“How was the date?” The young woman heard Chiara ask as they walked through the halls of the keep. It was a beautiful day as it usually was which made her miss the rain from her state. Due to the new day, she wore a hanbok; a pink top with a floral collar and cuffs and a dark grey skirt.
“The date was very good. It was nice to have that time alone with him.”
“What happened?” Linking her arm through her friend’s, she lowered her voice so only the other blonde was able to hear. After all, she didn’t want anyone to gossip about the possibilities that had happened between them. People loved to create scenarios whether if they were true or not.
“It was sweet really. He gave me his lucky coin that he had been carrying for many years. We then uh… Well, I think we may have given each other a sign or something.”
“A sign? Sirena, signs are not going to make any sense. Not to him and not to you. There may be feelings, but signs will befuddle you both.” Her friend ended up shaking her head at the ridiculousness of what the fake blonde had said. The girl knew she had a point, perhaps she really was thinking too much about it which was making her an idiot in a way. All of a sudden there was a small pitter patter running in her direction.
“You’re Sirena. Mom said you were scary, but you don’t look scary.” With a small smile the young woman looked at the small child with amusement.
“Why did your mom say that?” She asked in a gentle voice as she kneeled down to be at the kid’s height.
“Because people fear the next stage if it comes too soon.” The answer perplexed the American due to the point she had no idea what to say. Her eyes glanced over at Chiara who looked just as confused as her. Though, what shocked her more when it shouldn’t have, was seeing Morrigan show up.
“Kieran, are you bothering this woman?”
“Of course not!”
“It is time to return to your studies.” It was so odd to see the angry mysterious one as a mother. She knew when it happened of course, but it was still surprising. Not to mention, her son listened so well! Her jaw dropped.
“I always disliked her.” Chiara said quietly for her ears only. “Morrigan makes a good mom.” The outlander nodded her head in agreement since she was in the same boat as her friend in that belief.
“My son, though, you ladies most likely knew that already. You need not worry about him. He’s a quiet and well-spoken lad, but he goes where I go.”
“You must be very proud of your child.”
“But not the sort one would expect a woman like me to raise. No son of mine would be raised in a marsh, be left out of contact from the outside world. His future will be difficult without mine adding to his burden. To think recently this place stood decrepid. Occupied by the desperate and the lost. Now it is party to events that threaten to shake the world. I wonder if it is pleased.”
“So, you know about Skyhold.”
“This fortress was built on the remains of a site holy to ancient elves. They called it Tesirus Halilan; a place where the sky is kept. It is said from here they reached up to the heavens to bring them down to rest. They abandoned it as did the humans who came after them. Bones laid upon bones. Silent, until your arrival. Well… maybe not your arrival, but the inquisition’s.” Sirena appreciated the history lesson that she had received. She hadn’t expected to get one of Skyhold which made her wonder if it was a test on how much she already knew about their lore.
“I’m quite fond of this place.”
“The magic in this place has seeped into the stones. Protecting it from darkness.” Didn’t she practice dark magic herself? That may have been ignorant of her to think that way, but she knew her mother taught her the craft. “Those who let it fall to ruin did not know what they possessed. You, and the Inquisition, I think, shall do it justice. You were kind to welcome my aid knowing as much about me as you do. I will do my best to aid you and the cause with all the knowledge at my disposal. This, I swear to you.” As the American observed the woman, she noticed her sincerity. Looking over at her friend again, she caught a nod.
“I appreciate all the help you can give us.” Did she meant help her and Chiara find their way home? Or helping the Inquisition? What exactly had she accepted?
“Some might think Corypheus a madman for seeking godhood. Yet, one must ask, what were the old gods? What secrets of theirs did the ancient magisters know? What I fear, what all should fear; is not that Corypheus believes he could succeed, is that he actually may.”
“What would that mean for both, Sirena and I?” That question was clearly burning inside the noggin of hers. But she couldn’t help but be curious about it as well.
“If he succeeds, it may mean you will never go home and be stuck here for the rest of your lives.” Her eyes glanced over at her friend who had gone pale. She put her arm around Chiara’s shoulder to offer some comfort knowing that news was not easy for her to hear. Even she felt like that once upon a time before she grew to love Thedas. Before loving Cullen Rutherford. In a way, Sirena still wanted to go home since she knew that was where she belonged. Could she deny her heart?
