Starr’s breath caught in her throat as Shin’s blades pulsed with soul energy as well, the soul runes emblazoned on the blade burning brightly while the audible thrum of the magic served to underscore just how dangerously deadly the situation had become. Carefully she edged backward and away, giving Shin room to maneuver without worrying about her being too close to him. With stunning clarity she realized that both of them were not only more powerful than she’d ever considered, but truly evenly matched as well. She suddenly became sick to her stomach, feeling bile rising in her throat as fear for Shin’s safety rose swiftly and unexpectedly, her heart seizing painfully at the thought of him losing the fight.
Keeping his eyes trained on Torvynaar, Shin hissed out from between his clenched teeth. “Starr… Run!” Lunging forward, his swords crashed against Torvynaar’s in a fierce and fast flurry of strikes, the powerful soul energies sparking off the blades in a dazzling bright display of charged particles. His primary goal was to blind Torvynaar so that he didn’t see the direction she’d run in, but if any of the strikes managed to land, all the better.
Although he took a half step back, Torvynaar didn’t retreat. Bracing himself, he met and parried each of Shin’s blows with practiced detachment, waiting for an opportunity. Sidestepping, he twisted and brought a sword up skillfully, catching a small slice of Shin’s armor while he was fully extended in his attack. He was unsurprised when Shin vaulted away effortlessly. “I see Nathavin has kept you busy, you’ve improved since we last fought.” He never bothered to look to see where Starr had gone, he could track her easily enough after he’d killed Shin.
“You’ve gotten slower.” Shin retorted quickly, not caring if the barb was true or not. He needed to keep Torvynaar talking. Torvynaar didn’t have many tells, but talking was one of them, and it was the most obvious. The more he talked, the more confident he was. He was only ever silent when rattled, and losing. Talking also meant that he kept his attention off of Starr, who he sincerely hoped had run far and fast by now.
Sensing Shin’s slight distraction, Torvynaar pivoted and swung his leg out and around, kicking Shin squarely in the stomach and knocking him off balance while growling out. “Are you sure I’ve gotten slower? Because it doesn’t feel like it!” Completing the turn, he brought both swords to bear on his opponent.
Dropping to one knee, Shin reflexively brought his blades up and blocked Torvynaar’s swords. “Impressive…” He chuckled, slowly beginning to enjoy the fight despite the dire circumstances. They’d always been held back by Thiefiell, who’d never wanted to risk injuring either of them since he’d prized them so highly. “But it’s not enough!”
Using a trick that a light elven sword singer had taught him long ago, he pushed forward hard, gaining his feet and deflecting Torvynaar’s swords down and to one side. Spinning extremely rapidly on his heel, he twisted the grip on one of his swords into a reverse grip and delivered a backward blow on Torvynaar’s mid-back. The attack differed from any dark elven attack as it was boosted not with dark elven magics, but light elven magics, enhancing the speed and accuracy of the attack while not sacrificing any of the power.
Grunting from the force of Shin’s strike, Torvynaar spun quickly, however he angrily noticed that he was far slower than Shin had just been. Pulling his blades from the dirt, he then launched a devasting attack of his own. “It truly is a pity that you’ve been reduced to using their skills…” Eyes widening, he ducked low to avoid being decapitated by a lightning fast swing of Shin’s blade.
“You were saying?” Shin chuckled lowly with no small measure of contempt, the sound more of a somewhat amused snort than a laugh. He actually found that he relished the stunned look on Torvynaar’s face. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this…” As Torvynaar warily gained his feet, Shin circled him. “Thiefiell isn’t here to stop us this time…” Shin flicked the tip of one of his swords, feeling the swiftness of a light elven spell wash over him.
“No, he isn’t.” Agreed Torvynaar as he aggressively spun a blade, searching for an opening. He feinted a couple of thrusts which were all expertly blocked with exceptional speed.
Meanwhile, Starr observed the two dark elves from the relative safety of a nearby tree branch. She’d only gone a short distance before shadowing herself and doubling back. She’d then scaled one of the scraggly trees and was now sitting perched on it’s branches. Shin would no doubt be furious with her, but she wasn’t leaving him. She held no illusions that she could actually help him in this fight however and thus stayed hidden away as best she could.
A delicate eyebrow arched in surprise as light elven magic enveloped him. Who’d taught him that? How was he managing to wield both dark and light magic at the same time without it destroying him? As they continued speaking, she bit her tongue in frustration. She wanted to know what they were saying…
“What will you and Nathavin do with the few remaining light elves anyway?” Questioned Torvynaar, attempting to throw Shin off balance. “There can’t be enough of them left alive to sustain their kind.” His head canted to one side in mock thought. “I doubt there’s enough of them left alive to keep even a small population of half-breeds going.”
Shin grinned widely and tutted. “You’ll have to do better than that to get a rise out of me.”
“I see…” Torvynaar muttered, brows furrowing in anger.
For a moment, the two stood still, assessing one another in the silence of the forest.
Without warning, Torvynaar disappeared from sight, his spell of concealment shadowing him completely.
Or so he thought.
Swinging both blades out widely, Shin cast yet another light spell the sword singer had taught him. The spell froze the nearby ground, revealing Torvynaar while simultaneously slowing him down. Their blades clashed violently again and this time Shin felt his swords biting into the plate armor and beginning to fracture it. Parrying a vicious retaliatory strike, he dodged nimbly to the side and appeared behind Torvynaar.
Yelling in anger, Torvynaar tried to spin to face Shin, but his movements were still hampered by the spell and he cried out in pain as his armor began to fail. Dropping his left sword to the ground, he grabbed Shin’s blade and held it firmly in place while thrusting his right blade back behind him blindly. His blade found a weakened spot in the armor and pierced through, sinking deeply into Shin’s flesh.
