mind.
She bolted upright in bed, once again startling Einao. Gazing at her with a critical eye, he stood up, pulling the covers off her as he did so. “Come on. You haven’t eaten in a long while. A bit of food in you will do some good.” He cut off her protestations. “I’m not taking no for an answer. Get up.”
Starr glared at him and then huffed before finally standing. She’d seen this stubbornness from him before. While irritating, she knew it was borne from care and if needed he’d drag her to the kitchens to eat. Stretching, she noticed that her aches and pains were greatly diminished. The only two that still bothered her were the one from the archer, and the one inflicted on her stomach. And even that one was hurting less than before. Grabbing a simple cotton robe, she wrapped it around herself and followed Einao to the kitchens.
For several hours, the two simply remained in the kitchens while she nibbled on various foods. She didn’t eat much of any one thing, mainly because everything Einao placed in front of her didn’t look appealing. Once the cooking staff came in, they took pity on her and laughingly shooed Einao out and fixed her a proper breakfast which she ate with satisfaction.
Standing outside in the bright sunlight, she knew that by now Einao was off on his assigned patrols. After that, he had to train some of the younger guards. This meant that she essentially had the day to herself. Strolling along around the fortress, her eyes eventually fell on the stone brig, and she stopped in her tracks.
Anger and shame suffused her being. Shame for her actions, anger at the injuries he’d inflicted, and anger directed at herself. As she watched, a human she recognized strode toward the door of the brig. The knight was quite capable, but she wasn’t sure if he was capable enough. She’d bested him several times, even while injured. Leaning against the wooden wall of a storehouse, she decided to watch and see how long the knight took to question the dark elf.
The knight disappeared inside the brig and didn’t return for several minutes. When he did, he was yelling for more guards and bits of his armor were clearly damaged. The guards and quite a few dwarves disappeared inside the brig and didn’t return for nearly half an hour. Commander Aelaru came to investigate the incident.
The words the dark elf had last spoken to her filled her mind. That he’d kill anyone else who attempted to interrogate him. She turned away and walked to the training fields.
Once there, she snatched a training bow and dagger. In battle, she wouldn’t have gotten a reprieve because of her injuries. Neither would she get one now. Calling over to one of the top trainers, she requested that he spar with her.
The trainer looked at her with some trepidation. Even though the higher ranks considered her to be nearly useless since her former prowess with a bow had been greatly diminished, she was still formidable and learning to integrate both her spell and bow skills. However, she’d just been recently injured, and worse. The healers had demanded she rest... But he could see the determination in her eyes and simply agreed. Nodding his head, he muttered. “As long as you don’t overextend yourself. If you do, I will be answering to Commander Aelaru.”
Starr smiled happily while answering in an understanding tone. “Agreed.” The two spent hours training and by the end of the session she felt better. Sore and tired, but better.
That evening, after the meal, Einao decided to surprise her in their bathing quarters. He found her dozing in the large stone hot basin. Silently he slipped into the water. Initially he’d been irritated that she’d ignored the healer’s orders and had practiced, something he’d heard about through gossip. However, it proved to him yet again that the military had made a mistake in their initial assessment. Something he knew Commander Aelaru also believed, since he was allowing her to recover and retrain here.
As his eyes trailed over her relaxed and dozing form, he felt the sudden urge to finish what they’d started the other night. Gently, he skimmed his hands over her flesh. Gliding them down her stomach and to the apex of her thighs. Slowly he nudged her legs further apart, his hand ghosting over her in a light caress.
Leaning his head down, he kissed the tops of her breasts slowly as his fingers dipped inside the cleft in her thighs, rubbing her slowly and methodically. Her breathing began to speed up and her legs parted further own their own. Einao grinned against her breast before taking the tip of her nipple in his mouth and sucking on it gently, pressing his tongue against it.
Her hips began to buck upward rhythmically, and he dipped his middle finger within her hot and now thoroughly wet sheath. With great care, he slowly pumped his finger in and out of her while using his thumb to rub at her love button.
Starr’s eyes fluttered open and looked down upon the blonde head of her lover. Her hands reached out and gripped his length slowly, stroking him up and down. Einao moaned in response before releasing her breast from his mouth and kissing her.
Pulling her off the small, submerged seat, he pulled them into the depths of the water, wrapping her legs around his waist and thrusting into her. He moaned at the feel of her around him. Bouncing her up and down lightly, he positioned his hand at the small of her back and tilted her upper body away from him. This allowed him to slide deeper into her warmth while affording him the ability to nibble and suck on her breasts.
While he thoroughly enjoyed her wild side from the other night, this was what he preferred. Gentle lovemaking. His thoughts were broken when Starr leaned back forward and began to raise and lower herself on him quickly. Taking this as a sign of her impending completion, he thrust quickly into her, attempting to catch up and within moments reached his own completion.
Starr bit back a groan of frustration as she felt him slip from her. Wordlessly her legs dropped from his waist, and she stood in the middle of the basin, staring glumly at the water. It was just as she’d feared. It hadn’t been enough... Her thoughts were derailed as Einao leaned down and kissed her. She noticed belatedly that he’d already finished bathing and was now informing her that he was going to bed. Nodding wordlessly, she watched him towel off and leave the room.
Wading back to the bench, she sat on it and stared at nothing for a long while. The urge to find completion wouldn’t leave her and with a furtive look at the entrance of the bathing quarters, she spelled the door so that it was frozen shut.
At first, she meant to do nothing more than find her own release as quickly as possible and return to their bed. However, as she pumped her own fingers within herself and teased her own love button, her mind swiftly returned to the dark elf, and the brief imaginings that her brain had supplied her while she’d been brazenly fucking him in the brig. With a surprised gasp she came, hard and fast, her legs shaking uncontrollably.
After cleaning herself up and finishing her own bathing, she sat in the lounge for hours. She’d poured herself some more wine and was now staring silently into the fire. She was angry with herself. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t relieved herself in the past. But she’d never before imagined a dark elf while doing so. The other light elves and the odd human here and there yes, dark elves no.
A loud commotion from outside grabbed her attention. Moving swiftly to the window, she looked outside. In the darkness, she could see a large crowd gathered around the brig. The sounds of fighting reached her ears. Her hand tightened on the glass of wine as she saw a body brought forth, carried by several others. The light of several powerful healing spells surrounded it for long minutes. And then came the final spell. The distinctive calming spell used only to help the soul of the lost find their way peacefully to Eva’s sacred deth lua fis. The human’s she’d known simply referred to it as heaven.
Her head bowed in both respect for the dead, and dread. The dark elf was making good on his earlier threat it seemed. As she continued to watch, three more bodies were brought out, and just like the first, healing attempts proved futile, and their souls were also guided to the afterlife.
Her hand clenched into a fist. Four had died tonight. Four more on top of those he’d killed the night they’d caught him. She vowed no more lives would be lost if she could help it.
Meanwhile, in the cell, Shin spat out the blood that had pooled in his mouth. He was bleeding from numerous cuts and other assorted injuries. Still, the beatings were nothing to what he’d suffered during his previous trainings. As he watched the commander yell at him, he’d stopped actually listening to what was said long ago, he wondered how many bodies it would take before she returned to question him again.
