Sitting in front of the vanity while wearing her dress that was made for her with the help of the knight enchanter. Sirena watched as Maryanne put her in a half up half down hair style. The front part of her hair was twisted towards the back where they meet in the middle where there were small flowers as decoration while the rest of her blonde locks were in spiral curls. It reminded her of the days when she was in high school getting ready for homecoming. It brought back a lot of good memories for her. The woman who helped dressed her hair up did her make up as well in a natural look. Her lips were tinted a slightly darker pink than her natural soft pink.
The outlander knew the others had left the manor that they were staying at which was offered by the duke. As soon as she was ready, the young blonde woman had slipped on her silver heals then gave the woman who helped her a nod and a smile. Not knowing the protocol, the American didn’t know if she was allowed to tag along as a companion. Was that even a thing in Thedas? Did they do things differently from what her world did in history to protect a maiden’s virtue? Granted, she was no maiden, but no one knew that. It made her hesitant in what she was supposed to do.
“Have fun, Lady Sirena!” Her lady-in-waiting said when she sensed the girl’s befuddlement. At least she didn’t make a fool of herself. Sort of. Slowly, the outlander made her way out of her room and down the wooden hallway that had a blue runway. As she walked, she noticed multiple portraits of whom she assumed were the past and current family members. That was quite normal amongst the royal and noble families for they were the ones who were able to afford it since it was quite costly to have them painted and framed. Once she made it to the stairs, her eyes caught sight of someone who looked like they were waiting on someone.
“Well, my dear, don’t just stand there; we are already fashionably late!” Sirena’s eyes widened in astonishment from seeing a certain someone. Slowly, the American descended down the stairs. As she got closer to Vivienne, she noticed that the older woman was also wearing a dress, though, hers was mostly grey with some silver floral accents, the skirt clearly had a green silk underskirt with a grey tulle over it. Needless to say, but it was quite a lovely dress and it complimented the woman fairly well.
“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting anyone to accompany me.” The girl admitted sheepishly as she got the hint to make her way out of the duke’s manor. Not even able to see the look that that she was given by the one who had helped her; Vivienne followed the younger lady out.
“Of course, I’d come with you darling! Think of this like it’s your debut to the society.” In Sirena’s opinion, Vivienne sounded way too happy about the subject. Once she was outside with the knight enchanter, her steps carried her towards the horse drawn carriage she was to be riding in apparently with the older woman. In a way, the younger one felt relief that she wasn’t going alone. She would have felt awkward and would lack confidence.
After they had settled into the carriage, Vivienne tapped on the roof of their transportation to let the driver know they were good to go. Soon, the girl felt the thing move with a jolt. Her eyes glanced around to look at the interior. The walls were royal blue velvet with satin gold curtains covering the windows. Due to the duke being rich, the seats of course, were made of leather. As she tried to distract herself, she felt the carriage run into many bumps on the dirt road which caused the twenty-three-year-old to get jostled around. It definitely wasn’t like riding in a car which was much smoother, not to mention, it was also safer in a way even though people got into collisions all the time. There she was, experiencing the life nobles and royalty had when it came to traveling back in the historic times. Silently, she wrung her hands out of nervousness for she had no idea what to expect which was odd for she had played the game multiple times but it’d be different for she’d actually be there. With a hint of boredom, the American moved the curtain to the side to get a glimpse outside; not too far in the distance, her eyes caught sight of the place, or what she assumed to be the palace which she was heading towards.
“Is it safe to assume that this will be your first ball you’ve attended?” Sirena turned her attention to the one sitting in front of her. Was it a safe assumption? Shrugging her shoulders was the best way she knew how to answer until further explanation.
“I’ve been to a ball before, but not to the extent this one will be. I’m sure this one will exceed my expectations.” Was she going to get a lecture on how she should act? The only thing the blonde girl didn’t know what to do was greet royalty for she never had to do such before in her life. Of course, she read books but would what she read work in Thedas?
“Well, my dear, since this ball is hosted by a large figure, you should know how to greet her. Men usually do the bowing while ladies’ curtsy. Sadly, we don’t have time to practice yours; I’m sure you won’t fail the Inquisition. You’ve been impressive so far.” Little did the knight-enchanter know, there was a lot of pressure on the outlander’s shoulders and more was just added.
