Thirty-Seven
It was going badly.Kalec stared at the latest wave of corrupted elementals and wondered how much more of a beating his arcane shield would take. Outside the shield, men and women, humans, night elves, dwarves, Worgen, Draenei, whatever, were fighting and dying and being resurrected as fast as the healers could keep up with the demands of battle. The Dark Shaman and their like-minded warrior friends were doing everything they could to keep the reinforcements from Stormwind from taking the ground around the Dark Portal. They were also doing their damnedest to bring the portal down.
Kalec had rushed straight here after contacting Jaina and telling her the situation. There had been a look in her eyes and a tone in her voice that made Kalec's heart ache, and made him fear for her sanity. He knew she hadn't been the same since Theramoore had been destroyed, and she hadn't gotten better - admittedly, she hadn't gotten too much worse either - since Garrosh had been defeated. She certainly hadn't gotten any better. Still, she was still a force to be reckoned with, and if anyone could get Varian to where he wanted to be, it was Jaina.
Kalec ducked under a mace and slammed his fist into the orc's nose, breaking it with a sickening crack and spraying blood. He side-stepped the Orc as the warrior continued moving forward, and Kalec hit him in the back with an arcane blast that melted armor and flesh alike. He gritted his teeth and fought to turn around, trying to stay near the shield he'd erected. If he fell, then the elementals would swarm over the defenders, and then there'd be no stopping the Dark Horde from destroying the Dark Portal.
A gut-wrenching scream echoed over the battlefield and Kalec turned his head to see a gnome warlock go flying, his flesh a mass of burns. A fire elemental blundered through the unprotected flank, swinging fiery fists at the Alliance warriors. Before Kalec could move, another elemental rushed forward and locked itself around the fire elemental. Kalec recognized it as an earth elemental, and he spotted its owner, a Draenei shaman, focusing every ounce of energy she had onto that fight. Around her, a few warriors and paladins gathered, keeping the shaman behind them as the enemy fought to swarm her. Kalec cursed and lifted his hand. A series of arcane bolts shot from his palm in iridescent spheres, speeding across the battlefield to strike the lead Dark Shaman, sending the orc's body flying across the ground. The elemental he'd been trying to summon gave a grating howl and vanished. It certainly wasn't enough, but it'd by them some time.
Something hit Kalec between the shoulder blades, sending him sprawling on the dusty ground. Kalec rolled to the side to avoid being squashed by an earth elemental, and stared at the Orc looming above him. The orc's jaw split into a terrible grin, showing of yellow teeth. Kalec jackknifed his legs into the orc's middle as the shaman tried to stab him with the end of a bladed staff. Kalec received a nick on his thigh for the effort, but he managed to drive the shaman back. He got to his feet and sucked in a breath as pain flared in his leg. He slapped his hand to the wound to put a shield around it, resolving to heal it later. Judging by the way that earth elemental was coming at him, Kalec figured he didn't have much time for anything else.
He barely was able to get his sword up in time to deflect a dagger aimed at his chest, spinning to face the newest enemy. This shaman was dressed differently compared to the others, with a full wolf-fur hood covering his face. Kalec saw the hint of a savage grin and was suddenly on the defensive as the shaman pressed the attack, driving him further away from the Alliance fighters and giving him little time to cast a spell to help defend himself. Around him, Kalec watched the Alliance defenders start to fall, caught between raging elementals that were now breaking through Kalec's shield, and the army of the Dark Horde. Not even the healers could keep up with the amount of fallen.
Fine time for everything to go to hell, Kalec thought to himself. Between the two shaman he faced, they were driving him back step by step, away from the Dark Portal. Kalec grimaced. The further he got from his arcane shield the weaker it was going to get; too far away, and the shield would shatter. Since the two shaman were working in tandem to keep Kalec from getting around them, the likelihood of the shield breaking was growing exponentially.
"What the hell are you guys after?" Kalec hissed, managing to deflect one dagger, and dodge the other.
The shaman brayed with laughter. "Isn't it obvious?" Said the one with the wolf hood. "We're going to wipe out you fools and live as the Horde is meant to live!"
"The world is going to obey us!" Crowed the other shaman. "If you surrender, our leader just might let you serve us."
"Well, it's a good thing I have no intention of surrendering." Kalec spat. He spun under Wolf-hood's blade and came up inside the shaman's guard. He drove his sword into Wolf-hood's chest, only to find his sword stopped by an earth shield. Cursing, Kalec leaped back and prepared a teleportation spell, hoping he'd get it off in time.
He didn't.
A water elemental hit him hard with an icy-cold torrent, soaking him from head to toe and knocking him to the ground. Swiping his hair out of his eyes, Kalec saw that the battle was going poorly for the Alliance defenders, and he saw his arcane shield shatter, making vulnerable more of the Alliance forces he'd been given charge of.
"Looks like you lose, half-elf." Crowed Wolf-hood. He raised his hands to the sky and let out a laugh that sounded like metal scraping against rock. "Watch now as your world falls! Watch as your friends die and the True Horde takes its rightful place in the world!"