Grimacing in pain, Shin stepped back and away awkwardly, watching as Torvynaar’s blood stained sword retreated from his side. The sight of the ruby red blood running in rivulets down the blade had him instantly thinking of Starr, and how if he lost to Torvynaar her blood would mix with his on the steel. Time seemed to slow and he saw Torvynaar turning to face him, his remaining sword pulled back before driving forward towards his chest at what must’ve been a frighting speed.
His left sword rose seemingly on it’s own and the blades rang hollowly for a moment before Torvynaar’s blade was driven into the ground as Shin successfully redirected it. Shin’s right hand sword flew upward in a graceful arc, aiming directly at Torvynaar’s head. As suddenly as it’d seemingly slowed, time seemed to speed back up as he watched Torvynaar fall flat on his back in his effort to dodge the lethal strike.
Glaring up at his opponent, Torvynaar snarled hatefully. “How can you move that fast?!” How was it possible?!
“I can move as fast as I do because I didn’t look down on the light elves! I took the time to learn their skills and adapt them for myself!” Shin spat angrily. “These are easily learned by anyone not blinded by ignorant hate! When used together, they make us more powerful!”
As Shin got progressively angrier, he was unaware that his normally aqua colored eyes had begun to be rimmed in red, eventually turning crimson entirely. “We should’ve protected them! Had we allied with them instead of destroying them, we would’ve secured lasting peace for both our peoples! Now we must always be ready to defend ourselves against the humans or orcs, or both! And we have no one to ask for aid should we ever need it!”
Shin’s reddened eyes surprised Torvynaar into stillness. It appeared that Starr wasn’t the only one gifted with a rare ability. The only advantage he had now was that Shin didn’t seem to have noticed anything different. But he would have to act very, very fast to escape this situation.
Gathering dirt in his palm, Torvynaar flung it at Shin’s eyes while vaulting upright, snatching one of his swords in the process. He thought he’d moved fast enough… But he hadn’t, not quite.
Shin’s swords rained a furious succession of blows on his back. The already damaged armor finally gave way, falling to the ground and Torvynaar yelled in agony as he felt his back explode in searing pain. With his strength failing fast and unable to defend himself, he slapped his hand to his chest, activating a spell contained in a tattoo. The spell of escape enveloped him and with a sizzling, blinding light and an explosive pop of sound, he disappeared. He’d been instantly transported back into the safety of their caverns and the attentions of their most skilled healers who immediately began casting the necessary spells to save his life.
Shin snarled in aggravation. “Coward…” He ground out contemptuously into the silence. As the adrenaline from the fight wore off swiftly, he staggered unsteadily from the blood loss, using one of his swords to prop himself up.
A light thud coming from a tree behind him had him spinning rapidly, swords at the ready. “What are you doing here?!”
Ignoring his enraged question, Starr sprinted to him. She knew only one healing spell, one she’d only ever been able to cast on herself, but she had to try. He’d lost an alarming amount of blood already. Pressing her hands against the wound in his side, she willed her healing magic to come forth. An elven curse escaped her as the magic didn’t even so much as flicker. Again, she called to the healing energy, but it stubbornly resisted.
But the strange frost magic stirred. A lot.
As the runic tracings across her skin began to luminesce, Shin gripped her wrists firmly and pulled her hands away from him. “NO!”
Raising her eyes to his to argue, the words died on her lips at the sight of his crimson eyes.
Shin meanwhile had finally begun to notice that his sight seemed sharper. Clearer. Looking around, he realized he could see far greater details than he ever had. Shaking his head lightly and squeezing his eyes closed, he breathed heavily through the pain and confusion. “We need to leave here. Now. They will come looking for us.”
The two fled the forest as quickly as they could, eventually reaching the fenrirs. Shin tore through the saddle bags and downed five healing potions before the bleeding finally slowed and stopped. Whistling lowly, he called to his valravn, the bird that had initially helped him watch over Starr and prevent her from escaping. Landing on top of his fenrir’s head, the bird gazed solemnly at Shin for long moments before taking flight again.
Turning to Starr, Shin spoke, his voice tired. “The bird will bring Nathavin’s wyvern. We will head to a hideout nearby and wait. The fenrir’s can make their own way back to the fortress safely. And they can do it quicker without us slowing them down.”
Hours later, they were resting in the small hideout. The small lean-to was just barely big enough for the both of them, but it was well concealed and near a water source. Laying down on the ever so small sleeping pallet, Shin drifted to sleep immediately.
Starr on the other hand sat wide awake, keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. But she found her gaze straying to him often as the hours passed by quietly in the night. Alone with her thoughts, she thought over their shared experiences. Cradling her head in her hands, she realized that she’d begun to care for him. Tilting back, her head gently hit the wooden timbers supporting their shelter with a dull thump as her voice became filled with muted acceptance. “Futuo.”
Daylight came and went, and still Shin slept. She checked on him several times, only getting rumbled replies that she couldn’t understand, but as long as he answered she was happy. Dusk was beginning to fall when she heard a noise outside. A rhythmic whumping sound drew her outside. Looking up, she saw the large form of the wyvern as it landed a few yards from her.
Folding it’s massive wings, it turned it’s piercing gaze upon her. Caught in it’s gaze, she couldn’t look away. Without warning, images of herself and Shin on the dragons back and flying in the darkened sky filled her mind. The images of herself and Shin flying over the landscape, passing over enemy territory, and landing within the walls of Nathavin’s fortress filtered through her consciousness before abruptly cutting off. Her jaw fell open. The wyvern had communicated with her
The dragon’s eyes narrowed and it huffed loudly, smoke and embers curling from it’s nostrils in clear impatience.
Making haste, she rushed to awaken Shin. It was probably not a good idea to make the dragon wait…
