The meeting felt like it had gone on for an eternity and Lyja felt her head nod more than once. She was always thankful for her veil in situations like this, she didn’t have to stifle her yawns, simply keep them quiet. The Ragnarssons had come to them asking them to stay with the Army and the Volur had agreed. On certain conditions of course. They were to be guarded day and night, housed in buildings where available, tribute paid in the form of silver and Thralls and a temple built in honor of the Gods.In return the Volur would use their Seidr. To help in battle, heal the wounded and see their dead to Valhalla. When everyone was satisfied and the brothers turned to leave Una called after Ivarr.
“Not you boy,you stay”.It rankled Ivarr the way she insisted on calling him boy and she knew it.Ubba slapped him on the back giving his shoulders a good natured shake, smirking as he left.Halfdan walked away shaking his head “Make it quick Ivarr” he called over his shoulder.Ivarr stood before her ready for what she had to say “How dare you!”, she said raising her voice “You accost my volur making demands already denied you!You place your hands on a Priestess in anger! The disrespect you have shown will not be forgotten!”The three novices stood staring at the floor, having been on the sharp side of Una’s tongue before, they knew better than to draw attention.None of them had uttered a word about what had happened at the river but there were no secrets with her. “What do you have to say for yourself?” He stood there fuming, unused to being spoken to in such a manner,Ivarr answered to no one, except perhaps Halfdan and only grudgingly did he do that. She banged her staff on the ground “Well?”Ivarr thought carefully, eventually he said “I apologise for upsetting your volur” he gave the girls a sideways glance “It will not happen again”.“It had better not” she said with an ominous air “Now get out of my sight”.Ivarr walked out muttering under his breath.
“Now you three, come here.Did you think I didn’t know?” Lyja stepped forward “It was my fault,I’m sorry” she said quickly, trying to shield her sisters.“No it was his” she said wearily, sitting back in her chair “The man never listens, always charges in without a thought for anyone but himself. Selfish and always has been”.She paused, considering “You told him his fate?”.“Not all of it but he was satisfied with the little I told him”.“You gave the little boy what he wanted,” she scoffed. Softening her words she said”Your gift is not a toy to be played with Lyja, you should place more value in it.“I thought it was important to look.” Lyja said, trying to find the words. “I thought I might have missed something” “And had you?”Una inquired leaning forward.Lyja shook her head “Nothing important”.Una gave her another one of her unreadable looks and dismissed them, calling for Halla as they left.
A feast was held in honor of the Volur now that they had agreed to stay. They occupied their usual place at the top table with the Ragnarssons and some of the Jarls. The newest, Hemming had come all the way from Norway and his son Vili had caused quite a stir in the village. You would think they had never seen a man before the way they were carrying on.The food and drink flowed and there was much patting of the backs and swearing of oaths and all that.A band of Gleemen had turned up,filling the air with music. She looked up to see Ivarr staring at her.She blushed, how long had he been watching her?
Ivarr couldn’t take his eyes off of the little Volva. Her braid was atop her head like a crown, little flowers embedded in the dark brown links. He shook himself mentally when he saw that she had caught him looking. He stood and walked out into the dark thinking about what had happened between them. She feared him that much was evident,he had in all essence raped her.He was not himself when he had done it he told himself and she had consented to it.The blame lay with Una if anywhere,of this he was certain.Still the way the girl looked at him was unsettling. The way he has acted towards her since had been less than honourable especially since she had done what he had asked, given him the augery he had asked for despite the trouble she knew it would cause her.His mind decided,he walked around the Longhouse heading towards the entrance, when who did he catch sight of?
Lyja felt uncomfortable under his gaze, after all that had happened between them this past week she just wanted it to be over. She turned trying to look casual, checking if he was still looking.Sighing in relief she relaxed a little,he was gone. She stood and excused herself, she needed to go outside and cool her burning cheeks. She walked around the longhouse to the quieter side of the building, taking in the cool air. When she felt a hand grab at her wrist dragging her into the shadows.Lyja reached for her dagger, half unsheathing it before her hand was ripped away and forced to join the other pinned above her head. “Let me go Ivarr”she said indignantly, he laughed derisively “So you can go tell that dried up old bitch Una?”. “She will have you flogged if you touch me!”. “Calm down,I’m not going to hurt you”. “You're doing it now,” Lyja said angrily. He went quiet, it was too dark to see his expression but his tone softened. “If I let you go will you stay?” He asked. “No, I’ll l get in to trouble again, and just so you know i didn't tell her about the river.I don't know how she found out”.”Then I suppose we are stuck like this” he stated with mock disappointment.Lyja tried to raise her knee but he was ready “Hey hey,no need for that” and pushed his hips into her holding her against the wall of the longhouse “What do you want” she said trying to push him away.He brought his mouth to her ear and said “Relax, just tell me your name and i'll let you go”.He was impossibly close.Calling to mind the night of the Ritual. The thought making her flush again. She caught his scent. All leather and sweat ”Oh fuck” she thought as her body began to react to his proximity. “My name is Lyja. Now let me go!”. “Oh come on,” He laughed “I thought you would have had more fight than that”. “Let.me.go.Now!”.He brought his mouth back to her ear.She felt his wet lip on its shell, his warm,mead-sweet breath tickling her neck, eliciting flutters between her legs, she turned her head slightly leaning into his scent. “I’m sorry for what I did Lyja”.
