**Installment 30**
Caellia took the full brunt of his charge and neatly turned herself to the left so that she wouldn’t fall directly beneath him, allowing herself to be thrown into the bushes nearby. She decidedly ignored the various scratches that the limbs of the bush were causing and focused entirely on Nathavin, and his dagger. She had every intention of disarming him of that regardless of what happened. Wriggling out of his tight grasp, she gained her footing first.
“Nathavin, I will never forget Goryn. Never.” The words were chillingly whispered as she deftly slid the dagger from its concealed sheath. Caellia backed away a few steps and allowed him to stand fully. “I have taken your dagger when you said I couldn’t. I’m not going to allow you to continue to frighten me indefinitely.” Caellia held back a shiver. Bold words she’d spoken, but could she back them up with a mere dagger? She held his gaze unflinchingly and waited with baited breath for his reaction.
“You become much quicker the calmer you are Caellia. I will not forget this. I admit I should never have underestimated you. But,” he stooped over to pick up the discarded arrow she’d snatched earlier, “that does not mean you can defeat me.” He knocked the arrow in place and held the bow downwards. “You will look me in the eye and repeat my words this day Caellia. Make no mistake, you will not think of Goryn again.”
The dagger flashed as Caellia spun it defiantly, “I don’t have to defeat you Nathavin. I just need to stop you from chasing me.” Her head tilted to one side in thought, “Truly defeating you is something I agree that I can’t do. Merely stopping you for a short time however, should be something that is within my abilities.”
“Do you really believe you can stop me Caellia?” His voice dropped low, barely above a whisper as he pulled the bowstring taut. “Put the dagger down now.”
Caellia weighed her options, if she relented and released the dagger she would be giving in to him. She knew that despite her brave words, she most likely couldn’t stop him without help, which would not be forthcoming. Forgetting Goryn was not something she could, or would, do however. He had died to protect her! How could she simply forget him?!
Distracted, she saw too late Nathavin’s sudden rush at her. Before she could bring the dagger up to defend herself, she was pinned to the tree behind her. Caellia dropped the dagger to bring her hands up to the push at the spiked bow holding her against the tree. She was confused when Nathavin easily let go of the bow to pick up the fallen dagger and moved calmly a few paces away from her, yet the bow stayed at her throat, continuing to pin her to the tree.
“The spines of my bow have been imbedded into the tree as deep as your throat will allow Caellia. You cannot and will not move from there until I remove the bow.” He watched dispassionately as she futilely clawed at the bow, trying ineffectually to remove it. “You will stay there until you can acknowledge that your place is with me. Pinned as you are, you cannot look away from me. It is up to you when I will release you.”
“You aren’t giving me a choice Nathavin!” Caellia screamed. She clawed desperately at the bow, trying to dislodge it to no avail. Caellia gave a frustrated howl as she fought her tears once again. “You can’t do this to me! You can’t!”
“I have…” Her screaming interrupted him, “Continue to scream like that and I will find a way to quiet you down.” He watched in perverse satisfaction as she instantly fell silent. Likely she still remembered how he’d silenced her the last time she’d gotten too loud. “As I was saying, I have given you a choice Caellia. Whether or not you like the options doesn’t truly matter. A choice is still a choice. You can choose to not acknowledge me and remain stuck to that tree indefinitely, or you can choose to acknowledge me and be removed from that tree. Those are the choices I have given you.”
Caellia closed her eyes and fell limp against the tree, using only her legs to leverage her weight on to lessen the pressure at her throat. He’d caught her yet again. What had she done to displease Eva so much to deserve this?
She did not know how long she stayed like that. When she next opened her eyes, the sunlight was fading, quickly. It would be dark soon. She risked a peek in Nathavin’s direction. He was still there, resting against a tree across from her and silently observing her. Tears began to build in her eyes as she slumped down and allowed them to fall freely down her face. A warm wind stirred her hair and caused her to relax briefly. Her tears gradually dried as the wind continued to soothe her gently.
