Thirty-Six
Athena bent a wing and fell into a spiral, chasing down one of her own as Sadirion spun through the air, trying to avoid being hit by a molten fireball. She tucked her other wing and darted around another attacker despite her enormous size. Her spiked tail whipped around behind her and caught her enemy on the flank. It did little to deter the golem dragon, and in fact only seemed to make it more intent on finding a way to sink its teeth into her throat and shake the life from her.Athena drew her lips back and growled. She spun in a corkscrew to avoid the golem dragon's claws and slapped it away with her tail as she completed the spiraling turn. The golem dragon roared as it tumbled head over tail toward the ground below. It recovered far too quickly for her liking and charged headlong at her, only to get caught in a wash of sand. Karidormi shot by, a streak of gold, then twisted with her wings tight to her body before flaring them out to her full span, issuing a roar that made Athena laugh. Athena drew back her head, flexed her throat as she inhaled a huge amount of air, directing it away from her lungs. The air mixed with the liquid fire surging up from the fire "lung" in her belly and as she opened her maw to expel the mixture, it ignited and turned molten as it left her jaws. The mixture splattered over the sand-encased golem dragon, igniting the sand and turning it into diamond. The trapped dragon plummeted to the ground where it shattered into a thousand pieces.
Athena whipped her head around at a cry and saw Sadirion falling toward the earth, a great rent in the membrane of his left wing. He flapped uselessly, trying to keep Shandris pointed toward the sky rather than the ground. Shandris was clinging tight to him, her head tucked under her shoulder as she fought to keep her hold on his scales and her glaive, which was being attacked by the wind in an effort to pull it from her grip. Athena started after them, only to find her way blocked by one of the two remaining golem dragons. She roared in its face, her massive wings spreading wide in an effort to make herself look even larger than she was already. She swore the golem dragon laughed at her, its ruby eyes sparking with an intelligence that made her feel as though she was staring down another dragon, and not just a collection of elementals forced to do some shaman's bidding.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Irritanion and Shalya closing with the last of the golem dragons. She saw Karidormi heading toward her and almost snapped at the bronze to go help Sadi, except Athena knew Kari wouldn't be able to reach him and Shandris in time. The only one who could was Tyrannia and she was backing up Irritanion.
Or so Athena thought.
Tyra shot past her, wings folded tight to her body, Anduin leaning as low as he could over her back with Wrathion clinging to the human as tightly as he could. Athena didn't see what happened next for the golem dragon was on her, tearing at the crux of her throat. Athena shook her head violently from side to side to dislodge the beast, then beat it back with a kick of her hind legs. She wasn't surprised she missed; the golem dragon was the size of a drake and had its swiftness. She had the advantage of age and experience, but Athena knew that was all she had going for her.
Karidormi swerved past Athena's shoulder, nicking the flesh-like membrane of the golem dragon's wings with her talons. The blood elf on her back, Dashiell, leaped across the distance and landed on the golem dragon's back. His daggers flashed in the red light of Hellfire Peninsula and came down with a resounding clang on the golem dragon's hard stone skin.
The dragon howled and writhed, fighting and failing to get at the smaller creature on its back. It twisted awkwardly at the waist, almost 180 degrees, something no normal dragon could do. Athena raked her left claw across the golem dragon's exposed front, her claws ripping through stone like a hot knife through butter. Dashiell let out a wild whoop as he leapt clear and Karidormi caught the elf by his middle, wheeling away before she got in Athena's way. The huge black dragon let out a war cry as she closed her right claw around the golem dragon and made to crush it between her talons.
Something small and hard hit her on the right wing, forcing it to crumple inward. It was such a shock that Athena released her prey and rolled to the side, falling about a thousand feet before she was able to right herself. She looked up to see the second golem dragon hurtling toward her again, its maw open to reveal diamond teeth. Above, Irri and Shalya fought to get free of what looked to be some kind of wind netting. The golem dragon collided with Athena and it locked itself around her like a ravenous wolf locked itself on the throat of its prey. Nothing Athena could do freed her from its grasp, and the red cracked ground was rushing up at her fast.
She realized the golem dragon intended to break her neck with the impact.
"I don't care who you are," Athena snarled, talking not to the golem but whoever was on the other side, "but you aren't going to kill me."
As if to prove her point, Athena began to thrash from side to side, forcing the golem to try to cling harder or slip off. She felt some scales ripping out from her hide due to the golem's claws but still she thrashed. Athena rolled violently in a complete rotation, angling herself now for the ground. Above, she heard cries of her name, Sadi's voice, and Kari's, but still Athena pointed her nose toward the ground.