Finally, the horse drawn carriage had come to a halt and the door opened. Vivienne stepped out first giving the young lady some time to breathe. When a hand reached out to hers, she swallowed her nervousness down and placed her slightly shaking hand into the stranger’s. Sirena mustered her courage and stepped out herself. Her blue-green eyes looked around to see a beautifully done front lawn which was when she heard gasps from those who had taken a look at her. She dropped her gaze to look at the light shade of pink dress that was done in a mermaid style with a small train. The dress she wore was decorated with Austrian crystal in an intricate floral design all over the lower part of the skirt as well as the buttocks and back of the thigh areas. Her back was very much visible with a button look going up her spine while the plunging heart shape neckline and sleeves had what looked to be like intricately done leaves and flowers. There was some smaller bead work on the front of the gown as well. The accessories she wore went perfectly with what she was wearing; leaf looking diamond ear rings and a matching necklace that had a little drop in the middle.
Slowly, the young woman raised her head back up and rolled her shoulders back while straightening her spine. It was her time to shine. Looking over at the woman who came with her, she gave her a small nod telling her that she was ready. Immediately, Vivienne stepped beside the shorter woman and together, they made their way to the palace. Her hand held up her skirt to keep it from getting dirty on the ground as she followed a path. Sirena ascended the multiple stairs alongside her companion. Two uniformed people opened the door as soon as they approached which made it easier for them to walk on through the doorway.
Once they entered the palace, the young woman’s eyes widened in bewilderment. The floors looked to be made of marble with a red velvet runway that led up the stairs. The pillars looked glossy. Sirena had never been in a place that seemed that expensive as the one she had entered. From all around her, she heard people muttering behind their fans as she silently climbed up the stairs. Due to getting to the place later than the others, the bell rang not giving the two women time to socialize.
Everyone entered the ballroom but the two women. Wanting to keep the young woman’s appearance a secret for a little longer. Vivienne placed her hand on the other’s shoulder, silently telling her to wait. With a small nod, the blonde remained where she was standing when she heard the fashionable woman get announced. It made her wonder when she should make her entrance. After waiting for a few more seconds, she made her decision by grabbing the door and pulled it open. Her attention was caught by someone standing by the entrance of the room; it looked like he had said something but she didn’t catch what it was the page said for her mind was elsewhere.
“I’m sorry, what was it you said?”
“What iz your name mizz?” The man asked in a French accent that not only sounded annoyed but exhausted as well.
“Sirena Laurelet from the Inquisition.” She forced herself to speak with confidence while she felt everyone’s eyes on her. It was always uncomfortable for her when people stared at her due to her insecurities. Because of where she was at, it was one of those moments where the American had to fake it till, she made it. With her head held high, Sirena descended down the stairs to stand with the other Inquisition members as she heard her name get announced to everyone. As she made her way down the small stairs, her heart raced in her chest. The outsider’s gaze then moved over to look at her boyfriend and noticed immediately that his jaw had slightly dropped as he stared at her.
After she had smiled at the one who was courting her, she noticed a blonde woman with very short hair and was not only wearing a blue and gold dress, but also a golden mask. Sirena then dropped down into a curtsy to the whom she knew was the Empress Celene. Once the American was back to standing, she glanced at the other blonde who also had short hair, standing next to the Empress which she assumed was the duchess. Finally, Sirena continued her steps down till she was at the bottom before she went and stood next to the leader of the Inquisition and her advisors. Her blue-green eyes caught sight of the duke a little ahead of the group. Sadly, for her, she had to pay attention to everything that was being said.
“Grand Duke, we are always honored when your presence graces our court.” The woman did look rather pleased to see a family member. Was she really that naïve? Sirena continued to watch quietly.
“Don’t waste my time with pleasantries, Celene. We have business to conclude.”
“We will meet for the negotiations after we have seen to our other guests.” The man known as Duke Gaspard bowed in submission before speaking to the Inquisitor discreetly. “Lady Inquisition we welcome you to the Winter Palace. Allow us to present our cousin, the Grand Duchess of Lydes, without whom this gathering would never have been possible.”
“What an unexpected pleasure.” The pleasantries were really boring to the young American. It was unfortunate that she had to continue to pay attention. “I was not aware the Inquisition would be part of our festivities. We will certainly speak later, Inquisitor.” At least she was already able to catch something on the choice of words; they were unwelcomed by the duchess.
“Your arrival at court is like a cool wind on a summer’s day.” When were the niceties going to be over? At that point, Sirena was growing a bit impatient and waited. Her gaze went from one person to the next to gauge their reactions. It seemed everyone was quite good at the poker face for the most part. Only one had issues hiding how they were feeling which made her feel a little better for not being good at it herself.