She glanced again at Nathavin as he stood up and approached her and shivered involuntarily. Again, the warm wind surrounded her. Caellia knew what she had to do and steeled her frayed nerves before raising her eyes to his and softly whispering, “My place is beside you, I understand and,” she nearly didn’t finish the sentence, but the wind continued to blow around her and she continued, “I understand that as my Lord, you will accept nothing less.”
Suddenly, the wind that was blowing so calmly before, flared violently around the two elves. Faster and faster it blew, whipping around the two. A strange hum filled the air as magic built within the whirling vortex of air. Caellia stared at Nathavin for some clue that he might know what was happening. It soon became apparent that he did not, but he did not seem concerned with the situation. As they stood within the rapidly spinning air mass, a strange light appeared between the two of them. It was faintly pulsing, and was colored a light hued green. The winds, while retaining their speed, took on a calming effect once more. The light drifted toward Nathavin and paused, then gave a slight dip and then approached Caellia.
The light brushed against Caellia’s face, sending a calming warmth through her before it floated to the tattoo on her forehead and lingered there before a ghostly voice was heard. “My daughter, you have accepted your fate willingly and of your own free will. None shall harm you. Your words these past few minutes have irrevocably bound you to Nathavin. The chains of fate cannot be severed. I have been, and will be, watching over you my child.” The light flashed brilliantly then faded, the winds died and all was silent.
Caellia was stunned. The glowing orb had been her father’s spirit? She limply fell into Nathavin’s chest as he pulled the bow away from her. What had he meant by ‘chains of fate’? Caellia began to shake violently and did not notice that Nathavin’s arms had firmly, yet gently, tightened around her. It was a long time before she realized that he was not restraining her, but was attempting to calm her down.
Nathavin looked down upon the small elf as his hand brushed through the tendrils of hair running down her back. The pull of the dark blood had been thoroughly broken with the appearance of the spirit orb. He had succeeded in his goal. He had run Caellia to the ground and gotten his promise. Nathavin understood that the wind had been caused by the spirit orb and that had calmed Caellia enough to make the promise. However, he instinctively knew that even had the winds not calmed her, she would’ve still made her vow.
Caellia slowly began to calm down and became aware of the fact that she was leaning heavily on Nathavin and that his arms were wrapped around her. She stayed that way a moment longer then tried to pull away, only to find he would not let her. After unsuccessfully attempting to pull away she looked curiously up at him. Her eyes met his and locked for long seconds before she could no longer hold his gaze.
“Rune is close. We should make it within a few hours.” He spoke softly, determined not to cause her undue stress. “We will head back to the road and meet up with Kattath and the others.”
Caellia could only nod tiredly as she felt him guide her in the correct direction. She felt numb, partially because of her ordeal with Nathavin himself, and partly because of the spirit orb.
She stumbled on a tree root and latched onto Nathavin for support as she righted herself. Her fingers dug into his white, mithril lined armor as a red hot pain lanced its way up her right leg. Crying out, she tumbled to the ground as the excruciating pain took its toll.
Nathavin barely had time to slow her fall before she hit the ground. He took a look at her pain filled face before gingerly lifting her right ankle. Wincing inwardly at her hiss as he unlaced the slender green and silver boot, he felt the muscles already beginning to tighten in her ankle. Carefully, he removed the boot itself and laid his bare hand on the ankle and felt the intense heat already present in the joint and surrounding muscle. She had sprained it badly.
While a considerable fall, the trip over the tree root shouldn’t have inflicted that serious an injury. She’d likely injured it sometime during their fight and hadn’t noticed. The muscles couldn’t handle the added stress of the trip and that had resulted in the more serious sprain. As he continued his exam he noticed that it was already beginning to swell and he would not be able to slide her boot back on her foot. He took another look at the boot and made his decision. Tossing the boot to the ground, he shifted his position and removed her other boot and tossed it as well. “Caellia, your ankle is severely sprained. You must not walk on it.”
“I’ll be alright.” Caellia grimaced at the pain as she attempted to move.
“No, you won’t. I will carry you the rest of the way.”
