Dawn was running. She was panting. She was a few years younger, she was a young teen. It was night. The stars above shone down softly upon the alleyway she was moving through. She had a black leather messenger bag on her right hip, the strap to it going over her left shoulder. Shouts sounded out behind her. She had already been shot in the left shoulder as well as her left hip, but she had used an injection of Med-X on herself to keep the pain at bay. She glanced over her shoulder as a few more bullets whizzed around her form. She was dressed in a black pair of dirty pants and an unzipped black leather jacket, gray socks and dark boots on her feet. Underneath her jacket, the only thing she wore was a black sports bra. Dawn had known that she would do a bit of running before she had taken her mission, so she had worn the sports bra to help limit the discomfort of running, as having a bust as large as her's would, indeed, lead to chest pain with excessive running.
She grunted as she hit the ground on her side, sliding along it as she moved behind the cover of a nearby dumpster. She held her FN P90c tight in her hands. She blindfired around the corner of the dumpster for a couple of seconds, bursting bullets. When she stopped, bullets were launched her way once more, whizzing past her side, past the dumpster. She let out a laugh, adrenaline coursing through her. "You think you'll be able to put me down?!" Dawn shouted angrily. "Fire!" A voice commanded in the alley, far behind Dawn. Bullets whizzed past her once more, Dawn not even noticing a bullet graze along her upper arm, which was too close to the edge of the dumpster. When the firing died down, Dawn called out "You still following me, Karl? Is that your voice I hear?" "You're not gonna get away with that stuff, Dawn! This whole idea of your's is fucked!" Dawn laughed loudly and almost hysterically in reply. More angry shots whizzed past her. Dawn blindfired for a few seconds once more, firing past the edge of the dumpster. "Dawn! Hand the shit over and we'll let you go!"
Dawn laughed intensely for several seconds in reply. "Let...Let me go?! You think I'll believe that tired old line? Hah hah hah hah!!" She was grinning as she shouted her words, laughing lightly once more. "You're screwed, Dawn! You can't just keep running! Either you die with the shit or live without it. Those are my terms!" Dawn chuckled for a moment before she called out "You better be ready to kill me then, 'cause I'm not giving this stuff back!" "Fire!" The shouts from both Dawn and the man known only as "Karl" echoed around the alleyway. Dawn felt the bloodlust run strong in her. She had massacred several of her enemy's guards before she had grabbed the merchandise and ran. She wasn't about to let herself be captured. The words "Only the stupid or ill-prepared get caught doing anything by anyone" were continuously running through her mind. She began to feel through her messenger bag. There were several hunks of what were shaped like bricks within. She pulled out two of them, looking at them. They were bricks of Plastique.
Most of the material to the plastic explosive being gray, a long green label was on the top of it, words warningly adorning the label in red. A small black machine was attached to one side of each cube, almost like a timer, having four red numbers on the machine. Each number was set as "0" and glowed with a faint red light, but buttons were on the machine to allow one to change the numbers, to raise or lower them. The numbers were the frequency that the bombs would explode at if they were sent the same frequency from a remote. A red and a black wire ran from the machinery's side to one of the other sides of the plastic explosive, running into the brick. Dawn smiled darkly and pulled out another three bricks, quickly setting the frequency they would all detonate upon as "0231". She pulled out one final object from the messenger bag she had. It looked like a small brick itself, only much small than the plastique. It was coloured yellow, a large red button on the side. A plastic covering was over the button, ensuring that one wouldn't accidentally press it.
A small antenna stuck out from the top, but most of it was compacted into the remote itself, Dawn pulling on it gently and extending it. A twistable knob was on the top by the antenna along with four white numbers, almost like an old-fashioned clock, inside. Dawn twisted the knob until the numbers began to turn, stopping once they read "0231". Dawn placed a piece of plastique by her as bullets kept flying around her, placing another one by it. The bullets stopped. "Come on, Dawn! Let's go, give it up!" Dawn said nothing, grinning darkly to herself. She tossed two of the pieces of plastique across the alley, the pieces landing behind an empty barrel nearby. "What the fuck was that?" She heard someone say. Dawn slipped her FN P90c into her bag before getting up and racing off, holding a brick of plastique in her left hand, the remote to the bombs in her right. She heard the group begin to chase her once more. She tossed the last brick over her shoulder. The group had ran past the dumpster she had been by, stopping once they saw the plastique on the ground in front of them, looking at the piece Dawn had just tossed over her shoulder.
