Thirty-Four
Karidormi stared at the small gathering before her, caught somewhere between relief and disbelief. Athena and her small flight stood in the small clearing in front of the Everglade inn, along with Anduin, Wrathion, and Shalya. Shandris and Dashiell stood nearby. The night elf looked almost disappointed, and Karidormi couldn't blame her. Anduin and Wrathion seemed to have a knack for getting into trouble without adult supervision, and the two of them were her responsibility to keep alive before they were anyone else's. Shalya simply looked impassive though Karidormi was sure the girl was the whole reason why things were unfolding as they were. Shaking herself, the bronze dragon stepped forward and met Athena's gaze without flinching."We don't have much time." Karidormi said. "We'll have to fly, and we'll have to fly fast."
Athena's red eyes glinted. "That won't be a problem for us. We can carry those who can't transform."
"We'll have to retrace our path through the Blade's Edge to get back to Zangarmarsh." Karidormi said. "We can't just fly the entire time."
"Of course we can. Unless you're saying your little wings won't handle the strain?" Athena said with a smirk. Karidormi glowered at her. The black dragon waved a hand in a dismissive gesture. "We won't have to walk under the mountains. We'll just fly over them."
"Wait." Dashiell stepped forward. "We're going to fly over the mountains?"
"Yeah, why not?" Sadi replied, arms crossed over his chest. "We do it all the time. The spires are the most dangerous part, but they're easy to avoid."
"It might be easy for you dragons, but the air up there is thin. How do you expect us to be able to breathe?"
"Adventurers do it all the time." Irritanion said, speaking for the first time since he'd joined them. "There are five dragons capable of carrying a rider. There are four of you. You do the math."
"We don't have time to argue," Anduin said, breaking up the argument between Irritanion and Dashiell before it had time to escalate. "We need to get back to Azeroth as soon as we can. There's no telling what's been happening in our absence. We could be going back into a full scale war."
"Or we could be going back to a post-war Azeroth under the control of a madman." Shalya pointed out. There was a soft murmur of agreement from the group.
"Let's hope that's not what we're going into." Anduin said softly.
"Wouldn't hurt to have a plan of some kind though." Dashiell said. "If Khargol is going to act like he has been, then he'll have something waiting for us either on this side of the Dark Portal or the other."
"Or he couldn't have anyone waiting." Sadirion pointed out. "He doesn't know that you've found us, right?"
"It shouldn't matter whether he knows about you or not," Dashiell responded. "We still need some sort of plan that would allow us to make it to our destination safely."
Karidormi held up her hand to forestall any argument about to come from either the black dragons or her group. "Standing around and talking is only giving our enemies more time to prepare, and it's cutting our chances of doing anything about the situation we're trying to change. We should get moving."
"Karidormi's right," Athena said. She shifted, moving to a more open space so she could transform. The giant black dragon peered down at them with a single crimson eye. "We'll talk as we move. The sooner we get back to where you need to be, the better."
While the dragons changed shape, Anduin, Shalya, Dashiell, and Shandris picked a mount and settled on the backs of their chosen dragons. Anduin and Shalya rode Tyrrania and Irritanion respectively; Shandris rode Sadirion, and Dashiell rode Karidormi. Wrathion changed forms and fluttered over to Anduin, settling on the boy's back and clinging to him with his tiny claws. Athena took the lead of the group and raised her massive wings high, blotting out what little sunlight actually reached their little clearing. She looked at the faces of the two-legged creatures, then the faces of the dragons. Her lips curled to reveal teeth as sharp as finely honed knives.
"Let's go." Athena snarled softly. Then she leaped into the sky, driving herself skyward with a powerful down thrust of her wings. Behind her, the other dragons leaped into the air, following Athena's path above the trees and toward the rising spires of the Blade's Edge.
There wasn't any wind to take them upwards, so the dragons had to labor to rise close enough to the mountains, high enough where the sun was able to create pockets of warm air they could use to rise even higher. The spires of the mountains jutted out toward them like grasping fingers, each spear of stone reaching out to try and catch the soft membranes of their wings. The black dragons had little difficulty navigating the spires; they'd been born here and had flown among such hazards all their lives. Only Karidormi struggled, often swinging wide around the spires before climbing upwards.
Once they were above the spires, the air became hazy with the morning heat and the thin clouds that formed high over the Blade's Edge Mountains. Here Athena took the lead, her powerful wings displacing the haze as she lead the others over the highest parts of the mountains. Anduin gazed down from Tyra's back and saw the ground below dissected by thick, jagged brown spears. Further below, he could see mountain paths that dissected the Blade's Edge Mountains into quadrants, and he could see the smoky tendrils of civilization. Ahead, he saw nothing but the edges of the world, and then there was a shock of blue green as they left the Blade's Edge behind and soared into Zangarmarsh.