“Then we have to do all we can to prevent him from succeeding. Not just for us, but for everyone in Thedas as well.”
“Sounds like to me you have chosen to go back after all.” The outsider couldn’t help but raise a brow at the other. What was it about the woman that made her not like her much? After all, she was just trying to help and save her home continent.
“No, I have not decided whether I’m going home or not, but it’s nice to have the option either way.”
“You have time to make that decision, but you should make it soon for you never know how much time you got.” Her eyes squinted at the woman slightly. What was that supposed to mean? Did Morrigan already found a way for them to go home? Before she was able to ask any questions, there was a pair of rushing feet heading over to where the trio stood.
“Sirena, we are needed in the war room right now.” The American recognized the voice which sounded very serious. With a quick look to her friend, she immediately left the inner courtyard. Her steps were quick as she basically ran through the keep to get to where she needed. Once inside the room, Sirena noticed a marker on the large map which made her blood run cold. Finally, dragging her eyes away from the table, she noticed everyone, including Evelyn were surrounding the table. Her ears did not catch anything that was being said. All she was able to think about were spiders and the location that was marked. All she caught was wardens having a demon army and some of those soldiers were sympathizers.
“Give the word and we march on Adamant.”
“We will go now.” The outlander remained where she was standing, unable to move. It was going to be her worse nightmare and she already knew it.
“Do I need to come as well?” She noticed the Inquisitor stopped at the door before turning slowly to look at the younger woman.
“The army needs to go. I have to go. And you have to go to Adamant with us. It will be a big battle. They need us, both of us, out there.” All Sirena was able to do was nod silently with a feeling of foreboding washing over her.
While standing outside of the keep, surrounded by the Inquisition army, she looked out over the keep watching some of the soldiers getting pushed off the wall to their deaths. In the distance, there was a big explosion. The Inquisition finally had an opening! With her own eyes, she saw men and women march forward while getting shot at with arrows. Some were even using ladders to scale the walls. Watching a war happen in front of her was not something she wanted to see ever. From a distance, Sirena caught some of the soldiers getting squashed which caused her to look away. Her ears picked up the sounds of swords clashing and some pounding. Feeling a nudge against her arm made her look up at the person. Evelyn gave a nod of her head telling the outlander to follow her.
Not having any choice in the matter, the American followed the group through all the trebuchets. Doing her best to avoid the bodies on the ground, she made sure to either step around or over them. It felt too disrespectful otherwise. Granted it was a war but morality should be held. Finally, she made it through the broken door. As soon as she and everyone stepped into the keep, Grey Wardens were already attacking them. Due to having little time to pull out her katana, she almost got stabbed. Luckily, due to spinning away in time, she remained unscathed. With determination, the American unsheathed her sword then swung at her attacker. She let out a cuss word when he moved out of her blade’s range. The blonde may not like killing but in order to protect herself, she had to do what needed to be done with a lot of regret. While remaining focused, her eyes caught sight of a blade heading towards her face. What felt like slow motion, she turned and saw how it missed her by a hair. While her opponent was busy, she plunged her katana into the person. Immediately, she saw beads of red spilling onto the blade before the person dropped onto the ground. After pulling her sword out, Sirena glanced around to see that it wasn’t just humans but crazy looking demons with spikes on their backs and all of them were dead already. In the distance, she heard a yell which caused her to look up only to see the man run away. From behind her, the outlander heard a voice that was very familiar to her. She turned around and saw the Inquisitor talking to Cullen who was in his Commander mode. Sirena walked over to the two and stood by Evelyn. From what she was able to hear, they had to help the soldiers get a footing on the wall.
After the conversation had ended between the two, Evelyn walked away. The American girl tried to follow so she could help but her hand was grabbed. Sirena turned her head and looked up into Cullen’s eyes only to see fear and concern in those brown orbs of his.
“I can’t go with you this time.” He said regretfully to her. “I need you to be careful in there. Always have your guard up.” She felt his lips against her forehead, giving her a quick kiss. “Be safe.” With a nod of her head, she followed the leader of the inquisition.