Lyja stopped fighting, letting her tense muscles relax.Ivarr let her go stepping back into the dim torchlight. She rubbed at her wrists “You could have just said that, there was no need for this” she said angrily.Ivarr smirked, “You would not have listened”. “True” she agreed.Lyja turned to leave. “And I wanted to thank you for listening to me the other day.You could have told me to piss off but you didn’t”.She stopped and turned back. “I didn’t do it for you” she said walking to the railing “I thought I might have missed something”. “Nonetheless” he said, coming closer.“So what did this dragon do that made you want him dead so badly?” Lyja sensed the air change immediately. “Drink?” He asked after a long pause.”Ja” she said, taking the offered flask. She knocked back a shot and cleared her burning throat, handing it back. She exhaled loudly “What’s that?”. Ivarr laughed quietly “Never had voda?” Lyja shook her head “So are you going to tell me?”.“I’m surprised you don’t know, everyone else does”.He began taking a deep breath “King Rhodri of the Britons, when I was younger I was raiding the Western coast with my crew.We came ashore in his lands, pillaged the villages inland. He drew us into a fight on unfamiliar ground,I got too cocky.Turns out it was a swamp,my crew and I…we got stuck. He slaughtered my men, scarred my face so I would carry the shame with me always. That bacraut denied good warriors Valhalla.I had to leave them in the muck to rot.”
Lyja nodded in the dark at things she had seen in her vision.Understanding Ivarr a little bit more. He carried a heavy weight with him.“There is no honor in what he did,the shame is his,not yours”.Ivarr turned towards her “I know” he said quietly “There are not many that would agree with you” he stepped towards her and leaned on the rail, passing her the flask.Lyja accepted it taking another swig and handing it back. “They have not seen as I have” she said gently. “The scars of battle run deeper in the mind”.Ivarr went quiet again as he thought about her words, passing the voda between them in the silence “I don’t deserve your kindness” he said after a long pause. “No you don't,” Lyja agreed, forgetting herself. The strong Rus drink clouding her judgement. “You're always so angry about everything,do you not think if you perhaps accepted responsibility for your actions, you might be able to find some peace?Ivarr stared at her, speechless for once. “I’m sorry I should not have said that,it's none of my business,my tongue loosens when I drink too much” she slurred. She turned to look at him but he had already disappeared into the shadows.
When she returned to the feast Ivarr was already back in his seat.Cup in hand, deep in conversation with one of the newcomer Jarls.Lyja walked unsteadily back to her seat after filling a cup from the mead trough. She had not long since sat down when Una stood addressing the room. She banged her staff on the wooden floor calling for attention. “The volur have agreed to stay with your Great Army,we will heal your warriors and see your dead to valhalla.Together we will bring Hel to this land and avenge our King Ragnar!”.The room cheered, banging their cups and stamping their feet.
The Gleemen began to play again,a merry tune that got the young girls on their feet.Lyja found herself envying them their freedom. It would not do for a Volva to be caught doing something so frivolous as dancing. She could feel Inga tapping her feet in the seat next to her,she imagined grabbing her by the hand and dancing with the others, making her smile at the thought of scandalising the Elders.Catching the eye of the tall, handsome newcomer Vili. The smile faded from her lips quickly and she averted her eyes. “Shit he’s coming over” she thought aghast. He bowed deeply before the Volur and introduced himself. “Oh we have heard all about you” Inga said with a smile.Vili laughed “Nothing bad I hope”. “Give it time, '' Asdis said. “About nine months should do it”.Inga snorted out her drink and Lyja sniggered behind her hand. They watched him walk away confused and embarrassed.Halla slammed down her cup on the table making their heads pivot towards her as she gave them daggers. The feast wound on and Lyja managed to put Ivarr from her mind for a while as she enjoyed the music. Many of the Jarls came to their table to pay their respects, mostly speaking with Una.When it was time to leave Lyja was in good spirits for the first time in days, holding hands with Inga and Asdis as they skipped back to their tent in the dark.Una smiled as she watched them “Enjoy yourselves while you can my girls,if only they knew what is to come”.
Ivarr was a belligerent drunk. His eyes wandered around the room looking for trouble. His eyes fell on an unlucky warrior who had the misfortune of meeting his gaze.Ivarr stood “The fuck are you looking at”.The man shook his head, looking around for support that had drifted away leaving a space where it was once crowded.”You got something to say?” Ivarr walked over head butting the poor man in the nose, grabbing his tunic before he staggered and pulled him back in for another one.Faravid pulled Ivarr back by the belt, narrowly avoiding his fists but copping a couple of elbows to the ribs as Ivarr wriggled free and back into the fray. The warriors people had closed ranks.Ivarr dove into them, knocking a few of them to the floor. They sprawled drunkenly, kicking and flailing at each other.Halfdan grabbed him by the scruff and dragged him up,pushing him back towards his seat “Get the fuck off me!” Ivarr shouted.“What’s gotten into you”. Halfdan hissed angrily. “You are going to destroy our alliances before we’ve even broken camp.Pull yourself together”.Ivarr stomped off to his room barging through the crowd. He fell back onto his bed.He rubbed his palms over his face ”Fucking witch had no right” he thought angrily but her words had struck deep. His memories drifted back to his disgraceful return.Having to explain to his father what had happened.Having it thrown in his face at every opportunity. His opinions dismissed because of one mistake.Having to claw his respect back…It had taken years.“She knows nothing”.His throat felt tight and his eyes burned. He slipped into a deep sleep thinking on her words.
