Thirty-One
Varian Wrynn pressed his fingers to his temples in an attempt to alleviate the headache forming behind his eyes. It wasn't a very subtle move - Genn picked up on it right away - but Varian couldn't exactly just scream at everyone in the room to shut up. Many of them would kick his ass; others would probably react poorly to his display of irritation. Mostly Jaina, who had become increasingly vocal about ending the Horde in a permanent fashion. The only ones who were - seemingly - on his side still, or at least would listen to reason, were Moira Thaurissan of the Dark Iron, one of three on the Council of Three Hammers ruling Ironforge, Velen, leader of the Draenei and Anduin's teacher, Genn Greymane, King of Gilneas, and sometimes Tyrande. Sometimes Tyrande because she was still adamant that she be present for Garrosh's trial, and that everyone got a fair say in his fate. Meaning, neither Varian nor Go’el could haul off and take the bastard's head. But the trial was going to have to wait, Varian decided. Not by any choice of his, of course, but because they were missing a vital part of the trial's group of witnesses and testifiers. Namely, Anduin and Go’el. Both had suddenly dropped off the face of Azeroth, and not a peep had been heard from either for weeks. Varian, for his part, thought he'd reacted to the knowledge that his son was missing quite well. If quite well meant that he hadn't torn up the whole of Stormwind looking for Anduin, or the whole of Elwynn when he couldn't find his son in the city.
And Wrathion is gone, too, as is Shandris. And they all vanished without telling anyone where they were going and why. Varian rubbed his temple, pressing inward after a moment, then resuming rubbing. We can only hope they're all together and that Shandris is keeping both boys out of trouble.
"Trouble", though, seemed to be following around the elder Wrynn more so than the younger. Varian leaned toward Genn and shifted his hand to cover his mouth a bit, not exactly making it seem like he was trying to be sneaky, but being sneaky was exactly what he was doing. It was only easy to do it because Jaina's back was to him, since she was arguing with Moira about something and growing increasingly more adamant, though she was keeping her volume down.
"So," Varian asked the elder king, "how long do you think we'd live if we told Jaina to shut up?"
Genn snorted. "I'd say all of the two seconds it takes you to get the last syllable out."
"Two seconds? That's it?"
"I was being optimistic."
Varian leaned back in his chair and looked toward the only person who seemed to be able to somewhat control Lady Proudmoore. Of course, calling him a 'person' would be like calling a gnome tall. Kalec, former Aspect of the Blue Dragonflight, sat nearby Jaina and Moira, looking like he wanted to interfere but was afraid to even try. Varian wondered if it was because he wasn't sure how to deal with two arguing mortal women - especially when he was staying with one of them in Dalaran and didn't want to be kicked out onto his ass - or because he genuinely didn't know how to deal with the situation before him.
Varian let out a long sigh. "Ladies." He said, a growl in his voice that said he wouldn't allow them to disobey.
Moira was the first to look at him. After tucking a lock of hair behind her ear, Jaina turned to face Varian. Then she said, "What?"
Varian glowered at her, and he saw a spark of wariness creep into her eyes. "I think it's time we discuss why we're all gathered here, rather than arguing about the past or the future."
"So, do you know why Anduin and Wrathion suddenly took off? And why Shandris is gone too? Or how about how Go’el has suddenly gone missing?"
"No," Varian replied, "I don't know why. But I know there has to be a reason for it."
"Of course there is." Jaina said, almost snappishly. "Wrathion's betrayed us, and he's done something with both Anduin and Shandris. As for Go’el, after you stopped him from killing Garrosh, he probably went sulking somewhere-"
"Ach, shut yet trap, sorceress." Moira said, interrupting Jaina and receiving a glower in return. "Don't go and be puttin' yer biases on the rest o' us. I have me doubts about the Wrathion boy too, but he's proved himself a staunch ally both to the Alliance and the Horde by helpin' our warriors out where he can. And don' ye forget, he's the one who helped protect Anduin while the lad was recovering. I doubt betrayal is the last thing on Wrathion's mind."