For a couple of minutes, Evelyn ran around like she was lost as the others followed her. The outlander stood still and watched for a little bit before looking around. There, she found where they needed to go. To get her attention, Sirena cleared her throat and motioned towards an archway where there were stairs. Immediately, the older one led the group where they needed to go if she knew where that was. They had to find their way to the battlements. To get there, they had to fight the enemy in the Bailey. As they fought, the American saw how the Inquisitor moved. She advanced so fast in her eyes, the woman looked inhuman.
Once they had made it to the battlements, the group had split up to two or three people and went their separate ways to clear the siege points. Sirena was partnered up with Vivienne. There was one demon and two soldiers. The odds were against them, but luckily the one with her was a mage. After taking a deep breath and letting it out, she ran at the soldiers. Once they spotted her, the men went after her with their blades swinging. Keeping her promise to Cullen, she swung her sword to keep one from slashing at her. Using the one to her advantage, she turned him while the other Grey Warden was swinging his sword making him slash his own brethren in war. Pushing the dead body to continue to use him as a human shield, the other opponent stabbed his sword into the lifeless comrade. The American took the opportunity to drop the body before plunging her own blade into her enemy. After she pulled out her katana, she looked around to see that the fire demon was already gone.
“We should meet up with the others.” Without further ado, the young woman led the way to the others. Luckily, it seemed everyone had been successful. Seeing a nod from Evelyn’s head, she knew, her and the mage were acknowledged before making a move. They ran through some doors and halls till they were able to hear voices which had made them run faster. It was then she caught the words “complete the ritual” which told her the wardens were doing things they didn’t understand. Her eyes caught the sight of their leader step up and talked back to Clarel. After watching the exchanges that were going between the leaders, Clarel commanded for the rift to be opened. Sirena’s eyes looked over at the Grey Wardens, seeing the light bulb go off in their heads, realizing they were being lied to this entire time.
“My master thought you might come here, Inquisitor! He sent me this to welcome you!” Immediately, there was a roar in the sky. Her gaze looked up and there was a black dragon that looked partially dead and very familiar, flying around. If it wasn’t rotten looking, she’d think it was glorious to look at, but sadly, it was scary and ugly. Every time it opened its mouth, red lyrium came out of the flying beast.
“Well, what do we do Inquisitor?” She raised her voice slightly so she could be heard above all the noise.
“We have to pursue Clarel!” The American and the rest of the companions turned and saw a big demon that was blocking their path. “After we defeat the Pride demon.” Sirena stayed with the group and unsheathed her sword for the third time that night. The closer she approached the demon the more frightened she became. That thing had AOE attacks which could actually hurt her. While being careful, she made sure she was behind it. When the demon turned to face her and Vivienne, it was too late for her to move. The American felt an electric current go through her. For her, the pain was excruciating to the point her katana fell from her hand.
It felt like forever till the demon had fallen. When the shock had stopped running through her body, she was finally able to get up with some help. Once she was standing up, everyone had to follow the Inquisitor up the stairs and through a hall where the red lyrium dragon poked his head in. Why was everyone just running past it? Avoiding getting bitten or worse by the mythical beast, Sirena hugged the wall to continue to follow the others. As soon as they made a turn around a corner, the outlander saw two mages fighting against each other. In a way, she hoped the one who had corrupted the Grey Wardens in the first place would get destroyed. Others died for a fake cause! All of a sudden, the dragon had landed and basically ate Clarel in one bite. The American let out a gasp of horror. It then threw her body down in front of them all intact. And she was still alive!? How!? Clarel was crawling away from the best as it stalled her, or so it seemed. As it made a leap toward the group, the mage blasted the dragon making it crash down which broke the battlements. It had begun to crumble further which had caused her to panic. The American tried to run from the crumbling stone but ended up falling. A loud and long scream escaped from her lips as she plummets down. She was going to die!