“I am delighted to be here, Your Majesty.”
“We have heard much of your exploits, Inquisitor. They have made grand talkz for long eveningz. How do you find Halamshiral?” The outsider couldn’t help but roll her eyes. She knew what the Empress was doing. In her world it was called fishing for compliments; why people did that, she didn’t know. All she knew was that it was unneeded.
“I have no words to suffice. Halamshiral has many beauties and I couldn’t do them justice.”
“Your Majesty does you credit, and speaks well for the Inquisition. Feel free to enjoy the pleasures of the ball room, Inquisitor. We look forward to watching you dance.” Finally! They were free! Though, she found it odd that the Empress Celene did not acknowledge the others, but the American had no qualms against it. It was better than making an embarrassment of herself. That’d make the Inquisition look bad which was what she wanted to avoid.
With the freedom she had, Sirena left the dance floor with the others. Her eyes looked around for the refreshment tables and was not disappointed as she saw a tower of champaign and glasses of wine on one of the tables while the others were filled with delicious pastries on the few others. Now she knew where to go when she got hungry or wanted to get tipsy. For the time being, the young outlander made her way out of the ballroom and roamed around the halls. With much admiration for historical artifacts, she looked at all the paintings as well as the suit if armors that were lined up against some of the walls. As soon as she made it to another hallway where there was a lot of chatter, she made her way to where there were more portraits to look at.
Once she made it to the area where she was heading to, the young American woman saw a noble man and a woman who looked familiar to her. Her eyes squinted to see if she actually recognized the person or not. Why would there be someone she knew in Thedas? It wasn’t possible, right? But then her being there as well was also impossible, yet, there she was. As Sirena stared at the woman who looked like someone from her world, the nobleman had approached her with his hands behind his back.
“Quite the collection the Empress has.” He remarked, trying to start a conversation with her. She really hoped people wouldn’t try and chat with her.
“Indeed, she does. The collection is full of family history which makes it quite capturing to look at.” Feeling a bit awkward, she kept her head up to hide her disposition. Though, it seemed like her answer had satisfied the noble. Was it rare to find someone who appreciated art and history? Or maybe it was a test? If it was one then perhaps there was hope for her to not make an idiot of herself.
“It’s nice to see someone who shows such recognition for the collection.” That was clearly an approval. If only she was able to give herself a self-five. Sadly, her attention was caught again by the familiar person. It did seem like their conversation was over for there was nothing else to say.
“It’s a shame not a lot share the same level of admiration.” Sirena said to politely end the conversation. “If you will excuse me, My Lord, there is someone I have to greet.” The young lady dropped down into a curtsy before making her way to the mystery person. It looked like the friend-look-alike had dark brown hair that was also partially blonde in a spiral curl half-up and half-down style with the bangs also curled. Her light blue dress reminded her a bit of Cinderella due to the style with butterflies on the neckline and sleeves. With slow steps, the outsider approached the other girl wanting to solve the mystery on who the person was. “Excuse me; you look a lot like someone I know. Is your name Chiara by any chance?” Once the girl had turned around, her eyes widened in shock.
“Sirena? Is that really you?” To her ears, it sounded as if her friend was just as stunned as she was. How in the world was it possible for both of them to be in Thedas?
“Yeah, it’s me.” Her tone had a lot of disbelief as she looked at her friend. “How did you get here?” After a bit of hesitation, Chiara dragged Sirena over towards a corner so others could not over hear their conversation.
“I honestly don’t know how I got here. One minute I was in the state where I was living at and the next thing, I know is that I am roaming around the streets where everyone had French accents which told me I was in Orlais. Eventually I had left the safety of the city and somehow wondered too far to the point I was in the wild where I got attacked.” Her eyes widened from the tale she was hearing from her friend. “Luckily, I had found a couple of daggers that were in the ground from a soldier who had fallen near me. With the need to survive, I picked them up and fought back. I barely made it out alive but I ran back to the city which was where I have been staying. Now that you’ve heard my story, what about yours?” With her jaw dropped, the girl in pink barely heard the question brought back to her.
“Well, I may or may not have said a spell since I’m wiccan and I was tired of some bitchy kids. Obviously, it did not go as I planned for somehow I ended up in the Frostback Mountains. Unlucky for me, I faced Corypheus; you know that talking dark spawn.” Sirena noticed Chiara had nodded her head before continuing. “Well, yeah, instead of Evelyn buying the people more time, I took that spot in her stead.”
