Starr stumbled in her haste to keep up with Shin. She’d already asked him to slow down twice, and she was determined not to ask a third time. Gritting her teeth, she pushed through the pain and quickly drew abreast of him. Gazing at him from the corner of her eye, she could scarcely believe she was walking with him. He looked nothing like himself.
Then again, she’d also caught a glimpse of herself in a mirror and had nearly given them away with a shocked screech. Her hair had turned a deep ebony, her complexion had become dusky gray, and her eyes were now a slate gray color. Although she was dressed in little more than scraps, the strange magic presented the illusion of her wearing mage robes.
And the garments could hardly be called ‘robes’. The main body of the robe was simple netting, like one would see dockside. There were some silky triangle shaped bits that covered her chest and nether region. The heeled sandals stretched upwards with sheer leggings that were deep red, and the back of the robe had a long, feathery looking flap that accentuated her ass.
“Someone’s coming.” Shin muttered, breaking into her thoughts. “Remember, you need to act as if you belong here. You need to be confide…”
“Arrogant.” Starr interrupted, correcting him. “Dark elves have an inherent arrogance that is constantly on display.” She turned to face him, squaring her shoulders, head held high, her face schooled into what she hoped was a disdainful sneer. “Do not presume to instruct me on how to be a dark elven woman.” Her tone was clipped and icy.
His eyebrow rose. She’d sounded exactly like Aleyel just then.
“Also, shorten your stride.” She muttered tersely.
“If I shorten it much more I might as well stand still.” He replied, but he took her point and obligingly did as she’d asked. He was grateful she was alive and wasn’t up to arguing with her.
Their conversation fell silent as two dark elves, a male and female, approached them. The two saluted Shin, nodded respectfully at Starr, and continued on their way. Eyebrow furrowing in confusion, Starr inquired. “Why are they saluting you?”
“No idea.” Shin shrugged. “So long as they remain oblivious, I don’t care.”
For nearly half an hour, they saw no one else. When they did, Shin quietly swore.
Ciat.
They’d slept together a few times, but it had never been more than that for him. Ciat on the other hand could never accept that and was constantly trying to convince him to feel more. Hopefully she wouldn’t see through the spell. He didn’t want to deal with her nonsense. Honestly he actually regretted involving himself with her.
Starr also recognized the dark elven woman and hatred bubbled up in her chest. But mixed with it was an emotion she hadn’t expected. Jealousy. The elf had mentioned wanting to find Shin and that had left a bad taste in Starr’s mouth.
“Sovrath. Have you seen the light elven prisoner? She escaped custody after she was taken to the healer’s ward.” Ciat questioned.
Shin answered quickly and without pausing to consider who ‘Sovrath’ was. “No.” He moved to go around Ciat but ground his teeth when she blocked his path.
“Have you by chance heard anything of Shin?”
Shin shook his head no again and was about to answer when Starr interjected, surprising him with her ability to both understand and speak the dark elven language.
“Go find your wayward elves on your own.” She bit out coldly. “Or can you not even do that job properly?”
Turning her gaze to Starr, Ciat’s eyes narrowed in anger. “Watch how you speak to me…” She warned, unsure as to who the other female was. She’d never seen her before and to her knowledge had done nothing to provoke this anger.
“Or what?” Replied Starr. “You couldn’t keep one lowly light elf in line and yet you have the audacity to think you can threaten me?” She stepped closer. “Go ahead, make a fool of yourself yet again. Torvynaar already considers you to be useless…” Starr truly had no idea what he thought of Ciat, nor did she care. But she’d overheard the two of them arguing outside her cell and she’d understood from his vocal inflections that he’d been unhappy with Ciat and she’d never returned to question her again. That had been both a blessing and a curse…
Before Ciat could respond, Starr stepped closer to Shin and placed a hand possessively on his shoulders. “Come on, let’s go find us a quiet corner…” She leaned up and pressed her lips against his in a deep kiss. Pulling away slowly, she glared at Ciat. “You’re still here?” She knew good and well the dark woman had gone nowhere. “While I know many do not mind an audience, I’ve never much cared for another woman to watch…”
Lips curling in a silent growl, Ciat left the two apparent lovers alone. As her footsteps faded, Shin gazed down at Starr, getting the distinct impression that she knew about his and Ciat’s past. She’d never been this brazen and bold before, yet here she was, and it just so happened to be in front of his former lover?
