Nathavin stared at the space Caellia had been in rapidly rising anger. His enraged gaze swept to Kattath, “Gather our forces, we are taking her BACK!”
Kattath bowed low as she closed her gift of sight to him. His aura was a pure black with gold and silver streamers and there seemed to be little explosions of dark angry purple scattered throughout his aura. She had never seen him so angry, his aura seemed to stretch and fill the cavern. She quickly began to run and gather all of their forces residing in the caverns while Nathavin went to the temple. She didn’t envy the Tetrarch or the other masters. As enraged as Nathavin was, she’d bet they’d be more worried of him.

Caellia blinked at the bright sunlight that filtered down through the massive branches of the Mother Tree. She was home, but she barely registered that fact as she whirled around to face Baelthal, “What have you done?!” She asked accusingly.
Baelthal glared right back at her in silence before Nalia stepped between them. “He’s done what I asked him to do.”
“Why?! Why did you do this Nalia?” Caellia trembled in rage at her friend. “How could you do this? I told you I was fine!”
“You are not fine Caellia! That elf has twisted your mind! He’s stolen you away from your own people, and I won’t tolerate it!” Nalia got within inches of Caellia, “A few months ago you wouldn’t be arguing with me over this, you’d be thanking me. Whatever happened to the Caellia I knew?”
“She grew up and opened her eyes.” Caellia retorted bitterly, “Now I must speak with High Priest Asterios. I’m sure you’ll…excuse me, while I confer with him.” Caellia scathingly bit out as she stepped aside Nalia. She had to inform Asterios of the alliance and Nathavin, and the trouble there would be if they attempted to fight him.

Nathavin glared at Tetrarch Thifiell as he explained the situation regarding Caellia’s disappearance and the alliance. It was near the end of his explanation that he produced the scrolls he’d received from Goryn. The one that had been penned by his adoptive father which Goryn had taken from Goddard when he’d sieged it and the one Goryn had stolen from Asadar.
“Caellia is the one?” Magister Harne asked incredulously. “She is Lord Erenor’s daughter?”
“It would appear so.” Thifiell replied slowly, giving Nathavin a calculating look. “Very well Nathavin, I will trust your judgment. If you say she is to be trustworthy, I will believe you.” He held out a warning hand, “However, if she is found to be untrustworthy,” his voice turned hard and deadly, “you will find yourself without a throne.”
Nathavin nodded curtly, it was as he’d expected. He just hoped Caellia hadn’t changed her mind. He didn’t think she had, she’d seemed quite surprised by the other females trick. His face stretched into a scowl, that elf would regret her decision. He’d make sure of it!

Caellia glared at Asterios, why wouldn’t he understand?! What did the elder elf fear? He’d taken the same stance Nalia had! Caellia swore softly to herself as she paced the balcony outside the temple. The moment she’d told him she’d allied them with the dark elves to remove the curse Asterios had become extremely agitated and downright hostile towards her. Something wasn’t right and Caellia knew he was hiding something from her. She firmed her resolve and stormed back inside.
Asterios looked up from his discussion with Nalia and fixed Caellia with a frosty stare. “How did you allow yourself to fall from grace Caellia?”
Caellia was unprepared for such a question and her confusion showed in her voice. “Fall from grace?” She paused before continuing, “I have not fallen from grace. I am attempting to make right a wrong our people caused. That is not a ‘fall from grace’.”
Asterios walked over to her, “Caellia, Nathavin has abducted you. Not once, but twice. He has held you hostage for quite some time.” He paused, silently regarding her, “He has threatened you, placed your life in immediate danger. Why should we light elves align ourselves with him and his kind?”
“It is the right thing to do! We caused his people’s lands to be the way they are!”
“How do you know this Caellia?” Asterios knew it was the truth, but he would not allow them to be allied with the dark elves for any reason. He had to convince Caellia that Nathavin had lied to her. “Did he prove it to you? Can he prove it to you?”
Caellia’s face fell; he hadn’t proved it to her. She had blindly believed him based on his emotions when he’d told her that.
“I see that he didn’t prove it to you.”
Caellia looked at Asterios, “He doesn’t have to. I choose to believe him.”
Nalia shook her head in anger, “How could you do this Caellia?! Right now we need you! We need our Queen so that we may focus on the threat Asadar poses! He is building an army to attack us and you have gone and fallen for one of our oldest enemies!”
Caellia stalked toward Nalia, “For the last time Nalia, I have not fallen for him!”
“Then why do you defend him so passionately?” Inquired Asterios.
“I’m not defending him. I’m defending myself from the two of you.” Caellia responded hotly.
Asterios regarded her for a moment. “Caellia, do you remember the clause in the law of our land regarding the possible scenarios that would require my intervention on the King or Queens behalf?”
Caellia answered hesitantly, a nagging suspicion at the back of her mind, “Yes.”
“Do you remember what those conditions are?”
Caellia nervously looked between him and Nalia as she answered, “Yes, the King or Queen would need to have abandoned their duties, be disabled or found to be unfit to carry out the responsibilities of their station.”
“And who would decide if the King or Queen is unfit for such an important station?” Asterios fixed Caellia with an inscrutable stare.
“You…” Caellia trailed off as a look of horror crossed her features as she realized what Asterios was setting her up for. “NO! You cannot take my birthright from me!”
“Can’t I?”
“No! I am perfectly capable of leading our people! You have to believe me!”
“Then abolish this alliance so that we may deal with Asadar!” Asterios began to grow incensed. “We cannot afford to waste precious time and energy fighting Nathavin right now!”
“We don’t have to! Listen, Nathavin said that Goryn made him promise to protect me. He’s done exactly that ever since, whether I wanted his protection or not!”
Asterios cut her off, “Of course he’s protecting you! If you die he has no way to force the light elves to obey him!”
“You’re wrong Asterios! I’ve seen his armies! He could crush all of our people without thinking twice.” Caellia swung to Nalia, “Nathavin trusted me to try to send you home. He could’ve had any number of guards attack you and the others, especially when you were holding that young boy hostage, but he didn’t.”
Nalia didn’t know how to respond to that and stayed silent.
Caellia pleaded with her, “You must’ve known you wouldn’t be able to get me out of there if he truly wanted to harm our people! He would’ve killed you and the others immediately!”
Asterios calmly watched Caellia. “Caellia, you are treading upon dangerous ground here. Discontinue this nonsense before you dishonor us all, and before you force my hand.”
Caellia gaped at him, “You can’t be serious!”
“I am.” Asterios deadpanned.
Caellia looked at Nalia for help but the look she found on Nalia’s face told her that help would not be forthcoming from her. She asked with a shuddering breath, “What would you have me do?”
“That’s more reasonable.” Asterios said with a smile. “I assume that Nathavin will come looking for you. When he does, you will tell him that the alliance is over. That you’ve seen through his lies and that you will not allow him to control our people through you.”
Caellia stared aghast at Asterios, not quite believing what she was hearing. However if she wanted to keep her standing she would have to do as he said, or face being declared unfit to rule. She bowed her head and stated with great sorrow, “I understand.”
Asterios merely nodded and turned away from her, dismissing her. As the two women filed out he passed a hand over his face. What could I have done, he thought to himself. He strolled over to a chest, unlocked it, and reached inside to withdraw a single scroll. The cursed scroll detailed every facet of his prior involvement with the dark elves, his knowledge of Caellia’s fate, and how he planned on betraying Caellia in order to protect the light elves. He sighed and put the scroll back within the confines of the chest and locked it up again.