“You did not! Sirena, that can mess a lot of things up for the Inquisition members!” In a low whisper, Chiara had scolded her about the choices she made which resonated in her ears. “How did that go?” It was clear that her friend could not keep the curiosity away.
“Oh! Dude! It was scary as fuck! I believe I had a concussion along with some broken ribs while almost freezing to death; that wasn’t fun.” The outlander shuddered slightly from the memory of what she had been through.
“And you survived that and more! I really don’t know how you do it.” The twenty-three-year-old was then hugged by her friend. It was that moment when the bell tolled to let everyone know it was time to go back to the ballroom. The two Americans looked at each other with smiles on their faces.
They slowly made their way back to the place where people danced, taking their time. As soon as the second bell toll went off, their steps quickened. According to Vivienne, it was always better to be fashionably late. With that in her mind, Sirena made sure to be late by a few minutes so the nobles would pay more attention to her. The Inquisitor had a lot to do and she couldn’t get things done with eyes on her. While the two girls made their way to the ballroom, a plan was made.
Once the two friends had entered the room together, the Inquisition advisors looked over in their direction, some with raised brows and others with curiosity. Even Evelyn had the look of confusion on her face. Of course, it’d make sense for she had arrived to Thedas not knowing anyone and here she was, next to someone who was in Orlais. For all they knew, that was where her friend was from. Once Sirena approached the group with Chiara, she opened her mouth to speak as an introduction but was immediately interrupted by the Duchess before she was even able to begin, therefore shutting her mouth.
“Inquisitor Evelyn?” Without turning around, the American watched the Inquisitor look at the woman in an ivory-colored dress. “We met briefly. I am Grand Duchess Florianne de Chalons. Welcome to my party.”
“Why am I not surprised that you want to see me now?” It was the question that was going through the outlander’s head. The woman acted like she didn’t want them there earlier, yet, here she was trying to act all friendly to them. That was what made her guard go up.
“This is Orlais, Inquisitor. Nothing happens by accident. I believe tonight you and I are both concerned by the actions of… a certain person.” Listening to the conversation, Sirena tilted her head wondering what the arrogant woman was talking about. “Come, dance with me. Spies will not hear us on the dance floor.” Her eyes blinked a few times after hearing the invitation to Evelyn. Was that acceptable during the time period? She glanced over at her friend who looked back at her and shrugged her shoulders.
The Grand Duchess and Inquisitor Evelyn moved away from the group, but they knew what was going on. The Americans turned around to watch people stepping onto the dance floor. Sirena caught sight of the leader doing some dance she did not recognize. Due to not paying attention, she hadn’t realized that someone was bowing down to her with a hand held out for her which left her highly confused in what was going on. It was the first time of the night to make herself look like an idiot. Looking around amongst those around her, she noticed Vivienne shaking her head in disappointment. Stepping behind her, the mage leaned down to her ear.
“The duke has asked you to dance, I suggest you take the offer.”
“Uh… Of course.” Slowly, like she was hesitant, placed her small hand in his. He led her away from the safety of the group she was a part of, over towards the wooden dance floor. Was she really expected to dance? The outlander hoped the dance lessons she was given were enough. Soon enough, she felt herself following his steps. To keep her eyes off her feet, the young woman glanced over at the advisors and different companions; those who were raised around the courtly game looked proud while others that knew her looked with pity. Her eyes saw an empty spot which Chiara was standing before leaving it. Sirena then glanced over at Cullen whom was giving a different look all together; he was glaring. From a spin, she was able to see the Commander walk over toward a corner while grabbing a drink before drinking the wine while silently glaring. Was he glaring at her? Or the duke? Luckily, no one else noticed.
“I must have missed your name earlier, miss. May I hear it?”
“My name is Sirena Laurelet. And you are Duke Gaspard?”
“Indeed, I am, My Lady.” He swept her across the floor where there were few people to overhear their conversation. If anyone looked in their direction, they could look like a potential couple.
“What country do you hail from?”
“I come from Ostwick, why do you ask?”
“Hmm… That is quite interesting… How were you able to make it to the Inquisition?” What was up with all the questions? Did he know her secret? Her heart accelerated in her chest as she began to worry. Sure, he could be asking questions innocently, yet, to her, it felt like an interrogation.
“Why do you ask?”
“Am I not allowed to get to know a pretty woman when I see one?” A brow had risen up after hearing his question. Glad that she wasn’t stupid to fall for simple compliments, she wasn’t going to tell him the truth.
