Starr and Shin strode toward the guards tensely. Shin immediately noticed the increased number of them and knew something was wrong. Judging by her slightly more shallowed breathing, Starr had as well. They were too close to anyone to risk speaking, so he simply placed his hand at the small of her back and began a gentle, barely perceptible massage in an effort to calm her.
Forcing herself to relax, she took a steadying breath and released it slowly from between her teeth, willing her muscles to loosen up. Tilting her head a bit higher, she focused on the trees that she could see just beyond the guards. As they drew nearer, the guards saluted and Shin saluted them back. Having no idea if she was to salute them as well, she opted not to. The couple they’d passed in the halls hadn’t batted an eye when she’d failed to salute them when Shin had. However, they were forced to halt their progress through the gates when one of the guards blocked them.
The lips of the nearest guard curled malevolently. “Still as coldly arrogant as always I see, you won’t even acknowledge me anymore. Tell me, what did I do to you Harima?” He moved to stand directly in front of her. “Why did you choose to leave not only my command, but my bed as well?”
Starr froze, unsure how to reply. Noticing this, Shin swiftly intervened, but no sooner had he spoken, he was angrily cut off by the guard. “This is between Harima and myself!” The guard spat, resting his hand on his dagger in clear warning. Shin grit his teeth, he couldn’t risk a fight.
“That is the reason I left your command.” Starr stated coldly, praying to whatever deity would listen to her that she wouldn’t blow this. “Your temper.” She held the guard’s gaze evenly.
“I can accept that.” The guard replied. “But that was no reason to leave my bed. I never treated you harshly.” He took a couple of steps forward, closing the distance between them. “Come back to my bed…” He raised his hand, meaning to run his fingers through her hair.
Her face twisting in very real disgust, Starr dodged the outstretched hand and batted it away from her. “Don’t you dare attempt to touch me again!” She felt the stirring of her magic and clenched her teeth tightly. If she lost control of it now they would be revealed. “It’s over. I’ve moved on. So should you.” She stepped around the guard swiftly and called to Shin over her shoulder using the name Ciat had used. “Sovrath? You coming with me?”
“Thiefiell ordered that no one leave the caverns.” Another guard piped up, adjusting her grip on her arcana mace, bored with the display.
Turning her attention to the female guard that had spoken, Starr scoffed. “We’ll take that under advisement. He can come find us if he wants.”
Frowning at Starr’s flippant response, Shin eased his way forward and around the male that had stopped them. “We won’t be long. We’re on a mission for Torvynaar.” As he’d hoped, all of the guard’s paled in dread at the mention of Torvynaar and swiftly moved out of their way, allowing them to pass unimpeded.
It seemed that Torvynaar still had not managed to discern the difference between fear and respect. Had the guards respected Torvynaar, they would’ve further questioned the alleged mission, possibly discovering them in the process. However, they feared him, and wanting to avoid a possible confrontation, allowed himself and Starr to pass unchallenged.
Once they’d gotten far enough away, he breathed a sigh of relief. He’d also sensed her magic beginning to gather, but thankfully she’d managed to tamp it back down. It hadn’t appeared that the other’s had sensed it either. A fact he was grateful for.
“The fenrir’s are just past what used to be the Neutral Zone.” Shin informed Starr. “We’ll take them and travel through Gludio territory using the roads for as long as the concealment spells allow. After they’ve dissipated, we will travel through the forests.”
Starr nodded quietly and the two traveled in silence for a while, both unnerved by the unnatural silence of the forest. Shin’s jaw clenched with apprehension, eyes scanning the forest. His gaze flickered to Starr. “If I tell you to run, you run. Don’t wait for me.”
Pausing midstride, Starr observed him with a silent regard for a moment. She didn’t want to. Her injuries be damned, she didn’t want to leave him behind. “I’ll need a weapon of my own if there’s a chance we’re going to split up.” She mentioned pragmatically.
Nodding in agreement, Shin handed her a spare dagger that he kept for emergencies. “It’s small, but the enchantments on it are worth a kings ransom.”