Dawn ran for a few more seconds before she turned to look at them, beginning to laugh like crazy, flipping up the plastic covering of the remote's button, immediately pressing it. The remote let out a beep as it sent out it's frequency command, the plastique hearing the command almost instantly. Three points erupted in a triangle around the several men and women that had chased her: the two bricks that Dawn had placed by the dumpster, the two Dawn had tossed behind the barrel, and the one Dawn had thrown over her shoulder at the men. The explosions shook the ground and blasted the bodies of the men apart in a fountain of blood and chunks of flesh and organs. The walls of the nearby buildings began to crumble and slowly cave into the alleyway. Dawn stopped laughing, raising her eyebrows as she watched the two buildings eventually begin to quickly spill into the alley. She turned and ran once more, running from the collapsing walls, a smile quickly coming back on her face as she moved.
"Dawn? You okay?" Libitina's voice snapped Dawn out of her memories. "Hmm?" Dawn mumbled absent-mindedly, looking to the three sitting at the table with her. She had finished her food first, so she had had time to relax and look out a nearby window, drifting off into her thoughts as she did so. Kid, Dominique, and Libitina were all looking at her curiously. "You look like you...Sort of blanked out." Dominique said. Dawn smiled a little. "Sorry...Just thinking about something. Nothing to worry about." Kid seemed intrigued by what she might have been thinking about. "Want to tell us?" He asked. Dawn looked off to the side, looking through a nearby shattered window. "Just something I did for the Wrights, a long time ago. I was a year or so younger than you at that point, Kid...I was a different type of person, too. Maybe I'll tell you about it later...I'm not really feeling too talkative right now." Kid nodded gently. "Alright...Maybe later, then..." Dawn smiled a little at him, glad that he had let her be and not tried pressing her into talking about her past. Libitina just then finished her food, sighing happily and leaning back in her chair a little, relaxing happily. "Thank you, Dawn...That was really good!" Dawn smiled and said "Think nothing of it." Dominique thanked Dawn as well, Dawn telling her the same thing she had told Libitina. Kid had almost finished his food, focusing more on writing in his journal. He scanned over what he had written...
"Dawn is back. I can't fully put it in words how happy I am that she's back. We told each other that we loved one another last night. Everything feels so perfect...I had a weird dream about Libby...At least, I think it was a dream. I can still remember some of the feelings...But whatever. Dominique looks really pretty right now, she's wearing a new outfit that looks really good on her...She says she wants to eventually get some more reaver-like clothes, though. I don't mind, she'll be pretty regardless."
Kid was satisfied with what he had written. He closed his book and laid it off to the side, placing his pencil by it, as well. He began to eat his food rapidly, finishing it in less than a minute. Kid heard soft footsteps sound out behind him, echoing slightly in the otherwise-silent diner. "Um...E-Excuse me?...Miss?..." Kid heard a little girl's voice say beside him. He looked to his right. Libitina and Dominique were also looking over. A little girl stood by Kid, looking at Libitina. She had incredibly pale skin, almost like her body lacked a single drop of blood in it's veins. Her hair was long and dark, looking a little messy and unkempt, her bangs hanging down on her forehead and shading her eyes slightly. She was wearing a dirty little pink dress with short sleeves, the dress ending just at her knees. Her eyes were a deep, bright green. She seemed a little nervous. Libitina realized the girl was talking to her, smiling a little as she said "Yes?" The little girl shuffled her feet nervously for a moment before looking over her shoulder at the young man sitting on the far side of the room. The man smiled a little and stood up, walking over. "Sorry about her." He said. "She was just interested in your face, she found it really pretty."
Libitina smiled more and looked to the little girl once more. "Thank you, I'm glad you like it." Libitina said cheerily. The little girl turned and hugged the man around the waist, burying her face in his stomach, blush roaring under her cheeks. The man chuckled lightly. "I'm Marv. This shy little girl is Heather." Libitina smiled and leaned over slightly in her chair, tapping Heather on the shoulder with a finger. Heather peeked her head out from Marv's stomach, looking at Libitina with shy eyes. Libitina smiled more as she said "Would you like some face paint, too?" Heather blushed deeply and buried her face back in Marv's stomach again. Dominique smiled. "Look at her, she's so cute!...I was like that when I was her age..." Marv chuckled softly, saying "Heather, she asked you a question...It's rude not to say anything back..." Heather turned her head and looked at Libitina gently, blushing heavily as she nodded gently. Libitina stood up, still smiling. "Come on, let's go to a table nearby so we can both have a seat. I'll give you some face paint, I think I have an idea in mind for you." Heather took one of Marv's hands, pulling him along with her as Libitina guided Heather to a nearby table.
