Chapter 3: Mina
*Wanted, Dead or Alive: Jack Farlane, for murder, treason, and dereliction of duty. Reward: 5000 gold pieces. Considered armed and dangerous. If found, report to the authorities immediately.*
Shion kept Jack’s hood low on her face as she walked quickly through the small town. They needed supplies, and Jack’s face was on every wall and his name on every lip. So she picked up what she could, now that her wound was no longer as painful. She bought a few things, but slipped a few extras when she could. Jack was waiting back at their camp, a few kilometers outside of the town. Although she knew that she shouldn’t steal from these people, she also knew that things for the two of them would get desperate sooner rather than later. So, while she did not want to resort to theft, she was unfortunately getting better at it. With a good haul, she toted the food and supplies back to Jack, who, as it turns out, was an excellent chef. A few vegetables and some meat, and the two could eat contently that evening.
While Shion’s physical injury was healing without too much pain, Jack was still recovering from his killing of the week prior. His hands still shook when he was faced with death of any kind. But he forced himself to shoot at game during their retreat into Nohr, to kill the animal so the two humans could survive another day, and Jack knew that it was this or nothing, as both Shion and himself would both die if he didn’t do something. With a few breathing exercises taught by Shion, his crack aim sniped a pheasant one day, and a young buck the next, which kept them going for several days more. But it was still an unpleasant thing for him, and he often needed a few seconds to stop himself from vomiting as he saw their death throes.
That night, there was a light snowfall, dancing through the twilight. The orange glow of the fire sustaining the warmth that the two felt as the winter approached. Shion was happy that her Pegasus Knight gloves that she always had on were well insulated. The only sound was the crack of the burning logs, and it had stayed that way for about an hour after they had finished their dinner.
“I had an older brother, once.” Jack started, his eyes watching the flame dancers stab the night air. “I barely remember him, and he… he left before Mina was born. He was… gifted, you might say. He couldn’t really talk too well to people, but he was the smartest kid in the school. But that didn’t win him any friends, as he was constantly bullied and picked on for being ‘different’ from everyone else. He always had these crazy ideas of magic. I barely understood any of it, but I listened anyway.” His eyes grew dimmer. “One day, he told me of a really powerful spell that he had made. It… It made the wearer immune to pain, he said. As a kid, I was a bit of a crybaby, so he wanted to try it out… and he needed a test subject.”
Shion picked up on what he was insinuating.”...That was you, I’m assuming?” She was both worried and curious as to where the story was going.
Jack nodded. “That was me. He cast the spell on me, and then he…” Jack took a breath. “He took a knife and cut my arm.” Jack rolled up his sleeve to show a faint, off-coloured line across his wrist. Shion’s eyes widened as she saw the proof of Jack’s abuse. “I know what the scar looks like, but it’s not that, promise.” He smiled weakly. Shion was only half convinced. “Anyway…My brother, he… He was emboldened by the success, because I didn’t cry out in pain, not even a little. So he… He ran. And I never saw him again.”
“So, is your brother still out there?”
“No… his…” Jack took another breath. “His body was found at the bottom of a large cliff. I guess he cast the spell on himself… so he could die painlessly.” One lone tear ran down his face. “They cremated him and told us about it when they gave us the ashes.”
Shion was silent for a little. A million different things could be said, to comfort him, to console him, to lecture him, to guide him. But she settled on one lingering question. “...Why are you telling me this? Don’t… Don’t tell me that you haven’t told anyone else this.”
“Mina knows nothing. She thinks I was her only brother. Dad left with some dancing girl a third of his age after Mina was born, and Mom died during an attack from Hoshido as she was tending to the wounded in a field hospital near the Bottomless Canyon.” Shion’s heart dropped as he said this. “So I’m the only thing to a family that she has left.” Jack looked like he was going to cry, but he kept it in, reaffirming his resolve. “That’s why I have to protect her.”
Shion’s heart could almost be heard, as it was pounding so loudly. “Was…Was Prince Xander’s retainer injured there?” Shion was hesitant to hear the answer.
“Hmm? Uh… I think so. I guess that’s why they attacked, to kill off such a high-ranking general. But mum… was caught up in it and died… But how did you know that?”
“Oh, it was…um, pretty big news in Hoshido.” Despite her heart beating hard, Shion couldn’t help but be awestruck. Here she was, running away from her cushy life in Hoshido with this man who has known this terrible loss all his life. Well, not ALL cushy, she told herself. But not only that, but he just casually dropped that their parents are both gone, and that he basically had to raise his sister by himself? “I’m… so sorry, Jack… I… I didn’t know.”
