Starr glanced warily at the dark elf behind her before continuing to lead them through the hidden passages. Suppressing a yawn, she shook her head, trying to wake up. She’d barely slept at all. Their trek through the tunnels had taken on a rather strange feel and it made her even more uneasy about him.
It had started the moment he’d suddenly stopped without explanation with a dangerous countenance. Since then, he’d largely been silent. The silence was more unsettling than his attempts to strike up a genial conversation with her. “In a few hours, we will reach the village.” She stated in a hushed tone, unsure of exactly why she was speaking so softly. “While the Elders might have requested the help of your kind, I wouldn’t expect a warm welcome. From them or the general population.” Especially the folk who had rarely, if ever, left the village.
“I’m not worried about it.” Shin responded. He’d long understood that most light elves wouldn’t welcome him warmly. Even those who’d gradually learned to trust him, slight as that trust was, had never welcomed him. Now, they would all perish. There wasn’t a reason to worry about it anymore.
He focused on remembering the way they’d come so that he could retrace his steps later. It would’ve been best if he could’ve just taken off with her the moment the idea sprung to mind. But BaelAun was expecting him to return to the unit. If he failed to show, and failed to show with her with him as ordered, BaelAun would have him relentlessly hunted and executed.
Not to mention, there were far too many trailing units behind BaelAun’s regiment for him to risk exiting the tunnels with her yet. He needed a plan.
Starr huffed as she stomped her foot. “Are you even listening to me?”
Shin’s gaze refocused on her and his chin inclined in question.
“You weren’t.” Came her flat reply to his silent question. “Your name. I’m going to need to know your name if I’m to introduce you to Asterios.” She stated impatiently.
“Shin.”
Her eyes blinked in confusion as she struggled to keep a confused frown from her face. What the hell kind of name was that?
“What’s yours?” He asked.
“Starr.” She stated simply, turning her back to him and continuing their journey.
The two continued their journey for about an hour longer before he paused and canted his head to the left. Upon noticing that he’d once again stopped, Starr turned and began to question him but fell silent when he raised his hand up. Hearing the low rumble again, he strained his ears.
Suddenly he lunged backward with a savage curse. Turning to her, he pushed her in front of him and propelled her along the tunnel with a rough and sharp shove. “Move!” Before Starr could respond, the side of the tunnel exploded inward, sending debris everywhere and six large orcs barged inside, weapons drawn.
Turning swiftly, Shin immediately sliced into the throat of the one nearest him while kicking viciously at another that had attempted to attack him. The sound of the bow being drawn reached his ears a split second before an arrow lodged in the skull of the third orc.
As he watched the body fall, he felt the fourth orc’s weapon slice into his armor. Ignoring the pain, he roared at the elf behind him. “I said move!”
“I don’t obey you!” She snapped angrily as her arrow snapped harmlessly off the hardened armor of another orc. The orc raised to his full impressive height, towering over the dark elf that was between it and her. The brutish creature raised a massive sword high and both Starr and Shin attacked at the same time. Her arrow landed in the orc’s sternum, where the armor had been pulled up by the motion of lifting the sword. Shin’s dagger had found it’s way to the soft and vulnerable underarm. Leaping back, he landed beside her and watched as the orc tried vainly to stop the bleeding.
However, there were still three orc’s facing them, and he could hear more coming. Wrenching a dagger free from it’s hiding place, he hurled it at the largest orc. The dagger pierced the throat and the orc stumbled back, blindly reaching for the blade as he began to bleed to death. While the remaining two orcs attempted to get past the first one, Shin gripped Starr’s wrist and pulled her along with him back down the tunnel in the opposite direction of travel from the village. “There are too many of them outside!” He snapped as he dragged her along.
Starr tried several times to lead them back to the village, but now that the orcs had discovered the hidden passages, they were intent on destroying them. As they paused to catch their breath, a loud whooshing sound filled their ears as a gust of hot air rushed past them. “Get us out of here! Now!” Barked Shin, realizing that the orcs had set the passages ablaze.
As she began to lead them in another direction, they heard and felt another onrushing of hot air coming from that same direction. Another fire had been placed in the direction they needed to travel, blocking their only escape route.
Looking back in the direction they’d come from, he could see an unsettling orange glow that was getting brighter by the second. Pulling his sword, he took determined swings at the branch walls of the tunnel. Aiming her bow, Starr fired at the wall, combining her attacks with his in a desperate bid to get out of the tunnel.
As Shin hacked at the tunnel, he saw the first tell-tale sign that the magic holding the tunnel together was coming apart. The magic rippled and twisted on itself. Threads of magic, holding the branches together began to glow brightly. Sensing extreme danger, Shin turned and pulled the elf to him tightly while dropping his sword and reaching for a blessed scroll of escape.
The magic contained in the scroll encased them pulled them to safety as the entire tunnel system burst into flames around them.