Caellia looked at him incredulously. Oh no, she wasn’t going to be carried anywhere by him. “I’ll be fine Nathavin. Just let me lean against you and I’ll be alright. Please return my boots to me.”
An irritated sigh escaped him, “You were leaning on me when you tripped. You should not walk anymore tonight, or tomorrow.”
“Nathavin I will be alright.” Caellia started to say more but was cut off by Nathavin’s sharp voice.
“Caellia, you accepted that you needed my protection!” His voice changed suddenly to a deceptively soft tone, belying the anger hidden just beneath the surface. “Or was that a lie?” She was not allowing him to protect her! His vow did not extend to just mortal enemies!
Caellia hung her head, “No, it was not a lie.” She looked at the ground in shame before she looked to him again. “I will not go back on my word again.” He seemed to instantly calm and she continued brokenly, “I’m sorry for,” she hiccupped, “not being able,” another hiccup, “to…”
“Enough.” Nathavin pulled her closer and gently held her. “You’ve been through enough. Allow me to help you.” He pulled away a few inches to look at her. “Caellia, I will ask you something. When you were being held by that human, why did you fall to the ground, hmm? There was no reason for you to do so. You could’ve went along with her and gotten to Rune. There was no reason to think I wouldn’t shoot you and not her, I’d overheard your conversation with the Captain of the orc squad present. But you chose to fall anyway. Why?”
Caellia looked at him in confusion and shook her head. “I don’t understand, I just…”
He interrupted her, “I believe that on a deep level you trusted me Caellia.” His hand found its way to her delicate jaw and ran lightly down to her collarbone. “Trust me again Caellia. I understand it’s asking a lot right now, but trust me.”
“But what about the vows I made earlier?” Caellia was completely confused. First he’d been absolutely abominable to her and now his mood had rapidly shifted once again.
“The vows you made still stand Caellia, I will not allow you to go back on those.” His tone brooked no argument. “However, I will trust you to remember those vows on your own. I will have to trust you, as you will have to trust me. Your guards will be dismissed, except for Kattath.”
Softly, Caellia whispered, “Thank you.”
“Put your hands around my neck and hold on tight.” He waited as Caellia did as he asked her then scooped her up and cradled her against his chest. He waited patiently as she shifted to a comfortable position before setting off in the direction of the road.
He silently walked toward their destination with sure footed precision that only dark elves were capable of at night. Ever so often he would take a small look at her. While Nathavin could only guess at the thoughts racing through her mind, he thought he had a pretty good idea on what those thoughts were. The girl really could not hide her emotions well at all.
Caellia noticed him taking furtive looks at her and hid her face with her hair. She couldn’t relax, his nearness to her was overwhelming. His very scent, an enticingly woodsy and spicy smell, was sending her nerves into a flurry. What was happening to her? Why did she feel this way? She unconsciously buried her face into his chest, only to recoil as his spicy scent flooded her nose.
Nathavin felt her recoil away from his chest and a wicked grin crossed his features. Stopping briefly he readjusted her in his arms so that she was pressed closer to his chest. She was almost completely facing him now as she lay in his arms and her ear was pressed snugly against his heart.
Caellia stiffened as she was forced to breathe in his scent. She was also pressed closely to his chest. She began to struggle weakly when she realized he didn’t plan on moving her soon. Whatever was going on was weakening her. She could feel it. Her mind was becoming cloudy and she was incredibly weak.
Nathavin couldn’t resist and a low laugh escaped him. “Relax Caellia. I’m not doing anything to you. You are simply tired and falling asleep.” His grip tightened marginally so he wouldn’t drop her and pressed her ear closer to his heart. “Listen to it, allow yourself to fall asleep.”
Caellia fought for a few more minutes before falling still, breathing hard from her struggles. She began to relax as he continued to walk tirelessly through the trees. Her sensitive hearing picked up the steady beating of his heart unwillingly. Its steady rhythm lulled her to relax further. Her delicate nose was forced to inhale his unique scent. As her mind fought against all the sensory input, it was slowly overridden as her body relaxed. Within minutes, Caellia was asleep.
