Over the next few weeks, Starr and Princess Caellia had begun eating breakfast together in the quarters shared by Caellia and Nathavin. “How dare they give you such revealing armor…” Caellia groused yet again, eyeing Starr’s dark elven designed leather armor with clear distaste. “It’s scandalous… far too revealing…”
Starr glanced down at her dragon leather armor briefly, taking a moment to formulate her answer. “I agree, it is more revealing than I would like.” Her gaze swept over Caellia’s garments, the robes were similarly styled to that of the dynastic sets of some of the higher level mage’s, but they had no intrinsic magical abilities. And they were blue in color, rather than the standard red. But most importantly, they were still light elven in design, and therefore modest.
“Then why do you wear it?” Caellia questioned sharply.
Pursing her lips into a thin, straight line, Starr resisted the urge to sigh. “As I’ve previously explained, it was this or nothing.” Caellia began to speak again and Starr cut her off. “We’ve already gone over this. My choices were few, and none of them were good. I had to pick my battles wisely, battling over armoring wasn’t a battle worth fighting.” Her thoughts drifted to her and Shin’s arguments during her first days with him. Irritatingly she could now understand his frustration with her because she was now experiencing that frustration with Caellia.
Spearing a piece of fruit with her fork a tad aggressively, Starr plopped it in her mouth and listened as Caellia once again began discussing methods of escape. “None of those ideas will work.” She stated calmly. “First, you have no access to a weapon. Second, even if you did, you are still far outnumbered. Third, you would have to cross the length of the fortress to make it to one of the outer walls. That’s a distance of around three hundred standard yards.” A grim smile crossed her features at Caellia’s forlorn expression. “Nathavin does nothing in half measures, this fortress is as big as a small castle.” The smile fell from her face. “And fourth, you would then have to scale the outer wall.”
Caellia slumped in her chair for a moment before straightening up. “I noticed that you’ve used the word ‘you’ in your rejection of my plan quite extensively. I want to make it clear that I expect you to join me in this escape.”
Gazing at Caellia, Starr understood that the Princess, her Princess, her rightful commander, had just issued an order. “We can certainly attempt it, but we will fail at it. And in that failed attempt we may be grievously injured or perhaps even killed.” Unlikely, given the degree of attachment both Nathavin and Shin had over the two of them.
“Better to die in an attempt at living freely than to die as prisoners.” Caellia quipped. A moment of silence passed before she continued. “So, I’ll expect to see you tonight…” She continued informing Starr of her plan to escape.
Sighing heavily, Starr listened intently, focusing on the plan Caellia had hatched for their escape. It wasn’t going to work. The guards were too vigilant, too well trained, too many in number. “As you wish, Princess Caellia.” Placing her fingers to her temples, Starr began methodically rubbing in circular patterns, trying desperately to ward off the massive headache that was beginning to throb painfully.

Later that night, Shin stood guard at the northern wall of the fortress, Nathavin standing to his left. Both men were actually outside the fortress and hidden in the forest that surrounded it. Their eyes were fixed on the wall while their ears heard every sound coming from within.
As expected, the warning cries from the sentries within the fortress broke through the still quiet of the night. The sounds of spells being cast and metal striking metal pierced the nighttime silence. Just as they’d planned, the sounds died down relatively swiftly and then they saw two figures hastily climb over the top of the wall and jump nimbly to the ground.
Starr and Caellia quickly scanned the forest around them before darting into it, seeking out camouflage in it’s dense foliage. “You go first!” Starr breathed out in a whisper, pushing Caellia in front of her. As Caellia ran ahead, Starr glanced behind them. They weren’t being followed by the guards. Which meant that Shin and Nathavin had either called them off, or had previously given orders not to follow. Turning away from the fortress, Starr followed after Caellia.
“Let them run ahead for a few minutes.” Nathavin intoned quietly. The two stayed still and silent for a short while and then they began moving at the same time, long years of serving together enabling them to work as a team seamlessly. It didn’t take them long to catch up to Starr and Caellia.
“Where do we go from here?” Starr questioned, her voice tired as she rested.
Before Caellia could answer, several arrows landed in front of her in a spray of dirt and rocks. “You go back to the fortress from here.” Nathavin uttered with quiet and resolute conviction.
Swinging her bow up to fire, Caellia was surprised when she found it ripped from her hands. “Starr! What are you doing?!”
Nathavin answered quickly, not allowing Starr to speak. “She’s following the orders of her Lord.”
Caellia’s gaze flicked back and forth between Nathavin and Starr a couple times before she growled angrily at Starr. “You told him our plan…”
Allowing his spell of concealment to fall away, Shin refuted her. “No, she told me of the plan. I then informed Nathavin.” He approached Starr and took Caellia’s bow from her.
“Telling you is no different than telling Nathavin himself!” Spat Caellia, her angered gaze never leaving Starr. “You traitor…”
Starr involuntarily flinched at the accusation. It was true, however. “I’m sorry, Princess.” Her gaze held Caellia’s steadily. “We cannot survive this without their help.”
She angrily cut off Caellia’s protestations to the contrary. “I’ve seen the world without us in it! I’ve lived it!” Her chest heaved as sadness filled her. “You were protected, as you should be, you haven’t seen the world as I have.”
She glanced at Shin. “I wouldn’t be alive right now if not for him.” Their gazes met and locked, each remembering all the times she could’ve been killed if he hadn’t stepped in.
Sensing a change in the atmosphere between Shin and Starr, Nathavin quickly approached Caellia. Taking her hand in one of his, he uttered a swift spell and magic enveloped the both of them, returning them to the fortress.
“It’s nice to finally hear you acknowledge that.” His voice was low, cautious.
Starr dropped her gaze. She felt shame for how she’d treated him initially. “I guess I had to experience it from this side to understand it.”
Shin nodded slightly, his hand reaching for hers and pulling her to him. “And now that you have…?”
“I’m not sure…” She admitted hesitantly.
He chuckled, the sound breaking the tension. “I do believe this is the first time I’ve ever heard you struggle for something to say.” Pulling her into a hug, he kissed the top of her head. “Come on, I think I know what will loosen that tongue of yours…”
