Thirty-Five
Varian glowered at the missive in his hand, then looked up at the man who'd brought it. "You're absolutely certain?"The SI:7 agent nodded. "As sure as we can be without provoking the Horde into some kind of retaliation. These dark shaman are moving up through Horde territory in Stranglethorn Vale and are heading toward the Blasted Lands. There are even reports coming in from Nethergarde Keep stating that there's an army massing on the outskirts of the Dark Portal. Not only that, a good portion of this Dark Horde army is heading to Alterac, where the Frostwolves make their home. There hadn't been any overt signs that they're heading there to fight, but..."
"But it's implied, and we'd be foolish to assume that they're heading that way just to have tea and cookies."
"Your words, not mine, my lord."
Varian crushed the paper in his hand and looked to Genn. "How long do you think we'd have if we started to mobilize?"
"Before our enemies realized we were moving to intercept them, or before Vol'jin decides he can't let us have all the fun?" Replied the Gilnean king.
"Both."
Genn rubbed his jaw. "If we started moving now, we could get an army to defend the Dark Portal there in a matter of minutes due to the portal here in the city. That might be the only advantage we have. As for heading to Alterac, providing the large number of warriors isn't spotted by spies and look-outs, I'd say we'd probably have a few days."
"There is the Wildhammer clan," the rogue pointed out. "They make their home in the Hinterlands, but with the gryphons, they'd be able to at least provide a distraction while we moved our people into place."
"There's also our forces stationed outside of Tarren Mill." Greymane said. "They're the closest to Alterac, but they're also under constant surveillance by the Horde stationed in Tarren Mill. They wouldn't be able to move as fast or as quickly, not if we wanted to keep the Horde from reacting."
Varian rubbed his jaw. There were too many variables, too many potential explosive situations, in this newest conflict to contend with, especially with the limited resources they had available to them. How could he hope to stop whatever was coming without engaging in more hostilities with the Horde? Even if he sent a message to Vol'jin warning him of the Alliance's intentions, he had no guarantee that Vol'jin wouldn't send his troops to defend Horde interests or send them to help the Alliance with the threat of the Dark Horde.
Someone banged on the door and a breathless messenger ran in. She handed a slip of paper to the SI:7 agent then hurried back out, slamming the door behind her. The rogue read the slip of paper, a crease forming in his brow the longer he stared at the words there. Finally, he looked up at the kings and wordlessly handed the paper to Varian.
Varian read the words there. Then he read them again. A low growl issued from his throat, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Genn tense, much like a wolf did when unsure of the enemy before him. Varian handed the paper to Genn. "These Dark Shaman have overrun the battlements before the Dark Portal. They're trying to bring it down."
Genn frowned. "Why? What's there to gain by doing so?"
"The only explanation I have is that Anduin's on the other side, in Outland, and he found something these Dark Shaman don't what him coming back with." Varian growled. Something twisted in his chest, a tightening that made him want to move, to run to Anduin and kill whatever was trying to kill his son. He ignored it. "We need to send reinforcements to the Dark Portal."
"And who will lead them?" Genn asked. "We can get there easily enough - the portal to the Blasted Lands will give us a bit of an advantage - but without a leader, one capable of anticipating these Dark Shaman's attacks, we might as well stay put."
Varian smirked, and it was a cold, dangerous smirk. "Staying put isn't an option. We need to keep them from bringing down that portal."
Before he could say anything more, another knock sounded, and this time Kalec entered. He was smeared with dust and grime, having been helping to try to put the Stormwind Keep back together. He paused as he eyed Varian, then squared his shoulders. "What do you want me to do now?" Asked the former Aspect of Magic.
Varian exchanged looks with Greymane. The king of Stormwind looked back at Kalec. "We've gotten word that the Dark Shaman are trying to bring down the Dark Portal. We need someone to take our forces there and give them some protection from elementals."
Kalec blinked. "You do realize I have no jurisdiction over shamanism?"
"The point is, you'll be able to shield out forces from the worst of it." Genn said. "At the very least, you can keep the Portal from coming down."
"And where are you going that you need me to help out?"
"Alterac." Varian said, almost bitingly.
Kalec lifted a blue eyebrow. "You want me to get Jaina? Otherwise, without her, it'll probably take too long for you to move an entire army there, especially if you're trying not to catch Vol'jin's attention."
"The thing is, we want to catch Vol'jin's attention."
They all looked at Varian with wide eyes.
"Why would you want to go and do something stupid like that?" Greymane asked.
Varian smiled. "Because we've already warned him. He knows what to look for. And if he sees us moving, he'll move too."
"And since the enemy will be focused on us and not on the Horde, then they'll be caught between two forces that they can't hope to defeat." Said Kalec. He put a hand to his jaw and rubbed his chin. "That sounds good in theory, Varian, but what guarantee do you have that the Horde just won't continue the fight once the Dark Horde is taken care of?"
"It's not a guarantee, not exactly." Varian eyed each of the men present in the room with him. "But I believe in Anduin."
"There's no telling if your boy is even part of this madness, Varian." Genn said.
Varian just looked at the Gilnean king. Didn't say anything, just looked. Kalec shifted then and raised his hand. "If you think its worth it, I'll contact Jaina and get her over here. After that, I'll get down to the portal and take your troops through there. If you believe Anduin's in Outland, I'll do what I can to keep the Dark Portal up."
Varian nodded. Genn just sighed.
As Kalec turned and left the room, Varian gave instructions to the SI:7 agent, who quickly followed the blue dragon's path out of the room, leaving Varian and Genn alone. Varian met Genn's eyes evenly, every line of his body just a little tense. The Gilnean gave a simple shrug. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen. Genn followed Varian as the younger king started to leave the room they were in, heading to no doubt marshal the troops and whoever else would join in the campaign to save the Dark Portal, and quite possibly the world.
Again.