Athena tilted on a wing, and gently curved over the giant caps of the mushrooms, heading toward the path that would take them to Hellfire Peninsula. The other dragons followed suit, the smaller dragons, like Tyra and Irri, flapping harder to keep up with the larger dragons, Athena, Karidormi, and Sadi. Anduin felt Wrathion's claws dig into his shoulder as Tyra made the turn, and canted his head to the side a bit to look at his friend.
"You okay?" He called over the rushing wind.
Wrathion's crimson eyes focused on Anduin's blue ones. "I'm fine." Answered the Black Prince. "It's a little easier for you to hang on against gravity, considering."
Anduin smirked. "You could've stayed in your human form."
"And which dragon do you think would've carried me then?"
"Athena probably would've." Answered Tyra, stilling her wings to glide for a moment. "But then, she probably would've told you to stop being lazy."
Wrathion gestured with a tiny paw. "See?"
Anduin laughed again. "Get used to it, 'Thion. These guys are going to be your new family."
"Great. Wonderful. Is it too late to go back to being the only sane black dragon in all of Azeroth?"
"Yes. Yes it is."
Tyra laughed. "You see? You should've thought about that before you came here hunting for us. Now you have to deal with two older sisters and two older brothers, and none of us care how smart you are."
Wrathion glowered at Tyra. "I orchestrated the genocide of my corrupt brethren. What makes you think I can't do the same to you?"
Tyra angled her head back to look at them with a single crimson eye. The orb glinted dangerously. "Do you really want to tread that path, Wrathion?"
Anduin was glad Wrathion didn't retort. He was on Tyra's back, too, after all. So Anduin reached to pat Wrathion on the head as a way of trying to mollify his friend. "Look, having older siblings isn't that bad."
"How would you know? You don't have any." Wrathion replied sullenly.
"No," Anduin said slowly, "but I understand the concept. I mean, look at Giramar and Galadin. They're always getting into trouble with each other. Siblings argue and fight and annoy each other. It's in the contract. But for as much as they annoy each other, siblings will defend each other with their lives."
Wrathion eyed him for a moment. "All my siblings would have destroyed Azeroth, so in theory I know what you're talking about."
Anduin rolled his eyes. Tyra chuckled. "You'll get used to it. Be prepared for irritation, nosiness, over-protective bossiness, and all-around fun."
Wrathion made a non-committal sound and clung tighter to Anduin.
The dragons crossed Zangarmarsh in record time, and soon the red, cracked earth of Hellfire Peninsula loomed before them. Athena banked and alighted on a ledge that overlooked Hellfire Peninsula's expanse. The others alighted on either side of her. Athena looked out over the crimson-hued earth, her lips drawing back to display sharp teeth. "We're going to fly fast and fly hard from this point. We have no reason to assume there isn't an ambush waiting for us somewhere out there, or even when we cross from this world to the other. We don't stop to fight; our priority is to get to Azeroth. Once we do, we can fight to our heart's content."
"You wouldn't mind fighting only the people we point you at, right?" Karidormi said, gazing at the large black dragon.
Athena only smiled. "Of course not."
They launched into the air, flapping as hard and as fast as they could. The miles sped away, a red cracked blur beneath them. It was still an hour before they saw the beginnings of Hellfire Citadel, and a half hour more before it came clearly into view. They passed it, hearing only the faint howling of the fel orcs below. They followed the path carved into the land by ancient feet and still-living demons until they could see in the distance their goal - the Dark Portal. Athena suddenly stopped and hung suspended in the air, her wings working to keep her aloft. Landing was a very bad idea, considering there were still demons roaming about below. The other dragons stopped as well, hovering as they waited for Athena to say something.
She didn't have to.
They rose into the air in front of them, three golem dragons made of hard rock, three earth elementals trapped in service and sent to stop them.
Karidormi let a growl issue forth from her throat. "Those are the same as the one I fought. They feel no pain, know no mercy. They'll kill us all if given the chance."
Athena's eyes glittered. "They don't have to feel pain to know they're going to be set free from that miserable existence." She drew back her head, opened her maw, and bellowed a long, deafening, challenging roar. Sadirion, Irritanion, and Tyrannia echoed her, their voices forming one long chain of challenge to their enemy.
Karidormi looked back at Dashiell. "Stay low and hold on tight. This is going to get rough."
Dashiell signaled Shandris and the others. "Don't have to tell me twice. Thing is, if these guys are on this side of the Portal, what's waiting on the other side?"
The golem dragons launched forward, their stony wings grating as they rushed headlong into battle against Athena and the others. Karidormi hissed softly. "Let's hope whatever's there is on our side."
Dashiell grinned only because it was the only thing he could do. The first of the golem dragons reached them then, and then the fight was on with the kind of viciousness only dragons were capable of.