Jack brushed her aside. “Unless you were dad’s hussy or the one who killed mom, you have nothing to apologize for.” He weakly smiled, but it was a genuine one. “I guess the fire tonight… reminded me of Alex. It was lightly snowing that day too.”
Shion was taken aback at his honest reply. Most people just take words like that at face value and accept the praise. She didn’t deserve it, after what she… “...Do you…trust me?” She eventually said.
“Hmm?” Jack wiped off his face.
“Do you trust me, Jack?” Shion looked in his eyes sincerely. “This is not…This is heavy, Jack. This isn’t something that you should just tell anyone. This is… a very serious matter.” Her eyes looked into his, intent on finding the man beneath. “Are you…okay?”
Jack, seemingly up to her plan, put up his walls again. “...Never better.” And the duo went to sleep on that note, both their stomachs and minds full.

They arrived at Windmire a few days later. Jack knew that it was the riskiest move, but a majority of the Nohrian army was busy with the now-ongoing war, and they were intent on conquering nearby countries to build their army up, so they decided that it was as safe as it was ever going to be. Avoiding his usual route through the alleys, he led Shion through the twisting cobblestone veins, and arrived at his house before the day was even half passed, and they slipped inside. What Jack saw stopped his heart.
Everything was torn up. Everything. From the small pictures of their family to the furniture, to the doors, everything was a disaster. An urn on the mantleplace was shattered, the ashes scattered all over the room. It was as if there was a hurricane just in their little hovel. He ran into Mina’s room, and it had fared no better, with every drawer opened, clothing ripped and burned, all the stuff she had in her closet thrown about every which way. But there was no blood. Jack breathed a bit easier with that fact known. That meant that…Mina was not here, but she was not injured. That made her whereabouts unknown, and that made Jack’s breathing worsen yet again.
Shion subconsciously placed a hand on his shoulder, not even aware herself of performing this act of compassion. “...Maybe she got out? From what you told me, it seems that she’s a pretty smart girl. She probably left when she heard the news of you, and is holed up somewhere. Was there anywhere she stuck around, friends, anything?”
“...She better not have…but she probably did…” Jack wistfully threw out ideas in his head. “She has a few friends, but they aren’t better off than we were, so she’d probably have to work just for food, and with prices how they are…she…” Shion sensed his hesitancy. “Nohr isn’t a place for little girls, or little boys, for that matter.”
Shion put the pieces together. “That’s all the more reason to find her now. If I’m hearing what I think you’re saying, she…” Shion didn’t want to say it either. “...She might be…selling herself.”
Jack weakly nodded affirmation. “Other than…prostitution, the army pays well. But Mina could only get accepted into one of those, and I hope not by choice.” He stood up from the mess, and the duo left the building, slipping out as quickly as they slipped in.

They found a trusted mutual friend of Mina and Jack and they did know Mina’s whereabouts, and he didn’t sell out Jack to the army, much to their relief. But it was as Jack had feared, Mina, a girl barely in her teens, was working in Windmire’s underbelly, selling her body to the highest bidder for coin. Jack was furious that he guessed correctly, but he thanked his friend and they went on their way. Apparently Mina was in a low brow, dingy dug-out of a brothel on the outskirts of the city where the law was lax at best. They crawled their way into the slums, barely able to not gag on the smell. They approached a small hole-in-the-wall building with a bright neon sign that said ‘Adult Entertainment of All Ages’.
“She’s barely past a child, and this…” Shion felt her heart catch in her throat as she imagined the situation. “This is… disgusting. Children… should not ever have to do things like this.” Shion felt her blood boil, while her fists clenched and her body shook. “Give her… Give her childhood back, God damn it.” Tears of anger pooled in her eyes.
Jack was taken aback by how violently this seemed to affect Shion, but he wasn’t much calmer. “Yeah, we’re going in there, kicking ass if we have to, and getting her out, no matter what. Sound like a plan?” The fist bump was a definite answer if he ever heard one.
A scantily clad muscular man was working the counter. “Acht, freash meat. Haveney seen you two before.” His accent was thick, but understandable. “You two looking fer a lad or a lass?”
Jack did the talking, as Shion seemed to be having a moment. “A girl. My sister.”
“Yer sister, laddie? In this place? Far cry fer me to judge, but…”
Jack was losing patience. “Mira.” He used the name that his friend gave him, hating that her pseudonym was so close to the original. “We’re looking for Mira.”
“Acht, the new lass. She’s done a great job here, laddie.” He looks in the ledger, taking his time. “Mira… Mira… ~Mi~ra…Acht, thar she is. She’s booked all this week, lad. When do ye want to see her?” He picked up a pen.
Right now, he thought. He leaned over the counter, into the man’s face. “What room is she in?”