Dawn suddenly stood up and pulled her helmet on, heading for the door to the diner. "Dawn?" Kid asked. Dawn spoke over her shoulder as she moved. "I'm just going out for a minute, don't worry, I'll be right back." Kid watched her with a bit of worry as she left. When she walked outside, Kid whispered to Dominique. "I think something might be bothering Dawn...She's suddenly gotten so quiet since we ate..." Dominique nodded gently. "I know...I don't know what could possibly be bothering her, though..." Kid let out a gentle sigh, wishing he knew if something was on Dawn's mind. Dawn walked outside around to the side of the diner. The cool morning breeze played along her trenchcoat. She leaned against the wall of the diner in silence, reaching up to her head and pulling her helmet off once again. She held her left hand on her hip, keeping her right arm down by her side, gripping her helmet, her thumb on it's inside and the rest of her fingers on the outside of it. Her eyes were a little dark, her face a little serious, as her mind was drawn into her memories of the past once again...
"Come any closer and I'll kill the bitch!" A man stood by the young teen form of Dawn, pointing a pistol down into her chest. Several men stood nearby, pointing pistols of their own at the man. One of them was Joey, the man allied with Dawn that had died during her assault on the Shark Club. "You have no idea how much pain we'll put you through if you kill her!" Joey said warningly. The man glanced at Dawn. She was tied to a chair under a bright ceiling light, wearing a black skirt along with a long-sleeved shirt missing it's left sleeve, the sleeve being torn off just a little past the shoulder. The shirt had a logo on it for some company, the lettering and the picture of it faded with time. She already had blood splattered across her face and chest. She was staring at the man with rage in her eyes. The man cocked back the hammer of his pistol as Joey took another step closer. Dawn was gritting her teeth so hard it was starting to hurt her jaw. A few shots sounded out nearby, outside the warehouse, Joey and the rest looking over to the side, distracted by the sound, looking to a nearby window in the dark warehouse.
The man used the distraction to his advantage, turning and running, sprinting towards a door in a nearby wall. Joey and the rest fired at him, missing him entirely, the man running through the door, pushing it open when he reached it. Dawn couldn't hold back her wrath anymore. "I'll fucking kill you!!" Dawn shouted furiously at the man as he fled. Joey ran over and cut the ropes keeping her to the chair, handing her his pistol as she jumped to her feet. She raced after the man, running like the wind through the door, spotting him going down an alley by the warehouse. She ran through the night, her legs moving quickly in her great strides. She flicked on the safety of her pistol as she neared the man. She let out a cry as she jumped at the man, tackling him to the ground. She pistol-whipped him across the back of the head with the barrel of her pistol a few times before forcing him over onto his back so he was looking up at her. She raised her pistol and jammed it down into the man's left eye, mercilessly ramming the pistol's barrel down into him as hard as she could, earning a loud scream of pain from him.
She turned off the safety of the pistol before rapidly firing several shots into the man's head, killing him with the first but continuing to pull the trigger, regardless. His brain matter spilling to the dark ground beneath him along with bits of his skull and blasts of dark blood, Dawn stood up, Joey and the rest just then running out and meeting her. Joey spotted the man, looking to Dawn a second later. She was panting as she tossed the pistol back to him. "I emptied the clip into his head...Stupid fucker deserved it." Dawn said, almost in a mutter. Joey smiled a little. "...Well, at least one good thing came out of this. I now know you look sexy as hell covered in blood." Dawn turned and walked past him, deliberately bumping her right shoulder into Joey's own. "Don't start, Joey. I'm really not in the mood." Joey chuckled a little, turning and following her with the rest of the men.
Dawn blinked, being drawn out of her memories. Footsteps were approaching. Dawn dropped her helmet to the ground and unshouldered her Gauss Rifle, raising it towards the nearby corner in the diner's outside wall. A figure walked around the corner. It was Kid. He instantly looked surprised to see Dawn with a raised weapon towards him. Dawn's face was surprised and apologetic as she lowered her gun. "Sorry, Kid...I didn't mean to freak you out..." She shouldered her Gauss Rifle, smiling a little then. "Come to check up on me or something?" She asked. Kid relaxed, but his face showed worry. "You were sort of quiet before you left...I was just wondering if anything was bothering you..." Dawn smiled a little more, leaning against the wall behind her once more, looking forwards to the ground. "No, nothing's bothering me...I'm just thinking about stuff that happened before...Sorry if I'm being quiet." Kid walked closer to her. "The stuff that happened before...It bothered you, I guess?..."