Boom
Wolf-hood stopped laughing, but the grin was still present on his face. He turned to look toward the Dark Portal. His companion moved toward Kalec, along with two earth elementals that grabbed hold of the former Aspect of Magic and pulled his arms taut to the sides. The shaman waved his dagger under Kalec's chin, smiling. "Just watch. Your victory in Orgrimmar was merely a setback for us. Now, we'll show the world the true power we possess."
Boom
Kalec saw the Dark Portal shudder. Dust flew from it, but it didn't fall. He knew it was only a matter of time though, and as bravely as the Alliance forces fought, they'd never reach the Portal in time. Kalec thought of Varian, who was even now heading toward Alterac to fight on that front, who had trusted him to defend the Dark Portal in the hopes that Anduin would be coming back from wherever he was. To watch the Portal come down, to know that he had the power to stop it, to know that it would be his fault that Varian would never see his child again.
Kalec laughed, low and deep, catching the two Dark Shamans' attention. He grinned at them, looking at them through the strands of his blue hair. "I think I should show you the power I possess."
He watched their eyes widen as his shape began to change. Pale skin gave way to blue scales; nails gave way to claws. Kalecgos watched their astonishment grow as he left behind the half-elf form and assumed his natural body. The sheer weight and size of Kalec was enough to crush the two elementals holding him. He looked down at the two Dark Shaman and roared.
An echoing roar came from the Alliance, rallying at the sight of the blue dragon. Kalec spread his wings wide and inhaled sharply, feeling his chest turn ice cold as he drew on his breath weapon. Everything in front of him didn't have a chance; the ice swept over orcs and elementals alike, freezing many in their tracks. Kalec closed his jaws with a decisive snap, then yelled, "To the Portal! Don't let them bring it down! The fate of Azeroth is depending on it!" He spread his wings, intending to take flight. Then a groan came from the defenders, and Kalec soon saw why.
A massive stone dragon was standing on the cliffside, a rider astride its shoulders. The Orc shaman lifted a clawed hand and lighting smote the ground in front of the forerunners of the Alliance, sending them flying. Kalec hissed and managed to catch them in time, saving them from more serious injury.
"Nice catch," said the Dark Shaman. Upon closer inspection, Kalec felt as though he was the leader, based on the armor he was wearing. "But I'm afraid it does you little good. Saves them from the inevitable, I suppose."
Kalec let out a deep-throated snarl that rolled through the area like thunder. "No matter what you have in your arsenal, you won't win."
"Your optimism is sickening, you know that? We've already won. My army won't tire, it won't die, it won't fall. You've already lost a third or more of yours, and what do you expect to do against us, blue? Your realm is magic, not earth."
"It doesn't matter." Kalec snarled. "I promised to stop you, and so I will."
He launched skyward. So did the stone dragon. Kalec saw it coming out of the corner of his eye and tried to turn to face it, knowing he'd have a better chance of hitting the thing if he was facing it head on.
A roar shattered the air, a deep and heavy sound that made Kalec's bones shiver. He saw the stone dragon pause, as if it were afraid. The Dark Shaman on its back bared his teeth and raised his hand again. Kalec saw the lightning starting to crackle and drew in a deep breath.
He never had a chance to unleash it.
She came through the portal like a violent storm, her massive wings sweeping aside the elementals and Dark Shamans like dead leaves before a gust of wind. Her black scales caught the reddish sunlight as she fully emerged and headed straight for Kalec. Startled, Kalec could only watch in horror as the Aspect-sized black dragon came at him like a runaway train, and-
-she hit the golem dragon with enough force to shatter it. Her claws tore through its rocky skin like it was tissue paper. Her giant maw opened wide and sprayed magma over the Dark Shaman riding the golem even as her claws ripped it to dust. When it was gone, she turned her attention to Kalec briefly, as if she were sizing him up, and then folded her wings and plummeted toward the ground with an agility a dragon her size shouldn't rightfully have. She roared again, this time answered by other voices. Three more black dragons had emerged from the Dark Portal - one an adult almost the size of the Aspect-sized female, and two others just into their drake years. Then Kalecgos saw a sight that surprised him even more - a bronze dragon burst out of the Dark Portal and breathed sand upon the enemies, either stopping them dead in their tracks or aging them until they were dried, withered husks.
Even the Alliance defenders had stopped fighting to stare at the five dragons now wreaking havoc over the battlefield. This was something Kalec had never seen before - black dragons actually helping people.
One of the smaller black dragons, a little female, winged toward him. As she got closer, Kalec was able to make out a rider, and his eyes widened. "Anduin!" He called. "Wrathion! You're okay!"
Anduin looked sheepish. Kalec couldn't tell what Wrathion's expression was, considering the hatchling was in his dragon form. As the black dragon they rode came closer Kalec realized the young female wasn't like any of the blacks he'd faced during the Cataclysm; not only did she look a little different, but there was something about her, some sort of assurance, that the black dragons hadn't possessed here. She hovered, beating her wings gently.
"Kalec, where's my dad?" Anduin asked when he was close enough. "Why are you here?"