"He collapsed."
Varian's attention snapped to Kalec. The half-elf was staring at the table, just staring as if the grain in the wood was going to suddenly come alive and eat him. Varian made a noise low in his throat, not quite a growl, but not quite a noise that would allow Kalec to stay silent for long without something bad happening to him.
Kalec looked up at Varian with a glower that didn't belong in a half-elf face and clearly displayed the fact he wasn't what he appeared to be. "When the earthquake hit, Anduin sent for me right after because Wrathion had collapsed for no reason. I came and checked him out and found nothing wrong. It wasn't too long after that the two of them, and Shandris, disappeared."
Genn frowned deeply. "And it was about that time SI:7 learned that Go’el and Aggra had gone missing."
Varian tapped his index finger against the armrest of his chair. Too many things didn't add up. "And what of Go’el’s boy?"
Now it was Malfurion who answered. "By all accounts, he's staying with Vol'jin on the Echo Isles. There has to be a reason for that. Why would Go’el and Aggra leave their son with Vol'jin, and suddenly disappear?"
"Same reason I leave me boy with people I trust," Moira stated. "To protect him. If I know there be danger comin', or a dagger directed at me back."
"You think that's why Go’el left his son with Vol'jin?" Genn asked. "Because someone's trying to kill him?"
"It isn't like it hasn't been tried before."
The room went silent for a long, uncomfortable moment. Then Jaina sighed. "We just finished the Siege of Orgrimmar. What idiot would start another confrontation so soon?"
"I could think of a few people." Varian said, eyes on Jaina. She glowered at him.
"The point is," said Tyrande, "Anduin, Wrathion, Shandris, Go’el, and Aggra are missing. Shandris wouldn't leave without telling me or Mal unless she thought it was important enough to attend to immediately. Since nothing is happening in Darnassus, nor has Taran Zhu called for our presence, I can only assume she's accompanied Anduin and Wrathion to wherever they went."
"Which we don't know." Said Kalec.
Varian scowled at the toes of his boots. "There is one place we haven't thought to look."
Even Genn looked at him sharply. "And where's that?" Asked the Gilnean king.
"Outland."
Everyone stared at Varian in silence for a long whole. Then Malfurion asked, "What reason would they have to go to Outland? I understand wandering around Azeroth, where the dangers are known, but Outland is a different kind of dangerous."
Jaina tapped the side of her jaw for a long while. "Unless they know something we don't."
"Like what?" Kalec asked.
"Well, that's what we have to find out, isn't it?"
"Easier said than done."
Jaina looked toward Varian. "You could get SI:7 to investigate. You also have an... understanding... with Vol'jin. Maybe you could ask him if he knows anything."
You're going to choke on that bone, aren't you, Jaina? Varian thought, his hands curling into fists. He knew she wasn't pleased with the turn of events, but she'd hold her tongue. Unless she was pushed, anyway. "I suggest we all put our efforts into finding out what's going on. I don't want another war breaking out so soon, but if prefer to know my enemy before I presume it's the Horde."
As those gathered around the table began to move, either to return to their quarters or cities or whatever, Genn leaned close to Varian. "Do you think something's going to happen?"
Varian lifted his shoulders in an imperceptive shrug. "The question isn't whether I think something's going to happen. The question is whether Anduin thinks something's going to happen."
Genn looked at him in askance.
Varian turned his attention to the people leaving the room. "His actions in Pandaria taught me much, more than I probably felt like learning, especially about my son. I learned that Anduin will act without so much as a thought or a plan if it's the right thing to do. So..."
"So?"
"So who's the one in danger? Who is it that's made Anduin move so suddenly, and choose not to tell me, or any of us?"
Since Varian didn't wait for an answer before striding from the room, Genn guessed he didn't want one. But the questions posed by the King of Stormwind made Genn think and wonder, and because he wondered, he moved to contact his own spies and messengers, and hoped he'd be able to uncover something before it became too late.