Dawn shrugged, unshouldering her Gauss Rifle and standing it against the wall beside her. "Not exactly...It's just that...It's just stuff, everyone goes through stuff...I'm no different. I don't know why I'm thinking about it so much lately...Maybe it's for the best? Remembering your mistakes means that you'll have a better chance of not making them again." Kid stepped even closer, his body now being next to her's. He reached over and held one of her gloved hands. Dawn looked over to his face and smiled again. She released his hand and reached her arms around his shoulders, Kid stepping closer to her front, slipping his arms around her waist, under her trenchcoat. The side of his face against her upper chest over her protective vest, Kid closed his eyes and went a little quiet, himself. Dawn moved her trenchcoat along him slightly, the trenchcoat's excess space spreading out and wrapping around him as well, the two of them essentially sharing the coat. Kid felt safe, snuggled up against her in the confines of the trenchcoat. Dawn kept her arms around him then, holding him close.
The way she had her arms around him, keeping the whole length of her arms around him protectively, it made him feel loved. She rested her chin down on his head, closing her eyes. Nearly a minute later, Dawn almost slipped back into her memories, but Kid's words pulled her back. "Dawn...I love you..." He murmured his words, moving his head, looking up to her neck and chin a little. She looked down into his face quietly for a moment. "I'm not sure if I'm saying it enough...But...I love you, too..." Kid closed his eyes gently, gazing into her face quietly. Dawn kept looking into his eyes, easing her own eyes closed a little. She brought her face down closer to his, closing her eyes, pressing her lips to his. He closed his eyes and kissed her back, a section of her soft, dark bangs drifting down and gently touching the side of his face. They kissed slowly and with feeling, Dawn slowly smoothing one of her hands up to the back of Kid's neck, touching him gently, keeping her hand there. Kid felt fluttering sensations run up inside him at her touch, the two of them kissing a few more times. Her trenchcoat swayed gently around the both of their legs in the morning breeze, adding to the already peaceful feelings running through them.
They stopped kissing several seconds later, Dawn smiling and telling him to turn around. Kid was a little confused, but he did as she bid, turning around, Dawn letting her trenchcoat slip back from around him and rest fully around herself once more. She sat down on the ground, her back still against the wall, spreading her legs a little as she said "Okay, Kid...Sit down...Bring your back against me..." Kid sat down, moving himself back just a few inches until he felt himself going against Dawn's stomach and chest. Dawn wrapped her arms around him, her right arm around his chest, her left arm around his stomach. He rested his hands on her thighs, by his sides. He leaned his head back on her shoulder and kept his face by her's, Dawn smiling with him as they relaxed with one another, the two of them staying in silence from that point onwards.
Dominique watched as Libitina happily painted Heather's face. Heather was very cute and shy at first, but she had soon began to relax and let Libitina paint along her features without hindrance. Dominique thought about Kid. She was happy that he had been okay after the months of being trapped in Vault 17. She was worried that the time there might have affected him, but he seemed relatively fine, especially now that Dawn was back. She had been terrified when she had been separated from him. She thought she was going to die, that he was going to die, as well. But Dawn came out of no where and saved the two of them along with Ronald and the rest, like a pack of the Holy One's own protective anti-virus programs. Dominique wished she still had her weapons with her. She had lost her Razor Claws in the vault, as well as her Pulse Pistol. Kid had lost his Calico Liberty 100, and, unknown to Dominique, Libitina had also lost her weapons, as well. Dominique wondered what Kid and Dawn were up to outside. She smiled a little. She was happy that they were together, she could see the happiness in their eyes when they looked at one another. "Seeing real love...It's special....Especially seeing as how our world is so awful...Something like love still being able to bloom...It's a miracle, truly." Dominique kept thinking in silence, hearing Heather giggle lightly as some of Libitina's paint tickled Heather's cheeks.
A junkie looked to the south in a bleary stupor. He saw what appeared to be a large black mass on the horizon, heading for New Reno, still several miles out. He turned and rushed away, screaming at the top of his lungs, waving his arms like crazy, crying out "The Master's super mutant army is back! Holy shit! They're gonna try to steal my Jet!! Fuuuuuuuck!!" A few other junkies watched lazily as the first sprinted away, wailing like a beast out of somebody's nightmare. "...What was he going on about?" One of them asked. Another snorted slightly. "Fuck if I know. Got any more caps? We might be able to get a hit." The first said "Naw, but...Whatever...I don't have the shakes yet, it's cool..."