“I have traveled by ship first then switched to riding for you know, you can’t boat on land.” Her smart-ass comment was very much obvious. What surprised her was the fact the duke ended up laughing at the rudeness.
“Yes, I’m very much aware. Why did you join the cause that was once hated so much?”
“I heard what was going on between mages and templars, so, I wanted to help.” Did she say too much? Knowing how much in what she says can make someone think she was a spy or not from where she was claiming to be and that was what she was afraid of.
“I see… It was very nice dancing with you, Lady Sirena. I hope to dance with you again.” The young woman looked around and noticed those who were dancing had stopped and those watching had started clapping. Clearly, the dance was over. With quick steps, Sirena left the dance floor feeling relief that it was over. She made her way back to the group to see one hadn’t returned while the others were looking elsewhere.
“Who was that woman you were with Sirena?” Leliana asked with curiosity. The outlander looked over in the direction that the spymaster was located, the sight that greeted her was Chiara with the duke. That was quite a curious sight indeed but it wasn’t what she was worried about.
“She’s my friend, Chiara.”
“What’s her business with the duke?” The young woman shrugged her shoulders as an answer. How was she supposed to know? It wasn’t like she knew about her friend knowing the one vying for the throne. But since it was brought up, the situation was rather interesting.
“I really don’t know, but she is a really good person and likes to help those in need.” Looking over in Cullen’s direction to see him standing in the same spot but with women surrounding him. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to check on someone.” Without waiting for dismissal, the young woman made her way over to the man she was slowly letting herself love. When she had gotten closer to the crowd, she heard him ask if a lady had touched his ass which caused a lot of giggling amongst them. Her skin grew hot as her heart hammered against her ribcage. She knew that emotion all too well. Keeping her mouth shut and not acknowledging the women, Sirena walked up to Cullen with determination.
“Lady Sirena, did you need anything?” His formality took her by surprise until she remembered where she was at.
“I was wondering if you would like to dance with me?” If she wasn’t wearing makeup everyone would see her red face. Normally it’d be the men to make the first move, but sometimes a woman has to take charge.
“No, thank you.” She was about to move closer to him with excitement until she had heard the rejection. Her heart plummeted as she felt not only disappointment but humiliation as well. From behind, there were women laughing behind their fans. All she wanted to do in that moment was leave and hide.
“Oh… Well, um… Okay then.” Sirena was about to leave when his voice stopped her from doing so.
“No! I didn’t mean to-… Maker’s breath!” It was clear he was frustrated with himself for she saw him pinch the bridge of his nose. “I’ve answered that question so many times, I’m rejecting automatically.” She felt a little better when he began to explain himself. “I’m not one for dancing. The templars have never attended balls.” Did that mean he didn’t know how to dance? Perhaps he didn’t feel confident in his abilities. Her eyes then glanced around at those around them who finally seem to have quieted down.
“It looks like you got yourself quite a bit of admirers. Who are they?”
“I don’t know, but they won’t leave me alone.”
“What? You don’t enjoy them attention?” The American asked with a small smile tugging at her lips.
“Hardly. Anyways, yours- “She noticed the Commander getting a bit flustered when a sound like a throat clearing came from him. “Yours is the only one worth having.” With that statement alone, Sirena wanted to give him some affection to show how his words were appreciated. Sadly, though, it was not the right place for they were on a job. Too bad she couldn’t take him to an empty corner or room. He looked deliciously fine in her eyes. To keep her thoughts from getting worse, she cleared her throat, thinking of a way to leave the conversation.
“Well… Uh… I got to go do something.” The American girl then scampered off away from the one who she was getting close to. As she walked around, the woman began to hear whispers. They weren’t just any whispers, but ones about her. With quick steps while trying to keep herself composed, she found her friend who looked like she was looking for someone as well. When their gazes met, Chiara had the look filled with relief. The brunette made her way over to her friend.
“I got some bad news. There are rumors going around.” Sirena’s heart began to accelerate, pounding hard in her chest. She had to keep her calm, sadly, it’s not her fault. Did the person follow her to Thedas as well? Was there really no escape? Perhaps, it isn’t what she thought. Jumping to conclusions was never a good thing, so, before she got ahead of herself, young American listened to her friend. “The rumors are about you, Sirena. Instead of computers, it is now verbal. It’s a lot of how you harassed someone and worse!” Her face immediately paled for she knew then that it was her anonymous attacker.
“What else was said?” She had to ask in case there was anything new or if it was just the same old, same old.