Earth-Warder? Don't make me laugh. I'm not Earth-Warder material. I'm my father's daughter.
Athena bared her fangs...
And snapped her wings out violently meters before she hit the ground. She was expecting the massive strain, the increased effect of gravity on her body, but even still, her bones ached fiercely for the maneuver. She hadn't done such a move since her drake years, when she'd been much, much smaller. Still, the effect was the same as it had been all those years ago - her body snapped upward with such force that the golem dragon gripping her was feeling the effects of gravity far more acutely than she, and because of it, it couldn't keep its hold on her. Black scales and blood flew into the air, spattered the ground, as the golem dragon came loose. It hit the ground, kicking up a huge cloud of red dust. Athena thrust her wings down as hard as she could to slow her momentum and to rise at least a few more feet into the air to make as graceful a landing as she could.
The last golem dragon hit her square between the shoulder blades, driving her down into the earth with enough added force to smash her entire head through the first few inches of cracked ground. Athena lay stunned, panting.
The golem dragon landed beside her head and stared into her crimson eyes with its own. The maw parted to reveal a sandstone tongue. "What was it you said, beast?" Came a voice here and yet not here. "That I wouldn't be able to kill you?"
When Athena made no reply, the golem dragon stepped closer and rested a claw on her throat, where the scales were the softest. "What were you hoping to accomplish, beast? Did you think that you could actually win against me? Do you even know who I am?"
The pressure increased on Athena's throat. Behind the golem dragon threatening to choke her, the one that had tried to bring her down was struggling to rise. She saw that the impact had shattered most of its legs. It rose on stumps, and began a sort of hopping crawl toward them. Athena rolled her eyes to look at the sky, then thought better of it. She focused her gaze on the golem dragon and cracked a smile.
"The question you should be asking yourself, Khargol," Athena began, and she caught a hint of surprise and astonishment from the golem dragon, "is what were you hoping to accomplish, and if you really know who I am."
He hesitated. That was all Shandris needed.
The glaive, covered in a thin film of Sadirion's molten fire, sliced through the golem dragon's leg at the elbow joint, severing the stone and releasing Athena from its pinning weight. She didn't give the golem a chance to recover; she surged toward it with her maw wide open. She clamped her jaw around the golem dragon's head and shook it viciously from side to side, tearing its head from its shoulders on the fourth violent pass. She spat out the head and got to her feet, staring down at the ruby eyes that still had some semblance of life.
"Run, Khargol, run and hide. Or stay and fight. I don't give a damn which you do." Athena growled lowly, though she knew he'd hear. "I'm coming for you, and nothing in the world - not power, not strength, nothing - is going to stop me from finding you and ripping you limb from limb."
The light in the dragon's ruby eyes went out. Athena turned toward the last of the golem dragons, only to find it in pieces of smoldering stone. Sadirion stood nearby, smoke still rising from his parted jaws.
"Athena!"
"Are you okay?"
She turned her head at the voices and watched Tyrannia and Anduin glide downward toward her, stopping to hover in the air for a moment before touching down. Irritanion and Karidormi followed, each landing at a respectful distance. Anduin leaped from Tyra's back and rushed to Athena's side, placing his hand inches above the worst of her wounds. Athena lifted her lips in a grimace as she felt cool healing magic flow through her body.
"I'm fine," Athena assured them. She waited until Anduin stepped back from her to flare her wings. Dust still kicked up around the human boy, forcing him to cover his face. "Our little friend knows we're coming for sure now. We'd best start flying again."
Karidormi came forward. "Can you make it?"
Athena gave her a cutting look. "I wouldn't be who I am if I couldn't make it."
Karidormi narrowed her eyes. "In case you forgot, you're the one on all our hopes ride. Excuse me for worrying about your well-being." She flared her wings and launched skyward, angling for the Dark Portal.
Sadirion stepped close to Athena, looking at the healing wounds before looking up at Karidormi. From on his back, Shandris said, "You shouldn't tease her so, especially after what we just went through."
Athena snorted. "Just go. I doubt we have the time to stand here chit-chatting."
Sadirion launched into the sky, followed by Tyra and Irri. Athena launched into the sky last, heading toward the huge construct at the end of the valley. She watched her small flight approach the Dark Portal and laughed to herself.
Run, Khargol, run. Hide, if you want. Fight if you choose. Either way, you're going to die. I'm not Deathwing. I'm not Sinestra. But I'm my parents' daughter, and I'll bring the fury of the earth down on you for trying to kill me.