Relaxing with Kid in silence gave Dawn time to think of her past again. Lights were flashing around her and her opponent. She was standing in a square ring, the floor being a red mat, the boundaries of the ring being silver poles. She was a little younger still, but not as young as Kid, only a few years younger than she was at present. People were cheering. "Ruby-Red, Hurricane! Ruby-Red, Hurricane!" Ruby-Red was the name Dawn had taken when she had began acting in pornography, but she had used it as her nickname for the boxing ring, as well. Dawn was wearing a black sports bra along with a pair of black shorts, a pair of red boxing gloves on her hands. She had her long, dark hair tied into a bun behind her so it wouldn't get in the way as she moved around. Her opponent was a rather muscular man with light skin like her's, his eyes dark and menacing. His head was shaved clean of hair. He was dressed only in a pair of black shorts, neither of them wearing anything on their feet. He also had red boxing gloves on his hands.
The two of them were in their second round, the fight had just barely started. Hurricane had only landed a single hit upon Dawn, that hit being an uppercut to her stomach. Dawn had been surprised at how strong the man was, the wind being viciously torn from her lungs, but still, she had found enough strength to jump away from the man before he could hit her with any more punches. Dawn was much faster than her opponent. He struck out at her with savage, brutal hits, but he lacked finesse. Dawn was easily able to move away from his hits, move herself around his body and strike out at him when he least expected it. It was the classic battle of speed and agility versus strength and size. Dawn was hitting the man as hard as she could, but it wasn't hurting him as much as she would have liked. She began to strike out at him as quickly as she could, hitting him several times before he could swing a mighty tree trunk of an arm her way.
Finally, the Hurricane began to slow down, growing tired. Dawn was swatting his hands down as he tried to raise them to hit her, he was growing weak enough that she could actually do that. Rapidly hitting him across the face then, she finally wound up and gave him one more hit before the bell rang, a powerful haymaker into the side of his face. The Hurricane's head swung droplets of sweat and blood as her hit connected. The bell rang, but the Hurricane collapsed to the mat. Dawn had knocked him out. The crowd went wild in the dark building, cheering and shouting around the boxing ring. The announcer stepped into the ring and confirmed that Dawn had won by knockout. Dawn raised her fists and grinned, the crowd crying her name in a chant, screaming "Ruby-Red! Ruby-Red! Ruby-Red!"
Dawn drifted out of her memories. She blinked a few times gently, losing her smile. Kid noticed her face, quietly saying "...You were thinking about stuff again, right?..." Dawn glanced to the side, to his face, before looking forwards once more. "Yeah..." She said simply. Kid raised his hands to her's, on his chest and stomach. "Is there anything I can do to help?...Anything?..." Dawn smiled a little at his words. "No...I'm sorry, but...Nothing can make me forget. It's not too bad, though...Most of the stuff I've been through hasn't actually been bad, well, to me, at least...It's just been...Interesting. I appreciate your concern, though..." She turned her head to the side and kissed him on the cheek. "Let's just say you're helping me by simply being who you are, baby..." Kid smiled a little, keeping his hands on Dawn's as they were on his frontside. "If you ever want to t-talk about stuff, I'm here..." Kid said softly. Dawn squeezed him in her arms for a moment. "I know...I'm here for you, too. Maybe I'll tell you about some stuff later...How about...Tonight?..."
Kid nodded a little. "Okay..." Footsteps sounded out nearby, Dawn grabbing her Gauss Rifle with her left hand, holding it by the grip, holding it across Kid and stabilizing it with her right hand. Dominique walked around the corner, Dawn relaxing and loosening her grip on her weapon. Dominique curiously said "I was just wondering what you two were up too, I was wondering if you were safe..." Kid nodded at her. Dominique could tell that the two of them were having a bit of a personal moment, saying that she would be in the diner, waving "goodbye" before turning and walking away. Dawn released her rifle, letting it rest in Kid's lap, keeping her hands on his stomach from behind once again. They relaxed quietly for a few minutes before Dawn gently whispered to Kid. "...I'll never let anything hurt you, Kid..." Kid turned his head and looked into her face quietly. She was looking into his eyes. "I swear it...You never have to feel scared with me...I won't let anything touch you..." Kid closed his eyes wordlessly, moving his face a little closer to her's, rubbing the right side of his forehead against her chin and jaw gently and tenderly.
Dawn smiled a little, feeling him hold onto her hands once more, Dawn holding his hands back, the two of them resting their hands down together on her gun, in his lap. They stayed like that in silence, Kid smiling gently as Dawn pressed a light kiss to his forehead, keeping his face near her's as they felt the cool wasteland breeze run along their bodies, playing along some of Dawn's hair and shifting it along her sides.