“Nothing new that I know of. It’s just the usual we have seen.”
“Thanks Chi Chi, keep an ear out in case there is more.” Silently, the outlander watched her friend walk away. With thoughts running through her mind, she rushed over to a spot that was secluded before placing her hand over her beating heart. Before she could do anything, the paranoid girl had to calm down otherwise she won’t be able to think logically, but instead emotionally which would turn out bad. Closing her eyes, Sirena focused on her breathing. Did the torment really follow her again? At once, she could feel her eyes burning as well as her throat tightening; a sign she was going to cry. Of course, she couldn’t let herself due to her make up and the fact someone could interrupt her which would be humiliating.
After calming down to think clearly, the American made her way toward the advisors. She concluded that they needed to know. With Cullen already knowing part of her past, it made things a bit easier to talk to them about her situation. As she made her way, people were staring and spreading the rumors around with glares on their faces. Was this really happening to her? Quickening her steps, she finally found the trio and immediately approached them.
“You have got some explaining to do.” Leliana said like a mother reproaching her daughter. Sirena’s sad blue-green gaze met with Cullen’s. “What is getting spread around sounds quite bad.” Her head hung low as she tried to swallow the lump growing in her throat. Why did it had to be her?
“I didn’t do anything to anyone. There is someone I don’t even know who hates me so much to create rumors about me to make me look bad. I don’t know why either. I don’t even know what the person wants. I have my suspicions that they want me to commit suicide or have me imprisoned on false charges.” Her body had begun to shake starting from her hands which had spread throughout. The reaction was automatic that it couldn’t be stopped, but, lucky for her, she was able to hold the tears back. There was no way she wanted to show her vulnerability to the two women. “Please, for my sake and for potential victims, can we get the person in our custody and put them on trial? I already have a witness who can attest to what I have said.” Sirena could hear the pleading in her own ears. This was important to her. She was tired of feeling paranoid of when the person would strike next; angry because the person wouldn’t leave her alone and made those that didn’t know her turn their backs away from someone who was innocent. It was very hard for the American to deal with.
From the corner of her eyes, she noticed Cullen looking at her like he wanted to comfort her but was unable to. Due to the silence surrounding her, the outlander knew they were silently communicating with each other. She hoped that they would agree to help her since it had already taken its toll on her from when she was living in the modern world. At least her boyfriend would take her side on the situation… hopefully.
“Of course, we will help you and put the person on trial. The hard part is finding out who it is that is spreading the false accusations. We will succeed.” Her head snapped up to look at Cullen to see him smiling. He truly was her hero. The blonde was also thankful to Josephine and Leliana since they were also behind the decision. If she had allowed herself to hug them, she totally would. This could be the end of her troubles.
With subtlety, she noticed Cullen had walked a soldier over to where they were. Sadly, the American couldn’t hear anything due to the area being loud. She assumed it was about finding the person behind the verbal attacks. Was the person so foolish? Either way, whoever it was, was going to get caught which made her feel some relief as well as hope that her torment may soon be ending. As her heart lightened, she heard a bell toll which meant everyone had to be in the ballroom.
Sirena knew this was the part things were going to be interesting. It can either be a quick and simple arrest or there was going to be violence. She could only hope the Inquisitor found enough evidence to not need to kill the woman hosting the party. A distance away, the outlander saw Cullen and Evelyn talking in a corner which made her ponder when he left the area. She wanted to know what the outcome was going to be when a presence made themselves known. Her head turned to see Chiara, who almost made her jump. Seeing the Commander walk away with guards, she knew the decision had been made.
“Hopefully during this mess, they will get the stalker.”
“True that. I don’t know for how much longer I can put up with the person.” The paranoia was not healthy for a young woman her age and it made life not worth it. At the same time anger burned within her. Anger due to why she was chosen for such treatment.
“Are you going to join the fight?” That simple question made her look at her friend like she was crazy.
“Not just no, but, hell no! I am not getting this dress dirty with blood.” It was probably going to be the first and only time anyone would hear her say that. Normally she would join in for the big battles but while dressed very nicely, she wanted to be a little lady-like. Knowing full well on what was to going to happen, she stood at the side with her friend. Immediately, she caught sight of Cullen and Evelyn sharing a look. A look that seemed intimate. At once, Sirena began to chew on her lower lip. Perhaps he found her more interesting? She was from his world and possibly his type. “Um, Chi Chi… Is it just me? Or did Cullen look at Evelyn a little too…?”
