Nathavin listened as Starr gave him a detailed report of everything that had happened to her while she’d been held captive while his gaze remained focused on Shin. “You did an excellent job of remaining steadfast, enduring Torvynaar’s tortures.” He rumbled approvingly, his opinion of her increasing. He’d almost thought Torvynaar had gone easy on her. That was until he saw the wounds left on her where a sword, infused with dark energy, had sliced into her flesh, breaking the binding seals on her magic.
Unaccustomed to praise from him, Starr awkwardly remained silent. Dozens of thoughts flew through her head, but she gave voice to none of them. She cast a furtive look at him from the corner of her eye before returning her gaze to Shin, her brow furrowed in concerned worry.
As the healers continued their work, Nathavin spoke again. “He’ll be fine.” He motioned for her to follow him. “I have a job for you, come with me.”
Struggling to keep pace with his longer legged stride, Starr snarked at him. “Oh, no. Don’t slow down on my account. I just had my flesh peeled away from me with a sword, burnt by dark magic… Nothing major…” His reply left her flabbergasted.
“My apologies.” He slowed his pace accordingly. Lifting an eyebrow at her sudden halt, he regarded her silently, fully aware that his apology had momentarily surprised her. As she began walking again, blessedly keeping her tongue in check, he led her through the fortress in quiet for a while before speaking again.
“This is a task that only you can accomplish. And you must not fail. Failure will mean that whatever remains of light elven kind will perish. I don’t want that to happen.” He stopped at a door and turned to face Starr. “It is incumbent upon you to convince your fellow light elf that I, and the dark elves aligned with me, mean no harm.”
Her head tilted slightly, she gazed at him. This was unusual, and not a request she would’ve expected from him. “There is another light elf in there?” She questioned, her gaze never leaving his. At his affirmative nod, she stood motionless for a moment before continuing. “You want me to convince this other light elf to join you?”
Nathavin nodded resolutely. “Yes. Convince your brethren to join us, just as you have done.” He ignored the small twitch of her ear, indicating her anger and frustration.
Opening the door, he gestured for her to step inside. “Starr… do not fail me.” Inwardly he cursed. His voice had reflected his turbulent emotions. Taking advantage of her startlement at hearing the despondency in his voice so plainly, he gave her a solid nudge inside the room and closed the door.
Desperate….
The word rang in her mind. He’d sounded … desperate… But why would he? He commanded a very large force of dark elves, why would he sound so…
As her gaze swept around the impressive quarters, her eyes widened in alarm as a figure moved into the light of the fire. “Princess Caellia?!...”
Astonishment crossed Caellia’s face before her gaze swept over the other light elf, her face twisting in rage. “What’ve those monsters done to you?!” Anger colored her voice liberally. “Nathavin will rue the day he attacked you! Attacked us!”
Oh Eva… Starr suddenly realized the enormity of the task Nathavin had handed her… She couldn’t do this… Princess Caellia was royalty! Starr wasn’t, there was no chance that the Princess would listen to her…

Hours later, Shin was awake and moving about slowly. He wondered where Starr was, but the healers had simply informed him that Nathavin had given her another assignment immediately upon their return. A vicious curse escaped him. She’d barely survived Torvynaar and already Nathavin had sent her on another mission?!
The sound of a door opening and closing drew his attention. Eyes narrowing in carefully guarded anger, he glared at Nathavin for a moment before biting out. “Where did you send her?” What the hell was wrong with Nathavin? She hadn’t even had time to heal yet…
Sitting on a nearby chair, Nathavin answered Shin calmly. “She’s currently in the western wing.”
“The only thing on the western wing of the fortress is your quarters…” Shin snapped, his anger diffusing slightly. If she was here, then she wasn’t in danger. “I want to see her. Now.”
Nathavin nodded lightly, recognizing Shin’s tone as one that indicated a refusal wouldn’t be tolerated. No matter how injured he was, he would absolutely pick his swords up if his demand was denied. “I will see to it that she is safely returned to your quarters. She can explain to you the assignment I’ve given her.”
Without a word, Shin turned and began making his way back to the quarters he shared with Starr that Nathavin had provided him previously. Once there, he crossed to the liquor cabinet and poured himself a generous helping of the strongest liquor available. With a sigh, he sat carefully on the low slung lounge, trying to avoid the more tender spots. Sipping the liquor, he thought back to his fight with Torvynaar, an angered scowl crossing his features as he did so. “Next time…” Shin uttered quietly and with grim determination, his voice full of venom.
Losing track of time, he didn’t know how long he’d waited when Starr finally entered their quarters. Standing from the lounge, he gazed at her somberly for a moment. “Let’s go to bed.”
She cautiously followed him, somewhat perplexed by his momentary silence before speaking. As they prepared to sleep, her gaze swept over his form, taking note of the still healing bruises and various scrapes that the healers had either missed or had not considered an immediate concern and had therefore focused on other, more serious, injuries. Climbing into bed, they settled into their by now habitual positions and fell asleep quickly.
While Starr slept soundly, Shin stayed awake, unable to sleep. He couldn’t pinpoint why he was unable to rest, however. The night passed slowly and peacefully and eventually he drifted to sleep. He was later awakened as he felt the bed shift. Eyes opening fractionally, he kept his breathing steady and even as his hand snaked out and caught her wrist in a gentle but unyielding grip. His voice roughened with exhaustion, he spoke, a trace of aggravation coloring his voice. “Every, single, time, you leave my bed, you disappear.” Tugging her back down, he continued. “Not tonight. Tonight, you stay here.” Shin pulled her back into the bed, draping his arm over her waist and lightly holding her to him.
Relenting, Starr relaxed again and let him pull her closer to him. She’d only wanted a drink of water, but that could wait. Grimacing, she also realized he had a valid point.
Meanwhile, in the west wing, Nathavin kept a wary eye on Caellia as she paced their quarters in agitation as she levied death threats against him. She had no ability to carry out any of them, however. But she wasn’t letting that stop her from issuing them. Clearly Starr had not managed to make any progress tonight.
Observing Caellia closely, Nathavin felt a thrill course through him at one of her more creative threats. Standing up, he grinned playfully at her. “Would you care to try that?...” Chuckling darkly at Caellia’s momentary expression of panic, he braced himself for her attack she would undoubtedly unleash as soon as the panic had passed…

Torvynaar paced the halls of the caverns angrily, Shin had once again bested him. Thiefiell had thoroughly castigated him all night, uncaring of the injuries that scored his body. Uncaring of the blood loss that had very nearly killed him.
He’d failed in his mission to acquire information on Nathavin. He’d failed in his mission to recapture Starr. He’d failed in his mission to apprehend Shin…
He’d failed…
That was the only thing that mattered to Thiefiell.
His hands closed into fists… Next time he saw Shin, he’d kill him…