"Varian went to Alterac to stop the main body of the Dark Horde. I'm here to make sure you came back safe. Who are all these dragons?"
Anduin grimaced. "This is Tyrannia. The others are Irritanion, Sadirion, and the huge one is Athena. She's their leader. The bronze is Karidormi - we met up with her a while ago and went with her to find a black dragon who could help Go’el.”
"Help Go’el?”
Tyra shook her head. "Anduin, it'd be better if we landed."
Anduin looked at her and nodded. Kalec shifted to follow Tyra to the ground, to an open space where there was enough room for them among the Alliance defenders. He watched in amazement as the Alliance, with the help of the dragons, pushed back the Dark Horde and managed to turn the tide on their enemy.
One by one the dragons landed around Kalec and Tyrannia. He met evenly the gazes of Sadirion and Irritanion, then greeted Shandris, who quickly slid from Sadirion's back to join a contingent of Sentinels that had been in the battle, quickly taking charge. From Irritanion's back slid a Draenei girl - or was she an Orc? - and she moved over to Anduin, who'd also slid to the ground. The bronze dragon Karidormi landed next, her rider being a blood elf rogue who looked quite content to remain where he was. Only Athena remained in the air, harrowing the retreating Dark Horde forces with gouts of molten earth to cut off their paths of escape. Anduin hurried to Kalec, who had assumed his smaller form again, and quickly relayed the story.
Kalec rubbed his jaw as he looked at Wrathion, who now stood next to Anduin and was watching the changing tide of battle with unreadable crimson eyes. "If this is true," Kalec said, "then you need to hurry up and try to catch your dad before something happens that we can't reverse."
Anduin gave Kalec a lopsided smile. "That's the plan."
The Orc-Draenei girl stepped closer to Anduin. "We need to split up. That's the only way we'll be able to catch up anywhere in the conflict. Our enemy is already two steps ahead of us."
Anduin looked back at Kalec. "Do you think if we left someone here with you, you can hold this place?"
"As long as they don't use their recall ability, we should be just fine with a little extra help." Kalec assured.
The young prince of Stormwind looked toward Tyra. The young black dragon looked toward her older brothers. "Athena needs to go, and I'm the fastest flyer." She said.
Sadirion looked from his little sister to his older one. For a moment, Kalec thought Sadi was going to launch to go talk to Athena about the plan, but then Athena wheeled in the air and in two flaps was closing in on them, landing a second after. She eyed Kalec, then looked back to Sadirion and Irritanion. "Are you two willing to stay?" She asked.
Sadirion bobbed his head in a nod. "We'll be fine. These shaman aren't any worse than the ones we faced back home. Maybe just a little smarter, considering they're not ogres."
Athena chuckled. "Right then. Sadi, Irri, you listen to this blue here, and you make sure no one escapes this place. Do whatever you have to. This is our world now, and you make them regret trying to hunt us down."
Kalec couldn't help the shiver at Sadirion's chuckle. "As you wish, sister."
Athena turned her attention to Kalec then. "You make sure nothing happens to my brothers, or I'll make sure my face is the last thing you'll ever see."
Kalec blinked. "I'm a former Aspect-"
"Key word, there. Former." Athena smiled. "I'll show you respect when you earn it." She spread her wings. "Okay, who else is going with me?"
Shandris quickly approached Athena and clambered onto her claw. "There's no telling what we're going to run into there. Dashiell and I should be enough to hold the line while you and Kari do what needs to be done."
"And I'll take the others to Alterac." Tyrannia said. "We'll look to your coming."
Athena nodded. "Be safe. And don't do anything stupid, Tyra."
Then the huge black dragon leapt into the air, followed quickly by Karidormi, who shot Kalec a sympathetic look. Kalec gaped for a minute, then looked at Sadi and Irri. "Is she always like that?" He asked them.
"More or less," Irritanion replied. "Usually when she makes threats, she pins you to the ground first, so... I guess she kind of likes you."
Kalec blinked and wasn't sure if the noise he made was a groan or a choked laugh. Then he turned his attention to Anduin and the Orc-Draenei girl who were climbing onto Tyrannia's shoulders. "You be careful, Anduin. Your father has no idea you're coming, and Jaina's with him. It's going to be far more dangerous than in Pandaria."
Anduin looked over his shoulder at the girl and Wrathion, who was once more in his dragon form and clinging to the girl's shoulder. Then Anduin looked back at Kalec and smiled a little. "I think between the four of us, and the entire Alliance contingent my dad has, I think we'll be okay. Besides, I believe in Karidormi and Athena."
Before Kalec could say anything more, an explosion sounded in the distance, near the Dark Portal. Dust rolled over them, forcing them to cover their eyes. When the dust cleared, Kalec saw that Tyrannia was gone, airborne and flying hard for Alterac. That only left him and the two male black dragons.
Kalec looked at them, and they at him, and all three launched into the air to head back toward the thickest of the fighting, unleashing molten fire and chilling ice upon the Dark Shamans that blindly followed a madman.