“A little bit, yeah, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I wish we were back home. I could show you this Kpop group who are amazing! And the men are hot!” As she talked, the Oregon girl could not help but watch the man she was in a relationship with. “They seem like your kind of group that you’d listen to.”
“What is the name of this group?”
“They are called BTS.” Her eyes blinked a few times wondering if she heard the name before or not.
“They are vaguely familiar. I may have heard something from them before.” All of a sudden, she heard sounds of grunting and groaning which made her turn her head away from where her boyfriend disappeared. The sight that greeted her were of soldiers falling down onto the floor. Her eyes widened for she didn’t have a weapon on her. “We have to hide.” Sirena immediately grabbed her arm and dragged her towards a window and hid behind the curtain. It was an obvious place, but where else could they have gone? They were surrounded by the Duchess’s assassins to the point that if the two even tried to sneak off, they would have been and killed regardless.
One by one, she heard soldiers continue to fall. It was like Therinfall Redoubt all over again except this time she had no weapon on her. Feeling the tremors going through her hands, she curled them into fists so she could hide the shaking. She wanted to be brave and remain calm for her friend but she was only human. Glancing over at Chiara, it was clear that she was just as scared as her.
From behind her, Sirena felt someone had approached. Out of defense, she began to fight off the assailant without any sharp object. Though, she didn’t last very long due to her gown, she did put up a good fight using her martial arts skills. However, she did get subdued. The American felt a sharp metal object press against her neck where an artery was located which meant that if the person decided to slit her throat, she’d be dead within seconds. Her eyes glanced over at her friend only to see her in the same predicament. With slow movement, the girls were escorted out from the curtains to be seen by everyone. The sight that greeted Sirena’s eyes made her want to be sick as she saw men and women, she knew dead or dying on the floor.
“Drop your weapons or these women die.” Her assailant commanded which cause Leliana and Cullen to stop fighting and see what was going on. From where she was standing, Sirena saw looks of worry, anger, and hesitation on his face whereas the spymaster remained steadfast. “Drop them!” It was clear to her that the one holding her hostage liked things done her way and was impatient. “It’s nice that I can also ruin you in person.” Her eyes widened once she realized that the person who was holding a knife or dagger to her neck was none other than her cyberstalker. Immediately, her blood began to boil when she slightly shook her head no to let the others know to not drop their weapons at all cost. She looked over at Chiara to make sure she was okay and noticed that the person holding her was her stalker’s friend. Her gaze turned back to look at her boyfriend only to see him dropping his sword onto the floor, doing as the woman behind her told him to do.
After what felt like an hour to the American woman, she felt the metal blade leave her neck. Finally, being able to look, she turned around and saw both Kiyana and her friend were getting apprehended. All of a sudden, she felt arms slip around her in urgency. Not just any arms, but muscular arms that gave her comfort. She knew exactly who was holding her which caused her to smile and wrapped her own slender arms around him tightly. Sirena had many emotions go through her: fear, anger, shock, to the point it was overwhelming for her. If only she was allowed to run, sadly though, it was too dangerous for her to do so. Finally getting distracted, the woman in the pink dress turned to look at where the loud bang came from and saw the Inquisitor storming into the room. It was clear the woman was pissed. Before anyone could say anything to Evelyn, she basically commanded Empress Celene to talk privately then walked over to a direction. Was she allowed to get away with that? Following her were Gaspard and Brialla. The American girl wondered if she was supposed to follow them. Looking over at the others, she noticed the trio did not follow her therefore Sirena had decided to stay put.
Her eyes looked around to see a few people were looking at her, a lot with anger due to the rumors and some with pity for what had just happened to her and her friend. The blonde hated the attention. How long were the people going to talk for? Finally, the young woman heard sounds like people approaching when she saw the Empress and Gaspard as well as the other two.
“Lords and ladies of the court, we are pleased to announce that an accord has been reached.” While everyone was busy listening to the Empress, Sirena took this as her moment to slip away. She squeezed through different bodies on the dancefloor to get to the stairs. Would she be noticed? Once the outlander made it to the stairs, she made her way up as discreetly as possible which was fairly easy to do given her height. When she made it to the top, the American saw an empty path which she obviously decided to take. Her steps were quick and swift when she found her exit. As Sirena stepped out, she took a deep breath of fresh air. Immediately, she walked over to the stone balcony railing and scanned the landscape to realize where she was standing. Again, the outsider took Evelyn’s place. Did it really matter at that point? It wasn’t like the story changed for the people around her.