Out of the blue, the color green had surrounded her. What was happening? What she knew was, she couldn’t run fast enough from the crumbling stone. The young woman had known she was falling to her death. Those were her logical thoughts, but to be surrounded by green? It wasn’t possible. For a second her surroundings became dark then green again as she fell. All of a sudden, Sirena stopped in mid-air. Just floating. It was a strange sensation for her. Then with a hard landing that surprised her more than anything, the blonde laid on the ground. With a groan, she finally stood up before taking in her surroundings. There were stone, floating rocks, and everywhere was surrounded with the color green. Sirena saw the others do the same near her when she heard a male voice say they were in the fade.
“We are seriously in the fade? Where the spirits roam?” She asked as she approached the group who were having a discussion.
“Yes, my dear, this is the fade. It is not a great place for us to be in our physical shell.” Soon, Sirena was listening to the conversation before hearing Sera cuss at their situation. The Grey Warden and Trevelyan made a quick escape plan. They were going to try and leave through the same way the demons were exiting out of. With the plan set, they had begun to go on their adventure in the fade. They had run toward a broken mirror. Every now and again, Evelyn had vanquished the spirits. As they ran around, the group had come across a woman in fancy robes. Everyone had looked startled, except the American.
“Divine Justinia!” The warden beside the Inquisitor informed Evelyn that their priestess of sorts was indeed dead and the spirit or demon was impersonating the person. Again, there was back and forth between the group. All the spirit wanted to do was help them. She even explained that a demon had taken both hers and everyone’s memories. There was also a false calling which the Grey Wardens were falling for. The old woman offered a way for Trevelyan to gain her memories back. Sadly, they had to fight the spirits. Since it seemed so quiet and easy, the American wondered why she was there till she remembered where she was at before getting into the fade. Once she heard the conversation was over, the outlander noticed from her peripheral, spirits had appeared finally.
At once, without hesitation, she watched as Evelyn and the others ran at the green spirits. With interest, Sirena stood back and watched since she knew it was going to be quick any way. As she silently watched, she noticed the spirits had become green orbs. Those had to be Evelyn’s memories.
“The green orbs are your memories! Grab them!” The outlander yelled to the Inquisitor who immediately did as the American instructed. Once the leader grabbed all of the orbs, she crouched down in pain. She saw the others had begun to make their way towards her. “She’s okay! Her memory is coming back.” The young woman made her way over to the group since there was no worry of her getting in the way. The American noticed Evelyn had stood back up with more confidence which was when they learned about what the orb was used for and how Corypheus’ were thwarted. It was no wonder the guy was pissed.
Once they got all they needed from the spirit impersonating the Divine, they had begun to run again. This time they had a hint of where to go. Sirena felt really useless for she wasn’t doing anything in the fade. As she ran along with everyone, she heard a voice talking about a fear being taken away. In a way, it creeped her out. With the group, the American slashed down ugly looking demons that appeared every now and again. Blindly, the outlander was following the group until she saw two big spiders drop down. Her eyes widened in fear.
“Oh! Hell no! Nuh uh! I am not… Nope.” Sirena remained behind everyone not wanting to be near spiders. She had some bad arachnophobia. They continued going up and down the path to get to that fade portal. At least she was able to kill the demons. Spiders was a no can do. The American followed the group downhill, her eyes staying on the path. Knowing her, she could be quite clumsy and trip over herself. When they reached what looked like a canyon to the outlander, the Divine or spirit that looked like Justinia stood there waiting for the group.
Of course, Evelyn was going to talk to her! Why shouldn’t she? The woman was getting answers about the mark on her hand. When the blonde American overheard what the anchor was for, her eyes widened. She had completely forgotten about that piece of information about it being the reason how she was physically in the fade. That was a powerful tool. No wonder Corypheus wanted to use it so badly. As the two continued to talk, she began to get a little restless. Where was the button to skip the dialogue button when one needed it.
Finally! The two had finished talking. The two women reminded her of her mother whenever they ran into someone her mom knew. It was annoying yet she appreciated those times with the woman who gave birth to her. Immediately, Sirena followed the Inquisitor down what seemed like ramp when she spotted demons. It seemed the others did as well. The outlander pulled out her sword and took steps toward a green ghost and slashed at it twice while Evelyn went that was gliding around. After she had slashed a spirit down, it had become a green orb which meant it was a memory that belonged to their leader. As the Inquisitor collected her memory, the American’s and Evelyn’s companions slashed down the demons that swarmed around the older woman.