“Good enough of an impression?” Starr asked, her tone deceptively airy and light. But not quite light enough to fool Shin. Her emotions had been in full command of that scene.
Unacceptable.
Glancing around, he muttered out lowly. “It appears that the concealment spell has granted you more benefits than merely appearing dark elvish. You can speak like one too.” This was an unintended side effect he was sure, but one that he was somewhat grateful for. However, not if she was going to continue to speak without thinking of the possible consequences.
Pulling her into an alcove, he held his index finger up to forestall any questions. “First, never, let your emotions guide you through those situations. That interaction was personal for you. It wasn’t for her. You must remain detached. The transition from anger to seduction did not flow naturally. Second, always read your partner, I was unprepared for you to take that route dealing with her.”
“Third, what would you have said if she’d questioned you about exactly how you knew Torvynaar’s opinion of her?” Something he was honestly curious about himself. “Fourth, and finally, don’t underestimate your opponent. She isn’t as quick witted as some, others would’ve plunged a dagger in your back as soon as you turned your attention to me.” He knew that his words were coming across harshly, more harshly than he meant them to be, but her actions had worried him. If she tried that again there was no guarantee the outcome wouldn’t be deadly for her.
Starr observed him for a moment, choosing to ignore his lecture for the time being. “You’ve done that, haven’t you? Stabbed someone when their attention was elsewhere.” She should’ve been furious at him for the way he’d spoken to her just now, in the past she would’ve been livid. Now… she couldn’t summon the energy to be angry.
He’d been prepared for her to be outraged at him over his speech just now, but he was pleasantly surprised when she wasn’t. “Yes, I have.” He admitted without a shred of guilt. “You are not yet healed enough for such a confrontation, so do not instigate one. Nor do we know exactly what will happen to the concealment spells if we do start fighting. The enchantment may break, revealing our true identities. It has already gifted you the ability to understand and speak our language. That was definitely not an intended affect.” He pulled her close and hugged tightly, mindful of her injuries. After a few precious seconds, he pulled away. “Come on, we don’t have much further.”
They’d further discuss the incident and Ciat later. While any affinity he’d had for Ciat was long gone, he didn’t want to kill her either. But had Ciat managed to see through the spell, they would’ve had to kill her regardless, something Starr clearly wouldn’t have opposed. “If anything must be done about her, I will do it. Understand?” Shin uttered, his voice somewhat terse.
Starr hesitated a moment before acknowledging her acceptance. She didn’t like the agreement, but also knew better than to argue about it. What exactly was her relationship with Shin? They’d never discussed it. And she’d never really thought on it much to begin with since they’d been effectively forced by circumstances to be around one another at all.

Torvynaar paced quietly through the passageways. Those who saw him and knew him well enough, knew to stay far away from him. Though his outward demeanor was calm, his eyes told of the raging anger he kept otherwise hidden away. He didn’t know how, but he was certain Shin had managed to sneak back and was affecting a rescue of his dear light elf. His voice calm as ever, he ordered the guards to double up on the entrances to the caverns.
Pausing in thought, he contemplated Shin’s possible exit points. No doubt he’d want to go the quickest way. That meant the eastern gates since they were closest. But Shin liked to strike when the guards were sleepy, prone to dozing. That meant the southern gates. He also preferred to take paths that were not often traveled, less people equaled less chance of being seen. That eliminated both the northern and eastern gates as they each had only one pathway to them. The western gates were never even an option because they only led to the western shores where the sea began.
He made his way to the southern gates and then continued into the dark forest outside. It took him a while, but he finally found a good spot to lay in wait and shadowed himself, hiding away. He had every confidence that Shin would make his way out of the caverns, no matter how many guards were in place. All he had to do now was wait.