Nathavin and his forces gathered at a small clearing just before the bridge at the edge of the neutral zone that bordered elven lands and the lands of Gludio. Once they crossed this bridge they’d be in light elven territory, his eyes narrowed in frustration. He should not have allowed Caellia to get so close to them. He should’ve expected some kind of deception from that temple knight. Nathavin unconsciously gripped his bow tighter in anger, paying no heed to the resulting groans the weapon emitted under the stress. He didn’t reply when Kattath came forward and declared that they were ready to move into the light elven lands. He simply strode across the bridge and waited for the two light elven sentinels to challenge his entrance.
The two sentinels exchanged glances with one another at the sight of Nathavin. The braver of the two, Trionell, held his hand up to stop Nathavin’s progress. “Halt! No dark elf is allowed on these lands by order of High Priest Asterios.” He quickly lowered his hand before anyone noticed that it was trembling.
Nathavin casually glanced at him then replied flatly, “As a courtesy to Caellia I will give you the opportunity to step aside.” His voice turned deadly cold, “Before I kill you!”
Sentinel Eriel’s eyes narrowed, “Do not speak of our Queen in such a familiar manner.” He was angered that Nathavin spoke of Caellia as if he were her close friend or even worse, a lover.
This surprised Nathavin, “Since when has she been your Queen? I was under the impression that she would be a Princess until she was wed.”
“She became our Queen the day she turned 610.” Eriel bit out before Trionell could stop him.
“Really?” Nathavin feigned indifference, focusing on Eriel. “Then I suppose I’ll just have to ensure that I get her back.” He stood toe to toe with Eriel, towering over the sentinel by a good margin.
Eriel gulped as he suddenly found himself looking up at the dark elven lord. When had Nathavin moved to stand in front of him? His startled gaze took in the massive bow with the sharp spines as it was held tightly against Nathavin’s chest. Even if he tried to raise his sword he doubted he’d be able to get a swing in before the bow’s spines were buried in his chest.
“You will let us pass.” Nathavin spoke softly, his very tone promising dire consequences if the sentinels refused him.
“Absolutely not! We will not allow you to cross our borders!” Trionell called out defiantly as he prepared to charge Nathavin. As he started his charge, a tight and rapidly spinning disc of air knocked him off his feet. Shaking his head he looked to see where it had come from and gawked at the sheer number of dark elves that had crested the top of the bridge. He knew it would be suicide to try to fight Nathavin now, the gathered forces would never allow their Lord to fall to him. Trionell would be killed if he managed to harm Nathavin. He looked to Eriel; Nathavin was standing too close to him for Eriel to even attempt to flee to warn the village.
Nathavin laughed contemptuously at Trionell. “What are you going to do? You can’t fight us all and your friend will be dead before he turns around.” He smirked evilly, “Perhaps you think you can outrun my arrow?”
“Nathavin” Kattath began as she sidled up to him, “they didn’t do any harm to Caellia. They weren’t the ones who took her away.” His dark blood was almost in full control, and what was frightening was that he wasn’t fighting it. He was deliberately toying with these two sentinels.
“Fine, I’ll let them live, for now.” Nathavin sneered as he backed away from Eriel. “Go!! Warn your village that I’m coming to reclaim what’s mine!” Nathavin viciously snarled.
Eriel gave Nathavin a hard look before adding a final parting shot, “She will never be yours!”
“We shall see about that!” Nathavin told Eriel’s retreating back.