As Sirena silently looked out at the scenery, she let her thoughts turn back to what had happened earlier. This was the time she could let her vulnerability finally show for she was alone. Her hands had begun to shake as tears welled up in her eyes from not only getting scared, but also, having all her old emotions come back like a ton of bricks getting thrown at her. All the old feelings she had before coming to Thedas had disappeared; her depression had gone. Hearing the rumors and seeing the girl brought the emotions back. Why couldn’t she get her freedom? Why did Kiyana hate her so much? What had she done to deserve how she was getting treated? Her eyed burned from the unshed tear that so badly wanted to be let free, but she knew that she shouldn’t let anymore fall, for anyone could just walk in on her and that was something no one wanted. Not far from her location, Sirena heard heels click clacking on the floor behind her. Once she sensed the person was near her, she turned her head to look at her.
“Well look who we have here. Someone far from home.” Morrigan said as she stepped next to the outlander.
“Excuse me?” What did this new witch of the wilds mean? Her eyes narrowed at the woman wearing a dark gown which was uncommon in Orlais.
“I know someone like you. Someone who doesn’t quite belong.” Her heart was pounding in her ears. Did this woman know where she really came from? How could that be possible? Sirena then thought of her friend, Chiara wondering if she may have told her. “I am Morrigan and you are Sirena. You are not from here, but obviously, you know that.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You may fool the others, but you can’t fool me or yourself. You have a friend here from what I saw.”
“I have a few good friends.” It was clear the American was being evasive while Morrigan laughed.
“No, your friend, Chiara. I saw you talking to her. I know everything. From the modern world to how she got here which that is still a bit of a mystery.”
“What is it you want?” The woman in dark clothes raised her brows before letting out another laugh like what she said was funny.
“I don’t want anything, but I can find a way for you and your friend to go back home.” A way to go back home? Did she want that still? After being away for so long, she felt like the world she came from seemed so mundane yet it was where she came from. A wave of home sickness washed over her. “I will let you think on it.” Morrigan then stepped away from her and walked away. Was the woman really willing to do that for a stranger? What was the motive? While lost in her thoughts, the twenty-three-year-old did not hear the next person that had come out. A touch from the other’s arm against her own caused her to get startled which when she looked over to see Cullen.
“There you are! Everyone has been looking for you. Things have calmed down for the moment, are you all right?” This man that was standing in front of her care so much to ask how she felt, it made her heart stir.
“I’m just tired. It’s been a very long night.” At that point, she wanted to go to bed and just disappear.
“For all of us, I’m glad it’s over.” As she stared at the open, a warm hand was placed on her upper back. “I worried about you tonight.” To make him fee a little better, one of her hands moved and rested over his as she gave him a small smile that said she was okay.
“I’m alright for the most part.” Sirena watched as he nodded his head before a smile graced his lips.
“I’m glad you’re alright.” Her blue-green gaze met his warm golden-brown orbs with what looked to be happiness. “I may never have a chance like this, so I must ask…” When he moved from his original position, the look of confusion and curiosity crossed her features until his hand held out to her while bowing. “May I have this dance, My Lady?” A blush had risen making her face turn a rosy pink.
“I would love to. I thought you don’t dance.” Sirena remarked as she remembered a previous conversation they had. Her small hand slipped into his as she moved to stand in front of him.
“For you, I’ll try.” The two got into position before they started waltzing around on the balcony. It was like a scene in those romantic films, now she was experiencing it. Surprisingly, he was able to dance very well. Did Chiara meet someone in Thedas like she did? As the American gazed into Cullen’s eyes, she couldn’t help but feel warmth and relief as well as gratitude.
“Thank you for apprehending Kiyana.”
“With what happened in there, I’m sure the Inquisitor won’t let her free.”
“I really hope not. I also think it’d be a great idea for Chiara to come back with us to Skyhold.”
“Your friend, right?” He asked which sounded like he was making sure that what he said was correct.
“Yes, she’s my friend.”
“If she would like to join the Inquisition at Skyhold then she may.”
“I think she did agree when I brought it up to her. If I didn’t then I’m sure she would.” Out of all the advisors, Cullen was the easiest to talk to.
“I’m sure she’d like that very much.” After the dance was over, Sirena couldn’t help but get mesmerized by Cullen for the second time that night. As she stared deeply into his eyes, the American felt herself lean forward while he did the same with her. Slowly, her lips met his soft velvety pair. With the Commander, she knew she could easily lose time.