Once by one the green spirits and demons were vanquished. Evelyn was able to collect all of her memories. The American had no idea what was going on when Evelyn got a blank look on her face when she collected the last orb. It didn’t take long for her to come back which clued her in that perhaps she had a flashback of what she had forgotten. The elder woman spirit had appeared out of nowhere yet again. Sirena listened as the Inquisitor spoke about how it wasn’t Andraste who had saved her but the Divine, herself, and ended up dying for it. That meant that the person whom was speaking to them was indeed a spirit. It was finally set free as she glowed. Evelyn was thankful but again Hawke and the warden had got into an argument.
“As I said before! Those wardens were under control of Corypheus! We will talk about this later in Adamant.”
“Yes, the place where the Inquisition forces faces an army of demons which were raised by the wardens!”
“How dare you judge us! You killed almost every mage in Kirkwall!”
“I had to! There were too many who were practicing blood magic. Just like your wardens!” Why wasn’t anyone stopping the fight? “Even if Corypheus wasn’t influencing, the wardens go too far! They need to be in check.”
“Oh my god! That’s enough! Yall can debate or argue another time.” Sirena had finally lost her cool. There was a better time to do that sort of thing. For crying out loud, they were still in danger! When she heard a scuttling sound and some noise, her face paled.
“Inquisitor…” The look of fear was on most people’s faces including Sirena’s. A small scream escaped from her lips. Everyone but her were already fighting against the eight-legged freaks. They were huge too! Her eyes were closed the entire time. Someone had tapped her shoulder causing her eyes to open. There were no more spiders. It was time to go. With a shaky breath, the outlander continued to follow the rather large group. The deeper they went the more demons they had to kill. At this point she wanted to get out of the fade and see the sky again. Everything looked the same everywhere they went. To the American, it felt like she was never getting out. Finally, her blue-green eyes spotted a gate to get out and relief washed over her. That was until more spiders slipped down from their webs. When it came to the demons, she always helps, she didn’t know how they were managing it, but a lot of enemies became a one shot kill.
At last! The barrier weakened! Without hesitation, Sirena ran for the tunnel where it was safe. Once inside, the American stopped running to get some energy back. She heard the others had also joined to take a short break. It was hard to keep going while huffing and puffing. Her head turned in the direction where the big rift was with fear and dread. Was this next battle going to be where she dies? A small tear slipped from her eyes due to knowing what they’d have to face.
“I want to leave this dark place; I want to be under the stars. I don’t want to be here.” Sirena let out not knowing what looks she was given.
“We will get out of here alive. I don’t think the Commander would appreciate it if we let you die here.” She had no idea if the woman was joking or not, the outlander decided not to say anything in case it was stupid. “I think we’ve waited long enough; we need to get to that rift.” That was her que that they were leaving their spot. After the short break, the outlander was ready to go. Without any hesitation, she ran along with everyone following Evelyn. That was until they had come across an ugly demon that was spider like.
What was behind the demon was a monster so terrifying to the American. Once her eyes laid on it, a loud piercing scream had escaped from her. It was a blood curdling scream which she had only released once before. Tears streamed down her face. Luckily, her terror was short lived for there was a bright glow that attacked the monstrous spider, but it angered the demon. With shaking hands, Sirena pulled her katana from its scabbard. It was time to face off with the thing.
Doing her best to ignore the spiders, she swung her blade at Nightmare while the others fought the freaks and demon when they had the chance. It was a bitch since it would disappear then reappear when it thought its health was going down too low. When a spider dropped near her, she’d close her eyes and whimpered. She was glad there were those in the inquisition that knew about her phobia. It made things easier for her. Still… She didn’t know how long she was going to last. Would her fear take over her?
At long last the Nightmare demon was vanquished with a piercing his squeal. Relief had flooded her heart. The rift was within their reach! A smile appeared on her lips as her heart thumped in excitement to go back to Thedas, back to Cullen. But her happiness was short lived. Again, she let out a blood curdling scream before she fell down as she covered her ears and closed her eyes. Sirena had begun to shaking in terror, there was no way she was going to survive.