Taking the weapon, Starr pulled the blade from it’s protective sheath and tilted it so that the moonlight glinted on it, illuminating the inscription. “I thought all of these had been lost… Destroyed…” The inscription Elaug Aghar, or ‘might mortal’ as it was known in the common tongue, was barely legible. The powerful magic helped guide the wielder’s strike toward vital organs with incredible accuracy, vastly increasing the odds of a lethal strike considerably. “How did you get this?” He was right, the weapon was absolutely worth a kings ransom, probably two kings.
“Never mind that.” Shin muttered tensely. “If we are forced to split up again, you head straight for Nathavin’s fortress. Use any means necessary to get there.” When she nodded, he breathed out a sigh of relief and began walking again.
Falling into step beside him, Starr tied the leather lacings at her hip, placing the dagger in easy reach if she needed to pull it. They walked several more miles in an uneasy silence.
Meanwhile, Torvynaar waited patiently, his eyes closed and leaning against a tree relaxed. His ears twitched as he heard footsteps approaching. Two sets, one lighter than the other. Opening his eyes, he waited as the figures came into view.
Two dark elves, unfamiliar to him, walked down the path in his direction. Their steps were hurried and the female kept taking furtive glances at their surroundings. He knew well why. They were breaking orders by being outside the caverns. Settling back, he began to resume his wait. The two would eventually be caught by the patrols and sent back. There was no need to involve himself in such a lowly task.
However, as they drew steadily closer to him, he noticed that something seemed off about them. Standing a bit straighter, his focus intensified. The longer he stared at them, the more ‘wrong’ they appeared. They passed within feet of him and he felt the telltale tingle of magic flow across him. The woman wore mage robes, but the magic flowing from her seemed wrong somehow.
Eyes narrowing, he stepped onto the path behind them and began to follow. As he studied them, the more he could see the faint ripples of magic that surrounded them, creating a strange mirage around the pair. Eyes narrowing to dangerous slits, he realized that what he was seeing was not the natural appearance of the two in front of him.
Right ear trembling slightly, Starr turned her gaze to her surroundings. Had that been a footstep behind them? As they walked further, she focused her hearing on the sounds from behind them. But, try as she might, she didn’t hear anything else. She’d practically convinced herself that she’d heard nothing and that she was just nervous when Shin roughly shoved her forward while simultaneously spinning to face the direction they’d come from.
Landing harshly in the dirt some feet away, she heard the distinct ring of swords meeting one another. She jumped swiftly to her feet and turned to face Shin’s direction. Her blood ran cold.
Torvynaar.
And in front of him stood Shin, blades drawn, his concealment spell clearly dispersed. Glancing down at herself, she noticed that hers had vanished as well.
“Well now, it appears that Nathavin’s found himself quite the spellmaster… That’s an impressive spell he created to hide your appearances. Too bad it wasn’t quite strong enough.” Torvynaar drawled slowly, keeping his sword evenly leveraged against Shin’s. His gaze flicked to the light elf for a moment before hissing and lunging to the side to avoid a second strike. Ignoring the bloody wound, he shifted his stance, cursing himself for his error. Shin had always been just that little bit more dangerous when defending light elves.
“Keep your eyes off her.” Shin rasped dangerously, spinning his right sword in anger. “Tonight, we settle this, once and for all.” As Torvynaar stepped to the side, Shin matched him, making sure he kept himself between his opponent and Starr.
So intently focused on the two elves in front of her, Starr stood without conscious thought. Listening to them, she faintly growled in frustration. With the spell gone, she could no longer understand them.
The atmosphere grew thick with menacing energy. The dark, ominous magic gathering around each of them. As the dark magics formed murky and dark gray smokey shadows, those shadows were then pierced by streamers of deep, dark, blood red, swirling around them before forming ghostly swords above their heads that dissipated in a rings of concentric circles.
Starr abruptly found herself struggling to breathe in the suddenly stifling air. Her eyes began to sting, and water profusely as she began coughing violently. She’d felt this before, but not to this degree. Particularly powerful dark elven magics and energies had a nasty tendency to literally asphyxiate those not strong enough to withstand it as it practically poisoned the very air they breathed. Covering her mouth and nose with her palm, she stared at the scene playing out in front of her with horrified dread.
Torvynaar scowled fiercely as he flicked his blade, soul energy coursing down it’s length. “To the death, then.”