“Cannay tell ya, lad. These be private affairs.” The man pushed him back gently.
Jack smiled politely. “Thank you for your time,” and he pulled a very confused and angry Pegasus Knight out of the building with him.
“What are you doing?” She was furious. “We gotta get her out! You’re going to abandon your sister just like that?!”
“Room 204, the last…client just left.” Jack dug his well-used lockpick out of his pocket, and stretched his arms as he looked at the second floor windows. “Keep an eye out, yeah? And… be ready for trouble.” Shion finally picked up on the plan. A place like this wouldn’t let their golden goose out willingly. She nodded and stood guard as Jack expertly climbed the building as he had done all his life.
Jack entered the small room silently. One faint breathing pattern could be heard, and Jack followed the sound to his sister, lightly sleeping, nude on top of the worn mattress, with a white, sticky substance on her body, especially in the pubic region, which was also soaking into the mattress. His quick eyes scanned her body, and saw rope marks on her wrists and ankles, and she did have an identification number tattooed on her arm, a mark of enslavement. He shook her awake softly and whispered. “Mina, it’s me, Jack. Wake up.”
Mina awoke with a start. “AHH-! What, Jack?!” She covered herself as best she could and flushed pink. “What- Get out of here!”
“Mina, please, be quiet.” Jack’s eyes never broke contact with her own. “I’m here to get you out. We can escape, live quietly, and you don’t need to do this anymore. Please, sister?”
Mina calmed down slightly, but was still flush from her nakedness near her brother. “This is all your fault, Jack! Murder? Treason?! I barely escaped with my life! Another half hour and I’d probably be tortured to death! I have to do this because YOU FUCKED EVERYTHING UP!”
Mina’s words stung from the truth. “Yes. It is all my fault. Had things gone to plan, I’d probably be fighting off Hoshidans right now, and you’d be preparing for your classes. But I…I’m sorry, Mina…”
“Sorry doesn’t cut it. Do you know how hard it’s been…?!” Her face became a mess from the makeup that began to run. “Do you have ANY idea of what I’ve had to do just to make enough money to live? What these animals keep doing to me?! And I couldn’t say no to anything! I just had to take it and let them fuck me and let them do what the wanted with me and I just-”
Jack placed his arms around her and pulled her wet face into his chest, the only sound further were her sobs.
“You don’t like it here, Mina. Let’s go. Let’s leave, and live far away. These bad men can’t hurt you anymore. We can just live in peace and quiet. Does that sound nice?”
“...You and that Hoshidan whore, eh?”
“What?”
“That’s what you mean. You and your little Juliet can live in peace and you’ll just leave me alone again! You never cared about me, only about yourself! You never once loved me or asked me how I was! You never looked at me and said that you were proud of me! Only that I had to do things your way!” Jack said nothing and his eyes fell. “And now you come here, pronouncing yourself a saviour, ready to right all wrongs?! Well, I’ve had it up to here with you!” She quickly stood up and pushed him away. She wiped herself off with a rag before throwing it on the floor and approached the dresser. “...I’ll leave,” she said over her shoulder. “But I don’t want to ever want to see your face again… stranger.” That last word oozed venom.
Jack breathed a sigh of relief. “Mina, they won’t let you walk out of here. Come through the window.” Mina packed what she could carry and reluctantly agreed. Jack climbed out of the window and Mina fell into his arms below, and Jack let her down.
“Mina?” Shion approached the duo. “I’m happy you’re okay.”
“Stay away, Hoshidan. Your kind disgusts me. You’re lucky I don’t stab you here and now.” Mina pulled a small shiv out of her bundle of clothes. Shion kept her distance and Mina returned the weapon to its hiding place. “Well, dear stranger of mine…I’ve walked your path all my life. Now I walk mine, without you.” She turned.
“Wait, M!” Jack pulled out a small sum of coins. “This isn’t much, but it’s all I have. You are my sister, now and forever, and I will always be your brother. No matter what happens, you’ll always have a home with me.” Mina scoffed, but took the coins after some hesitancy. She took one last look at the duo, then ran off.
“You’re letting her go? After all that?”
“I’m not letting her go… Just letting her loose.” Jack felt pride, sadness, loss, and hope all at the same time. “She’s my little girl and I love her, but I have to let her walk her own path, while still letting her know that she has me.”
“...That sounds like something a father would say.” Jack said nothing and took the compliment with a sad smile. “...If you’re sure that she’ll be fine, could we maybe go to Hoshido? I want to see my parents.”
“I guess, based on how the war goes, it may be best to take the Bottomless Canyon path.” Jack filled his lungs with a deep breath and let it out in one long exhale. “Yeah. Let’s go.”
